    Hey Jacky, I got my results today and I really wanna thank you for the bottom of my heart. It was only possible because of your videos that I was able to secure 7 in writing. Well, here are my results:
    Listening: 8.5
    Reading: 7
    Writing: 7
    Speaking: 7.5
    Though I'm disappointed with my Reading and Speaking, I guess I ain't gonna complain much. To be honest, I screwed up my speaking part 3 and that's the only reason I scored less than what I desired for. About Reading, even though I was confident about scoring 9, I reckon I messed it up with True False questions as it always have been my weak link.
    Planning to sit an exam again as I aim for 8 band in each module.
    I must also mention that its a real shame that you have so few subscribers considering an awful lot of detailed information available on this channel. You are a gem and your videos are incredible. Without your help, I wouldn't have rectified how to classify the Task 2 questions in writing. I guess that's the biggest challenge for many IELTS aspirants.
    With Love

    As a non-native English teacher, I've been preparing a student of mine for Ielts. The other day he asked me a question about the band descriptors for band 7; in particular, he wanted to know what those actually ask for, when they mention "grammatical range" (assuming he knew what accuracy is). My answer was quite simple: they expect you to use (without forcing)a variety of complex sentences. In other words each complex sentence has to be different from another. The example I gave him was the following:
    "Let's assume an essay consists of 12-13 sentences on average. Try to write 6-7 complex sentences (and two compound sentences) that have to be different one another. For example,.include a couple of different adverb clauses, one adjective clause, a conditional sentence, a relative clause, a cleft sentence and a noun clause to show variety (as long as you are able to master them)".
    Is this what the band descriptors for band 7 mean by "a variety of complex sentences"?

So my question is are we just allowed to take a point just as Sources of income and discuss few points from X numbers of option or do we need to give two ideas paragraph? You have mentioned in the video just want to be sure. Also, I really appreciate your videos.

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sanjo,
      I hope I have understood your question correctly.
      Most importantly, you must give a balanced answer. You will not have time to write a long essay and it is fine to just select one advantage and one disadvantage to write about. If you think you can manage it in the time allowed, choose two advantages and two disadvantages. Write roughly the same amount about each advantage/disadvantage you choose. I hope this helps.
      I'm glad that my videos are helping you.

    @IELTS Jacky, have a question. I am trying to simulate the structure which you mentioned about advantages and disadvantages, however, do we follow the same structure when it come to question which reads as "Do advantages outweigh the disadvantages?"
    Or do we need to present just the advantages or disadvantages whichever weighs more?
    For example, for the question which you mentioned in the video:
    Small businesses are disappearing and being replaced by large multinational companies.
    Do the advantages of this outweigh disadvantages.

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Anu,
      I recommend that you use the same structure, in fact, either of the two structure I cover in this lesson. In order to come to an opinion, you need to state both advantages and disadvantages so that you show that you have weighed up both sides of the argument.
      The question I use as an example in the lesson is partly of the type you are asking about so you can see how I answer it. The question is:
      What are the advantages and disadvantages of tourism in the modern world? Do you think that the benefits of tourism outweigh its drawbacks?
      Here is a link to the web page with the text version of this lesson in case you will find it easier to follow than the video lesson.

      Hi Anu,
      I’m sorry I didn’t reply to your last question about cause and effect essays. For some reason, TH-cam wouldn’t let me. The same thing happened with your question today but since you posted it on the same page as your very first question to me, I can now reply to both of them as a reply to this post.
      As this seems to be a recurring problem, please feel free to email in future if you have a question - jacky@ieltsjacky.com.
      The type of advantages- disadvantages question you’re talking about usually asks, “Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?” This is my recommended structure.
      1) Introduction
      • Paraphrase question
      • Opinion statement (state which one outweighs the other)
      • Outline sentence
      Main Body Paragraph 1 (Stronger Side)
      • Topic Sentence
      • Explain why it is strong
      • Example
      Main Body Paragraph 2 (Weaker Side)
      • Topic Sentence
      • Explain why it is not strong
      • Example
      Conclusion
      Summary of main points and restate opinion.
      Here’s a reminder of the cause and effect essay you asked me about earlier this month.
      “I want to know if we'd be asked about just the causes and not solutions to Problem- Solution essays? For Example, here is a sample question. I suppose they are only asking about the causes. More children in developed countries are becoming overweight. This is a serious problem for wealthy countries. Discuss some causes and effects of this problem. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. Are we supposed to include the solutions as well even though it isn't asked in the question?”
      A cause and effect essay is slightly different to a problem-solution essay. You don’t need to write about the solutions. With any question, only write about what the question specifically asks.
      I hope this is helpful.
      Cheers, Jacky

    So in the question where they just ask what are the advantages and disadvantages ?
    In that case do I need to give my opinion in the introduction statement or just in the final conclusion?
    and also how will the structure of the introduction be without an opinion?

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is common to get a question of this type where you don't need to give your opinion. You can still use the same structures I suggest but just leave out an opinion.

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Daman, thank you for your question.
      You don’t absolutely have to write about the advantages before the disadvantages but they always come first in the question so writing about them in this order follows the question structure and it generally gives the best flow of ideas. In any academic essay, you would normally write about positive points first followed by negative ones. My recommendation is to write about the advantages first. Most importantly, make sure that you answer the specific question being asked.
      I hope this is helpful. Jacky

It is impossible to give structures that will be ideal for every single question. An important element of the IELTS exam is to test the ability of students to use the English language in the most appropriate way in a given situation. I hope this is helpful.

