This is a tutorial on how to overclock an AMD A6-3400m processor with K10stat.
Specs:
*Processor: AMD A6-3400M APU (Quad core; 1.9GHz with Turbo Core up to 2.8 GHz [overclocked])
*RAM: 4 GB
*Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6520G
*Gaming WEI: 6.5 (out of 7.9)
*Screen resolution: (Primary monitor: 1366x768) (Secondary monitor: 1024x768)
First off thanks for answering! (Not many people do anymore) And because of this great tutorial and quick response to comments, you gotten yourself a new subscriber! :)
I overclocked my laptop with k10stat ever since I got it last September. It was running pretty fine but I noticed I suffered from micro stuttering. So I searched proper overclocking vids online and found your video. I can't believe it but my WEI score went from 5.3 to 6.6 for Aero graphics and 6.1 to 6.6 for gaming graphics! Thank you!
You can also overclock the initiated graphics on the CPU if you use MSI Afterburner and set it to unofficial overclocking mode and select With Power Play Support and overclock it to 520MHz like mine or do over that just hit apply and restart afterburner and you can overclock it some more, but I suggest only keeping it at 520MHz (unless you have a death wish for your laptop)
@hailphire130 It does over clock automatically when you need it. However this is a feature that force over clocks everything. Just gives you more control over your CPU etc.
@bigfunkychik3n I've hooked up a separate monitor with a CPU reader to see the results. Almost every game I played showed that overclocked to 2.4-2.5 ghz automatically.
Here is a list of games:
Skyrim
Mass Effect
Resident Evil 5
Starcraft 2
@bigfunkychik3n You mean Turbo core. Turbo boost is a technology only on Intel processors. I have a AMD A6 3420M which is very similar. The CPU meter from the separate monitor showed that it jumped to 2.5 ghz automatically for each game I played... But if what you say is true! that means the CPU meter program I'm using is not accurate. I'm gonna try other CPU meters just to see for sure.
@Givyj13 I have not yet done battery life tests. Yes, you can change the profile when you need to do so, and the change is instant; no need for a restart.
This worked nicely. I was able to get 2.1ghz @ 1.125v and boost of 2.8ghz @ 1.362v max temp while gaming of 65c. This is a nice performance increase for my A6 3400m and its not really running any hotter than stock. I was able to go up to 2.6ghz and 3.1ghz boost stably and keep temps below 80c but backed it down for daily use. I also bought a A8 3520m on eBay I'll be upgrading to shortly and over clocking that for more performance.
would you mind sharing your all your states value of 2.1 to 2.8 please.

Sure, check out this link to Tek Syndicates site I have a post that shows all settings and results.

jmanturbo31 im getting decent dps/temperature with that settings. can you also post your kstat settings for higher oc (2.6 to 3.1). thanks
I was able to do 3.1ghz@1.362v. The 1.362v is the highest it would let me set my voltage. I have now replaced my a6-3400m with the a8-3520m I got on eBay for $15, very easy AMD uses a socket on there laptops the CPU is not soldered like most Intel's. I was only able to get the a8-3520m up to 2.8ghz@1.362v. Being that no two CPUs are the same most doing this will have to tinker with there overclock a bit to get there CPU stable. Upgrading to the a8 didn't get me much more CPU performance but did get me some better graphics performance.
Also the a8 idle temp is about the same as the a6 and the load temps are about 2-3c hotter which is no biggie.
thanks a TON man!
my games are now a lot smoother, a lot less stuttering. Gotham City Impostors is now lag free too and I am getting 3:1 KDR now. LOVE YOU!!!!
@laxer4life99 It returns to your normal clock settings when you restart or shut down. There are workaround if you Google it, though.
Well in MSI Afterburner if you have the new beta version (I think its Beta 7)
you go into settings and select "With Power Play Support" (its the last option to change in beta 7)
@h1n1viruz If you want to push the graphics, you should upgrade to 8GB of RAM. Since the A6-3400m is an APU, upgrading the RAM increases the memory shared with the graphics card, aka the 6520g. I'm planning on upgrading from 4 to 8GB of RAM soon. :D
followed your exact steps......no blue screens no over heat!!
@Givyj13 It all really depends on what model laptop you have. My toshiba stays very cool when I have it overclocked to 2.2 GHz normal and 2.8 GHz boost. If your laptop is cool in the first place, overclocking only heats it up a little bit, not much.
