Mora Knife Blade with Oak and Resin Handle

  • The handle is made of gnarly and cracked oak, burnt edges and clear resin filling. Blade is a No 2/0 Carbon Mora (Made in Sweden).
I had one design when I started making this handle, but the oak wood and cracks led me on another path. I think it turned out pretty nice.
I made the handle to fit my hands and grip. The handle is round so it can be used during a longer period of time. This knife is made to carve, cut and whittle (en slöjdkniv). I just made another design for it rather than the classic round handle. I added a metal (aluminum) plate as bolster for the contrast.
I was really surprised by the high quality of this blade. My first knife as a kid, was a Mora knife (a Classic 1) and I had it for years.
If I would do this again, I would get a longer drill bit from start and mount the blade before the resin pour. Drilling trough resin was not my favourite task.

What a great project Daniel! I really like the nail idea and also that you used a piece of wood with character. And thanks, as always, for free publicity!! You’ve got to be the nicest TH-camr on here.

When we saw that handle start to take shape, we both said 'Wow, beautiful!'. Love the burnt edges too, it came out great, another fine job, brother! Thanks for the sticker shot on the bandsaw! 👍👍

I have a Mora #2? It has such a poor wood handle in comparison. No solid grip. No protection. You did a fine job. Now I know what I gotta do!!!

How hard is the epoxy? Can you baton a little bit with that knife without it braking? Im asking becuse i would like to put a knife blade in a curly birch handle just like you have done.

i find it cheaper to buy the knives with a plastic handle than a blank and cut it off on the bandsaw and you also get a scabbard thrown in some sites have great offers on multi buys

Hey! Thanks for watching and commenting! Great tip! Yeah, some cheaper knife blades is great to buy in a bundle or reuse a blade from a "donor knife". 👍

Great looking knife and a great save with otherwise "worthless" wood. I personally love gnarly wood. I like the character it brings to a piece.

    • @dekeros-recreationalwoodwo6456

Warm thanks my friend! Mora is a place in Sweden with a lot of history. Among other things they are pretty known for making quality knives (the company with the same name). Everything from ordinary carpenter knives to carving, hunting, bush crafting knives. This type of blade I used here is a carving knife blade. Next time I will probably do a hunting knife and a carving knife with laminated steel blade from Mora. :-) Thanks for watching and commenting - You how much I appreciate it! :-)
