McLaren’s dramatic F1 2023 turnaround explained

  • McLaren’s Formula 1 revival was on shaky ground for the first half of 2023, but its recent upturn in form gives hope to fans of the papaya team that it’s very much back on target.
    Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri starred in qualifying at the British Grand Prix, taking second and third on the grid. They would have finished there, but for an unfortunately-timed safety car that meant Piastri dropped to fourth behind Lewis Hamilton.
    That’s a dramatic turnaround for a team that was at the back as recently as the Miami Grand Prix in May and looked in danger of falling permanently behind its midfield rivals. The car was so impressive at Silverstone that Lewis Hamilton called it “a rocketship".
    So was this a one-off, or are there signs of a genuine resurgence for McLaren? What changes has it made to its car and what still needs to be done if its to re-emerge as a front running force in the coming years?

    • @The_Curious_Cat
      @The_Curious_Cat ปีที่แล้ว +50

      Yes, but the Mercedes had used softs, not new ones. With new ones it might have been a different story, especially on the first two laps of the restart that Hamilton was all over Norris. But after Lando got his tires warmed up he was gone. Also fairly at the same time Hamilton's softs started suffering with overheating because of all the fighting, so he had to back off or he would lose the place to Piastri on the long run.
      But the updates worked, which is awesome to see. the more teams start understanding how to catch up RB, the better. It would be nice if 2024 was far more competitive with several teams fighting for the titles. And since I don't trust Ferrari will do it, it's nice to see other teams gaining performance.

      They just have the perfect car design. Such a wide operating window. It's crazy how they can just dominate completely different tracks like, Silverstone, Monaco, and Baku. Also keep in mind that only Red Bull and Mclaren are the only cars with a front pull rod rear pushrod suspension configuration (everyone else keep the previous push rod/pull rod or some other variant). since the suspension arms deflect the air below/over the car is not surprise copying the RB style will have additional benefits.

    Impressive how close Piastri was to Norris. That gap between them pretty much equates to the new front wing. It's the tires; Pirelli made re-inforced tires for this GP, in addition to the fact that three hardest compounds were used. This allowed McLaren to exploit the upgrades and hide that they were very hard on the tires. In some other tires configuration, they would probably drop 7-8-9 positions back as all those cars more stable on any compound overtake them. Its great to see them back.

    • @catchnkill

I feel we’re getting excited and I accept that, but we're going to go to a couple of tracks coming up where I'm sure people are going to be saying, ‘What have you done now? • @stephen01king
      @stephen01king ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason they started on the back foot this season was because they realised their previous design concept was unworkable and they had to abandon it to work on a new one. The upgrades are the parts of the new design concept that they managed to finish after starting over. Hopefully next year they can just continue with this design and not have to start over.

    • @Tyler_Evans0411
      @Tyler_Evans0411 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stephen01king I know why they had to, it just isn’t a good excuse with how much the engineers are paid and how highly touted they are. They showed up to Bahrain this and last year with brakes that melted, and added on the front ferrings that would fall off. They blamed everything on Honda in 2017 then realized they designed a donkey in 2018. I for once would like to see em put their money where their mouth is

However, this year shows that the competitiveness of the field keep it pretty much open. Yesterday it was Aston Martin, today it's McLaren, and who know who it's going to be next time...