@bwporter312 It may be you power settings in Windows. Change your power plan to maximum performance or whatever in the Control Panel.
@LOLATYOU1 It all depends on your laptop; you may have to fine-tune it a bit. It's extremely stable for me.
Does this also overclock the graphics card? (I have an APU A6-3400 with radeon 6520g)
It will automatically adjust itself depending on how much your CPU is working. However, if you really want it at a certain speed: leave k10stat either minimized or open. Right-click the icon in your taskbar tray, to go lock p-state, and choose which one you want. Note that the speed will be locked at that until you unlock it.
The overclocking should work. However, the clock speeds and voltage need to be values that are for YOUR cpu. So Google around about overclocking your processor.
@MrWaffles224 have you checked CPU-Z? WEI doesn't update the rating immediately, you have to rerun the assessment.
@papatsitonas It goes back to the normal profile. There are workarounds if you so wish; use Google.
Ok, Thanks for the feedback anyways. I found out it is most likely a problem with the "Cool n Quiet" feature amd has. A restart does fix it for me but it usually comes back . Another question though, how do you get the overclock to stay after a restart or shutdown? I always find that when I boot back up my computer is on the default clock speeds. I have used K10STAT and Fusion Tweaker and this happens with both.
@bigfunkychik3n I mean with AMD's Turbo core technology it does it for you when its needed... It automatically goes from from base 1.6 ghz to 2.5 ghz immediately when I run a game or do something that requires a lot of processing power. Manual overclocking is unnecessary in my opinion.
When I was playing MW2 I noticed a constant 60 FPS (V-Sync turned off) but I think its mainly the placebo effect, but I will see with Planetside 2 because it just destroys this APU.
While the clock speeds and such may be able to be pushed a little more since the 3420M is a bit more powerful, the same basic process is carried out.
So, in short, yes.
@DragonKid562 You're very welcome. I also want to add that (for me) I can safely run P0 at 2200 MHz with a voltage of 1.1250, if you would like to overclock it a bit more. :)
@Bozacar Anything that requires heavy work from the CPU will be faster if you overclock. As for the i3, it'll probably be on par with it when you overclock. I'll run some benchmarks soon to test. :)
@PeterbiltEmzie its the same as 3400 but 1ghz higher so 1.5-2.4 where as 3400 is 1.4-2.4
Thanks bro. Did this to my a6-3400m 1.4GHZ quad core and my windows rating on my processor went from 6.5 to 6.8
@xtramodz4life Adding RAM does nothing to the processor; you improve the processor speed via OCing. BUT, upgrading your RAM on an APU like the A6-3400m is supposed to boost graphics performance.
Also, does battery life take a lot of a hit from this? Could I just change the the profile to the default profile 1 when I need more battery life? Do you have to restart the computer before it takes effect?
Works for cpu-intensive programs such as emulators, just did a test with Desmume DS emulator; the before and after are almost night and day. Thanks for the vid!
@Wafflez98 I can run fine at 3GHz.... so I don't know what's wrong. What is the exact model of your laptop? Have you heard of any overheating complaints?
@Bozacar Sadly, there is no way to overclock the GPU, so OCing the processor has no effect on most games.
Thank you so freaking much!!! It works man so far no problems, but settings change after reboot.
@mantticmax14 You will need to re-open K10stat to reapply the profile. Your profile gets saved, however.
Just restart. k10stat doesn't apply the clock change at startup.
Also, my CPU/GPU has hit over 90 degrees celcius and kept running. If you were playing a cpu-intensive game, 70 degrees is to be expected for a laptop.
@alronmendoza Its not gaming graphics, typo error.. its only graphics[Desktop performance for Windows Aero].. I only have Gaming graphics of 6.5, it will not change, it think.. or maybe it will if I increase RAM..
Hey nice vid, but what computer is this for?
@Givyj13 I get no heat at all. Then again, I do have my laptop propped up on two lego blocks for good ventilation, so that may help keep it cool. xD
@BobbyHobbyRC Well, will this work with an A8-3520M?
Also what kind of BSOD did you get with the wrong settings?
If I overclock this as you did, will I have to worry about my computer's heat? If so, how can I overclock is to be low enough not to worry about the heat? 1.4 and 2.3 is a bit too low for me. I'd like to have it higher, but not high enough where I would have to worry about my heat or buy a cooling pad or something.