    Hello, can I give my opinion for both types?

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on what the question asks you to do. Advantage and disadvantages questions often ask you to give arguments for both sides then state your opinion as to which side you believe outweighs the other. You can also be asked to discuss both sides without giving making a judgement between them. Be very careful when analysing the question.
      Watch my lesson on how to do this. You can go to the lesson on the website via the following link:

    Teacher, could I ask if it is possible to write only one advantage and one disadvantage rather than two? Will it affect my score?

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Here is the advice I give in the lesson:
      The question will state 'advantages' and 'disadvantages' in the plural, that is, more than one. However, it is acceptable to write about just one.
      This should give you an essay of just over the minimum 250 words. To write about two advantages and disadvantages will require you to write nearer 400 words which are a lot to plan and write in the 40 minutes allowed.
      It is better to fully develop one advantage and one disadvantage than ending up with your second idea missing an explanation or an example because you run out of time, but you can write about two if you feel able to or more comfortable doing so.
      Having said that, using essay structure 2, where you start with the examples, will enable you to easily add more than one advantage and disadvantage without having to write many more words.
      It will be more suitable for some questions than others so bear this in mind when you're writing practice essays and try out both structures.
      I hope this helps.

    Thank you so much for your effort. It was really helpful and I sincerely appreciate that. I also wrote it down some beneficial sentences and words.
    However, in my opinion -although I'm not a native speaker, and that's the reason why I'm here :)- this essay doesn't make sense in terms of consistency.
    I'll try to explain why I think this way.
    You think that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages but you don't emphasize that situation with strong sentences and examples which are far from comment.
    On the contrary, you have written the body 2 as if you undoubtedly think the disadvantages outweigh the advantages by increasing the power of this paragraph saying '' Not only ... but ''
    I'm sorry Jacky, but I don't think you are really a professional and this will be bad for especially low level of students who need some help.

    • @HeaveNinMyHandS
      @HeaveNinMyHandS 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, in the first paragraph;
      '' This essay will demonstrate how tourism can transform the economy of poor areas ''BUT WILL ALSO''
      Shouldn't you have written '' not only'' referring to the first sentence? I'm not sure of that but how can you say ''but will also'' without saying not only or something like that?

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you for your opinion and comments.
      This question does not ask the writer to argue more strongly for one side of the argument than the other. It requires them to give evidence for both sides of the issue and then state their own view. This has been done in both these model essays.
      Be careful that you don’t get confused between advantages and disadvantage essays and opinion essays.
      With regard to your second post, this sentence is fine.
      I wish you all the best with you continuing IELTS preparation.

    Mam, in advantages and disadvatages essay, it was asked 'why'? Which is not a usual question type.
    Question appeared in IDP IELTS, India on Sept 14 computer based test.
    Nowadays more people choose to move out of area where they grew up, in search for a better job. Do you think there are more advantages than disavdantages to this development? Why?
    what will be your take on such question.

    • @IELTSJacky
      @IELTSJacky  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Deepak,
      if this is the exact wording of the question, then it is asking why you have made the decision to either agree or disagree with the question. You are required to state why you think there are more advantages or why you think there are more disadvantages. You are right that it is an unusual question structure.

      Hi Елена. I'm glad you found the video helpful. I have many students who have achieved a high score for Writing Task 2 using both these essay structures. So, the simple answer is, yes, the structure you refer to is approved. All structures recommended by myself or any other teacher should be used for guidance but adapted to suit the specific question. It is impossible to provide a structure that will fit every possible essay question. My advice is to use the structure you feel most comfortable with. If you are not confident using a particular structure, you will not write a good essay. The structures I give in my lessons, although proven in real exams, or not the only possible ones. You might want to check out others but please don't make the mistake of searching for the perfect essay structure for any type of question. Pick one you can work with and practice using it (adapting if necessary) as much as you can. I hope this is helpful. Jacky

      Hi Sanhagi,
      Thank you for your comment. You are essentially correct in what you say. However, I have been told by an ex IELTS examiner that it is acceptable to write about just one.
      These are my recommendation from this lesson.
      Writing about one advantage and disadvantage should give you an essay of just over the minimum 250 words.
      Having said that, using essay structure 2 (I give you two model essay structures), where you start with the examples, will enable you to easily add more than one advantage and disadvantage without having to write many more words.
      It will be more suitable for some question than others so bear this in mind when you're writing practice essays and try out both structures.
      I hope this is helpful.
      Best regards,
      Jacky

      2.For outweigh question type, in the intro I mention about my view for e.g. advantages outweigh disadvantages, then in my main body paragraph 1, I tell the reader that there are some drawbacks and in my main body paragraph 2 I write about
      advantages by emphasizing it is stronger than the disadvantages, and lastly in the conclusive part again mention my view.Would that be a well developed and at the same time accurately structured essay?

      Hi Sümeyye,
      I’m glad you’re finding my lessons helpful.
      When writing an essay for a question that asks ‘to what extent do you agree or disagree…’ you should, as you say, just pick one side of the argument and develop this in the two main body paragraphs rather than trying to explain why the opposite side is unjustified.
      With regards to your second point, this looks like a sound essay structure for this type of question.
      I wish you all the best with your continuing IELTS preparation. Jacky
