HP Photosmart 5520 Black Ink Problem

- This video is a how-to for the issue of black no longer prints even though there's plenty of black ink. This will work for color too, but the black ink seems to be more of an issue. I tried getting this printer working for about 7 hours and finally got it working! If I knew this, it would have taken about 10 minutes! Good luck and thanks for watching!
Here is the link for my video on how I got the ink stains out of my office rug: • Young Living Natural C...
Was just about to bin our 5520 for the same black ink issue and thought I would just try youtube for any support and found your video.
Thanks for taking the time to create this video to show your stages for solution and also showing your perseverance to resolve the problem when it didn't work first time.
Without youtube and people like you, my 5520 would have been in the bin.
Many thanks!
Thank you for taking the time to compliment the video. I hate throwing stuff away that can be fixed. Never tried this before, but we gave it a shot and it worked after a few attempts. I’m not a big ink jet fan, I feel as though the stuff just evaporates and it’s like buying gold to replace the ink! But it’s the one printer I had and I needed it to work. Still printing fine to this day. Thanks for watching!
Brilliant instructions. Managed to get my printer back to working order with your help. Thank you. One small tip to add, when you take the ink cartridge cradle out use dental floss thin brushes to clean in between the gap where the ink drips down and the ink nozzle. Did not submerge the whole ink cartridge cradle in water but "scooped" warm water continuously through the small gab and huge chucks of ink kept on coming out therefore unclogging the dried ink along with the dental floss brushes. Took me an hour to dismantle, clean the cartridge cradle and reassemble and to get it back up an running. Thank you very much Jarrod.
Thank your Marcus for watching and Im so glad it worked for you! The submerging of the ink cartridge head was a last resort for me, I played nice at first but it did nothing but resist!! It still behaves to this day after it’s been “reborn”! Thanks again for taking the time to watch and comment!
Your video really helped me a lot,I turned on my old printer after 3 years, put new inks but wasn’t printing black so I used your video for help & now it’s working like a charm.Just to add some trick I soaked print head in warm water & then blowed air from top using bike pump which unclogged everything.
That’s outstanding Varinder!! I’m glad you found the video helpful!! I like your idea with the bike pump! Hopefully that bike pump info will help someone else here too! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!
I had the same problem - no black printing - soaking the print head didn't help even though I thought I had cleared out the clotted ink and the water was clear but I still had a blockage, so I used a length of clear tube with about the same internal diameter to place over the circular gauze for the black ink at the back of the print head. I placed the print head in a dish of shallow water and carefully began to suck and blow on the tube to dislodge any blockage - the black ink that came out was amazing it took several goes but I could see that it cleared the print head. Success!! Everything is working as it should. Thanks so much for the tutorial it's saved me having to buy a new printer.
Thanks for watching!! I’m so glad the video helped out, and thank you for letting me know what helped you clear the blockage. I’ve also noticed that you get what you pay for when it comes to ink. I was buying cheaper ink for another printer and it was clogging my print head. One day I’ll grab a laser printer! Thanks again for watching!
A much simplified variation of this idea worked perfectly for us. We used a thick plastic straw just large enuff to stick the end of your pinkie in. Straw fits well in the printer head socket. Didn't have to take anything apart except remove the black ink cartridge. Then, grabbed a cheap plastic squeeze ball ear wax cleaner from medicine cabinet. It fits nicely over upper end of straw & forms a seal. Sucked some plain old tap water into the squeeze ball. (Maybe 1/4 full) Put it in the upper end of the straw making sure everything was straight up & down for good seal. Gave the squeeze ball a few good firm squeezes while applying gentle downward pressure on the straw. (make sure you have a good thick doubled up paper towel under the print head). Large globe of black inky water got all over the center of the paper towel. AHA ! Then, carefully dried up the water we spilled in the upper straw placement area. Replaced ink cartridge. Plugged in printer. Let it run & adjust itself. Then hit 'print'. Ran the same paper thru 2 or 3 times to get the ink back down into the flooded-out head. Wha-La ! Printer now prints perfectly. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the Common sense idea ! 5 stars ! Took around 15 minutes including clean-up.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I greatly appreciate it.
I so appreciate that you went through 7 hours of work just so that I could fix my printer! Thank you so much for filming this and sharing with all of us. I have had this printer for 7 years. It worked so beautifully when I first got it but it was left in storage for a very long time. When I got it back (3 years ago) it was doing this. I used my husbands printer for what I needed and ended up setting this one in the garage for 3 years. I badly need a printer for my business now and really wanted to fix this one. I can’t tell you how much I truly appreciate this video. THANK YOU!
Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a sweet comment!! I’m very happy that it’s brought new life to your printer. You are a sweetheart for taking the time to say thanks and that’s appreciated. Have a wonderful day please!
lol.. no where near 7 hour to fix!! LOL.. but i get guy talk...i was trying so hard to see which way to move the tabs as i have small chick fingers and not strong at all. but i figured it out, next time show directions of push or mention it, when you dont have strength on your side it can be cumbersome, so i got it apart and put back together, runs good only now it keeps reading clear carriage jam?? not thing is jamed? scanns good but wont print its in error because of the carriage jam
thank you
Had this problem a couple months ago. Even returned a black ink cartridge because I thought it was defective. After watching your video, I finally sorted it out, thanks so much!
That’s outstanding!!! I’m glad you found the video, fixed it yourself, and got your printer back! Thanks for watching.
