I used the Ned Rig about 70% of the time in a fishing tournament on lake Egypt in Illinois. I was the only person to catch a limit. everyone else had 1-2 fish and i was culling. This bait is a monster and like many others, I discovered it from mystery tackle box. truly unbelievable. I ordered 4 sets of hooks and worms. Best investment I've ever made. Thanks for the video!
This rig saved our butts up in Minnesota last year. Cold front came through...still nailed the smallies and walleyes with this rig. Had basspro overnight the rigs and new line. 2 days delivered
.... and look at the high blue bird sky. For those that may not know, that means a high pressure system that typically follows a front that past through. Bass do not like high barometer if they are say < 18 feet deep. Dead sticking a bait like the Ned Rig is perfect for that sky condition. I just wish our local tidal water wasn't so stained to muddy most of the time. Great video. .
I have a tournament this weekend on Lake Springfield in Illlinois Im really excited to try this bait there on some shallow points and around deeper boat docks
Just bought some ned rig heads and was going to cut up some senkos. You just convinced me to get a refund and buy the Z-Man kit! Thanks as always, Glenn!
I moved to a very heavy pressure public water in CO and my first evening with a ned rig I caught two. Try it out! Even finicky bass can’t stop themselves from giving it a taste!
tried this out in the central valley (Cali) and it worked great in a high pressure area that get fished allbday every day. so far I'm impressed thanks for the tip!
Excellent Video, caught them this year on the Ned Rig at Table Rock, Diamond Valley, Puddingstone, big bear, El Prado and in Salt Water. All the Bass Pro Shops were sold out by Table Rock including Headquarters. I used a color called New Money. Buy this bait, you won't regret it!
After watching your vid I've been using the Ned rig in the ultra clear sand pits in my area. It really is the ultimate finesse technique!! Thanks for the great vid!
Neds my new best friend! I fished it for the first time last week. Missed more than I caught the first day, but since then my catch rate has gone thru the roof with two 4 lbs being the best.
I don't understand why this is so exciting. I've been using 3in senkos on ball and mushroom heads for years to catch finikey smallies on Lake Erie and it's tributaries
Ya but the senko's aren't buoyant like he was saying.. Strike king used to make some soft plastics that would float and were indestructible as well.. Only thing if you keep them in the heat they would melt. They still might make them.. I haven't been in the game in a bit like I once was.
I am one that does cut Gary yamamoto's and yum dingers in half mainly because I don't think there's a wrong way to fish this with all my experiences with it. There's no question the Z man has the best action and performance vs other senkos/dingers. I like using those because z-man doesn't make them in colors red shad, Okeechobee, Bama etc. those are the colors I like to throw. I still got a lot of Z man TRDs but it's not often I use the other brands because different ways I fish them. I've done well just throwing it out there and swimming it back slowly. but the Ned rig is awesome and this is a great video and I'm a finesse style fisherman I personally like using the Texas Rig for largemouth bass when I do tournaments and I look at this rig as than as the Smallmouth version of the Texas Rig if you know what I mean. When I do bass tournaments from a kayak I love throwing this on the lakes that have a good population of both because my chances of catching one or the other are good I've caught a lot of large mouth off these, and this is a pretty affordable way of fishing to compare the high-dollar lures. I do use the mushroom jigs during tournaments though from the z-man but any other time of also had great luck with regular shaky heads or any upright head. all-in-all I wish I would just commit to the rig more often because it's done me so well. This is a good video and still learned from it thanks!
within three casts using the Ned rig, I hooked up my PB bass! pic attached. have been using this a lot since. works very well! thanks for the great tip!
The Ned rig works just as well with any one of fifty worms. There's no need for a special worm like you have, or for a Senko, or for anything expensive. If you want to use that bait, that's fine, but you shouldn't say it won't work with anything else because it will. The Ned rig was around, and famous, well before those worms you have were ever used. In fact, like almost every technique out there, the Ned rig was around for God only know how long before it was ever named. It's been around since plastic worms first hit the market. A number of worms float, and a number have floating tails, not that a floating tail is a must. I don't want my rig to look like a bait fish, I want it to look like a worm. We've been using the Ned rig since before I was born, and I'm an old man now. The whole point of it is simplicity and finesse, not complication that comes from needing a special worm. At heart, it's nothing more than downsizing, convincing fish to bite when they don't want to eat anything big, or chase anything that's active. Senko is not the only worm on the market, and bass don't read brand names before they bite. Bass just don't care what's fish on some rigs, and the Ned comes very close to being just such a technique. That's the beauty of it, and when you try to turn it into something that will only work well if you attach a specific bait to it, you may as well just use a different technique altogether.
