    To all the people bitching about the breathing noises...Lighten the hell up please. The man does beautiful work, and unless you live your life with a respirator strapped to your face, you don't understand how dangerous BREATHING PARTICULATE MATTER from sanding, welding and machining processes can be. God forbid you have allergies etc. Give the dude a break.. Rant off.

      Pretty much hit every main point.
      On newer videos there's a new respirator and I breathe much better, I just have shitty lungs and I'm out of breath if I go up the stairs too fast.

    Well done and a very nice result. I like the idea of re-purposing the knife with the more elegant antler and wood. Antler is tricky. It has its own lines and curves. You've got to work it just right with the wood to make the lines of everything flow. A great project. I'm gonna try it.

      Antler is a pain because making wood mate with Antler creates a huge room error.

    This is beautiful! It helped me answer questions on how to join wood and antler together. Although, I think I'll try to do this without the canvas first. I'm not sure if you might now, but, I'm wondering if you have recommendations on how to repair a drilled hole that went too far in an antler? I'm making a tobacco pipe and accidentally drilled too far for the bowl piece! If a repair is possible, the materials would need to be fire resistant and safe for smoking... still searching for possibilities. No problem if you don't have a comment on that. Thank you for this video, nonetheless! Love it.

    Nice work.. but I think that all the stuff that you put at the front of the antler takes valuable space for the tang to be effective and making it a “safer” knife to use. Beautiful show piece though 👍

      I tend to avoid using Metal on many knives. I mostly use woods, since a lot of metal is expensive and it's hard to machine.
      making a Bass Guard and a Corresponding Slot to fit the blade becomes harder on the whole process of making the knife.
      Putting Metal on a stacked handle also means you need to have a very clean belt on the grinder because if not, the heat could burn the epoxy (remember epoxy works with a thermal reaction)
      Feel free to ask more questions!

      F-Knives: Custom Blades And Handles just keep the knife cool with water and recess the tang so it’s square, ez-pz better to have a brass guard than leave end grain open, also you should probably clamp those segments together a bit tighter

      Whatever you really fancy. For me to use antler or anything I need to have the PERFECT antler. Its also what you feel comfortable with. Personally, antler is just drilling a hole and shaping the bolster, wood is sculpting out the whole thing.

    Next one of them knives you do take a piece of copper pipe and flatten it out bring it back to soft with heat slot for the tang and make a bolster for it texture the face with a small ball peen and scuff it out with 900 grit and 000 steel wool . nice work

    • @LUCKYB.
      @LUCKYB. 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yes it does but that is the thing about copper it is old world and still has its appeal . brass is nice so is silver and 304 stainless but copper is easy when it comes to knife maintenance . simple 3 ott steel . many carry steel wool in their tinder box or bag
      9 volt battery and their is a Copper enamel paint as well that can be used for tint with epoxy and will hide the epoxy that fills the bolster hole as long as its not a crater . cleans up great with a razor . and the good part is you can use old plumbing pipe and make flat spacers and mix them with silver or thin sheets of stainless or even brass .. trust me people dig it and it works . i stopped using brass pins long time ago and went copper now since my ex and i busted up i am going to be away from the knife industry for a few years till i get my new shop .. look up custom knives of D.Shipley . in google images .. their are many out their .. again you do good work
      and always willing to help with a pointer when i can meaning no harm we never stop learning right .. Blessings

      LuckyB I love the color od tarnished copper... if the valde is carbon you get to (or have to) keep it clean anyway. So a little copper is not much more work, if keeping up knives is work... I can amke a good case for play unless it is a discussion about chores... then I claim sharpening and cleaning the kitchen knives over most chores.

    Cross cutting against the fence is a no, no as is holding parts with your hands while drilling. Their are safer ways to use these tools.

    • @FKnivesCustomBladesAndHandles
      @FKnivesCustomBladesAndHandles  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kuma San
      While the hands part is true,
      Cross cutting isn't really a no no for such a small amount of material.
      It involves larger pieces like a 2x4 if you will. That's only because it's hard to maintain the 90° angle and it might skew, making the blade bend and producing a kickback or completely destroying the piece of wood.
      As for the wood while holding it, it also depends on the hardness of the wood and if there is a pilot hole or not, there is many instances when the bit catches the wood and spins it around. I do need a vice.
      Thank you for watching:)

    • @FKnivesCustomBladesAndHandles
      @FKnivesCustomBladesAndHandles  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never had a knife with one, but it does add quite a bit more extra in the process.
      but I'm sure it could be done.
      I actually try to make these the most economical as possible.
      That's why some knives are much more pricy than others, just reflects on the amount of work and materials.

    • @FKnivesCustomBladesAndHandles
      @FKnivesCustomBladesAndHandles  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not at all!
      I try to keep it simple so just plain oil helps, it won't chip or damage over time.
      In some handles we use Wood Hardener and that creates a Gorgeous gloss compared to oil.
      Just using what's around you know?
      Poly Coatings would work like a dream though.

    Hey I have a question the fabric between each pieces of wood and the horn are they necessary or are they just for Aesthetics?

      Dustin GraveRose
      I like it
      it cushions the pieces because cuts can't always be 100% square, it gives room to fill

      But what I'm asking is if I don't put the fabric between the pieces of wood or horn will the structure of my knife handle still be strong I just want to know if the fabric pieces are to make it look good or they actually help hold the handle together that's all

      Dustin GraveRose the fibre he uses inbetween the wood and antler provide like a buffer zone so that the materials join neatly together. you could say it's just for aesthetics but I believe having a nice tight fit and having no "play" in the handle will make it last much longer. either way you can make a knife with or with out the spacers

      You're going to have to find out through some trial and error.
      But I will say that 1/4" drill bits are a man's best friend when it comes to a lot of this work haha.

      I get this question asked often haha.
      It's oil.
      Plain Jane Canola oil.
      It not only brings out the subtle features of the wood grain but also protects the Carbon blade.
      Make sure to check out the other videos!
      We also have a page on Facebook, it's called F-Knives Custom Knives and Handles.

    The gap where the top of the blade meets the handle really bothers me...otherwise really great work
