    I flew on many dc9's and md80's in my lifetime. I sure wish they were still flying. The hours and miles that were put on these aircraft is unreal.

    Nice landing. How many jillions of miles (and passengers) have been flown by DC-9s and MD-80s over the years? Quite a history for an airliner.

    This is as cool as it gets! You're so lucky you got to take this video from the jumpseat. This is flying at its finest, nothing compared to airbus or flying computers today. Also, this looks like a Legacy American Airlines MD-82! Let's enjoy these bad boys while we can before they retire this September!

    haha i now see its common to discuss instrument errors while on final on the MD80.. we had the same discussion about a difference in G/S signal between ADIs and HSIs, still a really fun and awesome aircraft to fly!

    I love the MD 80. I am not sure why there is so much cockpit noise though. What is it from?

    • @TakeDeadAim
      @TakeDeadAim 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Look at the nose. They're not as aerodynamic as many others. You get more noise from the wind but very little from the rear mounted engines.

    I miss the DC-9 and the MD-80. I also miss the DC-10. I read that, when McDonnell Douglas identified and fixed the problems with the DC-10, it became one of the safest planes in the skies. Kind of reminds me of the story of the Boeing 737 MAX. Was that American Airlines? I ask that because DFW is the biggest hub for American and American has been a big user of the DC-9 and the MD-80.

    What is the squeaky sound at 1:39 when landing gear touches ground? I hear that sound on MDs and DC9s but don't know what it is.

    • @flaps4038
      @flaps4038 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Its the speed brake deploying, the md 80 had a very noticeably loud mechanic for the speed brake lever! But you can hear a similar noise with the 737 when it touches down.

    Does anybody know what's causing the buzzing type sound that is found on all MD80 cockpit videos?

    • @cobra10908

      "Trim in motion" audible warning

    • @DrSeuss-rt2ou
      @DrSeuss-rt2ou 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      When horizontal stabilizer trim speed exceeds a pre-set point, an audible buzzer sounds. This is accompanied by by a woman's voice announcing "stabilizer motion." It is telling the pilots that the trim system is working, very hard, to keep the aircraft in a stable, trimmed state.

      @@Jesus-ey7cu They use their eyes, combined with their experience in setting the power needed to maintain the desired approach speed and make minor adjustments to pitch to maintain glidepath, within a proper descent rate. It's harder to describe than to do. You just keep the touchdown zone in a fixed position on the windscreen, maintain the correct speed, adjust for wind descent rate fluctuations, and the rest works itself out.

      He’s visual. He’s on 17L which is an up slopping runway here in DFW so if you come on the GS you will be high on the papi’s and a true approach should be 1 white 3 red on 17L if you want to hit the touchdown zone. Nothing unsafe or unusual with that approach. Stop arm chair quarterbacking in the youtube comments.
