Great video. Thanks for sharing your process. ***WARNING***This process will take a while so do not be in a hurry. Wear gloves and have plenty of paper towels, Q-tips, a toothbrush (somebody elses, not yours) alcohol, and water handy. A small container for soaking and cleaning parts and a jar or something to put screws and stuff in are helpful too. I take stuff apart all the time and it took me a few hours to complete every step in the video. The process, as described in the video, worked for me. I took all tubes off, except the black 4 tube array (a black ribbon like set of tubes grouped together, which look different than the loose tubes) connected to the heads. My black ink wasn't printing at all, so I pulled all of the tubes and cleaned them with water until they ran clear. The other colors were printing fine from the beginning, but I wanted to clean all of them while I had everything apart. I found that soaking each tube in warm water then squeezing out the old ink worked well. It took a while to get all of the dried black ink out, but I finally did get the tube completely cleared out. I guess you could push something into the tube to get it cleaned out quickly, but you might damage the tube so I wouldn't do that. When you get to the part where you open the pump, you will release the clip that holds the housing together, as described in the video. Before you take the tube out and unwind it, PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO HOW THE TUBE IS CLIPPED AND HOW IT IS WRAPPED AROUND THE ROLLER INSIDE THE PUMP CHAMBER. Pictures work, but you can also sketch out a little drawing so that it is clearer and more detailed. Doesn't seem like it's a big deal, but it is. You will need to wrap it back the same way for your printer to work properly. I'm guessing the little roller spins and pushes the ink through the tube by squeezing it through the tube as it spins around. Good luck!!
Just wanted to add another confirmation that this is a good solution for the problem. Like others in the comments I went through 70 dollars of ink trying to clean and fix it with other methods. I had to take it apart all the way to the pump and remove all the black ink hoses and clean them out. Assembly was not that difficult, and everything worked on first try. Thank you very much Marcel!
Thank you so much for this video! I used this video 2 and a half years ago and it worked great, the printer was printing perfectly again. Now 2 and a half years later i had the same problem with the printer and I used your video again and again my printer is printing perfectly. You did an excellent job with your video and instructions and I thank you very much for what you have given all of us on You Tube!!
Thanks Marcel. There are a lot of videos about cleaning the print heads with lots of people saying their printers still didn't work afterwards. Your video shows the real problem and solution. It took a lot of work to get the tubes clear but it's all working now. Thanks again.
Merci beaucoup, mon ami, Makes a lot of sense. When I used a light to look in the waste well below where the printhead carrier parks itself I was shocked. I saw what the accumulated waste ink becomes, I tried tweezing pieces, yes, semi-solid pieces, out of the well just to be sure. Thickened, dried ink in soft chunks - doubt if it can be effectively removed. If any of that is in a pump or a feed tube no flow is likely possible. This is all happening to a recently purchased USED item from an eBay vendor. I already solved a detached printhead carrier problem myself but I think this thing is headed for a return. Otherwise, you make a masterful video with little talk, clear documentation. accurate diagnosis, deft procedure, and careful editing.
Brilliant. Bang on with the problem. I did disconnect everything, gave it all a good clean and flushed all tubing. Once everything was dry dry I reassembled it. Connected the mains and after the printer had finished setting itself up it worked first time. Many thanks.
Your video saved me from buying a new printer (which is great because I have 2 full sets of unused in ink). You saved me so much money--thank you, thank you. Your video is the only one I found that went beyond the "Soaking the ink cartridge in water" trick. I tried that first and it didn't work. So thank goodness I found your video which told about the clogged black ink in pump tube. Well, that was the problem. We flushed it out with a cooking syringe I had and out came a pieces of gelatinous worm. We ran it through the head cleaning option which made the ink flow through the tube again and voila--it works. Before we found your video we also tried the "running the heads under tap water" trick. That didn't work either and also caused the printer to give us a print head error. We took it apart again with the aid of your video and then worked on the pump tube. This turned out great for us because the extended warranty just expired--of course. Thanks again!