Worked like a charm. Took only 15 min from start to end for me. I just filled a small container with hot water and rinsed the lower unit until water was clean and wiped off print head with wet paper towel. Messy job but it worked thanks for the video.
Outstanding and thank you for watching! Glad it helped.
Unbelievably! I finally got my printer back to work!
So I dug out the ink-pad (from my trash) and cleaned it up and put it back.
There are 2 things to consider:
1. There are 2 "ink pads" in the C309g, one is the one already mentioned below. Then there is a 2nd one, hidden under a metal plate. That one only come out mechanically before or after the printer has done some kind of job, especially cleaning. It is a small board with brushes, several small wiper blades that seem to align with the black and colored printer heads and one upward brush whose function is unknown.
2. You REALLY need to soak and clean the printer head very good. The first time I cleaned it, was not not good enough and it only lasted for one print. So I got pissed off and mixed up my own cleaning mixture.
Prepare DIY Cleaning Mixture:
- Hot water (not too much @ max 1:4)
- lab grade iso-propyl alcohol (~97%)
- few drops of dish detergent
- streak-free window cleaner (~9% Ammonia).
Cleaning Procedure:
(a) Washed entire head in running hot water until no more ink would come out.
(b) I took a syringe to repeatedly squirt my cleaning mix through the black ink intake and from print head side. (more ink came out - it never stops!)
(c) Soaked the entire head in my cleaning mix for about 15 min, occasionally stirring it. Once the mix was not getting dirtier I took it out and rinsed one last time with iso-propyl alcohol + water only.
(d) Shook out the remainder of water in the head and used soft tissues to draw out remaining liquid.
(e) Cleaned the "wiper-blades" with cotton swabs sticks soaked in the cleaning mixture
(f) Re-installed printer head and powered up.
Last but not least. On this old printer, just keep the original HP ink cartridges, but do NOT buy new ones. Just drill a small hole in them on top and refill from other refillable HP compatible ink using a syringe. Put a small piece of tape over the hole once filled. Your ink levels will be falsely shown as empty but it will print just fine anyway. The reason is that:
Ink levels as shown by HP products are false information and is just an estimate of what's left in the cartridge after having printed a certain percentage of black pages. There is NO electronics built in to actually measure the ink levels. Your $20 USD cartridges cost at most a few cents to produce and fill. It's a total rip off that should warrant a class-action law-suit!
Printer now works and have been printing perfectly for a week!
Thanks @Jarrod Fothergill
Some great information here my friend! I really appreciate you taking the time to reply with all of that! That’s incredible. I remember when I got my printer back together, it was showing my ink levels all empty. I double and triple checked all the wiring to make sure I didn’t leave anything unplugged. Couldn’t find anything but it still prints off of these same cartridges today, so there was plenty of ink. $60 for all the colors! Anyways thanks again for watching and a huge thank you for writing all of that great info up for us!
Watched the video and the first thing that came to mind is the forced priming seemed to be the key. Was able to clean the tar-like dried ink from the parking area pad with isopropyl 97% and some MrClean. Used paper towels saturated with alcohol between the carriage rails like you did to clean the heads which worked great. Finally, pushing ink in by blowing through the cartridge vent worked great to get the fresh ink back into the cartridge again. Not much pressure needed either. I used a pin to punch a hole and a soda straw to blow through the vent. Just a small bit of tape to keep the cartridge from drying out from the hole I made to finish up. Great work and quite entertaining too thanks!
Thank you John for watching! Well done to you! In my opinion they’re great printers with a small flaw. If maintained once every year or two, these printers will last quite some time. You gave a very nice write-up in your comment and that alone should be able to help a lot of people as well. Thank you again for taking the time to comment.
great video, I took my printer to bits three times to clean the printer cartridge holder, it became like an obsession, but thankfully it works now, thank you vey much for your help.
Thanks for watching and I’m glad it all worked out!
VERY ENJOYABLE AND HELPFUL VIDEO... you are very engaging and there's no way I'm going through all that trouble... I have not purchased the 5520 yet, and now will look at Brother! But you were so interesting, and funny too, that I just had to hang in and enjoy YOU doing the video and the job. What a Great Heart you have. Thank you... please, do more videos... on anything at all!
Thank you so much Diane! You are a sweetheart!! I have another video coming up, just needs a bit of editing. It’s about over the range microwaves and the their built in fans that suck....or blow depending on how you look at it. Either way, we fix it!
Your video really helped me. It is working again! It was messy and I had to use a lot of paper towels. I didn't take it apart, I just focused on unjamming the ink intake filter. Lucky for me I already had some 12 mm syringes and I used a drop of dishwashing soap to about a cup of lukewarm water. The paper towels were absolutely needed to mop up after injecting about three syringes full of water. I finally got much less black water back and thought I was done. I had to run about 12 test prints through and they were somewhat soggy, but at last I I got perfect prints again. What a savings this is. I've had this printer since about 2012 and never had any trouble with it before this. I hope I can make it last another 10 year. Ha! You did a great job on this video.
CC Aring Outstanding!!! I love what you did there! I made a mess of my rug by accident and I thought my wife was going to kill me! She had some natural cleaning product that took the ink right out. I couldn’t believe it. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to write such a nice comment and thanks for watching!
This is my second printer like this. Why I bought another one I don't know. Did the same thing twice , both printers had the same issue. I didn't want to toss this one yet without trouble shooting it. OMG thank you! Took me about 5 minutes to fix! Little smuggey yet but it prints BLACK now!
