    I'm gearing up for my first engine rebuild , and of course it couldn't just be a chevy 350...I'm working on a '71 Travelall. Erik's videos on his rebuild are quite thorough and comprehensive. They're really helping me to fill in the blanks of my automotive knowledge and build up my confidence to tackle this project. Thanks Erik!

      Thanks! Just sharing my notes, I'm watching along my own video as I do the 392 on the stand ;) Not like we get the chance to work on these very often now a days, But yes that engine in the video is mostly stock just reworked the casting flaws and she will smoke all 4 and break them big tires loose in any gear at any speed with only 4.10 rear end, can rev higher with out oil starving....., at that point, you need to worry about putting the power you already got to the ground b4 we worry about hot rodding it !

      yeah what was it called, a transstar or a loasstar Studebaker, 60's, looks so cool, but ya know I think what people remember as rusty or falling apart, where the well built ones that where still on the road when the ones people choose to remember as the one to have, is cause it was in the crusher b4 it got to that point lol

  • @sphillips6357
    @sphillips6357 ปีที่แล้ว

    I acquired a Loadstar with only 15k original miles and always kept in a barn its whole life so there is no rust anywhere. It's only problem is the engine is locked up. I intended to start rebuilding its engine this year. Unfortunately I slipped on some ice last week and shattered my knee. So I sit here watching these awesome rebuild videos wondering if I will ever be well enough to walk again, finish and drive my truck.
    Actually I planned on converting it to 4 wheel drive. From eBay I got a rare 4-speed Dana/Spicer transfer case. I did a small write up on it in a couple of the forums as a lot of people never saw one and didn't know Dana/Spicer made a 4-speed transfer case for the Loadstar 1800. Ratios are very low; low; direct and overdrive. That gear box could be ordered with either of two different overdrive ratios. Surprisingly a heavy truck surplus parts place in Chicago had the alternate overdrive set of gears. Their computer said they were in stock but it took them over a week to find them. In the end they found a box of 66 NOS overdrive gear sets for this transfer case. They said it appears nobody ever ordered a set before. I'm probably the first and the last. Just thought I'd get the alternate overdrive gear set in case someday I got ambitious enough that I wanted to try a different overdrive ratio. They also had the parts to convert the front axle engagement from air shift to manual shift. Just thought I'd share . . .

I'm going getting the heads back this week from the machinist and then sticking her all back together! Also love the bit about setting up the timing!

    • @TEN-TIMES-HARDER
      @TEN-TIMES-HARDER  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, i will soon pull my heads, and deck them as well, its been over a couple years, I can smoke most things on the road as long as I pretend I let off at 60 to be responsible buahhhhhhh only thing I should have done was I had a questionable valve guide, and it took a couple years, but now its worn more and i get a tiny puff of oil on a hot day start up...

    • @tomcompoli
      @tomcompoli 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TEN-TIMES-HARDER Bill USN-1 on binderplanet.com has a good write up about the heads and adding umbrella seals to the valves rather than the simple o rings. It prevents the puff of smoke on start up usually caused by oil build up at the 7 and 8 valves. Sealed power umbrellas is what I bought for mine.

      What is the HP and Torque on it? Gas Mileage?

    • @TEN-TIMES-HARDER
      @TEN-TIMES-HARDER  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      well @@duanetucker one issue is even 60's Muscle cars only had 500cfm carbs, and I have a 600 , so I am drinking way too much gas,
      And depending if you can resist pushing the pedal past the mark that gets into the pointless power just because America power that can spin the clutch and all 4 wheels lol lol lol
      I would easily get 8-12 city and 14+ highway if I had a 470 truck avenger, the smallest new carb you can actually buy for a v8. Now I get 6-8 city and 8-11 highway,
      and seriously, to give you an Idea, the 470 is a huge upgrade from the stock 4bbls offered. 100 - 200 cfm larger depending...! with my foot to the floor i cant even give it 3/4 gas because my throttle pedal is bent, so Spinning all 4 and the clutch is like half throttle!
      a 600 cfm carb will not even open the rears until after about 3500 rpm, and our IH dont like to cruse past 4,000!. In fact theeir is very detailed instructions on how if your stuck you can give it all she got for like 8 seconds, let it idle for 8, floor it for 8 seconds idle for 12, floor it for 6 idle for a full min....... no joke, I can go a little higher rpm because i cleaned up the oil passages , but these engines where not designed for high rpm. most cars peak hp and torque on a large peak around 4 -6 thousand rpm.
      IH hp and torque has a fast steep early plateau. almost right off idle they are at full hp and torque and stay that way up to about 3500 rpm. so you actually get more power because its consistent !!! get it!!! the numbers can not be compared to other engines. these get the same gas millage empty or pulling 20 tons. no joke.