James Ritchie well said . Leave it to the bass guru types to try and complicate such a simple bait. Keep it simple stupid applies to the so called method. Fish on my good man.
James Ritchie The action of the elaztech only improves with each fish and is insanely durable, which is the opposite of pretty much any other plastic on the market. (Not to sound like a paid advertisement or anything, just my experience.) That being said, if you can fish it more "economically" with different tackle and it's just as effective, I don't see why you shouldn't!
James Ritchie As to the comment that the Ned rig is nothing new, this is absolutely true. Ned himself bemoans his name being attached to it and attributes much of the credit to a whole slew of anglers, perhaps most notably Chuck Woods, for contributing to the development of the methods used in the Midwest finesse style we know today.
James Ritchie well said! I buy the cheapest plastics I can find and I don't even think that I own any of the "it colors" and I catch more fish than my friends who all have the "latest and greatest" stuff. Junebug, cherry seed, tequila sunrise, pumpkin seed, white, and bubblegum.... I think that's about all I throw, and those colors have been around since I was a child just starting out (I am 41). They are the colors that my Dad used and he made quite a bit of money fishing. If they were good enough for him, they are good enough for me. *edit* and everyone saying that you HAVE TO use a mushroom headed jig is just absurd.... a cheap pack of "grub jigs" with a square head works just as good.... so do regular ol' round ones. And you can't forget Slider heads with an offset hook, they will come through anything and that worm will stand straight up.
If a person would rather use actual halves of senko style baits, you can get off brand versions of the baits, like lockett lures(5.50$ for a 25 pack atm!), in bulk packs for really cheap. The durability of Elazteck sounds good though. To each their own.
What are the best conditions to fish this lure? Tried it for the first time a week ago for the last hour of fishing and didn't get anything. It was evening, an hour before sundown and 90 degrees. Rained for two days prior and the bank, where I was fishing from, is next to a pier and had some jetski and boat traffic out in the main body of the lake, only got wake movement from the occasional show off jet skier. Water was turned up and not very clear. I'm thinking these were probably the worst fishing conditions to fish the ned rig, LOL.
You are correct. With fishing, it comes to down to location and presentation. You had the right presentation for post-front conditions, but probably needed to be deeper.
Just a note: fluorocarbon does not absorb water, it's just more dense than water and therefore sinks. Monofilament, even copolymers, generally do absorb water, which is one of the main reasons it has to be replaced more frequently than the fluoro.
True. I don't find that water absorption means line has to be replaced very often, even though that's the common belief. Mono absorbs water like a sponge, but I've had mono that lasted for four years of steady fishing.
Randy is correct: high quality fluorocarbons don't absorb water. The chemical bonds are very tight and it simply has a much greater specific gravity than water which is the cause of its faster sinking rate. So does monofilament with a specific gravity slightly greater than water . . . so it often floats for awhile owing to surface tension but it gets pulled under by its own weight and any terminal tackle. I think James "can" be correct with some of the better monofilaments these days; but, just in general, if something is capable of absorbing water, it swells and contracts as it is wetted and dried . . . and it causes deterioration. Monofilament lines, again in general, are also negatively affected by sunlight and undergo oxidation. So, most of us can figure this out . . . we sort of know when our line is becoming weak and we replace it. Other than this one factual error, this is a really nice video and he's a great teacher, I think. Brad
well done sir i learned alot from u thanks i am gonna try it tomorrow i just got 2 bags trd and 2 bags shroom jig i also got the roboworm ned rig worm in morning dawn hi=ope they work