Diane & Russ Kell That’s fantastic!! Once I got the blockage cleared, I took the head back out and wiped it down with some alcohol. Cleaned the smudges right up. Thanks for watching!!
If an idea works, it’s not stupid. Dude you are brilliant. I had the same issues til I tried ur method and it worked! I didn’t have to spend hours soakin my printer head so THANK YOU!!!!!
HELENKELLER2013 Thank you very much! I’m glad it worked for you! My goal was to save people some time and money. This printer has treated me well, and I’d like to get a few more years out of it. It sits in a very cold office attached to our house that we don’t heat. It gets down to sub zero temps and this printer works great in these extreme conditions. Thanks again for your kind words!
Hi Jerrod, great video and thanks for posting. I finally threw mine off the back deck of our elevated house, went to the store and purchased a laser printer. So much for ink jets!
When all else fails, I love a good bit of destruction!! So I take it none of my “fixes” worked for you!! I wish I had a video of every item that gave me hassle to the point of destruction. I had a brother printer that refused to fax. It got the “Fist of Freedom”! It did not make it fax, though it helped my building anger level off. My wife an I laugh about it when ever we feed paper for it to fax. “What did you do??” I ask her like she did it!
So I watched a few videos similar to this, but I simplified the process just a bit. Don't take the printer apart! Open the lid and get the cartridges in the middle, then unplug the machine. Take out all of the ink cartridges. Take a 1/2 sheet of paper towel-fold it and slip it under the bottom of the ink cartridge carrier (mostly under the black ink well). Get a small bowl of pretty warm water and a straw. Draw up a little water in the straw and place it over the black cartridge hole (opening) and blow pretty hard. I did this about 3 times and kept changing out my paper towel and making sure everything was completely dry. Plug the machine back in and try to copy something. If you don't have any luck-repeat the process. I eventually started to see ink and then I just kept printing and printing and printing. Pretty soon I had a perfectly printed page. Only took maybe 30 minutes or less. I was so proud of myself😍
the last tip is the gem! after cleaning the print head blow ink through the cartridge and head into a paper towel underneath. cleared whatever dried blockage i had in there and now i have my printer back! thanks.
Clare Lanusse First, thanks for watching! I’m very happy it worked for you!! Truly a pain in the you know what, but now it works! We’ve been putting ours through its paces lately and it’s still chugging along.
Very good video Sir - Well Done. I watched your follow-up video where you explained how you blasted air through the cartridge vent hole so I decided to try that technique first. I parked the heads, took the printer out to my car so I could use my 12volt air compressor. I stripped back the cartridge-sealing strip to uncover the blocked cartridge vent hole. I attached a very fine compressor nozzle that came with my unit (I think its intended to inflate soccer balls or similar). I pushed the nozzle into the vent hole and started the compressor. The read-out got up to 13 psi before I switched it off. I took the printer back inside, reconnected it to the power, conducted a head clean and test print - Everything was now working. All undertaken within 10 minutes including moving the car onto the drive. Bottom-line is that I think your theory is sound. Well done and thanks.
Dave Harwood OUTSTANDING!! I love hearing that someone else has fixed the printer! This was my first video and I believe it’s been the most helpful video i have. Thank you for watching!
Dave Harwood When all else fails, blow it up!!
Jarrod, First thanks for your service and your enjoyable presentation on the HP 6520 printer. I haven't preformed the procedure yet but I'm sure it will fix my BLACK INK problem. When I first viewed you working on your carpet I instantly felt a INK ISSUE would occur because ink and I don't work well together. (I refill my own cartridges). Again, great job, enjoy your great family and Thanks for taking the time to help Me and others with this video. That screw under the label would have got me in trouble.
Thank you Alan for taking the time to make this very nice comment! All I wanted to accomplish with this video was help people keep what they paid for, and keep it out of the landfill. They’re good printers. The printer in this video has been in a cargo trailer, baking in the hot, South Carolina sun since August. I’m very interested in how it’s going to perform when I unpack it. May be another video in the works. Thanks again for watching, and it was my pleasure to serve my country!
Jarrod, you are brilliant! I had seen a Russian video on how to take it apart, but yours was better. I watched another video describing how to clean it while still in the system, and I did that, but, like you, that wasn't enough. Your discovery of blowing into the vent while at the same time holding it in place on the cradle dislodged whatever it was! And, because of your warning, I didn't get ink all over the floor either. Print quality is not all the way back, but I find that if you let the thing sit for a while it will re-saturate. Thanks! I owe you one!
Paul Joseph Thank you sir. We learn so much from trial and error, or just by making mistakes. Thank you for watching my video and I’m thrilled it worked for you! My printer is still going strong today, in fact , a friend of mine gave me a HP6700 and there’s a label on it that says to keep the cartridges in place, and unit plugged in until the new cartridges are to be inserted. My guess is to keep everything sealed up so the ink won’t dry out in the print head. If the cartridges are removed, the head doesn’t return to its parked position and allows air to get to the bottom and top of the print head, which lets the ink dry and clog. The ink is trying to do as its intended...dry fast. When it goes to its parked position, it rests on the ink pad and stays wet. Anyways, thanks again for watching and glad you brought her back to life.
Thank you for the video and skill you sharing. Very grateful for your help🙏
I will have a go to try to do the same and finger crossed 🤞 hopefully my printer will work again...although not looking forward of the hours I have to spend to do all that. Thanks again.
