My father has the 04 Honda, its a very good utility car, good in snow , very reliable and peppy engine. Only downside is a little high petrol consumption with the automatic trans.
Perhaps Honda's most practical car. The amount of storage space, nooks and crannies everywhere, a rear pop out window, the removable back seats and the absolutely bulletproof engine are a combination nonpareil. Buying it for 19K in 2004, I have 181,000 miles on the vehicle and have not had a single problem with the engine, suspension or tranny. Same timing chain. Unfortunately, the a.c. systems are prone to literally falling apart around 125,000 miles (mine did and it cost too much to replace. Ugh) and some of the door and window electronics can be troublesome. Gas mileage is mediocre and power is adequate; however, it has a great AWD system and excellent ground clearance. As the cliché' states, they don't make these like they used to.
I love my 05 CRV. But I definitely keep it on the road and take care of it. Hope it's still going in 20 years. I have absolutely zero interest in brand new vehicles with their high cost and unnecessary complexity.

Honda! Both cars are very good build and quality , lets not forget there is no one like Japanese Enginering . Honda got more space and is running more on the front drive train , the 4x4 it starts when is necessary , definitely using more fuel and is heavier , strong suspension and more space on the boot from previous gen1 . From another side you got Toyota Rav4 2nd Gen. Super reliable cars , strong suspension , here the drive train is stuck whole 4x4 . More economical , motorway can reach to 6l/100km or around 47mpg (D4D engines) Both cars are very reliable and i think here is much about your own choice . If you decide to get diesel bear in mind that the clutch are very expensive and need to be careful about bad diesel fuel , also DPF EGR Turbo if driving in city i dont recommend or make sure to using engine cleaners Petrol engines are bulletproof and can easy be instaled LPG (GAS) if available and allowed in your country Toyota Rav4 is necessary to be replaced oil differential on every 60000 KM or 40K Miles which is half of the others crossovers , about Honda CRV make sure you using Genuine Honda Oil , is not expensive ! Is your own choice which one you take , they wont let you down if you love and treat them right , you going to have long journeys without to worry you break down or your wife drive through the curb. I'm already owner of the both manufactures and i will always choose JAPANESE !
For tall people CR-V is nice. Iam 185 cm tall, when sit in front passenger in back have space to sit comfortable. Inside space is far bigger then rav4. Got 2003 2 gen CRV for about 1 year, probably over 300k miles, still running great.
Yes, the CR-V is roomier and more comfortable. And Honda's cars are generally among the most reliable in the world. But I don't think Toyota is behind in reliability...And I loved driving the Rav4.
Hola.
Sorry for the late reply. The CR-V is more comfortable and its chassis is better tuned for the road. I'd say the CR-V is also better soundproofed. Perfect for a family. The Rav4, on the other hand, I find more fun in some ways.
This is a awesome video... You have taken the time and effort to bring it to the masses. I know it can be difficult when work and you tube collided 😊. These vehicle are the true essence of the AWD concept. At the time and still even today both will out preform any AWD in current form. I love my CRV auto 5 speed 2.4 ivtec. The only critical area is the location of the fuel tank and the wasted space under the table.( spare wheel on rear door). My real time awd system comes in straight away and is a treat. Great editing and filming.well done🇦🇺🚙👍
Thank you very much :) Yes, they are the last real SUVs.. uncompromising and functional. I agree that the CRV 2's tank design is wrong. But they probably didn't count on anyone thinking of it as an off road vehicle. It's just a great SUV, but for lighter terrain.
@rayal4860 The tank could have been expanded into that empty space and not have to stick out stupidly on the chassis. The spare wheel on the tailgate gives the CRV just the right amount of style.
Yes, this space could have been used for that But on a Honda factory assembly line, it would have been too complicated (and too much money!) to separate spare-wheel frames on the trunk and spare-wheel frames in the floor.