MERC Killa It will work, although not ideal. I recommend loosening the drag on the reel to ensure you don't straighten the hook during the fight. Good luck!
the ned rig can be used with a wider variety of retrieves. While people often fish the ned rig on the bottom you can swim and work however you would work any jig. The exposed hook gives easy hooksets when using light line. Its more versatile and can cover much more water.
Nice!!! Thank you Glen Another great video, Great detailed information, always looking forward to viewing your videos. I'll be trying this new technique soon, would you say this is a all year round type bait or is there a peak time of year to fish it? P.s. just bought a new kayak! so expanding my bass fishing experiences. Thanks again Sam
+samuel flores Hi Sam, it's a good year 'round technique. I like it especially during the colder months, but have caught fish on it throughout the year. Congrats on the kayak. Enjoy!
+Chad Williams This isn't something youd want to throw into the thick of the grass, but I've had some good success casting it to weed/ grass edges and just letting it fall there.
30 40 or 50 fish on a single elaztech without tearing it up, I would of snagged it and lost it well before then, any videos or tips on cutting down on tackle losses due to snagging ,anybody?
seriously! this is starting to drive me nuts. . . I am a bank fisherman and like to go light and move a lot. I will take a handful of different color plastics and place them in a bag together or in my chest pack. After a couple hours fishing in the heat the TRD will have molding all of my plastics together. . . Yes I am catching lots of fish with it but damn this is a pain!
Love the video. Now that being said I still think it's funny how these guys r always like this is a public lake blah blah, yea ok so what, all us normal people get to fish r public lakes an I for one almost always get my limit.
Have to disagree, Senko's do actually do work better, the action on the Senko is better than the TRD by Z-Man. Used both recently, my partner used the Z-Man TRD, I used a 3" Fat Senko, I caught 4 to his 1, same color, same size of line. This presentation will catch fish like crazy, not all bass, but you will get hit fast and often.
I don't mean to be a "Debbie Downer" but the concept of a Senko "not working" when used on a Ned Rig is flat out false.. Yes, the Z Man TRD may work BETTER due to it being not as dense as a Senko but a normal Yamamoto Senko has been working wonders for me.. Again, not trying to expose anything here but a Senko does work just fine. The Z Man TRD allows your presentation to have a slower fall, which is some situations, would be better. Also, a normal Shakey Head will do the job. Personally, I use VMC's 1/8 oz. Dominator Shakey Head rigged with the hook exposed. Nonetheless, if you're someone who likes saving a few dollars here & there, a Shakey Head & a Senko will work for you.. If you're looking for a Senko that is a little less dense, to give you a slower fall, I reccomend the Yum Dinger.. Dinger's are also a cheaper product versus Yamamoto's, Z Man's, etc.. Just a little friendly reminder that you don't need the "latest & greatest" to receive the same outcome. :) Happy Fishing & Tight Lines!
I used the Ned Rig about 70% of the time in a fishing tournament on lake Egypt in Illinois. I was the only person to catch a limit. everyone else had 1-2 fish and i was culling. glad somebody knows how to rig it up right 👍
Great timing on this one Glen! I was just asking about it on the forums! :)
Lekan Oyefeso Thank you! Glad you liked the video.
The TRD is excellent but I've caught plenty of bass on a senko.
So many colors to choose from. What are good colors for stained water? What are the most popular colors for clear water?
Here's how to choose lure colors: th-cam.com/video/RV2dwkSs_Gc/w-d-xo.html