@h1n1viruz I wouldn't overclock past 2.8GHz if you are gaming. 3.0GHz actually decreases gaming performance for me, with all the extra heat. I keep mine at 2.6GHz max, now.
@amjovi I have no idea. The only thing I can think of is you didn't apply the new profile. Sorry. :/
That's an amazingly low temperature for that clock speed, no worries!
hey, which do u think is better for the asus k53ta? a 7200 rpm hdd or a crucial m4 128 gb ssd?
I have an ASUS laptop with amd a6-3420 processor, and according the amd main page, my processor supports temperatures up to 100° c, but I dont rely a temperature from 90-100 could be a good deal as a result of overclocking. ¿which temperature interval you think is safe for overclocking?
Is it guarenteed that if I use your settings that I ill achieve the same results? Like will other processors have different results? Because from overclocking my droid 2, ive found out depending on the batch of processors made at the time, some can get up to 1.4ghz but somecan only do 1.2 or 1.3. (from a base of 1.0)
When you OC processor, does that have influence on GPU? Is GPU now faster in games?
Do you have to worry about heat at all? I'd like to overclock my HP g6, but I don't want my computer to ever overheat. And I don't want to have to use a cooling pad or extra fans when it's overclocked.
So I just played Planetside 2 and I noticed about 5 FPS change on all low settings, but still when you get out of the warp-gate and into the battle ground your FPS hits about 10, and for temperaters well I run on average about 60 C but I only say at max 62 C and it stayed at mainly 60 C, Going to overclock a little and find out how many frames more I get and at what temps.
Tell me the FPS you are getting because I loved Dead Island and I just overclocked it again to 620 MHz but that's all im doing I think 220 MHz more is enough for now (and the temps were only a few Celsius more like 2 or 3)
Thank you for this tutorial! It's great but now when I remove the software, any files from that, still my laptop overheats when I use it enough time. :( Have you got any ideas if it's possible to fix?
@bigfunkychik3n Aha, ok.. What is about compiling some C programs or doing some heavy processing task? Is it faster now?
And one more question. Is it now faster than stock i3 2310 at 2.1Ghz?
Thanks in advance. :)
Hi buddy,
I have a HP DV6 6170Br and I want to know if I can use your tutorial to Overclock my processor, I just asked you because is the first time that I will try do this and I was looking for some tutorial that I can just follow an get some results. In portuguese I just found some tutorial for A6-3420m and maybe is not safe use the same value for my A6-3400m so I really wanna try use your values to overclocking mine.
Thanks.
After practicing overclocking for nearly a year now with this APU, I wouldn't recommend going above 2.6 GHz because you're not going to get much of a performance increase, and it's pretty unstable.
i did this over on my a4 on call of duty 4 i got a 3 fps increase -_- bless you sir
Hey, can you make a tutorial on how to OC A6-3420m?
your cpu is normal at 1.9 or you do the oc and now have it ?
I'm thinking of upgrading my RAM (since GTA 4 needs a lot of memory). In my dxdiag it says I have 6144MB RAM and I have no experience upgrading RAM on my laptop. Model is a HP Pavilion G6. How much RAM should I buy (I don't want to exceed the maximum allowed for my laptop) and which brand do you recommend?
Hey, just bought a laptop with AMD Quad-Core A6-3400M Accelerated Processor(still shipping) I wanted to know if this will doing anything negative to the processor? btw the way the laptop is a dv6-1149wm,also upgrading the ram to 8gb
thx mate.. really nice tutorial.. now ive just got to pray i receive my dream laptop soon.. ^_^
Hi John, well, to be honest with you i don't know what OCed means.. i am sorry but english is not my first language..
also, i already overclocked my laptop as well, i do have the programs you request for on the following video, however, bf3 still does not work.(properly)
i was able to play BF3 when i altered my lap's BIOS, like a pirate BIOS made to play bf3.. i just dont get what is the problem... maybe 2 boards conflicting?
i did 3.0Ghz just now after your guiding video and stable!. I think it worked because of prayers.. xD
@alronmendoza Wow, I'll have to try it out for myself, then! :D What voltage did you use for the 3.Ghz boost?
how does the standard overclock work? it says something about automatically boosting when you need it (something like that). how does it tell when you need it? i've had a bit of trouble understanding
Do you keep your laptop on a flat surface and prop up the back end?
@gameveiwer It always opens to show profile 1. That doesn't mean it has Profile 1 applied.
I've never played PS2 but I tried the OC in Dead Island and it does seem to run better!