'05 5spd manual AWD owner, and loved this video. Great to see these 2 icons compared, and as always, the filming, and editing, are fantastic! 2 beautiful examples of the models. I sure wish we could have had them as diesels in the US! I feel lucky to have even found one with a 5spd manual transmission. I'd be interested in hearing your opinion on which one you liked more, overall, having tested them in the same driving conditions. Did one of them stand out? Quieter, more power, nicer feeling ride, better AWD function, better visibility out the windows, etc? They both seem fairly equal in the video, but I've never driven, or ridden in the Rav4, so I have no idea. I sure wish Honda would have relocated the fuel tank, and gotten ride of the fold-up table, and that wasted spare tire space below it (that the advertised in the US, was a "cooler" or "ice chest" for food). In my opinion, it was a poor choice to leave the fuel tank hanging down and in the way, with just a metal tube to protect it, and I feel the same with how they hung the exhaust system, with the catalytic converter and large resonator, both hanging down below the car, like an after thought. I really like mine, but these are a few things that make me say, "What were they thinking?" Thanks for all the time you put into making this video!
Thank you so much..I'm so glad I read this. When I have enough time, I want to take the videos to an even better level. Unfortunately, this work doesn't feed me yet and I have to divide my energy between several things..
@@OutOfTheWay4x4 I completely understand about the time it takes to make the video, and also having time for a real job, and family! 2 things I'd like to suggest: - A little less music, so we can hear the engines doing their thing, and the exhaust, and the tires. So maybe when the cars are really working to get traction, or accelerate hard, the music can be blended away. - On a comparison video like this one, when you list specific statistics for 1 car, also list the same statistic for the other car, so that the viewer can instantly compare. Otherwise, the viewer has to wind the video forward or backward, in order to see how long the Rav4 is compared to how lone the CR-V is, etc. Be sure to let that K24 in the Honda, wind up over 4,500rpm and then go higher, because that's when the rotary valve opens, makes the intake runners longer, and suddenly, the engine actually starts to make power. It's sort of funny when it happens, because you can literally say, "Ok, here it comes. We're about to make some power."
@@austinado16 Otherwise to your question.. I've owned 4 CRV's, I only have a Rav4 on long term loan now..Well my opinion is that the CRV is much more spacious and comfortable. It is much more suitable for a family. The Rav4 is better for off road. It is shorter overall and has permanent 4x4 drive. I found the Rav4 a bit more fun to drive. Its diesel was only 85kW, but its off-road power was a lot better than the 110kW petrol CRV. But it's a tribute to the diesel. My feeling is that if I didn't necessarily need a big comfortable car for the family as well, I'd opt for the Rav4 myself.
@@austinado16 Yes I agree with the comments about the music and the sound of the car... Otherwise it's not exactly easy to get to the 4500 rpm in the terrain... You have to watch the terrain in front of you. You have to choose something in between... And the petrol 2.0 really loses a lot of power at lower revs.
@@austinado16 But I can console you by saying that I'll be making another shorter video of this footage just offroad... without music and without much editing. And definitely some Short video..
I have the CrV for 11 years, has been super reliable and it is the first car that will be in the family as long as possible. Cheap, economical, pretty good off road availability.
Hi! The CR-V is a great choice. The fuel economy of the petrol version is similar compared to other SUVs. The SUV is heavier and doesn't have much aerodynamic shapes. And the 4x4 drive also contributes to the higher consumption. The 2.2 i-CTDi diesel is one of the best diesels I know. But be warned, don't buy the DPF version. But it depends on what the car would be used for. The diesel is better suited for longer journeys and doesn't do well with short journeys and frequent starting of the car. The petrol version will cope better with frequent short journeys around town. Both variants are reliable. The diesel is more powerful because it has more torque and turbo.
@OutOfTheWay4x4 Longer distances it is. Commuting between 2 countries (1500km), with quite a few tools and objects, and locally going to more rough areas. So some 4x4 capabilities are needed (but nothing too crazy) - as well as long road comfortably & economy. About the DPF - I have the impression many Gen 2 were equipped here in Germany with it, where I'm located. Have to research more into it.
In that case, I'd prefer a diesel engine... I know for a fact that the CR-V gen 3 2.2 i-CTDi was fitted with a DPF in Germany. I don't know how it was on the CR-V gen 2. I don't think that one had a DPF yet. The 2.2 i-CTDi had quite a few problems with the DPF. A better DPF solution was on the i-DTEC (facelift version of the CR-V gen 3). But the better engine, in my opinion, is the i-CTDi.
