- Brawn GP is a team that defied all odds to achieve unprecedented success in the world of Formula 1, forever changing the sport. It emerged from the brink of collapse to clinch both the Drivers' and Constructors' Championships in their debut year-a feat unmatched in F1 history. Discover how this underdog team, led by Ross Brawn, made strategic decisions that catapulted them to the pinnacle of motorsport success in 2009.
I'll also look at the aftermath-how Brawn GP's brief but bright flame was extinguished as the team was sold and eventually transformed into Mercedes, a team that would go on to dominate the sport for years.

I can't imagine the fact that I had the opportunity to buy an f1 team back in 2008
When envy towards a dominating team takes full power... all that can me made is cry to FIA like a crybaby
you can "buy" the team, but basically you took over honda's responsibility of running the team including the workers' wages and the team's debt
They were given money by Honda to run the team, around $110 Million USD, along with the factory and equipment. This was enough to at least (1) have their new car compete for 1 season and (2) have enough time to look for an official buyer (What now is Mercedes AMG). The $1 is essentially just symbolism of them buying the team; and this wasn't the first time this happened (Ford/Jaguar-Redbull on 2004).
What's interesting with their setup though is that the team on Honda and Brawn was essentially the same people, same drivers, and the Honda cars. Even when Merc bought the team, Brawn (the guy, the team principal) was their principal until 2013.
I cant believe i was born that year.
And then taken on massive debt😂😂😂😂
Crazy how they started with zero sponsors too and no development budget. Imagine a team today going through an entire season with no budget to deliver any upgrades?
That was the privateers from the 90's and 00's my breda. Basic cars, questionable sponsors, not the best drivers, shoe string budget. With the format of nowadays, it will never happen again. The last real small teams came in the 2010-2016 period, and only one of em made it past the V8 era before running out of luck.
Unfortunately the FIA wouldn't even let somebody attempt it now. Hell you got established racing teams backed by companies like Audi or GM that have trouble getting in the door.
@@poeticalvision Good point, when you look how Andretti was turned down
Imagine if honda never left and continued to develop the car with that pace
@@victordinev5229 And with Honda engines, it would be like a love-child of 2023 Redbull and 2021 Merc; a monster in both aero and power.
Cool to see Keanu Reaves interviewing F1 guys.
where are those coming from ? A documentary ?

Barrichello is not given credit enough for 2009 Brawn GP championship. He helped develop the car as he was one of the best drivers to know how to tune the car to be a beast.
The one and only f1 team have 100% win rate
the story of brawn gp is up there as one of the best in the sports history
In sporting history* there you go ;) 👍

