The Delusional Edit on Drag Race

  • Who would have thought Jinkx Monsoon would come up with a commercial that would perfectly encapsulate so many queens yet to come?
    Today we're discussing one of the most popular RuPaul's Drag Race edits in recent years: the Delusional Edit. From spoiled Milk to production sabotaging Thorgy Thor. So many queens have been portrayed on the series as delusional, out of their mind, lunatics and we're here to discuss them all.
    From Season 1 to Season 14, there have been a myriad of girls to get this edit. Unfortunately, many of them have also gotten death threats. Friendly reminder to go leave some positive comments on these gals' social medias! And reminder than the edit a queen gets on a reality show is not encompassing her as a human being. We only see a small amount of what a queen's full story is on the show.

    The most important thing I could say: it’s okay to not like the perception of a certain queen based on what you saw in the show, but it’s never okay to actually send them hate and keep disliking them only based on this perception

      Yeahhh I recently went back to season 4 and, now that I work in editing, my heart absolutely breaks for Jeremi. Gurl the things these editors do.... it's truly questionable morals here ladies and gents. Splicing people's sentences together to create actual lies is truly wrong. And it's what we sit here and happily consume.

      Very important message that's relevant for pretty much every season. I don't think a lot of us realized, when getting into the show, how much the producers set up storylines for each queen and match it with confessionals so we'll feel this way, too. Not always of course, but they do try to give us a certain perception.

      @@ev1802 I found Valentina to be annoying on both of her seasons. And her being in on the joke only makes my opinion sour even more. She's actually delusional, she has moments when she's very aware she's delusional and plays it up for the cameras, and does not care because it gets her the attention she wants. She's definitely one of the few queens who is actually probably true to her edit in real life. I don't get the hype around her at all.
      I would never send her hate though. In the very unlikely chance I would ever get to meet her, I just wouldn't fangirl over her like most people would. What pisses me off is that even after 14 years, I STILL fall for the delusional/villain edits. The producers actually succeed in making me dislike some queens, the most recent one being Daya Betty. Although with Jan, the delusional edit was so obvious that it had the opposite effect, it made me root for her even more. The producers and judges were clearly gaslighting her. With that said, I would never, EVER send any queen hate. That's just disgusting, this fanbase really needs to grow up and realize that it's just a TV show and that the producers are only showing us what they want to.

      It's the judges running out of BS excuses to favor whoever was pre-selected to win (that week or that whole season). The thirst for trauma is real, though! When the producers are mad at queens who don't play into the untucked/werkroom drama, they instruct the judges to ding those contestants for some minor thing; if there is no flaw to latch on to, *_then_* queens are told to stop being so perfect and to show their "real" selves.
      It definitely deserves its own video, although it's more riggory than edit. With a villain or delusional edit, events, actions, and dialogue will be manipulated to look completely different from how they happened to create a distorted narrative and make someone look bad. With the "too perfect" girls, we can still see things as they happened and we see when those queens are doing great, even though in the end they get overlooked or dismissed by the judges.
      Either way it's not just Ru, but the producers who are more concerned with ratings than actually picking the best drag superstar, but in their head it's about making "great TV."