Thank you for your kind comments! I hope it works for you and hope it doesn’t take hours!! Thanks for watching!
I would've never thought to blow air into the vent on the cartridge to clear the print head... It's brilliant and it worked! I tried cleaning the heads with alcohol, wet q-tips, and a syringe full of water, all with absolutely zero success. Came across your video and blew some compressed air into the vent of the cartridge and boom, black ink! Still a few streaks but they appear to be clearing up each time I print. You helped me out BIG TIME!!! Thank you!
That fantastic!! So glad it worked for you. Dynamite was the next option!! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I did everything u did literally, I spent two days on this printer and I kept looking at video after video . My husband had to get me to stop for a day. Bc I was getting crazy. I did hit the printer lol and thank god I found ur video! Black is finally coming out !!!!
Violence-Sometimes the electronics need help seeing things your way!!! I’m glad you stuck with it! Thanks for watching.
Thanks Jarrod, using your information I got my printer running again.
Outstanding!!! I’m so glad it helped and got you back up and running. Thanks for watching!
Good help video, kept me from junking. All I did was use idea of blowing thru cart and head. Used straw, blew thru cart “air vent” which I opened with knife. Hopefully cart doesn’t leak out! Bottom line, never let ink run out and set empty or open without cart for any length of time. Thanks again.
Andy Skinn These are all good points and thanks for watching! I think my issue was I opened the ink replacement door, took out the cartridges, and left the door open. This allowed air to the cartridge tray both top and bottom. With quick drying ink, it was guaranteed to dry and clog. Open the door and take the cartridges out ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE REPLACEMENTS IN YOUR HAND!! Don’t take them to the store like I did! Again, thanks for watching !
Thank you so much for this video! I was able to fix the black ink flow on my printer and get it working again. And I'm glad I watched to the end of the video; I also needed to blow through the print head to get the ink through. Thank you thank you!
ruthmarkable Thank you for watching to the end. It was one of my first videos and wasn’t recorded properly and wasn’t edited enough. However, it did record everything I went through with this printer and not just the warm and fuzzy times!! Thanks again and I’m glad it helped.
You Sir are a legend! I remover te top and removed the color cartridges. Ten i put my lips on the Black vent opening and had to blow hard till there was a Middle Black ink. Prints again now ! Had put much time before with soaking it
Polletjeuh I’m so glad it worked for you!! Mine is still working fantastic as well. Mine is exposed to extreme temperatures as it sits in our home office that is not temperature controlled. Sub zero temps in the winter and 90s-100s during the summer! Picture perfect printing. Any, thanks for watching and I’m glad you have your printer back!
This worked! Thank you! I couldn't get the touch screen unit off to remove those two screws but was able to work around it. Some swearing involved, but after about 30 minutes it was up and running!
OUTSTANDING! I’m very happy that it worked out for you. Thanks so much for watching!
Thanks a lot! just dismounted my 5520 and left on a small water bed the printing head... it's astonishing HP does not repair and change that part... Next Printer will be a Brother.
Great Job, thank you so much again!
Pablo Bernal I'm so happy it worked for you. My HP is still chugging away, and prints like its brand new! Thanks for watching!
Just trying to sort the same problem out.
Amazing that great chaps like you have to sort these problems out. Is it possible
that a few HP employees might see this - and be hanging their heads in shame?
Thanks Jarrod for your very logical and considered approach to your problem we had the same problem in our case all cartridges worked minus the black which appeared to be clogged. We ended up ditching the HP for a Canon Ink Jet which prints great it is the G2600. When I have some time I will try what you have done to see if I can free the clog from the HP printer which has been disconnected and is now lying idle on our carpet. I don't feel like throwing it in the trash can at this point but when I get a day free I will take it outside to work on it. Thanks on all the tips for disassembly. Regards Mike
Michael McKenzie Let me know how it goes and don't hesitate to ask me any questions! Mine is still printing strong!!
I just did the same thing I am sick of spend big money on HP and they die in 2 years.
Thanks for this. Mine clogged up, hot hot water soaked fix it. Wouldn't recognize magenta cartridge, loose ribbon, had to wedge it in place with a bit of hard plastic. Fixed it MacGyver style. Your teardown instructions were invaluable.
Stephen Hayhurst Fantastic! I’m glad it worked! And I’m glad it saved you some replacements money! Thanks for watching!
I followed your videos on cleaning the printer and it was a little bit hesitant on taking the whole thing apart so I followed you to the end and your latest update was the most helpful ice put a little bit of alcohol and Windex into the top of the Cartlidge and blew into it with a straw and that was the ticket my printer is now back to work thank you very much
So glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
Boom! I soaked the filter head, also used a syringe to force water through the cartridge screen with no luck. Forced air with my mouth through the cartridge vent on top with it installed with no luck. I tried it with that same syringe with just air and walla..it worked. Thank you
Blythe Ag & Aviation thanks so much for watching! I’m so glad that you got the printer working again! I got mine screwed up by taking the cartridges out and left the top open. This kept the print head off the wet ink pad and allowed the head to dry and clog. How did yours end up getting clogged?