I always liked Jenson. A great driver and likeable guy.
imagine if Drive to Survive was around back in 2009!!!
DONT SAY THAT IM GONNA GET NIGHTMARES😂
S1-S3 maybe not, it has gotten a lot more factual since.
Glad that didn't happen as rather involved in F1 during that time....
this is literally "Drive to Survive"
@@alexelectricxhonestly I kinda hate it now that it’s become “factually correct” somewhat 🤷♂️ the drama was wayyyy more fun to watch 😂 lol 😝 owell
Ross Brawn is a legend for doing this which I believe he put everything he had into helping Jensen Button obtain a WDC
Jenson Button's dad died in 2014, when he was at Mclaren, wtf are you talking about?
@@TheDapperDog402 my mistake not sure how over the years I’ve combined the two events
I stand by what I say about Ross Brawn creating the team to get Jensen the WDC through
God dang the editing on this video is top tier; it genuinely gave me goosebumps a few times. I'd never heard of this story before, but to hear it told was simply incredible. I doubt we'll ever see something like that again any time soon.
So glad you liked it, mate 👌🏻I tried something new with the edit, and I'm happy it paid off ❤️
Weird they revealed the final standings so early, then went on to tell the story. I mean its not like we didn't already know.. but still. I wonder why they did it like that.
2009 was a tale of what if's. If the double diffuser was banned. Brawn GP was done, they had no backup plan.
Then we might never have Mercedes. Crazy
I've been a subscriber for the past 3 weeks, top of the F1 content providers for me! Keep em coming!
Means more than you might think! Thank you ❤️
OMG I hate when other teams complain about an innovation man I don’t get it they could just do it to their cars too bruh
I think this probably applies to Newey. I mean, he really did very well in other teams, even with Red Bull, though.
@@Box1-lf9hv facts he took redbull and Verstappen to victory
The complaints were there because the diffuser went against the racing philosofy of the 09 cars because of the loophole. And the teams didn't want to end up in a spending war just after a economic recession. Which eventually still happened of course and all the teams had to develop and spend tons of money. To then later on be for nothing as the blown diffusers still got banned.
Almost if the teams saw it coming when they decided to "complain".
Newey took Vettel to victory. Honda took Max to victory,
@@idontknow4449 fair I guess
They weren't complaining about innovation, they were complaining because it was "against the spirit of the regulations" so to speak. The intention of the rules was to not allow double diffusers, but the rules were poorly written which allowed them to happen anyway. The teams that didn't add them didn't miss the idea, they just were under the impression it was banned. The scandal with Toyota's rally team however long ago was a similar case, the only difference being that Toyota was suspended rather than their design being approved.
Modern rules have a section called "Spirit of the Regulations" which allows the rules to be enforced as intended even if the wording is bad or leaves loopholes.
I really enjoyed the 2009 season and was always a fan of Brawn's livery. I remember not being as aware of the behind the scenes details as I am now and just watched the races but it's wild the way that F1 teams will complain that something is illegal and it's basically code for "why didn't we think of that, can we get them to take it out?"
I cannot truly explain the emotions I experienced over this season. As a long-time Button fan, it was surreal. I couldn't believe he was winning races and leading the championships, and then I couldn't believe he wasn't winning races and his lead was shrinking. But that final lap of Brazil when I realised he was gonna be the F1 World Champion. Honestly, it was one of the best moments of my life.
"We are the champions my friends" 🥹 still gets me in my feels
I missed the 2009 season as I joined the army in March and was in basic and airborne then ranger school but it is one of the most iconic seasons of all time
Nothing really brightens up may day than a DailyFuelUp video... I have to admit your voice is a great asset man❤❤
Being a new F1 fan, I've learnt a lot about the history and how the whole thing runs...
Good good job.
Thanks a lot, mate! It makes me so happy to read a comment like this after spending so much time making this video ❤️
It's and AI voice...
@@tomlion0116 even if so, nice choice.
the very sudden cuts between chapters is a bit jarring. a smoother transition would be nice
Big myth that it was all the diffuser when f1 engineers have stated the front wing was just as important. And 2 other teams had the ebd but not nearly as fast. Honda spent a ton on development.
you deserve more subs! great video!
Everybody knows other teams always claim a car is illegal when they didn't think of something first
Too bad they stayed for only 1 season... Otherwise Button would have multiple WDC tittles instead of Vettel.
Not really. Brawn had no money to develop the car. You can see in 2010. Mercedes bought the team and won only a select few races from 2010-2013 with that rule regulation. RBR, Ferrari, McLaren were miles ahead in development.
Nope. They were already struggling in their first year.
No they had to sell they run out of money
You are so far off base bro. They struggled because they had no money in the second half of the season. Its how Red Bull closed the gap. You think that another full season money would just appear? Did you even watch the video? 😂
Well Done, Gr8 Video! Thank You For The Info. Well Done All The Team, RB & JB As Driver's, WORLD CHAMPION BABY!!!!!!!!
You could also go read the actual unedited story yourself, just one example copy/pasted.
The budget that Brawn GP is working on is another significant factor. When Ross Brawn bought the team he was given 100 million pounds by Honda to keep the team alive for the 2009 season.
100 million pounds is the amount that Honda would have had to fork out, in order to close down the factory, and make all the staff (over 700 of them) redundant. This would obviously have made Honda look very bad, so decided that giving the same sum to Ross to keep the team alive was better for their reputation.
Brawn GP also received an advanced commercial payment from FOM boss Bernie Ecclestone. That makes a total of 140 million pounds, which for one season is a decent and workable budget. In 2007 the top spending teams spent in the region of 200 million pounds just to give a comparison.
They owned the season. Ross Braun is a great leader and he possesses a multitude of qualities and talent
It's messed up that Andretti wants to join and there's stories like this.
Just let them join.
Andretti is a team building from the ground up. Brawn GP was the BAR team simply rebranded.
@@steve4880not a high bar considering they were trash before 09

To be fair, including conditions like being born to extremely wealthy parents, parents who are influential in the F1, or just so happening to be in the favors of very wealthy sponsors, greatly improve your odds. Looking at the subset of kids to median-income parents, and not being in one of the other 2 catagories, your chance is basically 0. Being in the other groups and having your sponsor/parent dedicated to get you into F1 will give you some pretty good odds. F1 is basically for the rich, not really the talented, I'm sure there would be plenty talented kids who just weren't rich enough to get a high-end go-kart to prove their talent at first, or had parent who didn't risk their whole financial stability while already being median-income in a rich country to ensure a career.
Super Video super inspiring
also Lotus sold their team to renault for 1 pound
Keanu Reeves doing F1 interviews?
The Most Dominating Racing Team and Driver combination ( if you aren't just looking at F1) has to be Jim Clarke and Lotus, He raced everything at the same time F1, F2 ,Touring cars, Formula Tasman in Australia, F3 and others that I can't Remember off the top of my head All in the same season,