Very nice video! Would be nice in the future comparison videos to see the dimensions and other specs of the vehicles side by side. Also, is that Rav 4 turbo diesel? Had no idea they came with that option! Always wished my 2006 CRV had a manual engagement for AWD or a 4WD option. But it works decently for what I use it for. Very comfortable and spacious! I agree with the other commentor that the fuel tank placement is horrible 😅
Thank you very much 🙂 Yes, as for the dimensions, someone already wrote it to me... It's true and I originally wanted it that way... I just thought that there are more chapters and it would have to be broken down like this, for example, also on consumption, acceleration, etc... On the other hand, it makes people watch the video again and there are more ads.... 😂 (just kidding) Otherwise yes, here in Europe the diesel variant of the Rav4 and CRV gen2 is quite common.. with a diesel engine this Rav4 runs great.
If the need arises, the 4wd can be upgraded. We're looking of thinking into it with my mechanic, but it takes a lot of time (which he doesn't have!) and a bit of money (which I don't have!!)🙂
Both are good..the CRV is roomier and the Rav4 is a bit better off-road - it has permanent all-wheel drive. I would recommend looking at both cars in person and taking them for a spin...Watch out for any rust on the chassis. I'm sure it also depends on the condition of the car..
Im currently deciding between both cars. Speaking interior and long trips honda seems to have clear advantage. How would you say they compare while driving though? Looks like that muddy climb was much harder for honda than a toyota, but was it due to poor drivetrain performence (i have read a lot of bad opinions about it) or rather just more difficult conditions
When it comes to interior, comfort and size, the Honda CR-V is a winner. It is supremely comfortable to drive on the road. The problem with the i-vtec is that it is an engine that gets more power only at high revs. And that's not very good off-road. Otherwise, it's an absolutely great and reliable engine! The Toyota Rav4 is smaller, has a smaller wheelbase and permanent all-wheel drive. Some have a reduction gearbox. The Honda CR-V can't compete with that off-road. But as for the video, when I shot the CR-V it was muddy... the Rav4 had frozen dirt. So the CR-V had it harder. But it made it.
@@OutOfTheWay4x4 thanks for the insight. I think i'll go for crv since primary job will be carrying MTBs and skis in the trunk. Greetings from Poland :)
Neměly to až novější verze?
Just revisiting this great comparison video... I think the Honda did a better job ??? Such an awesome comparison of the two most iconic SUV's of the time... Im getting used to my Gen 3 CRV and will have a video out on it soon.🇦🇺👍
As I've written here before.. Both cars are amazing, quality and are true SUV icons. They're each a little bit different. The Honda CR-V is primarily front-wheel drive. The rear wheels are added automatically when needed. Unfortunately, it doesn't work as well off-road as the Rav4's permanent 4x4. But the CR-V is roomier and more comfortable. I'd go with this: If I had the car as a family car at the same time, I would definitely choose the CR-V. If I were on my own and only had the car for my driving, I'd probably choose the Rav4. It's tough, both cars are just great.
It's all about the tyres..In the video the CRV has slightly better tyres. Both cars are capable in the snow. But the Rav4 has permanent all wheel drive, which makes it better off road and in snow.
Definitely the CR-V. It absorbs noise well and is perfect on the road. It's better in the corners. It's more comfortable to drive in all directions. Rav4 is more suited for lighter terrain and driving Rav4 is more adventurous 🙂 . I like both these cars. The most comfortable car on the road is of course the 3rd gen CR-V.
This is the only level of comparison between Honda and Toyota in terms of 4x4 vehicles and even at this level Honda shows its technical limitations . Further than this Toyota knows how to build real adventure and overlanding vehicles. On the other hand when Honda wanted to produce a real off roader they have rebranded a Land Rover Dicovery.
Unfortunately, the CR-V is not a full off-road vehicle. It's a compromise between road and light off-road. It's a versatile car that's also suitable for the family. It's totally reliable. Real time AWD works well enough for family SUV needs. Of course, the Rav4 is great too. Each of these cars is different..I like them both.
@@OutOfTheWay4x4 Thanks for answering my friend. We did a great job with this video. I just wanted to say that Honda can't stand against Toyota in terms of 4x4 systems.