I really have no idea. The old black ink cartridge stopped working, put in a new one and it just wouldn't work. So maybe I have, at some point, left it too long off its storage pad
Blythe Ag & Aviation Ok. I was curious if you made the same mistake I did. A friend of mine gave me an HP6700 that had sat unused for quite a while with the black ink empty, but the head was parked where it should be. I put in all new in and it printed just fine. I was quite surprised but very happy. I guess it doesn’t matter how long it’s empty, just as long as it stays parked on it’s ink pad when not in use. Thanks again for watching!
I haven't tried this yet but wanted to say thanks for a good video. You're a good guy and you gave great information.
p.s. I'm a painter and I know black always dries faster. It has to do with how much that pigment absorbs it's 'vehicle' (what makes it flow).
Gen Val Well thank you very much! I was running out of patience with his printer! 7-8 hours of troubleshooting! But after I forced the ink from the cartridge into the print head it began to dribble ink through the head! It's been going strong since!! Thanks for taking the time to comment!
That was brave. Pulling it to bits. Need another video after that to show how to put it all back together again. You had bits everywhere. Quite scary for me.
It can be intimidating with all the screws and cables, but that’s one of the benefits of videoing the process. If I get confused, I’ll just watch the disassembly process in reverse!
A very thorough video EXCEPT you didn't show re-installation of the cleaned cartridge. At least on my unit the smallest of the three cable appears to need soldering to get it back on unless I am not locating the socket.
Yeah it was one of my first videos, and should have included that. My wife was my camera man on the first day, and the cleaning went into a second day. She was not around on the second day to hold the camera during reassembly. My print head had molex plugs on the ribbon cables. Does yours not?
Great job giving those useful explanations Jarrod, it really helped.
Thank you Father for watching and I’m very happy you found it helpful. I hope you got your machine up and running again.
Try cleaning the heads a few times first. Worked for me. Saved a lot of work.
Continued-
Using a standard household plunger I used the mixture of boiling water and Mr. Clean to apply to the upper portion of the print head, area where the ink cartridge sets. Let solution sit for 1 to 2 minutes. Remove ink soaked rolled paper towel from under the ink carriage. Repeat one more time.
Hooray after running the printer cleaning head selection twice I was up and printing all colors. The Black ink was bold and bright. I was scheduled to buy another printer in a few days but no need now. I refused to take the whole printer apart.
This complete effort took no more than 20 minutes start to a working printer.
I hope this can help someone else.
Rich
hi Jarrod, thank you for this video, it help a lot, at first it did not work the tricks you said, tried for about 3 hours. but I did something else, i put boil water with vinegar and biocabonate of soda (baking soda) and soak it for about an hour and clean it with syringe de black head. and guest what it work!!!!!!, just be careful not to wet de electronics.
Liliana Dhupelia Thank you for watching. These printers seem to be a big pain you know where! I’m glad you got it working, and thanks for commenting!
thanks for taking the time to do this. must of been a great sense of satisfaction to sort it. I'm the same. Same printer and I think I'll upgrade to a laser. Thanks again.
Thanks for your kind words and I’ll probably grab a laser next time as well.
I selected 'clean printhead' (in the tools section) about 8 times and it started working again perfectly.
Lucky!! I tried that as well, like you many times. Thanks for watching and I’m glad you got yours working.
Your guess is correct! The docking tray is not hidden or locked. It's above your puddle. You expose it by turning the black wheel on the left hand side counter clockwise. Once the tray is exposed you'll see the sponges that keeps the printheads moist. This tray moves in and out every time you open the top to expose the ink cartridges. Unfortunately, your little mishap is an omen of your future. The "black ink" issue is that the black ink sponge erodes over time and the printhead is not flush with the sponge so and the ink dries and clogs. Cleaning the printhead is a temporary fix. The problem is the sponge.
M Om Great info. Thank you. We’ve had the printer in storage since August and I’m interested in how it’s going to perform after sitting in a hot cargo trailer all summer. If it needs another fix, that will be another follow up video I guess! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Hilarious. I'm laughing at your attempts and description because it's the same he'll I just went through! The black ink blew all over my kitchen pantry doors despite having it aimed at the trashcan. Lolll. About to turn it back on after several cleanings...let's see how this one goes!
So we basically have to detach our whole printer to fix this problem?
Unfortunately you do need to take the printer apart to get to the print head.
Thank you my friend for watching! I did try that, but didn’t have positive results. I tried the overnight soak with the print head resting on moist paper towels, then went to soaking it in a bowl of hot water the next day, alcohol swabbing, alcohol soaking, and nothing worked. Pushing the ink through the print head was all that worked for me. Thanks again for watching!
Similar to you I am already 4 hours into this. Thanks for sharing. Now I know what to do. I think I will find a plastic tube to blow into the ink head and hopefully that finally clears it.
I’m glad it has brought you some hope!! Please let me know if it works! Thanks for watching.
Great video & finally a solution that works! Thanks!
Outstanding! Glad it worked.
I did everything but take out the cartridge casing...did not want to mess it up. I was able to clean under with damp micofiber cloth. Night and day with the test print!
Here is the true fix:
1. Unplug printer.
2. Throw away HP product.
3. Replace it with a Brother printer.
4. Never buy a cheap HP product again.
Step 2 should be “smash printer” for those of us that spend too much time fixing stuff! Thanks for the comment and watching!
Yes, next time, we buy a Laser printer (screw the color option). But kudos for the how-to about removing print head, soaking in isopropyl, with a little compressed air chaser. It worked. Thanks buddy.
