They may complain that Puss in Boots did not win, but come on people, This Oscar mainly deserved it for Pinocchio by Guillermo Del Toro, and not only because it is Guillermo Del Toro or from Netflix, but because Del Toro gave him this movie with a lot of dedication and heart with the help of stop motion, and that had to wait a long time for it to finally be worth all that this Oscar deserved.
We love you Guillermo Del Toro and in your face Disney and Bob Chapek, animation is not a genre, it is a medium and it is cinema.

RIP Mark Gustafson. He passed away a year after receiving this award
I encourage all of you who don't know who this guy is to take a dive into his stop motion work!
He was part worked at the claymation/stop-motion studio (Will Vinton Studios) that made the process of animation hit the mainstream in the mid-80s and well into the 90s in the United States
They did hundreds of claymation commercials (most famous of which featuring the California Raisins or the Noid for Dominos)
Another fun fact: if any of you love the films of Laika Studios, Will Vinton Studios is the same studio! They fell on financial hard times and eventually bought out and renamed Laika.

Honestly as much as i love puss in boots i am very glad pinocchio won instead so mark gustafson can have his oscar before dying. I understand the some criticism of pinocchio and the last wish is more on focus but idk i still prefer pinocchio more. It was Del Toro's passion project to give animation some respect and wouldn't be without mark's help. Rest in peace 🙏🙏🥲

Guillermo del Toro's masterful artistry and the magical storytelling he was known for are both on display in Pinocchio. The film layers onto the classic fairy tale thicker themes about father-son relationships, the meaning of life, religious zeal, and the absurdities of war and authoritarian rule.