      I felt SEEN by this comment? girl! Intrusive thoughts really just pop up to ruin your day, create a mess, then peace out & leave you with the mess. Rude. Anyways, if you’re looking for some tips I gotchu, but if you were just sharing then ignore the essay below please! 😅
      My therapist has helped me overcome some debilitating anxieties by living in ‘my fantasy’. The key is to not do it with important things in life, instead make small routines & rituals to fit the fantasy into your daily life. Day dreaming can be very maladaptive so be careful. Keep it realistic to your lifestyle & create the fantasy around you, not the other way around. It’s a slippery slope trying to live a ‘perfect’ life so make sure the fantasy doesn’t mess up your irl priorities. When you’re in your flesh suit reality you’re human, not flawed. The fantasy is unrealistic for a reason so the utopia you create shouldn’t make you feel worse about your real life, it should add a little spark of joy just for you. If it does negatively impact your life, stop & reconsider if it’s unhealthy or a sneaky intrusive thought undercover agent trying to sabotage your fantasy. Consider your fantasy an interlude from reality where you get to go to your personal theatre & perform. Infusing a little silly energy into your walk to work, making your coffee wearing whatever makes you feel fabulous, doing your makeup for the dolls at the post office, glueing old jewelry to shoes because Katya did that plus it was an opportunity to be grateful for hoarding shit. Usually I’d feel defeated & embarrassed about my inability to throw things away, but instead I was stoked I had all the supplies on deck to start my shoe project!
      Do anything that brings you joy/fulfilment/validation no matter how mundane or small. My intrusive thoughts are now downgraded from a respected advisor to Felicia the nosy neighbour. Just a little bit every day I’m living my fantasy instead of questioning my entire existence because I made my coffee in the ‘wrong’ order. Life’s so much more manageable in this ‘setting’. When I’m present in my body & focused on me, I don’t have time to interact with Felicia & her covert insults. I’m picking my eyeshadows for the day which is a crucial part in my fantasy world so that the resident starts her day with positive & productive energy. I’m nicer to me when I’m vibing & wearing blue shadow & peach everything else for the 100th time.
      This felt so silly at first but now I’ve got at least a novels worth of stories that got me through shit. Life’s barely real so be in your own movie or novel or opera, whatever makes you feel like you’re THE bitch you’re there to see killing it in her element. Embody protagonist energy so you serve for yourself & not the Felicia’s of the world. This kinda wacky plan worked for me because I was writing a story for a character but for other people a more grounded approach is what works for them. Only take what resonates & tailor it to you. Good luck!
      ** Uh… my therapist would haunt me for eternity if I didn’t clarify that these are just quick tips that worked for me in managing intrusive thoughts, they are not a prescribed treatment plan & in no way do I mean to minimize the work it takes to manage or treat a mental disorder by trivializing it or making it seem like it’s something you can just ‘check out of’ or ‘escape’. Please talk to a mental health care provider to find an actual treatment plan for your unique needs if you think that’s necessary. I’m just a random drag race viewer with intrusive thoughts saying shit on the internet & unfortunately that means I’m not a health care provider or mental health expert. Always make sure to take care of yourself & seek out professional help if possible.

Not being herself, being herself way too much, getting vague critics about "something missing" but not being told what exactly she could do about it, getting robbed, thinking that you're safe but then being thrown out.. You know, regarding BRITA on here: I have to say, she's made quite a transformation outside of the show since the edit she's gotten on here. Apparently with all the negative reception she got, it took a major toll on her mental health, to where she took a break from social media for a while. And ever since, she's done a lot for uplifting the drag community during this pandemic, as well as being politically active (she even has a podcast and such about it now). I've had the chance to talk to BRITA a few times since the show, and my respect for her has grown considerably. She's one of those I actually wouldn't mind seeing come back on All-Stars at some point, because I could see her getting a kind of Ra'Jah O'Hara edit from AS6. Like we could see the growth and maturity she's gained since being on the show, and she could be depicted in a more positive light as a result. I mean, reception to Ra'Jah took a complete 180 from Season 11 to All-Stars, I could see the same happening for BRITA. Though, I hope they don't time it to have Aiden back on to try to repeat that storyline. Let BRITA shine on her own merits if she comes back.