Ned rig my favorite. Thanks for the video
Mine too! Thanks for watching!
the only problem I had was that the baits actually melted together when they got hot on the boat. Was disappointed in that issue.
Great video and thorough explanation! Going to try it out tomorrow morning hopefully get some nice footage of it.
caught a 4 lb bass on cut in half soft plastic worm with a plain round jig head
This is so thorough! Thank you.

Great! Let me know how you do!
What type of line were you using again?
Hey Glenn I have a new rod coming tomorrow its a Kistler klx med fast. Do you think it's light enough to use for the Ned rig?
Robert Grasso Yes, a med fast rod is a good choice for this technique.
Thanks for the video. Which copolymer do you prefer for the NED rig? McCoys mean green is extremely buoyant, so I'm guessing you prefer Pline or Yozuri's more neutral characteristics.
Richard B I use Yo-Zuri

Can't wait to try this out. Thanks!

Does the water depth matter?
best pond fineness bait Trd and 1/32-1/16oz no higher hopping or lift and hold
That’s a good tip as well, NOTa Glass. Thanks for sharing.
How about salt water? I'd love to try this for inshore shallow water spotted bay bass and small halibut. Other fresh water bass techniques are already proven for their salt water cousins here in California, as well as the halibut (flounder).
I've been using a 1/4-3/8 oz swing jig with these TRD baits with success on calicos and sand bass. The extra weight helps with extra casting distance and managing the waves.
Great Video Glenn Covered it all.

Awesome. What size works best? 1/8 oz? Also what color for clear water?
1/10th, green pumpkin
Hi Glenn, how would a medium heavy fast(says 1/16 to 5/8) work on this rig? It's the okuma concept c3-40x 6"10 medium heavy.
MERC Killa It will work, although not ideal. I recommend loosening the drag on the reel to ensure you don't straighten the hook during the fight. Good luck!
Thank you for the help! I ended up going with a med lt Abu Garcia volatile.
Where was this filmed? Very beautiful and Smallmouth to boot!
Up in the pacific northwest.
Almost worthless on grass lakes like Guntersville, Nickajack, and Chickamauga. Great on Tims Ford, South Holston, and Douglas.
Whats the advantage of ned rig over shaky head rig? Shaky head can use a mushroom head but is rigged texas style?
the ned rig can be used with a wider variety of retrieves. While people often fish the ned rig on the bottom you can swim and work however you would work any jig. The exposed hook gives easy hooksets when using light line. Its more versatile and can cover much more water.

After a couple hours fishing in the heat the TRD will have molding all of my plastics together. . . Yes I am catching lots of fish with it but damn this is a pain!
@@crux321 you can't store elastech with other types of plastics. They will melt.
On a windy day to you cast on the windward or leeward side of the boat?
Both
Only bad thing about zman elaztech is that they will melt in the heat
What size weight of mushroom head are you using?
1/10th oz at the most, usually a 1/6th oz weight.
This is more like a commercial but agree with some aspects.
What color would work for a creek that has clear but kinda stained water?
Green pumpkin
Thanks!
Great video except flourocarbon doesn't absorb water, mono does.
Great reply, except that it's been mentioned many times over in the comments already.
do you use a loop knot
+bill kendrick No. I use a uniknot.
Everything was on point except those dad socks. 😂
Well, actually they have pointed toes, so....
BassResource - Bass Fishing Techniques Touché 🤣 Enjoy the vids.
I call bs on fluorocarbon messing up the action.
Great
thanks--good vid
Potholes?
Mmmmmmaaybe. ;)
This was invited by using broken plastics...so use what you want and don't throw away when your plastics break in half
Nice Legs dude :))
Awww, somebody has a man crush!
Indestructible till you forget and put em with the other plastic lures🙄
Love the video. Now that being said I still think it's funny how these guys r always like this is a public lake blah blah, yea ok so what, all us normal people get to fish r public lakes an I for one almost always get my limit.
limit of what type of fish?
+Tom Fenger LMB an I always toss em back after I weigh my best 5
+kushcrumbleshatter1990 good man! I was praying you weren't catching limits of bass every time out and keeping them! Tight lines!
+Tom Fenger Oh hell no! lol same to you brother
i thought it was called a neko rig
fernandooooooooo909 neko is a whacky rig with a nail weight in the head of the worm. Another good technic for when the bite is slow.
Rick Poteet senkos do NOT work better. There are countless videos that show this. The senko lays down flat where as the z man trd stands up straight
SWIMMING HOGS FISHING old trick to fix that.... inject a little air in the rear of the bait with a syringe 😉
I love to what fishing videos and learn new things too try, however this is just another info commercial!!!!!!!!!!
Unfortunately the rig snags alot more then any other bait I've fished.
Then get weedless Ned rig jigs.
Cody James what hook size works best? 1/8? I got 1/8 Mustad Ned rig hooks
