"I won't be a burden anymore" fucking HURT. Seeing the shift from pinocchio being a little brat to just a little boy who wants to be loved makes it tug at the heartstrings more. Del Toro just really knocked it out of the park in so many ways.

I loved that Pinocchio was never portrayed as bratty or even a bad kid, he was just hyperactive, innocent and curious about everything just like kids are.

One of my favorite parts from Del Toro's Pinocchio was when he went to church against his father's wishes and when people saw him, a living puppet, they thought he was a demon, an abomination. Which was ironic since the Blue Fairy character who brought him to life called herself "a guardian" or "messanger" hinting that she was an Angel or something like it. Then later when his father finished building the crucifix, Pinocchio pointed out that it was made out of wood and asked why people loved he Jesus crucifix, but hated him because he didn't know the context. There were so many layers to it with war and religion. Del Toro is a genius.

One of the geatest changes in Del Toro's version was changing Pleasure Island to a youth military camp. It really makes the line "They don't come back as boys." much more dark and real. @@georgeeastwood6930 I don't really know cause I wasn't there, but I've studied it in school and I've heard the stories of my grandma and the elders that remember that period, and I found a lot of similarities:
      1) The way Candelwick's father is represented is very accurate, he really looks like a fascist hierarch and also the thing he said about being a "good model of italian virility" is pretty on point.
Also the part in the church when Candelwick's dad asks Pinocchio "who controls you, wooden boy?" and Pinocchio replies "who controls YOU!", that line is gold. Considering the hyper-militarized culture of fascist Italy, the ministery of education pushed very much the idea of taking orders from the ones above you without questioning or thinking about why are you doing it, or if it's right. "if the boss tells you to do something, you just do it, he knows better after all" kinda like a puppet with no free wil.
      2) The child military camp in wich Pinocchio and Candlewick are trained was a real thing, they were called "balilla camps", the fashist government really pushed the narrative of militarizing citizens since childhood, there's also a similar camp rapresented in "Jojo Rabbit".
The part where they sing and dance to teach the idea of war as a game through the use of songs and theatrical performances for children about bringing glory to Italy is also correct.
      4) The way Mussolini is rapresented is hilarious but pretty accurate, his facial expressions and poses in particular, if you look at footages of his speeches from that time you will see that.

It covers topics I never really would have thought an animated film would take on, and it did it so astonishingly well. You're given these characters with imperfections in a corrupt society and through the characters imperfections you are able to feel for them and relate to them on a much deeper level than you might with characters in other films. I agree with everything. Del Toro worked for 15 years in this, because he wanted to do what he wanted to do, the best way possible. So it was hard for him to get enough budget and it almost got scrapped until netflix appeared. So with all the budget he needed he made the piece of art not only he wanted to do, but the one pinocchio we didnt know we needed. So glad it could came to life, its really unique and succeeds in every aspect it want to succeed. Disney has enough budget to make literally anything they want, yet they seem just to want more, all those things you said about them trying so hard to make references the public can understand and such is basically fanservice. They want to sell, they dont put a heart in it because it seems like the people in charge just dont have one. Some people say that in marvel they cared lately more about quantity over quality. A lot of movies that have disney behind may have a lot of nice cgi (or maybe not, maybe in cgi they are starting to settle with less) or beautiful 3d worlds, but their stories are hella predictable. Repeating patterns, playing safe, or just doing the bare minimum because they know that if it has disney in it people will take it as a quality mark. Del Toro did what his heart told him, along with the professionals that took part in the journey of making Pinocchio, and its proof that, with enough budget and enough love for what you do, you can achieve wonderful things to share with the world.

You got it exactly right about the "humor" in the Disney version and nobody talks about it with del Toro's. Not only did del Toro make an emotionally better movie, his version is also hilarious at parts. Disney tried to go for their, now typical, dumb reference humor. When I first saw the characters "heil" in del Toro's I laughed out loud. When Geppetto walks up to the sailor on the dock and you hear the tink of a mine in the water it was hilarious. And Tom Kinney as Mussolini was so funny. The reason all of those things were funny is because they were presented normally and frankly. Disney tries so hard to be "funny" that they forget what's actually humorous.