I would like to thank you for creating this video it is very complete. However it is well beyond what should be considered acceptable for a "normal" person. This makes me very clear that HP will not be the next printer i purchase!
I do not even know how to thank you, I spent 3 hours surfing around net to find a proper tutorial how to do it. Yeah, I could bring the printer to the service and pay ca 50 $, insread 20 min and my printer fixed. You are absolutelly great, your tutorial is detailed , properly showing every detail , so it is as easy as apllying lipstick !
Thanks for the tutorial. I tried on our 6510 but broke one of the axes of the gears so that the carriage is not correctly coming back in place. Today I successfully repeated this operation with a 5510 und fixed it (black ink transparent tube and right black tube were obstructed) , but did it without removing carriage nor gears, but disassembled the pump in place to get the tube out. Less risky. Thanks again for the great video and instructions!
Thanks for the video. It has saved my printer! The pipe for black ink was totally blocked with thick black goo. Once washed out with a syringe I switched back on and got printer carriage error. I then realised I had got my very inky finger prints on the optic sensor strip ( the clear plastic strip parallel to the drive belt that runs across the width of printer). Once I wiped the ink off it now prints superb. Many thanks.
This video is great and I can't believe how wonderfully thorough it is. This has saved me from replacing my printer twice now. Next time I probably won't buy an inkjet since they do this when not used very often but for now I'll spend my laser printer money on something else. Thanks so much for posting this!
Video helped a lot. My hands are all black but the printer prints black again. Had to clean out all the black and clear tubes associated with black ink including the plastic connector tubes on the reservoir under the little pad that comes out and stuck a pin through it(the reservoir tray is on a spring loaded mechanism that slides up and down, back and forth, and back to front so be careful to see how all parts are attached if you take this out) , cleaned the white plastic bracket that all the rubber tubes connect to with a pin as well, took the pump apart and left the left side guts in the pump housing which are associated with colored ink, the right side I took the tubes out making sure to see how clear tube is wrapped around shaft.I did all of the above because cleaning the printer heads did not fix problem at first, even though they definitely needed cleaning. Crazy amount of work, and crazy this is how printers and everything else these days are designed with points of failure that most people would throw it out and buy a new one every 2-3 years. This is not sustainable to have to throw out a perfectly good printer because the tubes clog up and most people can't and should not have to deal with.
That's so true... I hate it to throw something away because only one silly part is failing it's job. Design nowadays is not as good as it used to be...
you are a genius! its not just about saving money, I hate this attitude that you're meant to bin it and buy another one. One printer saved from the scrap heap.Well done good video.
After looking online and trying many fixes without success, I stunble into this video, great job, I was able to fix my HP 6520 and it is working perfect, the repair is very challenging, one of the tubes was clog, I went as far as disassembly the pump unit. Perfect Thank you.
Thankyou for this video, it saved my printer. I was not too keen to pull the pump apart so I applied the syringe to the little nozzle on the head clean base a couple of times and it worked - printer now printing perfectly.
A Million Thanks to you, Marcel! This is one of the best videos I have seen. I really appreciated how you pointed to the screws that needed to be removed as there are others nearby that one could get confused with. My printer is the 6520 and the instructions on your video were perfectly done! Thanks to you my printer is again printing great!
After weeks of no black ink printing and using up almost all of my color ink doing test page and alignments, after many searches of the same how to's. I found your video, I will try the factory reset first if that doesn't work then I'll dismantle and check the pump. thank you!!!!
Hello Marcel Reinieren. The instructions in your video are very clear. Saddly i had to clean the tubes. I get also the "wagon below". after a cleaning with hot water and syringe i was able to get rid of the black paint in the tubes. Import to clean also in the printer at the end of the tubes. After cleaning with hot water dry with a hair-dryer. Thanks for the great video
Thank you!You helped me a lot with this video! The black ink was almost solid in tubes,I used isopropyl alcohol in a seringe to disolve it.Have a good day! :)
Fantastic! Thank you. I didn't have blocked tubes, but I think a mouse had chewed a hole in one of the tubes. Luckily very near the end of the tube, so I had just enough slack to repair. Saved me a trip to the repair shop.