Nicholas Beck I’m glad it worked! If people ever stop giving me their nice, like-new printers saying “you can have it if you can fix it. If not, just throw it away” then I’d buy a laser printer. Until then, I’m in no shortage of fully functioning printers!! Speed wise, laser is the way to go for sure!
Thanks for watching sir!
Same experience here, cleaning the print head seems to have been useless, first time I blowed it did nothing, so I blewed stronger and longer, and it spilled much ink inside the printer. I then had to clean with towels, and print a bunch of white pages, to remove all that. I suspect the problem is with the cartridge only, especially the black ones, that have a tendency to dry. A design mistake I would say...
It worked! Many thanks.
Outstanding! Glad it worked out. Thanks for watching!
Yes... punch it... I remember slapping our old consule TV on its side back in the '60s. Of course, that was done because the vacuum tubes had come loose and a good slap on the side of the unit usually made them re-sit back into place. Great vid!
Thomas Beatings for non-compliance!! I was definitely agitated after being so careful not to damage the electronics for hours, I figured it was just going to the dump anyways, let’s beat it!! She’s still printing beautifully! It was just a few quick jabs to the print head!!
That ink pad you mention, there is a little hydraulic pump that pumps blank ink to that pad, wonder what else that pumps' purpose besides keeping the printer head moist, because I notice i have an air bubbles in the line, would that cause the blank ink not to function?
JERRY FONTANARES Hi Jerry and thanks for watching! I saw that too and I’m not totally sure how that system works and mine had air in the lines as well.
i soaked my whole print container in vinegar and put it airing cupboard for 4 day's ..now it print's perfect ..thank's for showing me how to disassemble..but wasn't needed ..and as u say by a new one
Michael Dart I’m glad you got yours working. I don’t like paying for something new if the old item can be fixed. Mine is still printing like a charm. Thanks for watching!
This video is amazing! I laughed so hard about the printer beatings.
Ha ha ha! I’m glad you liked the video and I hoped it helped, even if it was just a laugh!
Imma just get a new printer this is to much work but thanks for the video
I agree! I just hated buying a new printer knowing that the printer was fixable. I’ve since ditched the ink jets printers for laser printers. Thank you for watching.
@@237130 yea I had mine printer for 8 years working fine no problem until yesterday got the message saying something wrong with the printer
When you say you blew into the print head, how did you do that? Did you get a straw and blew into the mesh area? or Did you use compressed air? I'm about to give up on my printer since the black is still streaky, but I figured I should ask!
Julissa Barajas Hi Julissa and thanks for watching! I blew into the ink cartridge while it was mounted in the print head. Under the sticker on the ink cartridge is a vent hole. I blew into that to force ink into and through the print head. That dislodged the blockage. I hope that helps you.
Thank you, very well and professional explained
Thank you for watching and commenting. I hope it worked for you.
Thanks. But when I plug it back in, I see/hear that the power is on but the display does not come on. What did I connect wrong please?
B R probably one of the thin ribbon cables has become unseated. These thin white flat cables if not carefully handled can become dislodged at either end or in extreme cases become cracked. More than likely its dislodged. I believe they’re held in by compression. There is one that runs from display to the circuit board on the left front on the inside of the printer. There are several ribbon cables attached to the circuit board. Make sure all of those are firmly seated as well. After that, I’m not sure what else to check for your display. Only a ribbon cable carry’s power and data to the display. If you lift the top lids of the printer as if you were taking out the ink, look to the left front and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Keep me posted.
I have tried everything!! When cleaning the printhead and blowing air through the printhead, no black ink comes out. What else can I do?
I'd try soaking in hot water for a while just the bottom of it. Keeping the circuit board dry. Changing the water and wiping the print head off a couple times. When you put it back together run the quality report until it comes out looking good.
What he said!! I know it’s a pain. I had to soak mine several times, even submerged the entire print head, always making sure it was completely dry before putting it back together and energizing it. Soak it over a few nights if you have to.
Thanks for this, my printer works again! :D
OUTSTANDING!!
Hi, I could follow the video until about 10:00 - I soaked the head several times, and it still does not print out black. I'm about to kick it like you did. But what was the final trick? You blew air through the cartridge and it spelt all over your carpets, but did not solve the problem. Then you combined some 2 stupid ideas of blowing through the cartdrige and finally everything works - I did not get that (sorry, I'm Austrian). Can you describe in more detail what you did? Did you remove the cartridge and blow down to the printhead without the cartidge? But you talk about blowing air into the top of the ink cartridge - did you open it up? Thanks...
The so called “stupid idea” lead me to the discovery of how to fix my machine.
I blew through the cartridge and ink came out. I placed the cartridge back into the carriage and blew into the cartridge again, thereby forcing pressurized ink into the carriage and dislodging the ink blockage. Hope that helps you.
Ah, I get the idea now - but still I don't know how you managed to blow into the cartridge, especially when it's placed in the carriage (there is no "air inlet"). Did you drill a hole on top of the cartridge? @@237130
@@loopmasterb.2136There’s a hole under the sticker that wraps over the top of the cartridge. I blew into that hole.
Thank You Sir. Actually a very good video.
Thank you for the compliments and I hope the video helped you out.
try this 1st! remove the ink cartridge's, take a paper towel fold it and dampen it with warm water, put it under the cartage carrier and move the carriage over the paper towel a few times then clean the ink contacts with a damp paper towel. put ink cartridges back in and print a few times till the dampness is gone on the paper. this cleared mine up perfectly!