As someone who grew up with the book, I adored how del Toro incorporated so many elements of the original story, while giving them his own personal interpretation! The schoolbook, the Cat and the Fox, the black rabbits, the Land of Toys…
I find it good that you mentioned how to depict Pinocchio in a live-action movie, because there have already been many live-action adaptations that dealed in many different ways with this problem: most just have the actor of Pinocchio in some make-up and his iconic clothes; some, like the 1996 "the adventures of Pinocchio" or the 1967 "Turlis Abenteuer" used a real puppet; and then there's the 1972 miniseries by Luigi Comencini, which came up with this great workaround: since in the original tale Pinocchio starts off as a living piece of wood, we have him be that here too, and use a puppet for the beginning. then the Fairy enters the picture and turns him into a real boy (with a real child actor), on the condition that he behaves. so anytime he misbehaves, the puppet comes back. And at the end of the story, to show that Pinocchio is now permanently a real child, we see him alongside his old wooden body!

At 9:46, I want to point out that the last time Disney really cared about their movies was Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The animation director, Richard Williams only worked on the film to be able to create his passion piece “The Thief and The Cobbler”. Williams worked on the movie for 29 years, I believe. He started in 1964. Some animators at Disney worked on the film, and after a while, Disney, under the company MiraMax bought the rights to TTATC. They put a new director on it, while working on Aladdin. Disney stole essentially the whole plot and characters from TTATC, and put it on Aladdin. Princess Jasmine is based off of Princess Yum-Yum, Aladdin is based off of Tack the cobbler, even Jafar and his bird were stolen! The original villains name was ZigZag, he had a pet vulture and plotted to marry Yum-Yum for the throne. There’s a version of the genie, the witch, too. Even the Sultans are similar! The movie was never finished, and only released after the director was changed and Disney tried to have it released as soon as possible after Aladdin. They completely changed everything about the movie, and changed the name to Arabian Knight. On the DVD cover, they even put Princess Yum-Yum and Tack on a magic carpet to make it seem like a cheap knock-off of Aladdin. It makes me sad to see Disney only be a company for money, and not making any real story of themselves. Most, if not all of their original movies are not their original stories. They were stolen from folktales or myths, mainly from the Brothers Grimm. Disney never even truly gave credit, and calls their princesses “Disney Princesses” though they didn’t create them. The worst part about The Thief and The Cobbler is that Richard Williams died in 2019, so we’ll never truly see what he intended the movie to be like. There is a version called the Recobbled Cut here on youtube which is as close as it can be to the original story. It was made by Garrett Gilchrist. I’d like to mention originally the thief and Tack were supposed to be mute, too but Disney made them speak and added some horrible musical numbers. I wish that the majority of Disney’s most famous movies weren’t stolen, but I guess not all wishes are meant to be true.

I absolutely agree with you. I think Disney's live action version of Pinocchio is a sugar-coated, bubble wrapped, half-hearted first draft of the beautiful, emotionally deep, stunningly animated story that Guillermo del Toro gave us with the same characters. You can ACTUALLY SEE the tears in Geppetto's eyes when he is weeping for his lost sons. You FEEL his grief and his pain in those moments. I wept for him, I felt so bad. The animation was stunning. The songs were heartfelt and sweet. And I actually REALLY ENJOYED the fact that (unlike any other version of Pinocchio I have seen) this one actually lets us see Geppetto with his first son and how deep and strong that bond is...so when he is lost, we also feel that loss because we have become emotionally attached to the character. Its not just mumbled at us with no context for the emotion. I liked how they chose to do the ending. It almost feels like the two sons were entwined in a way. Geppetto had his beloved Carlo and we see the beautiful bond they share and how Carlo is helping his Papa create the Crucifix in the church and it is Carlo who finds the perfect pine cone to plant as a new tree, so that he can follow in his father's footsteps as a woodcarver. But then, when Carlo dies, Geppetto plants the pinecone on his son's grave and the tree grows, but Geppetto's grief causes him to stop building the Crucifix....but then, when Pinocchio comes to Geppetto, he comes from the tree that was made by Carlo's special pinecone. Pinocchio helps his papa to finish the Crucifix that he started with his first son.

Every scene had a purpose, which drew towards deep messages at the conclusion. Meanwhile, Disney is all about two things these days: nostalgia and superheroes! Sure to a degree all films/shows/media exists to also make money, but passion can still guide a project that isn’t only looking at profit. Disney is fully capable of making great films or even great Pinocchio films, they just chose not to really bother with it because they are trying to rake in cash while doing the least amount of work and effort. Because quite frankly you can’t tell me that the same studio that did the Cinderella remake (which was actually very good) isn’t capable of mustering up a half way decent and watchable film of their classics. I saw both. The Disney's Pinocchio was so difficult to watch. My daughter and I could not get over the fact that they added a CGI cat! Like, why? And then you have Guillermo del Toro, who, in my opinion, is one of the best directors of our generation. He puts his heart and soul in everything he touches, and you can see it. His version of Pinocchio was so beautiful and with so much story. He's so passionate about his work, but as you mentioned, Disney is an assembly line machine that just keep reproducing bad product trying to appeal to nostalgia.

