    Coming from the D2 level (I run for Chico state ) I saw a teammate of mine just an hour before this happened in St. Leo. Saw my own teammate crawled for 200m on a downhill finish trying to get to that finish line, screaming my lungs out for him and praying he got to the finish line, and now seeing cooper when this happened. It truly shows anything can happen to anyone on the day, it’s tough, it’s brutal, but man to finish the race is really something.
    This sport can take SOULS on the day and you will never anticipate it.
    More respect than ever to Coop along with my teammate

    It’s not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog. Cooper put it all on the line, pushed his body to the brink to be an All-American, and never gave up. My heart sinks for the fallen soldier but this is an experience that will only make him stronger. Most people never have the courage to push to the point of breaking and wonder, what if…. There is no what if…no regrets.. he has the heart of a champion!!

    Got mixed feeling about this but I did the same thing at Boston marathon one year when it was 84 degrees and i had a bad cold and I went out hard . The heat destroyed me, I was not taking in water and after I finished was rushed to the hospital with severe cramps and dehydration. I am glad that I finished that day cause it was the only chance I got to run Boston and I knew it might be so I didnt want to not finish.Looking back on it all my friends even the guy from Kansas that I looked up to that had run 2:18 marathon all dropped out at 20 miles but I went on. Now a long time later people dont even remember it and I could have had permanent damage . There is always another race down the road and even bekele drops out when things havent gone well. Not sure what the answer is but it sure is a emotional sport

      Same thing happened to me at the Honolulu Marathon. That damned volcano - Diamond Head. I think my last mile was something like 20 minutes. I was averaging sub 6 until around 20 miles, started to run out of gas, slowed to 8 minute pace and then at mile 22, blamo! I was a miler at the time and hitting the wall was completely unknown and alien to me.

      If anyone touched Cooper, Cooper would have been disqualified for receiving assistance. Both Cooper and the medics on the side were aware of this rule, and you can see him turn away the offers of assistance from the other runners so he could finish the race under his own power.

      Just a part of cross country. His body shut down on him. Usually is because of dehydration though. Happened for the girls at states for me last year. Girl was in 1st place by about 30 seconds and ended up getting 3rd because she collapsed like 100m from the finish line

      @@Chasery thanks for explaining. Could it have been some type of heat stroke or only dehydration

    • @Chasery
      @Chasery 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@xctryhard4736 can be a combination of both sometimes. Also can be caused by imbalances in the body such as iron shortages in the blood. No way to know for sure but it really is crazy. Had nothing to do with getting injured. The body just sometimes can't handle the paces that the mind wants to run at. That being said Cooper is still a great athlete who is definitely going to go pro. Just goes to show that cross country is such an insane sport that even the best can fall victim

    • @randystebbins5733
      @randystebbins5733 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, Cooper just definitely gave it all. As Chasery said, probably a combination of a lot of things. He is not used to running in humid and warm conditions so maybe some dehydration. Glycogen stores gone. Lactic acid buildup. As a long time distance runner, I have seen it so many times. There is no quit in strong distance runners. Massive respect to Cooper.

    • @Dilllonm

      he not use to florida weather and they race was taken out faster than ideal, some chemical or energy source that controls muscle movement fell below a critical level so his muscles could no longer work, his body made him stop because it still needs what it has left to keep vital systems going ,, a tougher athlete than pretty much any other out there

  • @LearningFast
    @LearningFast 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Everyone should be extremely concerned for what this video depicts. In a 10k race that shouldn’t happen to an elite athlete like that. Something else was going on. They really should check him out thoroughly. That wasn’t just someone giving it their all. That was someone having a medical emergency.

    • @randystebbins5733
      @randystebbins5733 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Cooper Teare was fine after the race and some rest. I agree that there could be a medical emergency in someone going through the stuff he went through, but more likely not. It can happen in a 10K or any other distance race. It appears that he just went out too fast and he used every bit of everything he had to keep going and just had nothing left at the end. As a long time distance coach, I have seen this before. If healthy and fit, a person will not likely have a medical emergency and stuff like what happened to Cooper is not likely damaging. Most people just are not willing to go until their body shuts down. And that is the reason you make sure that your pacing is correct. He is absolutely an elite athlete and is not willing to quit for any reason. I get that. However, it appears he tried to go to the front and stay there with a pace that was too fast.

    • @nicolasmow8827
      @nicolasmow8827 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      His glycogen stores were pretty depleted probably before the race even started. Once he came down that home stretch his body had nothing left to keep his legs going. This kinda thing happens more so in marathons and triathlons, but it just depends on what the body has. I’m sure he was fine after a Gatorade and a banana or something. Still sucks to see tho

      @@waterproof4403 Such an ignorant comment. You have no idea what it takes to run a fast 10K and all that goes into it. Cooper Teare is an elite athlete but 10K is not his best distance. Still he is out there giving it all for himself and his team. He had a very tough day and who knows what went wrong. Rest, fueling, dehydration - whatever. He gave more than you ever will.
