2021 Gladiator Rubicon EcoDiesel Offroad

  • Finally got the chance to take the Gladiator offroad. As with the Wrangler Rubicon, the Gladiator Rubicon is really far to too capable to test to it's limits on my normal test hill.
    Engine Adventures strives to explore and test the AWD and 4WD systems of all crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks. To do this we test vehicles in real world environments in a way that allows viewers to cross shop and explore any vehicle they may be interested in learning about.
    New full videos every Saturday at 6:30 A.M. MST and occasionally on Wednesdays.

    I have the wrangler farout edition/diesel.
    I love my rig! Amazing power with 22mpg.

      Yup, this engine is great and a great fit for Jeep vehicles. Too bad they have very complicated emissions systems!

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I really like the diesel, but modern diesel emissions systems are a pain regardless of manufacturer. The 3.6 is a little underpowered for my liking, but still a good engine overall.

    Jeep Gladiator is like my dachshund off-road. Plenty of traction, just prone to dragging her belly lol

      @@jarrodmcdaniel got some new axles with trusses, 4.88 gears and lockers. 22-23 mpg on the freeway below 68mph
      And yes it’s virtually unstoppable in low locked in first gear no throttle required. Freaking love it

      My brother did Yukon axles with 5:13’s on his JK Rubicon 2 door. Has a 3.6 V6, but it pulls his 37’s just fine.

      Finally an engine that has enough torque to actually turn 35+ inch tires on the Gladiator.

    You can lock the rear locker in 2 high, also you needed to hit the downhill assist with the 4wd+, it works amazing. Look it up

      It seems that there are differences between JTR's. Some of them can lock the rear in 2wd but others can't. This one I'm pretty sure I tried, but wasn't able to. It has been a long time though. I have used the downhill assist, but I was checking the gearing. I prefer gearing to a finicky computer in most cases, but the downhill assist does work great on just about every vehicle I've tested it on. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    you weren't disconnected on the off camber from what it appears, it should flow right up those with the suspension unlocked so it can follow the couture of the ground, right? I know my rubicon jk just flows through things like that

      Not sure which spot specifically you are talking about, but I know for a lot of the climbs I left it connected to more effectively test the power transfer system. I believe I did each scenario with it connected and disconnected.

    Writing this review after 2yrs.. but now I'm considering buying one..but the 3.6 liter.. and yes weight will be a factor.. but probably not bymuch.. guess what I'm saying or asking everything you explained.. wonder if the gas version will provide better results, like high speed off road test, up hill climb..

      It probably makes a difference, but I don't know by how much. The Gladiator Mojave is only offered with the 3.6, and Jeep probably has a reason for that.

    Wife's JLU the top creaks and pops just going down the road, actually very annoyed by that due to her JKU didn't do it at all. So I guess since I'm looking at getting a rubi Gladiator i need to get used to it.

      The JLU I tested had the power folding soft top, so I didn't get any of that stuff. I also didn't get any of that in the JTU.

      @@EngineAdventures we've already had her top replaced under warranty due to.it was damaged and repaired somewhere between the factory and US purchasing it. I was mad that i.wasnt made aware of it till I noticed the top fading in color in a spot. Anyway, only mentioned it cause in your vid you mentioned the top creaking or a pop while off road. It's her freedom tops that are making all the noise(which werent replaced with the main top). Might be looking for something to smudge on the seals to stop it or use graphite powder.

    Weird that my power wagon allows 2wd locked rear and a Jeep doesn’t. It’s super handy instead of going onto 4hi.

      I wish Ram would send a Power Wagon or here, that's one of the few I haven't been able to test yet. I'm old school, let me do what I want and if I make a mistake it's my own fault. Let me lock the lockers in 2wd and disconnect the anti sway bar.

    Pretty sure if you are in Off-road plus in 4 Hi you can lock the rear diff.

      I don't think I tried that, but it appears from the forums that Jeep has or will make that feature available for the Rubicons. It wasn't that way for the 19 and 20 model years.

      @@EngineAdventures That is correct. In the 2020 Rubicon you cant lock rear locker in 4H unless you buy a Taser device. IN the 2021Rubicon you can if you hit the "off road plus' THEN you have to turn off the Electronic stability control and the rear locker will work in 4H

      Yeah, it's a good idea to spray down the undercarriage with wd40 before and wash the vehicle shortly after, keeps the mud from sticking, drying out, and causing corrosion.

    The only problem if this car is that The front/rear diff lock only engages in 4Low.

      Turns out you can engage the rear locker in 4 High when the Off Road + button is pushed. I do agree with you, Let me control what the vehicle does rather than have the computer tell me what I want to do.

      Name one situation where you “need” both lockers in 4 hi. The computer is just trying to save you from expensive repairs.

      The transmission is tuned better and shifts smoother in high than low range. The diesel also has great torque with a limited rev range. Running in 4 high has many benefits. Climbing a steep sandy hill or crossing a huge mud flat where hitch speed and great traction are needed. Also, in high range there will be less stress on the axles than there would be if it were in low range.

      agreed this should be available but I believe this can be done with a simple ecu flash but IDK for certain.

    Great review. I'd comment the diesel is heavier than the gas 3.6L. That's one negative for off-road capability of the diesel as lighter is better off-road but I understand high torque at low RPM has advantages.

      I'd love to test a Mojave! Actually in most cases I prefer gas engines to diesel for off-roading, for the lighter weight and higher rpm range (shifting gears less), but the wrangler/gladiator has lacked an engine with good torque, especially once people add a lift and tires. The Eco Diesel solves this, and I'm thinking the 4xe does as well, but I haven't tested one of those yet either.

      @@EngineAdventures Watched the video again. I'm still thinking a Mojave would serve my needs better in the South. I spend a lot of time on muddy, deeply rutted logging roads and think the Mojave would allow a smoother ride. I think the rear locker works in 4wd high. I would like a front locker but don't need a disconnecting sway bar. I will be keeping everything stock as it's mostly a work truck. I'm waiting for the 2022 model.

      I really need to drive a Mojave! I believe that it is the best choice for most people because of the better ride. The Rubicon is great for very slow speed crawling, but not so fun at higher speeds.

      @@EngineAdventures Okay thanks. I'm likely never going to be rock crawling but I'm not driving fast either. Logging roads are constantly changing from rain and flooding and heavy logging truck use. The constant pounding is hard on vehicles. (Your test roads look similar). A heavy duty like the new Silverado 2500 would be great for load capacity and roominess but they all seem to have a stiff ride. The only other truck that might work is the Ford Raptor but it's expensive for my use.
      The thing is I've never owned a Jeep and don't personally know anybody using a Gladiator as a work vehicle. I know nothing's guaranteed but would you trust one for daily use?

      I don't know of anyone driving rough roads every day for worl, but there are some people, like the story til now, that offroad theirs on a regular basis. Maybe check out his channel and message him.
