    I have always love these red engines. The sound and the way they work! Good old school engines. I miss my 1978 Scout II

    I really enjoyed your videos I’m 62 the first engine I rebuilt was a 345 IH me and a buddy 18 years old brings back great memories 👍

    Nice. So many memories growing up in a club cab IH pickup 4x4 with a 345 and a five speed tranny. First stick shift truck I drove. That low rpm thunder that no other 5,7 liter gas engine makes. They were built for work. Not for play.

      All that low end torque had to make it a little easier for a learner. The first thing you always do is dump the clutch without giving enough gas and you kill the engine. It is hard to kill an IH 345 that way because it just walks ahead without complaint.

    On the custom radiator hoses… have an exhaust shop make the funky bends with exhaust tubing, then flare to the larger size, then it is just 2 shorty hoses needed!! I did same on a Scout rad to a Mopar 318!!

    I am just learning about these engines. I have been interested in I-H tractors for many years, but I never thought much about their trucks. This thing looks and sounds like a serious piece.

      The IH SV engines are designed to run low RPM with lots of torque. They were used in Scouts, pickups, Travelalls, Loadstar and Cargostar trucks, school busses and even some combines. It's really a great engine.

    My first truck is a 1973 international truck with a 345, I'm 19 and have never worked on a vehicle before so this video is super helpful, going to make another attempt at getting the truck to run very soon

    Sounds so great even if it needs work. Restoring a 68 Loadstar and the engine is decent, I'm stuck on brakes and finishing custom bed. But this gives me hope that the ridiculous 500 plus dollar headers might be worth it, even if just for sound. Thank you

      Sounds like a great project! Are you planning on a flat bed or a pickup bed? A pickup bed on a Loadstar would be cool.

      @@TheToolmanTim it actually came with an 8 foot Chevy bed from the 90s and a single rear wheels. I bought a 70s Chevy stepside bed, but both were too small because I had to restore it to the appropriate dually. So I sold the stepside and, thank God, bought the lumber last fall for a custom flatbed. 6 -4x6 beams going across the steel frame for the bed frame AND 15 of the 4 x 6 beams, going front to rear for the deck boards as well. It's going to be insane.

    Just came across a few, my buddy got the 345 and I’m going to pick up the 392 at some point soon, there’s also a 478 the guy thinks I should take but that’s a whole lot of motor and I have no idea what I’d put it in haha, yours looks great though!

    My uncle just gave me a 345 to rebuild it's gone in my 87 ranger

      Are you serious? That will call for some beefier front springs for sure. The 345 weighs in at over 700lbs which is probably double what the Ranger had in it from the factory. You will have a very cool swap when you're done.

      Why your going to kill the front end and there pretty rare motors that make insane tourqe I would atleast put it in a full size truck or even better and ih scout or truck

    Smart that they put the distributer in the front. In the days of breaker points it would have made it much easier to tune than a Chevy.

    OMG the pre-oil procedure,.....almost like its something people just dont consider any more! I ripped a shaft out of a shit distributor to do teh pre oil after every winter on my Chevelle....have to get that oil moving!

      You can get away without it on lots of different engines, but these IH V8s are particularly prone to cam failure. Most IH guys will harp on the requirement for pre-oiling. I guess a lot of fellers don't want to pull the distributor and possibly have to deal with re-timing the engine.

    Great video. I have a question when you said you “marked where the #8 cylinder was on the distributor” is that based on top dead compression stroke and just facing distributor forward? Currently working on 1978 Scout II with 304

      Yes, that is correct. I put the engine on TDC for #8 and marked the distributor before I pulled it out. I did this ahead of time because I needed to rotate the engine as part of my pre-oil process. Everything is the same with your 304. Good luck with your project!

      Very good point. Anyone new to IH would be surprised to learn it is not cylinder 1.

      I had to rethink a AMC 258 3 times why it was a near miss on inline 6 after dealing with an IH V8 12 years ago to realize the timing wasn't off of number 1 rather the 8, now the engine cycles 120*. I have two hours to say crankshaft, distributor shaft +/- 2* (10? What) degree wheel? Near miss on three cylinders? Are they the forward half or back half? What, What? I can now compression test and know the cylinder because I have a pressure gauge. I have three 2 hour instances whether that thing fired right up or back fired, at 7pm, people want to sleep. I don't know what a customer does. I just have knowledge that if you field test anything, no one believes ACE of BASS is the same as the CURE. No one in left field said. America has SAE in it's bullpen anymore? Shit. The best does.

      Yes, it is. Good eye. I got it for my birthday when I was 10 or 11. It still works, but shoots so weakly that I can see the BB come out and drop to the ground about 30 feet away.

      You first have to determine which distributor you have. International used Holley, ACDelco and Prestolite distributors in this engine.     Nice 345 ! Bought a 66 1300 a single tire 4x4 best part came with a 392 w 4 barrel any experience with 2 vs 4 barrel 392 v mpg 488 gears 1 ton no option on higher gears

      Thanks. I have zero background on the 392. My first IH pickup was a 60 B100 with a 266 and then this one with the 345. I have 4:09 gears and MPG is not good, but I don't daily drive mine. I've heard a lot of good things about the 392 and people say it's mpg can better under a heavy load than a 304 doing the same.

I do not kno what 2 say but from 266 304 345 i believe 304 spins best gud tq and gre8 mpg 15 w holly 2 barrel on 1300d 4x4 but my thot on 392 crappy mpg not enough radiator in 3/4 ton so overheat especially w auto dont like rpms 3800 max and so cant grun 4 tq at lo rpm but not great cooling cant rpm them or they fall appart 4400 rpm

    How do I do the points? The black wire that runs into the destributor, where does it hook up to? I bought an 72 loadstar 1600 with a 345 in it. Needed to install a new distributor but couldn't find one with points in it.

      The wire from your distributor goes to the negative terminal on your coil.

      Hey Shawn. I may not have answered the question you were asking. Inside the distributor, the back wire should go to the terminal on the points. You should also have a condenser connected to that same terminal on the points.
