Use baking soda and 30% peroxide and make a paste. Coat yellowed plastic parts with paste. Put in plastic ziplock out in the sun for hours. The UV light from sun and peroxide paste will get rid of the yellowing and bring back original color.
This process is known as RetroBright and, having done it with some old Lego myself, it doesn't really last. About 2 years after doing it, the white bricks I did this on are yellowing again. Details here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retrobright I think you'd be better off sanding and spraying.
Love Stu's - "WOH WoH don't tempt fate" to not jinx it all, that is so good! Great work again Stu and Marina, looking good in the toilet area and the little jobs must feel like things getting ticked off a lil bit more. Its great to see you each week, keep going good luck!
I'll be honest, it's more fun having the job completed. 🤣😂😅 We are always so happy when a little project is finished as we don't need to think of it again. All this is, is a mountain of tiny projects. Nothing that major yet... Cheers for watching 🙂
Starting to see real progress as every week goes by. It's now my "Must Watch" for a Friday night, like Top of the Pops on a Thursday use to be, back in the 70's. 🙂 Are you both doing this full time or do you have jobs too?
The Piglet and Eyeore show😂. I love how you interchange roles from episode to episode. It’s really shaping up to be a lovely living space. With the world getting crazier by the day, I think that you may be finished just in time to sail away into the sunset to safety together to watch Rome burn. Go well!❤
Your dedication to rebuilding the American wrecked sailboat is truly inspiring! You bring such resilience and teamwork to the restoration project, turning challenges into milestones of achievement. And I'm Floating Village Life.
Thank you. Step by step we'll get. There are no problems when you're on land. The real fun starts when you're surrounded by water. Cheers for watching 🙂
Love watching the progress on Seabird and reading all the cool comments from the great people following along with you…. Stuart and Marina are building up a nice little fan club….almost 40K followers, 70+ Patreons, and couldn’t happen to a nicer couple. Looking forward to the day Stuart and Marina are actually Sailing on Seabird and they bring us all along with them!👍🏻🍻❤️😎
Hello again. Always good when Friday gets here and we see a new video about your work. All these little projects are very interesting. Keep up the good work and enjoy your weekend. Ciao. geo
Hiya, I didn't reply to your comment last. I do apologise. Another week of random boat jobs. A beautiful mix of creative and building (sanding fibreglass) But soon, the grinding might make way for cleaning. What are you working now? Cheers for watching 🙂
@@SailingSeabird oh man! No worries! Your growing channel has become so popular, it takes a lot of time to compose all of those replies. 😆 Just know, that we know, and we’re very happy about that. 😎❤️ We’re still fairing the cockpit, although we did throw some primer on a few spots, just to make us happy. Working on a contraption to level the cockpit sole. Full on restoration mode…three years on the hard this September, but that’s only working every other weekend. Extremely hot, here. LOVE YOU FOLKS! (Hope to see you out there, one day.) ⛵️😎🥰
For the rocker switches, there are numerous online suggestions for restoring yellowed plastic, although some of them can weaken the plastic, start with the least aggresive (washing powder, baking soda, water and rubbing) and work upwards with sanding/polishing as a last resort. I guess masking the gaps by sticking in strips of paper and then spray painting would be too tricky.
Should be able to take those light switches out and sand them and paint them whatever colour you want to make them not look so dirty and fayed away. All I know, is the boat has come a long ways from what it first looked like. You both have made great progress as far as I'm concerned.
Hi Stuart and Marina, another very enjoyable vid. I wish you continued good luck with your boat and am, really looking forward to seeing the end result...I will be with 'til the end...when it gets wet!!! 🤞🤞🤞
You guys are awesome!! Marina your positivity is so sweet…the whole time Stu like shaking his head “ oh no don’t tempt fate”.. with that positive ju ju ..🤣‼️ You guys make me laugh.. so enjoy your journey and thanks for giving the rest of us a snap shot of it. Thank again
Hi Guys. Love the video’s. I’ve just seen something very interesting about boat building safety. It was about designing the boat in such a way as to minimise disaster at sea. It was “sailing Uma, step 398”. I hope you find this helpful. Keep up the good work.
Great video again guys. And on the light switches................let them be yellow. In the 70's I bought a white Les Paul guitar. Now it is "yellowed" and it made it even more valuable.
Tbh, I know it is a bit chaotic, but we like to have a variety of projects on the go as not to get bored, overwhelmed or cramp (being stuck in the bilge is not fun) One horrible job, one fun job. Cheers for watching 🙂
I sometimes start the search on rs (online electronics shop) but when you have 1000's of items you give up. I'm sure we'll find them, not a fan of cutting as it's never as good. 🤣🤣🤣 Cheers for watching 🙂
Thanks for sharing your journey , for the rocker switches on the lamps can't you just buy new ones and cut the brass plates to fit your new switches?? You might want to check out the ones that are put in either a kenworth or peterbilt semi truck, they're durable and shouldn't be that expensive plus you can add a chrome housing around it if they don't line up exactly
Keep checking off those small jobs and before you know it you’ll be on the water heading to your first destination…are y’all planning on an outdoor shower? I may have missed that video 👍
Small jobs = big results Outside shower yes... Cold water and sea water. I have an idea. Hopefully get to the plumbing autumn time. Cheers for watching 🙂
Try a bit of Y10 Oxalic Acid on your yellowing plastics - same as you use on faded gelcoat, it is a marvel at brightening old plastics and you need only use a tiny amount!
Love that cleaned up engine room bilge. Are you building any watertight bulkheads or compartments where you have thru hulls or rudder posts? ( to be fair I just watched Uma pointing out how most boats rarely have this) . Those switches look like regular old american switches , similar to in my house , can you show the entire switch? Cheers Warren
Absolutely love your boat project! Regarding the 4 thru hulls, they seem to be close together. Doesn’t it affect the fuselage integrity? I am sure you checked that but I was just wondering. Good teamwork! Rein
@@SailingSeabird your most welcome, watched you from the start. My other half just got level two sailing cert. I would love to have a go but been too poorly. I really admire what your doing and have learnt so much from you guys, incase we get a boat. We live near the sea in Wales... Could sail from here.... One day! Lots of love 💖
you can get the switches and any other heavily yellowed plastic bits retrobrighted if you put them into a plastic food container with 30% hydrogen proxide which you can easily obtain from online or from a hairdresser shop. just dunk them in peroxide and leave them exposed to sun in a locked plastic container for 2 days and they will be good as new
Enjoying the build It might be worth having a look at the latest ‘The Duracell Project’ video where they come up with a really elegant solution to leaking stanchion post brackets
Stuart, your inseparable companion deserves a theme. The 1950s saw the muse’s romantic vision. Music by Caymmi. His muse Marina is the perfect beauty, the definitive work of God. She wears makeup and they fight. She was already perfect for him. She couldn't tarnish her beauty
(Marina and her chain plate humor) *Marina and Stew have an open invitation to all my garden BBQ's and parties! You made me laugh out loud in the middle of my lunch hour, thank you. P.S. Marina, don't let your chain plate start making decisions for you. Sometimes they have a mind of their own. Just ask anyone with an oddly shaped chain plate. It can get you in trouble.
Love your channel. On todays video I had a problem with the voice recording, I think it sounded a bit like you were underwater and I think that has to do with the camera mic pointing away from the person talking. Any Chance you want to add to your Wish List two Wifi Wireless mics you can Clip to yourselves to get better voice recordings for your videos?
Time to go from bow to stern , draw up a list of things to do , its the little jobs that use up more time but it will help you focus and as you tick the list off mentally you will see progress, will soon be time to lower engine in 😃😍
Unless your 100% confident, spend the coin, get them professionally inspected. The chainplates are as important as the rest of the rigging and cracks can be next to impossible to see.
Use baking soda and 30% peroxide and make a paste. Coat yellowed plastic parts with paste. Put in plastic ziplock out in the sun for hours. The UV light from sun and peroxide paste will get rid of the yellowing and bring back original color.
If you slow simmer 1 liter 3% peroxide down to 100ml you'll end up with about 20%-25%, which will also work. If you do this do it slowly
Or...just sanding it down with wet sand and spraying it with plastic paint will do just fine...
This process is known as RetroBright and, having done it with some old Lego myself, it doesn't really last. About 2 years after doing it, the white bricks I did this on are yellowing again. Details here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retrobright
I think you'd be better off sanding and spraying.
For the switches try toothpaste sometimes works. Use to use it on the old dome iMacs to whiten them.
That's a GREAT tip.
I hate buying a product for one job.

