McLaren’s surprise major F1 2022 upgrade package explained

- McLaren’s having a tough time in 2022, and its prospects of improving didn’t seem promising when McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl said after June’s Canadian Grand Prix that there were no plans for any major upgrades.
And yet, at the French Grand Prix the McLaren MCL36 appeared with a pretty substantial upgrade package.
The key changes are those to the floor and sidepods, and helped Lando Norris qualify fifth at Paul Ricard before finishing seventh in the race.
So let’s take a closer look at exactly what has changed and the impact on performance - as well as explaining why McLaren introduced an upgrade that it denied was in the pipeline.

Even as a Ferrari fan, I just wanna see Lando back in the main fights, it's sad to see McLaren drop down since last year

Why would that be sad? It's not like last year they were a good team compared to others.
All of their few very good results came out of pure luck and from the main competitors being out of the race.
It's not like they've achieved that level legit or consistently and were a top team.
McLaren has been sucking pretty bad if compared to its history since more than 10 years now. They are simply a mid filed contender. Nothing more.
And even going back a lot of years ago, their car was good only cause of copying Ferrari stuff out.
It's not like they've achieved any remarkable result at the end of the season with their own knowledge alone less than a couple decades ago.

They are solidly on the downward slippery slope that Williams found themselves on. People forget that Williams was the best team for many years.

Glad they're not sitting still and trying to improve the car. Honestly had higher hopes for this year, it's been a bit frustrating. Really think Lando could be magic in the right car.

Lando talked about this on the post race interview. He said there are upgrades on the pipeline which will be applied to the car, but they're not developing newer ones for the year. So most likely we'll see a couple of upgrades in the next months and then as the season is ending, the car will stay the same.
@@apoxalypsewhen Not necessarily, the driver has to be a good fit for the car and vice versa. For example, Ricciardo is an undeniably capable driver, but he can't get dialed in to the McLaren so he can't get everything out of the car.

Its funny that people always compare the midfield teams to mercedes in quali (notorious weak point for merc), but by the end of the race the best of the rest was something around 30 seconds behind the front pack, with the help of the safety car halfway through the race. It really just shows how mind blowingly ahead the top teams are.
Yes. These days I had someone tell me it's funny that WEC runs different category cars in the same race, and how F1 having 20 cars of the same "type" is awesome. But in practice we really have a "LMP1" category within the field, the three top teams are so far ahead, the others can only "visit" them like the occasional LMP2 overtaking a LMP1 car at the start of a race or when some of them DNF...

How Mclaren started the year so far behind is incredible, Why did they focus on 3rd last year, when Ferrari weren't even bothered.
I doubt that had too much bearing on the peak performance of the '22 car, using an outdated wind tunnel & simulator are probably McLaren's biggest limitation, we'll find out soon enough when their new facilities come online.
Perhaps they knew maintaining that form into the next season would have been an almighty/nigh impossible challenge from the looks of things, perhaps they had a point. I mean look at Stroll Martin, Williams and AT, they all switched things up mid season and produced relatively mediocre machinery compared to even their previous form.

Mercedes is now officially the only team with "small sidepods" after McLaren and Williams switched to more redbull/Ferrari type sidepods, it's gonna be interesting to see how they develop
Think it will be more so of a case of if they change their philosophy next year.
I feel like it'll be either go spectacular for Mercedes, or spectacularly wrong for them, as the teams push in both directions. Meaning, we'll either get another run of Merc dominance, or Merc falling year-by-year behind
Considering all the teams that switched to the big sidepods saw an increase in performance but nothing dramatic to the effect of actually catching the top 3, I imagine Mercedes’ will stay with the sidepod configuration, although it’ll be tweaked I imagine. So much wind tunnel time and money was probably spent fine tuning the new cooling requirements and sidepod configuration that they’ve barely added performance. We saw at the beginning of the year how simple their floor was. Now we are finally seeing them flex their aero muscle and they are slowly catching the top teams. Reportedly a huge upgrade is coming to Hungary, and with the flexing floor TD coming in spa, I imagine Mercedes will be a lot closer. Then they’ll be able to use their wind tunnel time to actually gain performance rather than fix bouncing problems. There’s already some reports that merc has found 40% more downforce for next year

technically Mercedes already has a "normal" side pod design - thats what they started teh season with before promptly shifting to the "zero pod" design. I suspect that after this season, we could fully see them return to what looking like a more normalized side pod design.

Thanks for that. I’m a big Lando fan and have been frustrated at the car’s lack of pace this season. Lando does seem upbeat though so maybe good times are yet possible this year.

It's been a while since I was involved in this kind of aero but I would explain the tradeoff between inwash v downwash as:
Inwash is less draggy at higher speeds, so allows you to theoretically run with more rear downforce. However it's less consistent through corners when the "off" side is inwashing less efficiently, you also get airflow "snapping" back on at corner exit
Downwash is far more consistent across corners because the top flow is more energised so stays attached better, the tradeoff is at higher speeds it will probably max out quicker than the inwash concept
redbull has downwash but they have very little drag or?