@alronmendoza I'm running 3GHz stable right now. However, I don't see how you can be telling the truth. It isn't possible to set the voltage to 1.3500.
Ok I have an AMD 1.4GHz Quad Core A6-3400M with TURBI CORE Technology up to 2.3 GHz can I overclock it like to 1.8 GHz, and what volatage should be good? PLEASE
@davidvu396 Not quite sure. I haven't done battery tests... :P But, whoah, if anything, this would be on par with the cheapest i5. It can beat out most i3s, though, and the ones that it doesn't beat, it is on par with.
I overclocked all cores to 2.8ghz and have them all at a voltage of 1.325 and i jumped from a WEI of 6.5 to 7.3 =]. The APU has remained extremely stable and when gaming with max loads the CPU temperature would be at a max of 75C
Honestly you should go for higher turbo clocks and keep the stock no higher than 2.1 or so ghz. Then you get the benefit of higher clocks when needed without the negatives. You can also set windows down to 50-60% cpu clock on battery so it doesn't stress the battery out.
Yes, you can OC the 6520G. However, there seems to be absolutely no performance improvement.
What about temperature, on normal spec the A6 goes at very high temperature when in use, what are yours with your setup
does overclocking damage anything? any chance of it crashing or something?
So if I just wanted to get my A6-3400M processor to only go up to 2.0 GHZ I can do this through K10stat? I don't need any more than that.
I have done everything you instructed but it won't let me change the voltage to 1.3375, the highest it lets me go is 1.3125. Any tips?
Could you provide the web address of the google site link that you cite at the beginning of the video? Tks.
Are there any risks ? I don't want to mess around with my laptop :D
you have to 'unlock' MSI Afterburner. I'm not really going to take the time to tell you how, because trust me when I say there is no performance improvement that comes from OCing the graphics card, but you can Google up on how to unlock Afterburner.
You most likely have a Trinity processor, and, sadly, there is currently no way to OC the Trinity serious (unless it's a k processor, which yours isn't).
how do you get your computer to keep it on the overclock profile you make. when i do it, it just puts it back to the normal profile
hi,
im having this same laptop
HP g6 a6 3400m
win 7 64 gb
6gbram
500gb hdd
how to use amd turbocore
my procesor speed is 1.4 ghz but how to use turbocore and get 2.3 ghz .. ?
Ola boa noite...não estou conseguindo fazer....ja tentei..fiz tudo igual..so que na primeira tela aonde aparece onde o seu aparece 1900 ou meu aparece so 1400
Thanks a lot! And thanks for the fast respond! Cheers!
Go for it. I'm currently running 2.4GHz with a voltage of 1.1125
@moNYTx I overclock when plugged in, then undervolt when I am running on battery. :D
ok real happy to hear tht..well i dnt get it as yet but i will soon...soo i want to kno frm now how i exactly n how it should be done..or if anytone can help me in doin this
@BobbyHobbyRC No problem! Yeah, the clock speed resets after a reboot, but there are workarounds. I don't want mine to change at boot, though, because that gives the chance of my laptop not being able to handle the overclock for some reason, causing me to be stuck in a boot loop. But that is just my paranoid self.. xD
Hey my computer seems like its 70 degrees celcius I dont think thats a good temperature to have so I want to stop overclocking. How do I turn of k10stat? Please reply ASAP.
My guess is yes, but will this work with my amd radeon HD 6250 graphics card?
does this also work with the 3420m or do i need different settings?
Hello John!
question: Do you play bf3 online? if you do, would you help me out? I have one HP pavilion dv6-6170 / AMD quad-core A6-3400, 4 gigas RAM blablabla... it was supposed to handle bf3 online but, somehow it keeps lagging everytime i meet some other player on the game.. i've tried loads of things and it keeps freezing so bad that i have to quit the match.. i already lowered my graphics, re-instaled the game, tried to update the graphic drivers and shit but STILL it does not work.
HELP!
Use the program CPU-Z (can be found via a Google search)
You can set P0 to FID 24 and DID 2 with a cpu voltage of 1.0750
if you don't see any improvement, whats the point of overclocking?
Just did two benchmarks, and it must have been a placebo effect b/c I"m only getting 1 fps better in Dead Island (avg framerate is 44 fps w/ settings mostly medium-high). Haven't checked any other games though.
When i did this, it worked fine and i got a boost but my windows rating didnt change, any ideas why?