Just a can of spray paint and a lot of tape.

I like the pastel yellow in the shower pan!
The switches you can sand with sandpaper with hi grid too get them white
Baking soda and water , make a paste and that will remove the yellowing on plastic !
Coming on very guys - great job. Regards.
You must always have a clean chain plate slot and make sure it’s a tight fit so both pieces benefit 😂

I'm with Stuart never tempt fate when the 1st one is good. Always expect the worst then everything else is better.
Marina you’ll give stu “chain plate” envy waving that weapon around like that. 😂
Stew, someone really like your chain plate😂🌞 what did they call it in the last video, some off-camera work?😂
Love seeing the small jobs your getting there 😊
Little jobs make big jobs...

Great to see the progress! I'm happy for you.
I believe those are commonly called rocker switches. If you go with slightly larger ones you could cut the brass slots larger to fit.
I sometimes start the search on rs (online electronics shop) but when you have 1000's of items you give up.
I'm sure we'll find them, not a fan of cutting as it's never as good. 🤣🤣🤣

Great video as always
I have found that white plastic that weathers to yellow, can be restored to white with acetone.
We'll give it a go.
Someone else said white spirit.
I'm sure we'll get those switches looking pretty.
Thank you.

Its looks every time better 👌

Aloha from Hawaii. Brief comment: try using finger nail polish on your little light switches.
You can try oxalic acid on the lamp buttons.
Spring washers always on the back before the nut
Flat washers inder the head of the bolt
theres a product called novus that restores original appearance to plastics ive used on my projects with great success
Absolutely love your boat project!

use white spirit on the white bits for the light switches.
Thank you for the tip.