Uhh mclarens where never small but all teams have seen from RBR the downwash effect from top of sidepods is a benefit

Well the inlets are not small actually they are just vertical which allows them to make the sidepods super slim
I just love this channel, answers all of my questions and gives a behind the scenes view to a dilemma that teams have been dealing with all year so bravo to that. 👍 As far as Mclaren goes, it’s been an uphill battle and they’re showing their determination by bringing upgrades, but maybe they should try to run a lower downforce wing/setup like Red Bull has, since they’re running a downwash spec.
The tweaks appered to suit ricciardos style more which is intriguing

Fundamentally, I think the car has problems of balance - it has a lazy front end and a stiff back end. If you have a driver that excels at late braking overtakes and high minimum speeds, it’s pretty much the worst balance you could design. Can’t late brake because the front end gets unsettled and can’t maintain high cornering speed because it understeers like crazy.
100% they"ve only continued to take that route because Lando thrives in it but with that design theory i just dont think it could every be a consistent race winning car, if they designed a car that daniel thrives in it would be a consistent race winner

The wildest thing about mclaren this season was how good they looked in testing they really looked like a team that had nailed the new regulations but once the season started they ran into all the same problems other teams had besides RB and Ferrari.
They looked great in the first test but the second test they had loads of problems with the brake ducts causing the brakes to overheat. They then spent the first few races trying to fix the problem then understand their car. They have been playing catch up ever since.
I don't think it's fair to say they ran into the same problems as everyone else. Generally they haven't been struggling with proposing much. They just lost so much time in the second test and that screwed them a lot
@@benfulford3943 they haven’t had the same extreme porposing issues as Mercedes’ but they def had pretty much no porposing in testing and then to start the season had a healthy amount that was affecting their pace. I specifically remember them being singled out as the team who solved porposing in testing because of their floor design.
@@clemfandango2930 I don't remember mclaren ever really suffering from porpoising. It wasn't non existent but they didn't have a big problem and norris / Ricciardo have been on record talking about it not affecting them much. Although Ricciardo did talk about suffering from bouncing at Baku but that is a different phenomena from the porpoising

I've heard that AM's first car was a 'minor' evolution of the FIA Mole car so its performance would probably be around that car.

Does anyone else believe mclaren are the most disappointing team this season, a full 100 points behind last year.

Hungry isn't the problemz they should be fast there as there are no long straights.
Problem is they didn't updated the sidepod intake following RB concept...which has a evident drag reduction effect. Something much needed if they want to get a better race pace in the following races.

To get 4th in the constructors McLaren need a better driver than Riciardo. He's just not good enough and I really don't see how they can keep him next year.
I think this package is perfect for Hungary considering it is a high downforce track. The French GP was just a test to learn it, to maxmize points in Hungary. Also while there was no mention of a decrease of drag, I think the Mclaren may have decreased drag somewhere because they qualified extremely well at a track that is simply multiple straights stuck together
This upgrade was probably to test an RB style car for 2023. So they needed to place it on the car this year to collect data for next season.
Visually, it looks like they attached the mid-sidepod of the Ferrari to the back side pod of the Red Bull.
I wonder how EA is going to handle teams changing visible aero designs midway through the season. Probably just going to put it off until next year.
Um, it's EA, for sure it will be paid DLC.
He just said there were no plans for an upgrade, that doesn't mean the same thing as there will be no upgrades.
Also McLaren will need to try some things to decide on a direction for next years car, so it will pay for itself in the long run anyway.

Hey everyone. As a german in his mid 30s (or approaching 40 to be fair) I was obiously a big schumi fan. I still am and I support mick as well. But there has always been this rivalry between mclaren and the teams schumi was driving for. But now I really hope they can fight for titles again. Lando is a big factor as well. I like him very much, he is a troll and goofy funny dude but also a gentleman racer. I think he deserves to be a champion one day.
It seems as though they have also been inspired by red bull but aren’t using tracing paper like Green Bull.

No it focuses on downforce in the rear/Coke bottle section, personally it looks like mclaren doesn’t care if riccardo completely fails, get this final year of contract done with, then get rid. Shame because he is a fast and championship contending driver, just not in the mclaren

This update is to segregate the high pressure air away from the low pressure floor edge.
Lando already explained there's no more future upgrades to be made because it is already done but yet to implement it to the car in the following races

@@4rdF1Hunny It will be a Ferrari circuit - I’m pretty sure Hungaroring is a high downforce circuit and plus there is only 1 long straight for Red Bull to really benefit.

The Hungaroring doesn't have very long straights, so all that Honda power would go to waste, and it would seem to favor the Ferraris, at least until one of them crashes.
Mercedes is making more gains than the rest. their pace is going up in last 3 races while other mid-packers like McLaren are fumbling around. McL could have started out w/ downwash but made a judgement error on the 1st pod incarnation. they already had the down wash design they will use now
Is a "major" upgrade one with high visual changes or one with high performance changes ? This is a surprise if you are talking about visual, but F1 is about performance

Riccardo's poor performance in 2021 cost McLaren third in the manufacturers Championship. This year his poor performance is going to cost them fourth to Alpine. McLaren need a better second driver if they want to stand a chance of finishing fourth this year. Instead of spending money on the cars they might do better to buy Ricciardo out of his contract if they can't fire him for non performance. They will get the car figured out but in a year and a half they have not been able to get the Aussie to sparkle.