Just wanted to add that it is amazing that you have over 4500 views now (10-5-2016) and only a 11 likes. I don't use my printer often so the ink has more chance of gunking up. I think many people have this problem but perhaps think a few presses of a button will resolve the issue. I think it's well worth the effort of your diagnosis and fix, especially after you spent so much effort documenting the steps. Thanks again.
Thanks for the video it really helped me to fix my printer To me was little bit different though one of the black tubes coming out of two cups was clogged wit dry ink, it was difficult to get it unclogged but i managed to do it and after the restart the printer was able to align the cartridges and now is working perfectly Thank you one more time
Thank you for this video. If it were not for this video the HP6520 would be going in the trash. Had cleaned and replaced the print head but still no luck. Followed your video and now it works great. Did have to clean the printhead twice before error would clear.
Thanks so much for your work and sharing this. It's still lots of work to do the fix, at least for the first time, but you were absolutely correct in my problem. All gunked in the transparent and the black tube. I used 91 % isopropyl alcohol with a syringe to pump out the gunk.I have an hp 6515 which was identical as I can see in all your steps. I really recommend re-title your header for 6515 also - there are so many queries on google for exactly this problem with no resolve.thanks so much...barry paul
Muchas gracias desde Colombia y España! Este video ha sido sumamente útil para mí. Felicitaciones por tan buen material. Thank you very much from Colombia and Spain! This video has been extremely useful for me. Congratulations on such good material.
Thank you very much - this just saved the life of my printer - it was about to go into the bin....! Very good tutorial (just missed a bit from the actual tube cleaning).
Thanks for this mate. Took me 4 hours but I managed to get my printer to print black ink again after 3 months of not working. I had to remove the clear tube for the black ink from the pump (after carefully taking the pump apart) and clearing the black sludge from the pipe took an hour. Another piece of kit that you'll need apart from the life saving syringe is a length of nylon fishing wire thick enough to be stable and not bend, but thin enough to be able to clear this thin tube out. Wish I'd thought of it sooner. Can't believe it's working again and I've saved £100 not getting a new one :-). Cheers
Hi, I love this video, as I could see that I had a clogged tube, but didn't know how to get to it. My problem is...while disassembling early on, one of my transparent tubes (the one with black ink) wasn't connected to anything. This could have been operator error while I was disassembling, however, I cannot seem to find out where it goes. It is the tubing on the right that comes out of the top of the pump. Any ideas on where it needs to be connected? I tried to find a shot in the video that might help me, but I'm not seeing the angle I need. Thanks!
The video was very helpful. I see there is black ink inside the clear tube that circles around inside the round black piece. Did not want to take apart as did not know how. Also I have one tube going into right tray and no tube going into left tray. I think the one on the far right (longest) is the air tube as I blow in it the left tray bubbles up. I do not know if the clogged issue is resolved because the printer lights won't come on. The little white connector with the red wiring may be on wrong or tines bent? It was hard to get off and on in that tiny space. No video on how to put it back on. No video on how to take tubing off further and put it back on. Any ideas on lights?
This is a great video and I tried very hard to fix my printer, but my flat tubes group was badly clogged and even as i tried to reassemble the printer I damaged the electronics. The printer never came back on. So my hands are full of ink for nothing. Very frustrating.
Thank you very much, Marcel, for all your hard work, and posting this invaluable information. This has allowwd me to finally get my HP Photosmart 5510 back into service. It has exactly the same mechanism as your 6510. I understand other HP printers also share the same ink transport mechanism. Thank you for the video I did exactly as you showed in the video but I am trying to figure out how to reconnect the ink supply tube. I can almost see how the ink supply tubes are placed to the right but one of the 2 transparent/clear ones became undone and I can not figure out where it connects or drains to. This one holds the black ink and I am afraid it will leak out everywhere if I don't connect it properly. Any thoughts?