Looking at Disney's Pinocchio my mind went straight to Labyrinth, the 80's movie with David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly, it's a well known phenomenon that when perceiving bad media the brain will try to protect itself by remembering good media XD That movie had CGI but mostly used physical puppets made by the Henson company and they are really life-like because people took care animating each part of the puppets, not just their bodies but also things like mouths and eyelids. The most used puppet is that movie is for the character Hoggle and it took FOUR people plus an actor inside the puppet to manipulate him cause he's so detailed.

Guillermo Del Toro's Pinnochio is a masterpiece. As far as I'm concerned, it's the best version of the story(including the 1940 Disney film, which was also brilliant). I rank this animated film right up there with "The Iron Giant" and "Coraline" for its art design, visuals and for the serious take on mature themes in a kids film.

For me the worst part of the Disney remake is that it completely throws away the story of free will, redemption and humanity that the original animated one is about. The new one turns Pinocchio into a victim of circumstance who just goes along with things happening to him. He faces no consequences for his decisions and therefore doesn’t learn anything. That makes him less human. Him becoming human through his personal growth, actions and development of his conscience is supposed to be the point of the Pinocchio story. Not only is the movie cringeworthy to watch, but it doesn’t inspire new viewers with any moral lesson. In fact it might leave a negative impact on impressionable viewers.

Another thing is too is the comparison between monstro's of both movies, they are also both night and day. Del Toro cast the monster closer in resemblance to the Dogfish from the original book and yet it also reminds me of monstro from the Disney animation, a very large, mutated whale, but in the Disney plus version, they made monstro look just like a plain generic mutated kaiju rip off, just throwing the designs of a humpback whale, a blue whale, a barracuda, a Kraken, a great white shark, and a bony fish. Blended that all together, and say, "here you go, here's your generic make-believe", instead of trying to make it look like something that could exist. Just lacking in originality and laziness to capitalize on nostalgia while Del Toro actually makes a monster look like a creature that resembles a whale rather than some generic make-believe we repeatedly see. Just my further thoughts on the matter.

It's actually really interesting how many plot points the two adaptations share, but GdT's has enough more changes to make those points actually work to build a cohesive story with an actual point.

I didn’t want to like Del Toro’s (Netflix) version, but the whole family loved it, myself included. Del Toro’s was dark and dealt so well with loss and grief. There was so much emotion there, we laughed and almost cried 💖

I had such a different feeling watching this movie, I was taken in, I felt the emotions it wanted me to feel and it was truly beautiful. Whereas the Disney one had so many moments and choices that were just nonsensical. And don’t even get me started on the jokes. And I didn’t even hated it per se, but like you could almost feel the people who made it going like “yeah that makes no sense but who cares they’re gonna eat it up cuz we’re Disney” like the fact Pinocchio was already aware of what’s good and evil, missing the entire point of the character.
This version however felt more real and not just because of the stop motion. You got and understood everybody’s motive and reasoning, and their choices were coherent and based.
I just wish modern Disney cared about their IPs enough to treat them with respect and letting authors remake their movies instead of just using them as nostalgia cash grabs

Another commentator mentioned that to him the clock scene was the most iconic scene of Pinocchio how each clock was so beautifully crafted and animated showing how much love went into the original film. There was actual heart and emotion. In the remake it was replaced by product placement which was a completely unintentional reflection of what has happened to Disney. What was once filled with heart and brought it's viewer magical and original joy has been replaced with dull and soulless cash grabs that can no longer write a beautiful original story. (Please don't Encanto as a contradiction to this statement)