    • @TEN-TIMES-HARDER
      @TEN-TIMES-HARDER  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no I have not, but I ran that engine 5 yeara balls tonthe walls as a daily driver 80 all day crewzzzing passing at 100, and then metting the oil drain back to the pan lmao, so do th baja mod if you want to hold it over 80!
      as well you can ass slightly larger sb chevy springs, and watch david vizzard if you want to port further, the intakes are like race heads, the exhausts need work....
      the only thing i didnt di in the vids 1 & 2 was open the exhaust bowls and unshroud in the chambers....
      vid soon.....
      point is, that engine was mean as hell, I had all 4 off the ground twice, oncw in the highway lmao,
      could spin 31's in any gear 4:10 rear...
      more power than i could put down with out a cam even!
      truck was still running like new,
      guy git and ran me off the highway in a blizzard, barrel flip off the edge...
      just installed the sss terra roll bar and the cpt x brace / straight steer,
      crushed like a beer can aroumd the bar.... lap belts.....walked away.....
      so dont worry oil p...
      they took the lead out the gas and that kills pre 72 heads, and 96 they took the zink out the oil and that killed a lot of rebuilds!!!!
      and as well, the zink also fills the babbat in the cam crank amd rod bearings, as well as lubes under crush out... woo woo woo...
      run aukee purple, vr1, lucass hoteod, or additive and your gold...
      preassure fine!!

    Hey man, great videos. I've got a '71 Loadstar with the 345. Rebuilt the carb and did plugs,wires etc last year. Ran it last year but it still runs kinda rough. Needs to warm up before I attempt to move it. Hesitates, have to really nurse it with the throttle. Is there an after market carb youd reccomend? I run non-ethanol gas in it.

    • @TEN-TIMES-HARDER
      @TEN-TIMES-HARDER  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! A Holley 470 Truck Avenger! It’s the only new carb your gonna get even close! Stock on a load star was under 400 Holley! And Holley nor edelbrook sell anything less than 600 or 650. Except the truck avenger. See it has smaller Venturi’s for better or lower RPM range and these engines top out at about four grand! So the rear barrels on a carburetor any bigger than that truck avenger are barely opening up when the engine is screaming!!! Www.ironhammer.info/ihor

  • @johnb7889

    Question. Everything is an adventure at this point since this is my first 345 rebuild. I removed the #1 exhaust valve and everything looked pretty normal. The motor hasn’t actually been run for about 15 years and fuel has improved quite a bit since then so I was expecting carbon chunks. When I removed the intake valve I came across an unknown. The roto-washer thing. The book says to make sure it spins freely and doesn’t feel gritty. It passes that test. What I’m curious about is the squeaking sound in one direction. The other direction is quiet as can be. I’m guessing it’s fine but I’d like to be sure

    Question about fuel pumps. I have a half a dozen of new pumps laying around. Some have different length and different shape arms but the part numbers say they are for a 345. I figure it was because they’re different manufacturers? I really can’t find much searching it. What are your thoughts on this? Btw, great info on the engine!

    • @TEN-TIMES-HARDER
      @TEN-TIMES-HARDER  ปีที่แล้ว

      If they are used, can you see wear marks from the cam lobe on the arms, and are they in the same distance from the mounting surface... You can blue it if its new and turn it by hand and it will mark the spot.... I will check my pumps later, but off the top of my head yes they mades two size pumps, but no matter how the arm is bent, it still puts the force at the same vectors...

    • @TJ-qz6hr
      @TJ-qz6hr ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TEN-TIMES-HARDER They are all new pumps so there is no wear marks. They are made by Napa, Airtex and Delphi. The Delphi has the longer arm and a different shape. After putting them in a Vice and moving the arms by hand,It appears that each manufacture has different lengths of travel to pump the fuel. Some require more travel, some require less travel.

      these are the holley square bore, they came in the 392, mostly in loadstars. the thing was, a lot of dealers swapped the load star manifold onto a scout, and sold the loadstar as a 2bbl.
      now all 79 and 80 scouts had the spread bore thermoquad manifold, to improve gas milage, for emissions, so their out there, my buddy just sold his last 3, I got one of them for my metro...,
      now that i think of it, depends who is closer to you for shipping, but here is a vendor list, sss has them, ihpa has them, bcb has them...