Funny as I sat listening to the whole video, my printer sat opened with the cartridges in the opening. Then suddenly when the video was almost over, it came to life and the cartridges slid into the cubby. I agree that there may be a pad that keeps them moist, But i wonder now if HP thought of the same thing. Either way, I’m going to pull this thing apart just like you did.
Thx for the tips.
PTP
By the way, we did buy a laser printer (👍👍👍) as our first printer, im just trying to keep this thing working longer in another office in our house.
Thx
I problem. It’s pretty easy to get apart. My thought was if it’s not working after all of the gentle soaking, force the ink through! Blowing through the ink cartridge while it’s still in the print head worked for me! Good luck and keep me posted!
This was my Mother in laws printer, sat there for a while with the Black Ink not working, I knew I had a tough road ahead to get it working. Almost 12 hours later, countless dismantling and TH-cam videos. Soaking, boiling water, alchohol, more soaking, boiling water, Krud Kutter! more water, more soaking, dismantling, not putting a ribbon wire back properly, dismantling again. Some of the Print tests showed some real promise, even some sentences in Black showing through, like a big tease. Then nothing.....absolutely nothing. Whiteness. No Black ink at all. Finally I take a straw and started blowing and blowing and blowing, adding more boiling water, cleaning out the "ink pad"........and finally. Nothing. No change, in fact it lead to me dealing with about an hour of "damage to Printhead" then Failed Printhead error........I finally got it working again, printing. And no change whatsoever. Its done. I tried, I really did, and I dont usually fail at these things. Good luck to everyone out there! I think this would have definitely worked had the printer not sat idle for so long. I just dont have another 3 days to keep working on it, my sanity wont allow it.
“A” for effort!! Holy $&@?!!!! The only thing that will fix that machine is a good fire!! Drag it out back and make a bonfire! I wish you had better luck, but thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. Greatly appreciated!
How do you call the part where the printer ink head gose cause the white strip that is on the side came off
I’m sorry Sonia, I’m not sure what your asking me. Are you asking me what the part is called that holds the print head or how to put the ribbon cables back in?
@@237130 yes
@@237130 I have to buy that part dont 3 how is called
The part that goes side to side
A "Great Printer" wouldn't leave thousands of people with the black ink printhead PLUGGED!
Nek Nosnaws I agree completely!!! I should have added when it works!!
Is it a good idea to ever leave any printer without its cartridges even just to make sure you get the right ones when buing new ones? Why not take a picture of them and leave them in even when empty to prevent the printhead drying out? Thank you for a good video. Hope you are not into photo printing. You will be dissapointed with a lazer printer.
It was certainly a lesson learned for sure! I took them with me because the store I get ink from would give a discount if you brought in your old cartridges, so there was a method to my madness! No I don’t print pictures at all. I’ll take digital media to the professionals for printing and framing. Thanks for watching.
think you saved me a bucket load. Didn't get the ribbon set.
You the man. Thank you
Hello mister, Have you got any idea about a solution of this problem error 0x6100000a? in a 5515 photosmart HP, thanks. The problem start saying "don´t move by paper? after a simple clean the next was this error and put in problems with jam ink transporter, crazy, please I hope you can help me. best regards.
I’m so sorry Jose but I’m not familiar with that problem. I wish I could help you sir and wish you good luck.
I would really like to know how long to soak the printhead & how best to blow air through it. Just with my mouth or a compressor or canned air?
LadyDarkness1976 Well it seems there’s no right answers to those questions!! Some people report that an overnight soak was good enough. That wasn’t the case with my print head. I tried alcohol, hot water soaking, and lastly, forcing air by mouth through the ink cartridge while it was locked into place in the print head. That forced the ink to flow through the print head and solved the problem. So removing the print head, then placing the black cartridge back into its slot and blowing into the cartridge vent, forcing the ink into the head, forced the ink to push through the head! Sorry to repeat myself, but I’m trying to make it as clear as possible!!Thank you very much for watching!
Jarrod Fothergill Thank you so much for your quick response!! Last question (for now lol), how long dry time did you give the printhead before putting it back in??
Catania Cowgill Well definitely make sure the small circuit board on the back, the plastic ribbon cable connections, and the bottom of the print head are as dry as possible. You don’t want to short anything out on the circuit board!! Toward the end, I was running out of patience fast and I’ll admit that the print head was not exactly treated nicely on some of the installations!! The printer even got a punch or two right around the 8 hour mark of troubleshooting!!
good, but we need to see how you clean it
My printer printed black text perfectly, then on the next page something went awry. Imagine pulling close a white Venetian blind over a black background until you see only the white. That happened on the next page. I ran the Clean Printhead function a couple of times. That didn't fix it. Thought it might be corruption in the printer buffer and left the printer off for an hour. Tried it again and still got no black print from it. So I left the printer plugged in, but a week has gone by without usage. I watched this video for a fix then thought I might just do a print test before applying Jarrod's advice. It printed black perfectly first time. In my case, I'm guessing that something in the process the printer goes through after a long period of disuse fixed the issue; something that is absent from the printhead cleaning function.
Great video! My 5520 has a black ink issue; it keeps leaking ink. Other than that it prints beautifully. No idea what to do about it. Anyone?
You may have to see if the pad that the print head sits on is loaded with ink. There may be so much ink built up on it that the print head is carrying the excess ink and dragging it across the paper. I have another printer that has a saturated ink pad and needs to be cleaned out. I’ll do a video on that process, if I don’t just toss the thing in the trash out of frustration!