It's a matter of personal taste..But in reliability, the CRV and Rav4 are far ahead of the Forester. Otherwise, you're right, the Forester has really perfect AWD.
I think the most shocking part of this video is that you were able to test and review these 2 super clean specimens. All of the 2nd Gen CR-Vs around my area are turfed. Lol.
You must be a Honda lover...You got the Rav4 stuck (2:37) did'nt drive with much power. The CRV you made sure to have enough power going forward (11:25), not to get it stuck....
When I drove the Toyota Rav4 through the same spot, the ground was frozen. The car fell through and got stuck in the ice. Normally, the Rav4 would have no problem getting through.
I had a 2001 RAV 4 and now have a 2005 CRV. The biggest problem with 2nd gen RAV 4's is that they have notorious ecm's that cause hard shifting. Once that's repaired or replaced however, they're both decent all-around vehicles aside from poor fuel economy at about 19-22mpg.
Toyota Rav 4, I drive it everyday and everywhere, sometimes I forgot to change the oil, because I am used to put only fuel, my neighbours are mechanics and they are already mad at me 😂😅

Yes, but what I pay for gas, I save on service.. 🙂 Plus, all larger SUVs get better gas mileage.
@@OutOfTheWay4x4you mean larger suvs get worse?
@@XDMIIIIIIIIIYes, I spelled it wrong. I'll correct it. Of course, I thought the bigger the car, the more fuel consumption.
Something like the Honda CR-V and RAV4 gen 2 will never be produced again..
I drove and loved both cars. great video, really enjoyed it!
I love my 05 CRV. But I definitely keep it on the road and take care of it. Hope it's still going in 20 years. I have absolutely zero interest in brand new vehicles with their high cost and unnecessary complexity.
Yes I agree... Cars like the older CRVs are no longer made today.

Very good comparison video of both vehicles.....so the crv is way more comfortable & practical judging from your video....

Amazing video, thanks for sharing!

Veľmi poučné video, ďakujem 👍
Excelente video... !!!!😄
More economical , motorway can reach to 6l/100km or around 47mpg (D4D engines)
Both cars are very reliable and i think here is much about your own choice . If you decide to get diesel bear in mind that the clutch are very expensive and need to be careful about bad diesel fuel , also DPF EGR Turbo if driving in city i dont recommend or make sure to using engine cleaners
Petrol engines are bulletproof and can easy be instaled LPG (GAS) if available and allowed in your country
Toyota Rav4 is necessary to be replaced oil differential on every 60000 KM or 40K Miles which is half of the others crossovers , about Honda CRV make sure you using Genuine Honda Oil , is not expensive !
Is your own choice which one you take , they wont let you down if you love and treat them right , you going to have long journeys without to worry you break down or your wife drive through the curb. I'm already owner of the both manufactures and i will always choose JAPANESE !
Very well written! 👍

Always Honda ❤️🔥
For tall people CR-V is nice. Iam 185 cm tall, when sit in front passenger in back have space to sit comfortable.
Inside space is far bigger then rav4. Got 2003 2 gen CRV for about 1 year, probably over 300k miles, still running great.
Yes, the CR-V is roomier and more comfortable. And Honda's cars are generally among the most reliable in the world. But I don't think Toyota is behind in reliability...And I loved driving the Rav4.
Very good description for all people, keep going !
Thank you!
Bueno espero me puedas responder
Hola.
Nice thorough comparison.
Of these two, which one is quieter with road and wind noise? And which one has the smoother riding suspension??
There is a wasted space under the table because in Japan the crv was sold in two distinct finishes, with or without the spare wheel on the door.
@rayal4860 The tank could have been expanded into that empty space and not have to stick out stupidly on the chassis. The spare wheel on the tailgate gives the CRV just the right amount of style.
Yes, this space could have been used for that
But on a Honda factory assembly line, it would have been too complicated (and too much money!) to separate spare-wheel frames on the trunk and spare-wheel frames in the floor.
I really like mine, but these are a few things that make me say, "What were they thinking?"
Thanks for all the time you put into making this video!
2 things I'd like to suggest:
- A little less music, so we can hear the engines doing their thing, and the exhaust, and the tires.
Considering an CRV II also, but fuel consumption is a bit high on petrol. Is the 2.2 diesel problematic?
Toyota Rav4 is best..
I just wish someone will bless my family with any of these SUVs . Its highly needed now oh ❤
We're looking of thinking into it with my mechanic, but it takes a lot of time (which he doesn't have!) and a bit of money (which I don't have!!)🙂
Thanks for sharing this great video. Now which one should i buy 🤔
Both are good..the CRV is roomier and the Rav4 is a bit better off-road - it has permanent all-wheel drive. I would recommend looking at both cars in person and taking them for a spin...Watch out for any rust on the chassis. I'm sure it also depends on the condition of the car..
Can we have more videos on the CRV please ❤
Check out this channel, it's full of videos of the CR-V 😉
@@OutOfTheWay4x4 already subscribed bro keep it up 👍
Im currently deciding between both cars.