Hi. I have follow you procedure very carefully. I really admire you're detailed work. The reason I began to follow your guide is that my printer wouldn't print black. But now after I have cleaned all tubes with water (admittedly cold water, i forgot to use warm water) it still won't print black. The printer works fine, color works fine. But still no black is being printed. I have also cleaned the print heads and everything. I have done the procedure twice and cleaned the tubes (pumping water in them with the syringe. I have tested if the containers are being emptied when rolling on the gear. But only the left container is emptied. The right container doesnt get emptied. How come? I have cleaned everything! Is it maybe the pump that doesnt work? What can this be? Have I done it incorrectly? Hope you have an idea :) THANKS
A few years back this happened also, with no black printing. But suddently one day it did print black again! .. Can I be lucky that it some day just starts printing black again? Or what can i do? THe strange thing is... WHen i do a print of "printer quality report" the brackets around the amount of color left in the cartridges is being printed (black). but nothing else can be printed black. Isn't that strange?
i tried this and mine were clogged but now when i put it all back together i get a error saying i have a paper jam but no paper is jammed. any suggestions?
Hello, it's me again. I have another question. When you check to see if the black tubes are clogged, do you use water? or are the black tubes the air system? and where to you disconnect to unclog them? I didn't do this the first time and unfortunately unclogging the transparent tubes didn't fix my issue. Thank you!
Veronica Lopez I had one black tube clogged. I cleaned it without removal, water pushed the dirt out(with syringe). there's 4 tubes, 2 for air, 1 for black ink, 1 for color ink. try to follow them.
Hi dean, I think I deleted your latest reply unintentionally. However, I wanted to hide it. You MUST understand that I had a lot of work for making this video, especially because I took my parents' printer apart TWICE for it. My parents are printing without any problem since then, and even exchanged their black cartridge again. The way you wrote your comment, it looks like you think I've skipped something intentionally, which is NOT. So maybe it's a better idea to get in touch, and send me some pictures of your findings, so I can write a better explanation. It can even happen that the design of an EU printer differs slightly from a USA printer.
Because you were suggesting that I intended to left out an important part, trying to ruin people's printer. I did my best to help people. Your comment was not just "informational". My parents printer is printing fine for a long time now, so my suggestion is that there there's a modification on this part, maybe a difference between EU and USA 6510 printers. I decided to not closing the comment section, but keep myself the right to hide comments which I find not appropriate. Your tip about the longer axis in your printer is however a good one, so I wrote about it in the video description. (Like I wrote you in an email)
Hi! Thank you for sharing this video! I have just one problem now: I didn`t make a photo of the tubes before removing them and now I'm not sure if I mounted them right. I can't find any photos in the internet too... may somebody can help me?
I got the pump working and put the printer back together after taking out and cleaning the print head. when it starts the carriage goes hard right and then I get the carriage jam error. I don't know what I did but something is not right. Any ideas
a plastic strip should be in place (in correct way) with small black stripes on it for the print head to determine it's position. I should look at that in the first place. Maybe forgotten to place it back? or something not perfectly in position?
Good job buddy ive been working with hp printers for years and have hone thru probably 75 hp printers in the course of 12 years and have never seen such a fucking most amazing informative video every one has always said its the fing printhead the prinyhead so I would clean them sometimes it worked most time I had to replace the printer entirely no body in any other fucking video say s. This could be the problem and it was I bet it was for so many printers I went thru if I had seen this 3 years ago it woulf have saved me thousands of dollars and ample amount of hours time which also equals money thank you very much bro I can't thank you enough two thumbs up for this bad ass video
Thank you for Guide! But I have a problem. When I poweron my printer (6510) I see the error 0xc19a0022 on display. And I can’t push home or return buttons, it don’t make any sound, but buttons “right” “left” “?” and “x” do. Help me please if you may
One gear is not rounding exactly the second little white gear from big white gear on pump. It has some kind of “switch” which makes the gear up or down. Could you guess what the problem is? Please.
