  • I would have never expected this visit and I definitely would have never expected their takeoffs to go down the way they did. It's been awhile since Ive seen an MD80 locally.
The last time I got to enjoy them was in November 2019 when Delta sent theirs for the last time. A private MD came a few months later but that doesn't really count in my eyes as it happened at night while I was home; although that is the last time that I can recall that an MD came to Nassau. Fast forward to these past few days. We got two unexpected visits from an "airline" that seems quite far from home with a crew that was very antsy to show off what an empty Maddog can do.
If this is the last time I see an MD80 locally, I definitely cant complain.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note* They came back a third time (on the 8th) after this video was posted.
*During the 3 times they came, they took off the same way every time, and the climb rate at one point for all 3 takeoffs exceeded at least 7500fpm.

I'm going to try to answer as much FAQs in this pinned comment as possible here because a good portion of viewers are not reading the description, watching the video in full to get all the details before commenting or checking to see if their question isn't already answered in the comments.
    1) The plane was empty.
    2) The reverser did deploy, just dirty from APU Exhaust.
    3) She visited 3 times and took off like this every time.
    4) The shots in the video are from her first 2 visits.
    5) To the sceptics, Flight Trackers prove that this happened.
    6) Climb rates exceeded 8000fpm.

I saw a video of a DC-3 that was stripped down to all but 2 rivets and completely rebuilt with new skin, updated framework and equipment, and a couple of turboprop engines (on longer mounts to make up for the lack of weight/balance from the old heavy piston engines). Turned out to be a fine back-woods cargo plane for rough airfields. Solid design really.

Thank you for this video! I have proof the MD can do this now! One Monday morning I was on the first Delta flight of the day from Knoxville to Atlanta. A bunch of guys on the plane were talking to each other like they knew one another but took different seats as they boarded down the isle. One set next to me, I was in a right side window seat between the engine and wing. So I asked how they all knew each other. He replied, "We're all Delta pilots that live in the area. I have a place on Watts Bar, we are riding into Atlanta to fly for the week. Take of is going to be fun." He wasn't joking, instead of the normal leasurely stroll out if McGhee Tyson, the pilot licked the brakes, ran the engines and left with a vengeance. No one believes me that an MD series max angle of attack leaves the floorboard four rows in front of you level with your head. It was awesome. Congratulations, you proved my story!! Thank you!

So, my buddy and I were both Delta MD88 first officers at SLT on thru flights. He was a F106 jockey and watched a F15 depart on a Viking departure. Tower said that departure was a vertical climb to 10,000’ with a push over and out to the test area. My buddy requested a Viking departure for his Delta flight. Tower paused…..and he asked for an immediate Viking descent after the departure. Tower cracked up and denied the request!

I used to watch the Allegiant MD-80s taking off out of St. Pete/Clearwater and many times they'd climb out just like this. When you're looking at it, it's kind of shocking because it almost looks like it shouldn't be possible.

I was on a Delta MD from Daytona Beach to Atlanta that had been delayed by weather for about three or four hours one night. By the time we started boarding, it was late in the evening, and most of the other passengers had apparently found other flights or deferred to the next day, as there were only a couple other pax on the plane with me. The cabin crew seated us the front of the plane, and the pilots must have been in a hurry to make it to Atlanta, because as soon as we were boarded we got pushed back. They taxied to the runway like it was a sportscar going around the DIS infield roadcourse, with the landing gear jouncing and skipping over the concrete expansion joints in the turns. Never even slowed down after the turn onto the runway, just firewalled the throttles and seconds later we were airborne and climbing like a rocketship. Boarding delay aside, fastest trip ever to Atlanta!

Some years ago, I was on a Delta MD88 from Monroe, LA to Dallas, back when Delta still flew mainline to Monroe and they still had the Dallas hub. It was only 12 passengers on board. I said to the 1st officer "it's gonna be a steep takeoff, isn't it?" He smiled and said "oh yeah!"
That was the most fun I've ever had on a jet!