He looks alike, but no. interviewer's name is actually John Wick
I remember going to the race in Melbourne thinking who the hell are these guys 😂😂😂 awesome story
Great vid mate, you forgot the new engine from Mercedes.
Barricello is the best team mate in history. He helped Micheal and I think his "puncture" was an unselfish team play for the championship 😉
Barricello could've won a lot more races I think ❤
Brilliant video
Thanks mate ❤️

Yes
Jordan, which is now Red Bull, was also bought for one pond sterling from Ford.
wow incredible keep it up
They really just said. This is a side quest won and left. LOL legendary
Red Bull complaining when they’re getting smoked. Then when they’re ahead nothing is wrong 😂
I love how some guy went why have one when we can have two
Not to forget, they had a total of 3 chassis for the whole season.
All it needed was 2 chassis damaging crashes and they would have been down to a one driver team.
Disney have called, they want their documentary back.
Was a fantastic story and one of the best in motorsports history, bonus points for sticking it to the "big boys" and getting them to eat crow!
Could you imagine that Honda stayed in F1 for 2009. And would have continued onward. Things would have panned out much different for all teams. There wouldn't have been a Mercedes factory team. Schumacher might never return back to the sport after his retirement. McLaren would have won all 8 constructor championships with Mercedes from 2014 onward. Hamilton would have stayed with McLaren. Red Bull might not have gotten the Honda engine.
Such a good video
Thanks mate, I tried a new editing style, and I’m happy to hear it paid off! ❤️
Let's be honest, this was Honda, but with another name.
If you remove all the "more on that later" comments, this video would be a whole minute shorter
i think they should have complained the same way they did to brawn to red bull 2023 because of the dominance
Thanks!

@DailyFuelUp absolutely, this is quality production and I plan to play this video when my friends visit for some drinks and BBQ. This is the type of content I want to show them to peak interest. Cheers!
This story feels like it was 40 years ago 😂
Where can I find the interviews by Keanu Reeves?
The editing could have been better. You kept cutting to black too many times for too long. It feels so awkward to watch.
8:31 KIANU REEVES?!?!?!
its funny how Honda always seem to pull out of F1 just as everything goes good, both with Brawn and Red Bull
With that metric, we can say Pastor Maldonado never lose from pole :v
I remember his dad was so happy I think when his dad died he was not the same
I love seeing underdogs winning
We know. We remember.
9:15 wtf??? John wick???

Just here to say that the thumbnail is completely wrong but ok
In October 2008 I emailed Mattel suggesting they sponsor the Honda F1 team, I didn't get a reply. But just imagine if they had and Hot Wheels were formula 1 world champions. A toy company beating Ferrari on the track.
B.a.r not Bar 😂
I don't know about the dominating team/driver. But I'll give you A decade of the most memorable drivers for me at least mainly because it was when I was introduced to F1. The 90's, I could name drop but that is too much on the nose of my point. Go look for yourself and compare.
Can I have my first pit?
Honda does what it always does. Honda has an incredibly short attention span.
Yes, developes tragically 2 years then dominates with branding of other companies over their creation
1 pound was the price
The front wing also had a lot to do with their success.
Wow.
What an incredibly misleading thumbnail
at the 1:56 mark of this vid, barely one minute into this 18 min. vid, there was an AD (COMMERCIAL). ARE YOU KIDDING???? less than two minutes in???? I always say "nice vid" or :good edits" but this gets a zero if I can't watch for more than 2 minutes before TWO ADS come up. next ad break? you guessed it; 3:58 or two minutes .So my suggestion to friends; don't bother to watch a vid by DailyFuelUp unless you have double the amount of time listed and love being interrupted every minute and a half for ads with items you don't want and will never use. not me.
Most valuable 1 pound coin on earth imagine getting your hands on that along with its provenance
Honda decided to pull the plug in the wrong time AGAIN
Aston gonna win WCC when Honda leaves
And in the end Honda ended Mercedes/Brawn era, and they continue dominate it, wonder if honda guy still has that coin that who knows brought them where they are now