I was lucky enough to see Deltoro’s Pinocchio early in a small theater. I’m so glad I got to pay actual money to see this movie. It deserves a wide release. Everyone should see it. I would gladly go see it in theaters again. The entire thing wasn’t afraid to use certain imagery and parallels to get across its point. It was beautiful, and it was a fresh interpretation of these beloved characters. And the part when Pinocchio first and Ghepetto first meet was simply 👌. This film made me laugh and cry. It was fantastic, and in my opinion a true classic that i genuinely think will hold up for generations. Bravo.
I also saw the Disney live action remake. It’s hands down the worst out of the live actions to come out, by far. There’s nothing of value. It wasn’t even good for a laugh, which my friends and I originally tuned it on for. Was this fair? Perhaps not at first, but considering the way the movie turned out it was justified we had such low expectations. But I at least expected it to be on the “good cringe” spectrum. What I got was ugly, boring and completely washed of all the charm the original Disney Pinocchio carried. In certain places, it wasn’t even fully rendered properly, there was literal glitching in the renders that point to the fact that Disney did not pay or give the special effects team they outsourced enough time. (A common reason why films like these turn out so cheap and ugly looking.)
Yes, even that horrible Pinocchio movie with Polly Shore was better than Disney’s. At least I laughed at it, at least it left me with some thing fun and positive-the memes. There’s no memes of the live-action Pinochio. It was brought up exactly three times this year, when the crappy Polly Shore version came up, when itself released, and now in comparisons to a much more competent and compelling movie, making it look even more pitiful.

Like, the stopmotuon was AWESOME, the script was awesome, and a script that some of us can relate to, and shows different sad scenarios that would've happened in WW2. I LOVE Del Toro’s Pinocchio! I love the fact they made Geppetto a man versatile of many emotions (aside from joy), such as grief, fear, and despondency, and how his drive to creating Pinocchio from being broken about his lost son. The Disney Geppetto was seen as someone incapable of feeling nothing but love (aside from some sadness from his son) and it really didn’t have many dark plots to help drive the good. The only thing I liked really from the Disney live action version was Monstro’s design as a chimeric sea monster but that’s about it.

Walt Disney wanted to make wholesome family entertainment with every fairytale he certainly sugar-coated them! But his 1940 animated film of Pinocchio while certainly sugar-coated and a departure from the source material it's a masterpiece of animation and a real showcase of what hand-drawn animation can do! You know every filmmaker is going to approach these stories in their own way and Walt Disney had his own way!

I love how the Disney version has Pinocchio not really doing anything bad at the pleasure island. You know. the way he was supposed to? Be naughty so he would turn into a donkey as punishment and later learn his lesson and be a good boy? In stead in the Disney version he is basically kidnapped to pleasure island and he is just observing other boys do bad things. There is no arc. All the 'naughty' moments from the original have been removed because Pinocchio was never in the wrong. He didn't choose not to go to school. He was kicked out. He didn't choose to go to pleasure island. He was kidnapped and once there he didn't drink, didn't gamble, didn't participate in the vandalizing etc. Where. Is. The. ARC???

I would say that Disney’s Pinocchio turned out the way it was not for a lack of trying. The director was Robert Zemeckis, co-writer/director of Back to the Future. The CGI team are the same people Disney and the rest of the industry lean on for big movies like the Avengers, and while they become more reliant on green screens and adding things in post, the workload grows for these studios without an increase in time to work on these things. They are not unionized, so the big companies take advantage of them. All of these people work within the restrictions set by (once again) the big companies just to churn out profits and increase their margins in the short term, while the industry suffers in the long term.

For me it was how Disney made Pleasure island into something that didn't even have the same meaning as in the animated one. Guillermo Del toro's did the youth training camp with the paintball and confetti game and I think that perfectly encapsulates the something terrible and life threatening being turned into fun and ultimately seeing the consequences in a brutally unforgettable way. Like seriously Rootbeer, Disney?!

It’s especially sad when you compare both of Disney’s Pinocchio’s. The original had so much passion and love put into it so everyone could enjoy it, and it’s still one of my favourite movies to this day! But the new one just feels like “Here’s another cash-grab until we pump out another 3d animated merchandise maker that is either gonna be decent or absolutely suck (*cough* Encanto *cough* Strange world) and with song that are going to make you want to jump out the window” What happened Disney?

  • @sweetgirlyjk

Del Toro did such a good job at getting pinnochio to be nearly unbearable and bratty in the beginning, to actually growing to understand the weight of the world and how to navigate it. You slowly fell in love w him, and, as a parent, you relate to Japetto. His expectations, his feelings, especially if you’ve experienced childloss and then had children afterwards. He literally made me and my husband feel represented in this movie by showing how incredibly hard those feelings and frustrations hit, how hard you battle them to be the best person you can be for your children as well.
Honestly Del Toro’s makes me cry every time I watch it. It’s a work of art, and Del Toro (as per usual) obviously did his homework on the psychology behind a parent coping w childloss, and literally every other aspect of this movie.
