I see what you are going to do next (something like what you did w/ WWDC 2021,right?)
Those "dimples" in the keys are just artifacts of low production/fast/prototype injection molding, not durability testing.
It didn't bong when the power button was pushed, kinda makes sense that it failed the power on self test. What caused it though is a mystery.

@@BoxyBoy Maybe in modern versions but im not sure you can in such an old mac.
Could also be bad speakers, I’ve heard it’s a common issue with these 17 inch powerbook. Mine also doesn’t have working speakers.
@@EvilTurkeySlices I'm thinking it's either bad speakers or a failed POST since the volume was set to full in Mac OS.

This is such a cool episode. I just wish it was longer.
i legit had one of these, i buy laptops in bulk and had a powerbook that had a red logic board, did not know it was a prototype, ended up throwing it out as it had a broken lcd and no one wanted it, even listed it for free and had no interest in it, i now regret throwing it out
Those key dimples look to me like maybe they didn't have the injection molding tuned quite right, and there was shrinkage. Like I wouldn't be surprised if there is a post or feature molded into the back side of the key at each dimple.
But it didn’t post.
Seeing the inside of that PowerBook gave me flashbacks to when I pulled apart my 15" 5,8 to install a SSD. I had a 12" 6,8 before that, but I found the graphics performance of the GeForce FX Go5200 was holding it back, and upgrading to the 15" model was not only a slight bump in CPU speed, but also big upgrade to the graphics with the mobility Radeon 9700.
The guy who I bought the 12" PB off also asked if I wanted to sell it back to him, so once I got the 15", I just sent the 12" back for free since he gave me a great deal to begin with. I got a pretty good deal on the 15", so that pretty much made up for what I would've gotten for the 12".
Since then I managed to find an aftermarket replacement battery that actually works, and because I imported it from the UK, I managed to find a replacement US American layout keyboard. But I haven't had a chance to replace it yet, since there's a good risk of destroying something in the process.
1:24 I work in a company that also makes devices. It's true that prototypes, especially early ones are usually made of cheaper materials, as long as it doesn't affect hardware in it, because who the hell cares how it looks? Certanly not devs.
One of the devices that I actually still use daily IS a prototype(and is an DVT), and it's chasis is very different from final. The color is black instead of what is final, it has rough edges, and the buttons are not as clicky as on finished product. If I looked closer I probably would've found more differences.
What device do you use that's a prototype? One of your company?

Its a different texture to case because the prototype stage doesn’t require any finish work. This is just a fit and usability version. Probably half way through the test stage. Plus the tooling will not be ready anyways.

I’m really loving the prototype board content!
I still have one of the last models of the G4 Powerbook and its box with "All" its original accessories, including the protective cover for the keyboard so it doesn't scratch the screen.
Nice to see a a prototype though. I know prototype are your thing.

First when I saw the scratches on the lid I legit thought for a second or two that this PowerBook belonged to “how to basic”

My Powerbook G4 17" 1.67 GHZ, 2 GB SD Ram is still running strong and all, replaced Hard drive, DVD drive DIY.

What is it with PowerPC and the color red that always leads to bricks, whether PowerBook, Xbox, or PlayStation? I mean, you'd think IBM's partners would account for heating (in the X360 and PS3's case, I'm unsure about PowerBooks (I was born post Y2K, so no personal experience with them)?

Man do I miss 17in MacBooks. I know the new one is 16in so it is nice to see they do still care about lager laptops
Too bad the last of them were 2011s, with their self-destructing video subsystems. I had one, video failed, had that board re-flowed, worked for a little while and died again. Really nice machine, but 2011 Apple laptops were bad news across the line. RIP.
Random .. seeing Ken et al not using a grounding wire ... it seems that a grounding wire was once recommended or am I imagining that suggestion?

0:04 And prototypes seems to become ever rarer. By the amount of boneheaded mistakes in macbooks in the last ~10 years (at least) they don't seem to do any prototype anymore.

I went to Walmart this morning and in the as seen on tv area there more more "artic air coolers there. One is a little pocket size artic air, another is one you put around your neck, and one that says ultra artic air. Seems they must be doing well in selling them to come up with these gems.
Also I seen a 6 can mini fridge that holds 6 cans of whatever you like to drink as long as it's a regular 16 oz. Has coke cola brands a red, a grey one for diet, sprite, and also seen a Budweiser one too! They have both an AC and a car charger cord. They are 29.00 dollars. Does anyone know if these are any good would love to get one if they do keep your drinks cold? Love to have it in the car for traveling and maybe camping

I bought my New wife an ipod for her birthday in 2007 or 8, can't really remember, only for it to fail after 13 months- as I had paid a huge amount of British pesos for it, I was rather pissed off, and so have never bought another apple product ever since, and never will! they shot themselves in the foot with their greed and inbuilt redundancy so F**K Apple forever. (nowadays I could have repaired it thanks to Big Clive TH-cam Channel)