    @heymistercarter. 2 ปีที่แล้ว +114

    In regards to Daya on here: while I kinda see your points on getting the delusional edit, I'd argue she's getting more of a villain edit than just a delusional one. Yea, she puts others down and gets frustrated at times where it seems like she's been doing well. On the other end, though, few positive things, if any, are ever said about her apart from these last 2 episodes where she did well. Most of the confessionals about her pertain to how nasty she comes off and the fights she picks with everyone (especially Jasmine), constant eye-rolling and shade rattles with whatever she says and does. Plus, even in things like the reading challenge, something where a lot of the comments are meant to be shown as more playful and razzing, Daya is portrayed as taking this stuff seriously and is legitimately offended by it (namely in the moment where it's her turn and she calls Jasmine's read about her being two-faced out). And unlike someone like Bianca Del Rio, where it seems she's kind of in the right for some of the shady and snarky things she says, here it's portrayed like she's upset and we're supposed to dislike her for it. So while I can see what you were saying regarding a tightrope act between a delusional edit and a villain edit, I'd argue Daya's edit almost leans more towards villain than delusional. That said, you're right, we shouldn't attack people like this online, especially since everyone is more multi-faceted than we think. I've gotten a Cameo from Daya before, and she was very sweet and to-the-point in what she had to say. And I guess we'll see where else the season takes her.

    I think the key to avoiding getting a negative delusional edit is to avoid comparing yourself to other queens (the way Shannel, Milk, and Daya did). Valentina was exceptionally delusional, yes, but it's endearing because we can all relate to "living the fantasy" in order to get through some disappointing or traumatic experiences. I feel like Tammie Brown really set the groundwork for this archetype, and every drag queen should be taking notes and realizing that focusing on being the best version of yourself (whether you win or not) is the best way to compete.

    We're out here, in 2022, on the 14th season of the oldest series of Drag Race, and people are still attacking queens based on edits. I think it's one of the ugliest things of the fandom. If anything, we should see the queens playing characters on RPDR that are loosely based on themselves. I wish that half of the people who send death threats/hate to their DMs should stop and just browse their twitter or Instagram or whatever. They'll realize they're human.

    I find Miss Cracker’s edit so interesting. I remember being in the minority of people who wanted her to win back when AS5 was airing. I think part of that was that I could see Shea winning from a mile away and my natural reaction is to root for an underdog when I notice clear winners (yes I am often disappointed: justice for Divina, Bimini, Ella, Rosé, Janey and Pythia). But I also really related to Cracker in some ways. The edit leaned into her awkwardness over her fights, and as a neurodivergent person I found her situations all too familiar. Seeming like she didn’t mean what she said and not being able to diffuse tension despite wanting to, all of that is very relatable to me. I wonder how much of that was really what was happening for Cracker and how much was editing magic. It makes me feel kinda icky thinking that this neurodivergent-coded portrayal that felt so real to me wasn’t real in the slightest.
    (Note: the queens I listed above were my faves but I think a lot of the queens were very deserving! I don’t dislike the winners, in fact I knew that most of my faves had no real chance to beat them, more that I had other picks in mind.)

    I really live for Daya Betty, I think it’s weird that she was passed over early on in the season… many safe placements should’ve been high for her! Also Lady Camden, it’s so obvious they were planning on chopping her somewhere mid season, but now the audience sees her as a front runner after she finally gets high placements that she could’ve been getting this whole time

    Daya has had one of the weirdest edits I've ever seen. She was eliminated, then she came back and started her delusional edit, then she kinda has a villain edit where she kept going after Jasmine, and now she's just seen as this mischievous shit-stirrer, but in a way that isn't perceived as malicious, just adding a bit of spice. Maybe it's because season 14 is so long, but it seems like they have no idea who they really want to be the antagonist this season. We've seen so many queens take on that role so far: Alyssa, Kornbread for a little bit, Jasmine, DeJa for that one untucked, Daya, and now Bosco. Daya for sure had the longest one, but all of these queens got hate for their portrayal in at least one episode. And we're not even to the end of the season yet.

    daya is just saying what everyone is thinking, i do think her delivery & tone can be off sometimes but i’m loving her this season recently queens have been careful with what they’ve been saying but i love that daya is just speaking her mind

    You have THE best timing. I am SO glad you made the is video right now because I think Daya Betty is unfairly and unfortunately getting a lot of grief online-which I don’t understand because Daya Betty is playing a STELLAR game of Drag Race so far and that’s exactly what we wanna see! I wish people could appreciate Daya’s game even if they don’t appreciate her aesthetic.