I did everything as described, and re-assembled it, (my tubes were soooo clogged.) But, I only have two problems. When I was re-assembling the printer, every mounting screw for the pump went in just fine, but the one mounting screw that mounts the pump to the bottom of the printer, would not screw in. It would go into the hole made for the screw on the pump, but the screw couldn't find the bottom hole that would mount the pump to the bottom. I've tried pressing it down and screwing it in, yet the screw just sits there and turns for infinity. This brings me to my other problem. my printer seems to have an indefinite carriage jam. As in, the printhead won't, or just can't move. Would an improperly mounted pump be related to the printhead not being able to move? I have checked multiple times, and yes the flat cables are plugged into the printhead, and it is properly seated. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! -Colin
It is possible that there is a eu and usa version or otherwise modification. A user reported problems when disassembling the gear assembly. It is possible that something broke in your printer. The printer used in my video is not mine so I cannot check. Unfortunately I cannot set an overlay in TH-cam anymore to give a warning on the correct location of my video.
I have the USA version with no modifications. Well, I suppose I could have broken something, but the only thing that's off about the printer as it stands would be the pump mount. Everything else looks ship shape. The pump works, but the carriage won't move on it's own, and it's completely connected, on the track and un-obstructed. I'm not sure what's going on with it at this point.
HELPPPP !!!! Well, I did as shown. Everything was without problem, BUT : when I removed the pump, the transparent tube for the black ink - OUT - came with. (It was very costipated, and the black tube also). Now it seems to be OK but I don't know where to put the tube back : it came with the pump and I haven't seen from where... Please, help me !!!!! (I took some pictures but I miss just this one ... of course... thanks !
Hi tried the clean and found the tube from the black was blocked. Cleaned it out reassembled and a total failure I get a printer or ink system fault 6100000a fault. Everything appears to be as it should but probably bin it bnow and buy a replacement after I get the ink of my hands, table, floor etc etc.
Looks like an problem with assembling the printer. I found a dutch thread on HP forum, translated it (with google translate(!)) for you. Maybe this helps: "I have solved the error with multiple printer with the error code 0x6100000b. the problem is in the cleaning area behind idle. there is a receptacle / cleaning part which is loose shot or not installed correctly. the problem can be solved by unscrewing the top of the printer, then the path where the print heads glide to remove back there again. in the upper right corner is the problem. By making this release and in the right way again to fix the problem is solved. Typically, a pivot point dislodged from the receptacle, also is the feather loose." Or maybe check this thread. h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Inkjet-Printing/the-printer-says-0x6100000a/td-p/1819827
did you find the positioning strip? it is 5mm wide, mostly clear, attached with a spring on one side. the strip runs through the print head assembly. the optical sensor is simply counting the stripes on the strip.
the stripes on it are hardly visible. You have to take a really close look. The strip can be seen in my video here: th-cam.com/video/h2nKtEM1x6E/w-d-xo.html, it's in front of the rubber belt. I really cannot imagine that you wiped them away, you cannot wash them away with water. Positioning system is your error. Sure about that. I'm afraid I cannot help you further.
Way to complicated for the average computer user ... After watching many videos on How To I realize the printer companies must be aware of this issue on Black Missing or printing blanks ... So my question is " Why can't they make a better mouse trap ? To fix anything electronic it does not pay you might as well by a new one ... This is my 2nd printer with the same problem ... I think I'm going to write to the Better Business Bureau and Consumer Affairs asking for their help ... We Folks are getting ripped off ... That's my opinion ...
That counts for every single device nowadays. Devices must be replaced completely even it's only partial broken. Some day, you may buy a printer with builtin cartridge which is single use.... ?!?
Sorry, but for me far too complicated and looking at the comments below it is really only for the technical minded people. Decided to throw into dustbin and go back to Epsom, cheaper ink and easier.
Great video. Thanks for sharing your process.

Excellent use of slides n video, very concise, clear. Great work, Thank you!
This is a great video, helped a lot. the side tanks that hold the waste ink were full to the brim on my printer so be very careful when cleaning.
Mr Marcel, you have done a tremendous job. A very detailed and structured video. Very helpful! best in class with youtube!!!
