The unexpected Red Bull threat for F1 2024

  • “We’re coming for Red Bull”. That was McLaren driver Lando Norris’s promise after finishing second to Max Verstappen in the Japanese Grand Prix.
He’s realistic enough to know Red Bull is uncatchable in F1 this year, but he’s talking about the big picture. And that means potentially taking the fight to Red Bull in 2024.
That might sound ridiculously optimistic for a McLaren team that hasn’t won a championship since 2008 and has just one victory in the last decade, but its recent form has been phenomenal.

@@MrShadowofthewind Norris lost quite some time (they state 12 seconds, but realistically it was about 7) under the VSC, when not permitted to overtake the slow perez, who could not keep up the VSC laptime due to "technical difficulties" before the first (:D) retirement. In the end, the race pace difference was not as substantial as it had been before, even though suzuka is as good of a track as it gets for RB.
Verstappen even was informed about it, and had to keep pushing hard, as mclaren were only a tenth slower in the latest stint.
The Quali differences were huge ,though, and that last stint is for sure not representative for overall race pace. The RB is still substantially ahead overall.

This sounds good for the team but remember that we were talking the exact same for aston martin and look at what happened to them , both aston and mclaren are heavily influenced by the rb concept and ofcourse copying that will lead to performance but is it short-term? , because with a copied concept you will never be able to match the ones who actually designed it ,
Instead taking the ideas which the rb concept works upon like downwash , platform control , stability , suspension kinematics etc should be worked on by the teams with an original concept of theirs

Aston Martin went in a different direction this year, i really don't get it why people still say "RB concept" to AM smh.

I wonder how much of Mclaren turn around is due to the suspension layout of Mclaren and RB (they are the only 2 cars that use a pull-rod / push-rod configuration). At this point the top teams understand the basic RB aero advantage but if the suspension can´t cope with the DF then is useless (as Merc show last year).

Every team is coming for RB! An over 19 second deficit for McLaren at the end of a race is huge to overcome. Are they headed in the right direction? Clearly they are but this sport is measured in tenths of a second per lap. Anyone who thinks RB cannot find those tenths for next year may want to reconsider that thinking.
McLaren, Aston Martin and Mercedes are all playing catch up with the same power unit and Mercedes appears to be the furthest behind because the two aforementioned customer teams have bested them with bigger leaps in performance without the benefit of their own wind tunnel. Once the playing field is level on that front Mercedes will be further in the hole.
Then there is the Max factor. Like him or dislike him he is a generational talent. If he was to quit after this season he would still be recognized as one of the greatest of all time. He can extract performance from a car that others cannot. How many have crashed and burned driving the same car as him..... three soon to become four.
He is gifted, can handle pressure and is fierce, while lots of other drivers on the grid are good, great or excellent.

Verstappen may be world champion, but the team needs both drivers to be equally quick and bring both cars home on or in the top 5 every race to win the constructors. Red Bull can win the Constructors with just Max winning the bulk of the points finishes right now but in the coming seasons as other teams close the gap and begin seriously challenging for wins, it becomes imperative that Red Bull must have two drivers who can finish closer to each other. This is also a shortfall with Aston Martin. Lance Stroll is not capable of delivering what Alonso and the car can do and Stroll's lack of good points finishes will be their downfall if they lose 4th place in the Constructors to McLaren.

many f1 aerodynamists have shown that the point of the edge wing is to spin up the vortex that seals the underfloor, and also change the location of said vortex in the diffuser. the air around the rear of the floor/in front of the rear tire is actually being sucked into the floor, so the air that comes on top of the floor in that area gets sucked back in. its a very sensitive area and extremely important to get this right as if affects rear downforce tremendously

At the time , they had 3 winless season and last won the title in 1991.Though Coulthard won the opening race taking advantages of the problems Ferrari and Williams had , they were basically only the 4th team on the grid. They really came alive in the second half of the season specially with Hakkinen having few pole-positions and retiring from the lead 2-3 times ( which undirectly hugely helped Villeneuve's case) and David winning at Monza. Then , in 1998 , they had the best car on the grid.

The biggest reason I don’t see this happening is based on the way their seasons start. For the past 3 years they’ve always been on the same trajectory from the start to the end of the season, they start off the season having an embarrassingly slow car, and then work their way up as the races go by, and don’t have a competitive car until mid season.
That will not happen to redbull. Redbull having a bad start to a season is having the second/third fastest Car. McLaren having a bad start to the season (which is them having a normal start to the season) means struggling to get out of Q1 and finishing 5 positions up from last place. I don’t see this trend stopping for them, so as much of a McLaren fan as I am, I cannot believe that this has any possibility of happening

With the new regs, a car can be exceptional at one track and be dreadful at the next, except for Redbull (barring Singapore), so Mclaren need to be on it at a majority of the tracks to convince me they are the one's to dethrone the newey machine.

Yes, surely next year RB will have it more difficult due to the wind tunnel time restriction and the natural convergence of the cars, but let's be realistic, RB has it all.
They have the best car, the best driver, the best pit stop crew, the best strategists, the best engineers... Sounds like something you said in 2021 and 2022. But its history of wins involved a PU advantage over most teams, a budget advantage over most teams, and refining its existing car with a mountain of data. In the years it was under pressure, it could spend more on development and wasn't under a CFD/tunnel limit. McLaren, AM and Ferrari might have less recent operational experience with winning races, but that doesn't mean they can't optimise their 2023 designs while Merc are starting from scratch.

I want McLaren so badly to be the one challenging RB. I don't mind Mercedes not winning or competing at the top for 1-2 more years, and I'm kinda sick of Ferrari always bottling it. I know that if McLaren is fighting at the beginning they won't do much better than Ferrari in 2017,18 and 22 but it will be refreshing to have McLaren up there for once. Obviously that Lando is my favourite driver and McLaren my favourite team is the reason I wish this happens, but tbh, I think that's the opinion quite a few F1 fans have probably.

While RB and Mercedes are working on 2024 car, Ferrari and McLaren are still upgrading 23' car. It's obvious that they aren't coming for RB next year.

From those years of blaming everything on Honda - they've really overhauled the organisation.
Hopefully we can look at the malaise years, as the buildup leading to next golden era