Also, thanks for watching!
@@237130 that might be the problem. I’m having an other go at it this weekend. For now I’m done with it. Thanks for your answer, very much appreciated.
I'm gonna hit like on this video even though I'm not gonna do the steps. I'm sure it'll work too, I appreciate your efforts. I'm just tired of this P.O.S. It's 6yrs old. I'm gonna look around online for an affordable laser printer. 🤷🏾♂️
I am having problems with yellow., I still love my ole hp 930c, only have the 5520 for scanning but can't do that till this is fixed. :( might by a cheapie
Very helpful. Thank you
Never mind. I apparently pulled the socket off the circuit board along with the cable. One needs to be very gentle with that cable.
Patrick McVerry Are you able to solder that back on?
Your video realy helped me. It is working again! Thank you!!!
Linda Boomhouwer That’s fantastic! I’m glad it helped. Thank you for watching!!
Thanks. Just fixed my moms printer
That makes me very happy. I’m glad it helped and thanks for watching!
My 5520 HP stopped printing black ink. I removed all 4 ink cartridges, used mixture of boiling water and Mr Clean. laying a rolled paper towel, soaked with the solution, under the cartridge holder. Then using a standard household
This is what I needed!
Outstanding! I hope it works out for you. Thanks for watching.
Thank you
My pleasure.
Thank you the blowing method really works! thanks again!
Charlie Sheehan Thank you for watching and letting me know that it works! :)
Jarrod Your TH-cam was very helpful. I found a new way to clear the blockage. I used a Panasonic Oral Irrigator (water floss) to squirt water at the blockage - i use this for my teeth. The mistake i then made was to have the band that goes across too low down. Once I fixed that my printer became like new. I might switch to a laser printer next time but they are much bigger.
GASBAGSMike Thanks for watching! If I ever have to buy a printer again, I believe I’ll be going for the laser printer myself! Mine has been in storage, in the southern summer heat, in a cargo trailer all summer and I’m interested how it’s going to perform when I plug it in. It’s probably all caked up and will have to be a video made on its resurrection! Thanks again for watching!
My printer gets me crazy i have the same problem it won't print black..i did everything but still won't print unfortunately
Then I believe at this point, it’s time to take it out back and say goodbye!! After soaking and trying to force air through it, and still not working, it’s probably a solid block of dried ink. Depending on how much time you want to invest, try soaking the print head for a few days. Thanks for watching. Let me know if I can help.
I have a problem.
Hp deskjet ink advantage 5275
Error code
0xB8042326.
I was using normally and suddenly it is showing error.
Pls help
Kedar Kulkarni I’m sorry I won’t be much help to you with that printer. I’m unfamiliar with that model, but a quick search on google produced a bunch of steps to try to clear the code.
@@237130 i did everything but I couldn't resolve.
Its new device.
Btw Thank you very much
Tried each step a number of times but still no black ink, any suggestions would be welcome.
After soaking the printer head, putting the cartridge back in the head, and blowing into the vent on top of the cartridge -to force ink through the head, other than that I’m out of suggestions I’m afraid. Thanks for watching though.
I did not know how to open the screen. Now the it’s damaging itself. I wonder why.
If your print head slams side to side, the long grey ribbon is not between the three sensors on the backside of the print head. I believe there are two sensors on top and one on the bottom. The grey rubbing needs to run between the top and bottom sensors.
Jarrod Fothergill any recommend video about it? The screen didn’t work as well.
John Yousef The ribbon cable behind the screen needs to be pushed in all the way and the cable needs to go in the exact way it came out. In other words, maybe it’s upside down. I wish I could help more sir.
Thanks for this video.. I have a similar model (5524) and it just blows my mind that you need to unscrew a billion screws and take your whole printer apart just to get to the printheads. This is ffing insane. of course I don't have a torque screwdriver set so gotta get that as well...
great. wonderful printer when it works but it's torture when it doesnt and you need to repair sh*t.
It does suck that we have to do this. I believe it’s a side effect of having fast drying ink. My mistake was taking the cartridges out to the store with me. This allowed the ink in the head to dry out.
I wish you best of luck with your repair and thanks for watching. I hope the video helps in some way.
Did all the steps, and black still does not work. Will be purchasing another printer.
Jannigjen Gockel I’m very sorry to hear it didn’t work for you. It must be a very stubborn clog. Thank you for watching and good luck with the new printer.
love it! Thanks for sharing!
I did all these steps and I might have fixed it, only now it says the ink cartridge head is jammed. It moves freely all the way left and right. Followed all steps to clear the jam but it still says it is jammed. I'm about to give up and buy a new printer.
Richard Napolitano Don’t give up yet!! Did you verify that the black plastic strip that runs from side to side is properly threaded between the three sensors on the back of the print head? This plastic strip tells the printer where the head is in relation to the paper. On the back of the head, there are three sensors, two sensors over one sensor. The thin black strip has to be threaded between those sensors. Check it out and let me know.
Jarrod Fothergill That was definitely the problem with the print head alignment. I was able to fix that. But now I have another problem. When I put it all back together, the LED display isn't working. The power button is lit up and glowing, but the display is off. I made sure the ribbon was plugged in. Not sure what's going on now.
Richard Napolitano have you taken a look at the ribbon cable for breaks? And have you made sure that both ends are firmly seated in the connectors? After that, I’m afraid I’m not sure what to look at for the screen.