Amen to all that. I flew them for Continental until my 60th b'day in 2001 (mandatory age 60 retirement for pilots at that time). They soon after changed the age to 65; but no grandfather clause to the rule, once effective. I loved that plane. Last trip was Houston to San Francisco for a double overnight (one free day there), then back to HOU. Was able to take wife, daughter and son-in-law, my sister all along in 1st class. The company really treated us super. I'm coming up on age 80 in December, and I still now and then get the itch to get out the AFM and run through the checklists for a couple of "arm chair" flights like we used to do when boning up for a check ride.

Sleek, fast and ultra high performance. On test hops out of HOU they would often stand them on their tails and just GO! When they retired all of the 9s & 80's the fun went out of working there. Then they compounded the misery by hooking up with UAL. Like adding alcohol to a wound.

In '64 I was privileged to go to the Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, with my parents and my maternal aunt and her fiancé (later my uncle). My aunt had an 'in' with ABC broadcasting in those days and secured the travel for us. At one point as I'm getting settled in my seat (window!) my father leans-in and tells me that the captain had told him that we would be "going upstairs in a hurry" to get above the weather. I'm not yet eight years-old and it's my second flight but somehow I figured out that something cool was going to happen after we took-off. Up we went through the clouds into the sunlight and I'm pressed back in my seat and it feels glorious.
One other standout moment was dinner on that flight which consisted of small, multicolored roasted potatoes, roast beef and multicolored confetti coleslaw. The roast beef, in memory, was so good that it set the standard for what I grew to expect when having roast beef for the rest of my life. There's a restaurant near where we live that serves prime rib au jus that comes very close because it makes me think of that thrilling take-off over fifty-seven years ago. That is remarkable to me.

I subscribed because of your channel name- I love the DC9/MD80/MD90/B717 series of aircraft. I flew from Little Rock, AR to Baltimore, MD in the early 90s on a Northwest Airlines DC-9-14 that was manufactured in the late 1960s. The round air conditioner vents above the seats were made from metal instead of plastic and the cockpit had the original gauge layout. I've also gotten to fly on TWA's DC-9s and their service was excellent. In coach, I had drink service, a real meal service, and the flight attendant handed out magazines, hot towels and coffee afterwards. I've also flown on L1011 (Delta first class to Hawaii), B717, B727, B737, B757 and B767 and ATR-72 but my favorite will always be the DC-9/MD-80 series. Thank you for the great videos and keep up the good work! ❤️✌️🙏

I watched MD 80 - 88's take off to the north at DCA (gravely point) back in the day and those planes used almost all the runway. They needed a lot of speed due to the hard banking turn after departure. I always made sure I booked an md 88 coming and going out of DCA. Landing down the river was just as fun. They made fighter pilot approaches as they turned over the river to avoid restricted air space. I believe they called those carrier landings.

Used work as a Mech on the MD80 20 years ago. A real mech's plane, over powered and built to take it. As an instructer of mine said years ago, they were fly by wire, some the wires were 1/16" thick, others were 1/2" thick. None of that power assisted steering stuff that modern jets have!

MD-80 got off the ground, cleaned up, stayed in ground effect, and used that to pull this off. At ERAU they called this a "shuttle launch". Take off, punch the WOT while staying in ground effect, till you had to had to push on the yoke to stay down. Then pull back on the yoke. You nearly went nose vertical in a 172 for like 1500'.

well....; pilot school...... (?)........ // stay within ground effect ? : = 1/2 of the wingspan above rwy...... / the crew leveled-off higher than that // So they did sacrify some of the max performance

    • @12345fowler
      @12345fowler 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@danizweifler6061 Yeah ground effect is usually talked about for landing as it can spoil a greaser and/or complicate a runway limited landing if you float it too long cause of ground effect. There is zero sense to talk about it once airborne tough. The "ground effect" when accelerating way past V2 above the runway becomes a negligible effect compared to the normal lift provided at this moment.

you can see the way he did that ‘ROCKET - CLIMB’ right there; he got off the ground first, pulled up his wheels (reducing drag) than leveled out to be able to accelerate easier; bring it up to about 250 knots and full throttle turning the nose upwards (AS FAR AS IT WILL GO)

When she initially held short, I noticed that there was a plane on final that she was waiting on. And because a lot of container trucks were passing, I decided to change vantage points before she took off so the shot wouldnt be ruined. Day 2 was when I caught the landing and went on the side of the airport for the takeoff.