Thanks for the video it really helped me to fix my printer
To me was little bit different though one of the black tubes coming out of two cups was clogged wit dry ink, it was difficult to get it unclogged but i managed to do it and after the restart the printer was able to align the cartridges and now is working perfectly
Thank you one more time
Thank you for this video. If it were not for this video the HP6520 would be going in the trash. Had cleaned and replaced the
print head but still no luck. Followed your video and now it works great. Did have to clean the printhead twice before error
would clear.
Dear Marcel,
You are the best of the best.
God bless you and sincerely thank you.
I added it to the description, can be found in google soon. Glad I helped you!
Just now needed this video. Helped me immensely. Thank you!
Great effort to help people with a printer with a known fault. Mine is still heading for the tip and buying an epson
Muchas gracias desde Colombia y España!
Este video ha sido sumamente útil para mí. Felicitaciones por tan buen material.
Thank you very much from Colombia and Spain!
This video has been extremely useful for me. Congratulations on such good material.
Thanks man. I knew my printer didn’t just die. I just needed some direction. My printer works fine again. Good stuff!
Thanks!
The end of both black and color tube go to the waste-ink pad on the right. It's not connected to something, just hanging loose above the (dirty) pad.
Thank you!!
wonderful video I have two 6515 one the black ink does not work and the other the paper feed does not work.
Did the OOBE reset.....printer turned off and will not power on now. AWESOME!!!!!!!
Great video! Finally my problem is solved! Big thanks!!

@ganitoosh i don't remember that, sorry. I don't have the printer anymore.
Yes!
You are the best of the best.
It is some years ago, but I can remember you could install the tubes in the wrong way if you took apart the pump. So maybe that is your issue?
i tried this and mine were clogged but now when i put it all back together i get a error saying i have a paper jam but no paper is jammed. any suggestions?
Hello, it's me again. I have another question. When you check to see if the black tubes are clogged, do you use water? or are the black tubes the air system? and where to you disconnect to unclog them? I didn't do this the first time and unfortunately unclogging the transparent tubes didn't fix my issue. Thank you!
Veronica Lopez I had one black tube clogged. I cleaned it without removal, water pushed the dirt out(with syringe). there's 4 tubes, 2 for air, 1 for black ink, 1 for color ink. try to follow them.
Hi dean,
I think I deleted your latest reply unintentionally.
Maybe I cleaned it to good
+Thomas Turner dirt on optic sensor? loose cable?
Thomas did you ever figure it out?I just got the same message.
Where can I get spares
Great work! Thank you very much! It works!
Thank you for Guide! But I have a problem. When I poweron my printer (6510) I see the error 0xc19a0022 on display. And I can’t push home or return buttons, it don’t make any sound, but buttons “right” “left” “?” and “x” do. Help me please if you may
I am sorry, but I'm not familiar with that kind of error. Could be a faulty printhead, loose connector etc?
@@MarcelReinieren There is maybe everuthing. I think I damaged a printhead... Thank you for awnser.
Thank you very much! Thanks to your video I managed to bring my printer back to life

Goed om te horen :)
(I took some pictures but I miss just this one ... of course... thanks !
Well - it seems to be an overfull - or air tube ... For instant it's OK. Thanks, Marcel !!!
Thanks a million! Great video.
Maybe this helps:
"I have solved the error with multiple printer with the error code 0x6100000b.
the problem is in the cleaning area behind idle.
there is a receptacle / cleaning part which is loose shot or not installed correctly.
the problem can be solved by unscrewing the top of the printer, then the path where the print heads glide to remove back there again.
in the upper right corner is the problem.
By making this release and in the right way again to fix the problem is solved.
Typically, a pivot point dislodged from the receptacle, also is the feather loose."
Or maybe check this thread.

Great work! Thank you.
just what i need.thanks
where is the optic sensor, do I need to take the carriage out again
did you find the positioning strip? it is 5mm wide, mostly clear, attached with a spring on one side. the strip runs through the print head assembly. the optical sensor is simply counting the stripes on the strip.
I think I wiped out the stripes, can I get a sensor strip somewhere
can't imagine that. did you, or did you not find the plastic strip??
the strip is there but there are no marks on it
the stripes on it are hardly visible.
It is indeed not the easiest repair job, that's why I made this video.