What is your choice rav4 or crv ?
As I've written here before.. Both cars are amazing, quality and are true SUV icons. They're each a little bit different. The Honda CR-V is primarily front-wheel drive. The rear wheels are added automatically when needed. Unfortunately, it doesn't work as well off-road as the Rav4's permanent 4x4. But the CR-V is roomier and more comfortable. I'd go with this: If I had the car as a family car at the same time, I would definitely choose the CR-V. If I were on my own and only had the car for my driving, I'd probably choose the Rav4. It's tough, both cars are just great.

Frist time seeing a diesel RAV4.
Someone already wrote the same thing here. But in our country (Czech Republic) there are very many diesel Rav4 D4-D 2.0. Even elsewhere in Europe..

The King Toyota rav4 and the best car
Which one better for snow?
It's all about the tyres..In the video the CRV has slightly better tyres. Both cars are capable in the snow. But the Rav4 has permanent all wheel drive, which makes it better off road and in snow.
Definitely the CR-V. It absorbs noise well and is perfect on the road. It's better in the corners. It's more comfortable to drive in all directions. Rav4 is more suited for lighter terrain and driving Rav4 is more adventurous 🙂 . I like both these cars. The most comfortable car on the road is of course the 3rd gen CR-V.
I have 4 generation 2012 keep my fingers 🤞🏼 great 🚙 😘
This is the only level of comparison between Honda and Toyota in terms of 4x4 vehicles and even at this level Honda shows its technical limitations .
Size of tires ?
CR-V or Rav4?
CRV HONDA All the way!!!!!
How much do you need these when you have Forester?
It's a matter of personal taste..But in reliability, the CRV and Rav4 are far ahead of the Forester. Otherwise, you're right, the Forester has really perfect AWD.
I think the most shocking part of this video is that you were able to test and review these 2 super clean specimens. All of the 2nd Gen CR-Vs around my area are turfed. Lol.

I like the Honda better.
hi, what size are tires on your toyota?
205/80 R16
I have to say I like both of these cars even though each is different in some ways..
id love to see this with the 3rd gen, specially rav4 with v6 and the crv with the k-series
Toyota Rav 4, I drive it everyday and everywhere, sometimes I forgot to change the oil, because I am used to put only fuel, my neighbours are mechanics and they are already mad at me 😂😅

Yes, I know. I've tried all the positions. It was really rusty... It's been fixed years ago, but it's stuck again.
Good movie , thanks.
There is d1 and d2 in honda. This is in case you want to drive in snow or mud, but my friend probably did not choose to use it.
backseats in the rav4 can only be lifted when the seats are in the backmost position.
Yes, I know. They were in the right position. Unfortunately, the mechanism was rusted. It's been repaired in the past.
i did a lot of research and decided between the 3 best contenders the xtrail was actually the best deal for the money in the Philippines with less terminal problems than both crv and rav 4...i have an rx300 in Canada and if you can afford a bit more money the rx puts these 3 to shame in every department
What generation of the Rx300
Yes Xtrail is fine, but in terms of overall reliability, I don't think Toyota and Honda have many competitors..