    I’m terms of an edit I’d like to see, maybe the edit of the loveable weirdo? Katya, Jinkx, et al? Common traits could include offbeat humour, self deprecation masking insecurities, being underestimated?

    No one was more delusional than Silky nutmeg ganache on her first season. That’s what made her so unlikable, at that time. “My personality cannot be topped”? She was completely delusional and unaware that every other queen had a more likeable personality on that season.

  • @brynniefresh9746
    @brynniefresh9746 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I personally feel like Silky was delusional. every time somebody mentioned something she did wrong she was in the confessional saying she was perfect and everyone is wrong including rupaul and the judges who made comments about thinks she needed to fix and she didn’t fix them. she never seemed that great to me, almost every challenge she didn’t seem to be up to par with the others but was talking like she was the shit and even in the finale she seemed to not be taking it that seriously or like half assing it with her looks…plus she was being ableist to not only yvie but shitju because of their sprained ankle/eds and tendinitis so she was just causing a lot of drama everywhere for no reason

    I just know I would get this edit if I were ever on the show. Some people’s personalities totally flip when they get competitive, I get really bad tunnel vision when there’s something on the line, plus I’m a theatre kid and production hates those.
    Daya is serving wrestling heel realness this season and I love her for it.

  • @yomothersucks
    @yomothersucks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I agree with all of these but Laganja. She is nice NOW but she was acting very offensively to black people with that "personality". A lot of white gay men/people tend to act like stereotypes of black women for attention or comedy. It's unfair to us BW to just ignore that behavior because of mental illness and all.

  • @dundymundybrain1280
    @dundymundybrain1280 2 ปีที่แล้ว +85

    daya isn't my favorite queen but most of her "delusional" moments are her saying things that are just true and it's really annoying. she's not delusional for calling out unfair judging and getting emotional about it, and i think she should be allowed to say it without getting a bad edit because she's RIGHT

  • @TangerineAmnesia
    @TangerineAmnesia หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    This was fantastically put together! When you spoke about Milk being dehumanised due to being shrunk down to simply one trait and that one trait being negative which makes it easy for people to attack her can be applied to so much and was put into words so well! Mama, kudos for saying that. For teaching! 👏🏻

    I think what's crazy about Brita's edit is how much I hated her until when she gets eliminated and says thank you for everything, this is a dream come true. All of a sudden my heart warmed and I felt bad for her. In that moment she made sense.

    Laganja probably could have come off as more sympathetic if she went with being maybe not entirely secure as herself and going full tragedy mirror how she covers her insecurity with being extra energetic.

    • @falconinthedive
      @falconinthedive 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      And realistically there's probably even a space for a massive difference in how you act out of drag vs in drag. Like I think people could understand Laganja the queen having these extraordinary affectations while the person out of drag is way more lowkey. Maybe that switch just flipped for the cameras out of drag by the same vibe.

    So astute every time!! I will say I thought how HARD Utica fell in the roast and her closing remarks def gave me delusional, but it’s true she was given more nuance. It’s so interesting then in regards to Deya then-truly I feel like they make us feel empathetic to her (loving Crystal but wanting be seen) and then another moment/episode-mean and not budging, hoping this is a redemption for her and people TRULY need to chill lol

    Max is the one that upsets me most, because there's a step up in malicious intent between merely picking n choosing clips of filmed footage to create a delusional edit, and deliberately orchestrating an on set moment to trap someone into a delusional edit. There's not a chance Ru asked her to sing for any other reason than production knew they could use it to make her look nuts.

    • @aquariaaaa
      @aquariaaaa 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      right!! they even had other queens film confessionals where they commented about how weird max’s singing was, so that production could make max seem even more crazy and sell the story of that the edit is how the actual moment hapened
