Hello, from Poland and Belarus! Thank you very much for this brilliant explanation! I was browsing through the Internet to find some good explanation of Future in the Past because the book from which I'm learning grammar doesn't explain it well. Moreover, it forced me to have more questions than I had before. So I started to looking for someone who could explain it to me on TH-cam. And no one did it as well as you did it. And now I understand why I couldn't get through what was written in the book. Because there ''would' in Future in the Past'' was explained wrong. There were only examples of conditions! And now I understand where and why it must be used in that or another way! I'm a little ashamed of my English so I write some comments almost never, but today I've just had to. Because I'm very thankful AND I WANTED TO SHOW IT TO YOU. And please do what you do as long as you can because you have a gift of explaining this all stuff! Thank you so much, you're a great man, Christian!
Yes!! Finally, I found and got how to use "would" in the past. It really started bothering me because just everywhere it was connected to the past and there was the only question 'Why??' Thank you, Christian for the explanation (:
Hi, I have been using this language with a very bad grammar since I was a young girl. I am going to practice my English just with you for 2 weeks to see the result. I will let you know. But I am 65, means I would never be able to have good English as you suggested. You are a good teacher.
Banh Dau Xanh (Green bean cake) is Vietnamese's traditional cusin. It's made from green bean, AKA French bean and some sort of flour and sugar of course. I like this kind of cake.
Awesome lesson!!! This is the way modal verbs should be explained. (one by one) Some of them are very confused, like..shall and should. Keep on the good and hard work. I really like your lessons. Thanks a lot!!!
I'm Vietnamese. when i listened you pronoun the word: "Rong Vang Minh Ngoc" very funny! maybe when you hear we speak English you feel so too. Plus: "Rong Vang Minh Ngoc" is kind of cake in Vietnam, it's delicious and popular at Vietnam.
I'm sure that my pronunciation was really terrible, but at least it made you laugh! What does the correct pronunciation sound like? I thought they were delicious, and I will eat lots more when I go to Vietnam one day!
Thanks for this class, Christian, i really needed a clear explanation about "Would" i'm going to watch it over again, for better understand! Have a nice day! 😊
Canguro English Yes, Would is not easy to understand, what confuses me the most about this word is when we use it in the past, tell me please if i'm correct, we use it in the past when we talk about something we usually did in the past, sort of habit and also when we talking about regrets or something that we shoud have done in the past, did i get it right? Please tell me. Thanks in advance! 😊
They are two different things. One is a past habit: "When I was young I would play football." and the other is a conditional to talk about a past regret: "If I had had time, I would have played more football." You can see the difference in the verbal tenses used. To talk about past habits we use 'would + bare infinitive', and to talk about a past regret we must use 'would have + participle'. I hope that helps!
Amazing class as always. No problem to understand it. But I have a question. I am not able to understad how the subtitles are generated. Not only in this class one can catch difference between what can be seen a heard. One small example: I hear 'subordinate clauses' and subtitles say 'subordinate courses' (time 8:23)
Hi! The subtitles are generated automatically by Google's AI, so they are not normally very accurate, depending on who is speaking and how fast they are speaking! To be 100% correct the subtitle have to be made manually, but I just don't have time!
sir please explain every verb which you teach either main verb or modal verb.....please explain in all tenses ....how the verbs change.....please request sir
Your last example was 'Christian wouldn't help Maria'. In some textbooks, it is also called 'refused to do something'. Am I right? I should say thank you because you're the number one teacher who explained that modal verbs don't have conjugations and the meaning depends on context. Therefore, I have to find meaning in a context. not in modal verb.
Thanks! Would and will as modals are a bit troublesome, but it is cool to use them, at least I feel so :) If I am not asking about past habits, how one should understand "Why would....?" or "What would...?" or "How would...? questions. Do they mean "Let's speculate about why or what or how"? And should we think of "would like", "would better" type combinations as being in the polite speech category?
It really depends on context. For example if you say: "Why would you eat pizza?" you could be asking somebody why they had a pizza habit in the past, or under what conditions they would eat pizza, or maybe they are being polite, or maybe they are talking about an imaginary hypothetical situation. Context is king!
Thanks for taking your time to answer! In the films sometimes I hear versions of "Why would someone do that?" when they are talking about a single event. And it is clear there should be a word instead of "did" there. You are very helpful.
Let's look at the two possibilities and their differences: 1) "Why did someone do that?" This is a question in the past simple about why somebody performed a specific action in the PAST. 2) "Why would someone do that?" This is a question where the person asking themselves NOW the possible reasons why somebody performed a past action. It's a subtle difference, but important. I hope that helps!
Yes, we say the same things that "The man's heart is through the stomach." My husband doesn't confess that it's true, but when I cook something good or make a cake, he is thrilled.
Thanks for the summary of how we use " would". It was good repetition. Only I had to watch again what is the difference between using "would or used to" as I have forgotten. I write here as perhaps not everybody knows that " would" is not used with stative verbs such as "love, be, understand, and feel" And as you write in your sentence there is always a time frame: "When I was 17...etc"
I've heard some Americans on TV use 'would' in a unique way when they describe some events which occurred in the past, some time standalone events and some times sequential events (but not repetitive or habitual) .... For example- This is a standalone event.. "He offered him advice. But he would not listen to him".... This is sequential.."He walked up to his room. Then he would knock on his doors. Then he would go on to fight with him"".... I don't know if I heard it wrong..But if these types of statements are genuinely used,is this just an Americanism or is it normal everywhere in the Anglophone countries?
Your first example is the usage of the 'future in the past'. At the time of the event the sentence would have been: "He is offering him advice. But he will not listen." Your second example is somebody describing a habit in the past. You could also say "...he used to knock on doors..." I hope that helps!
Thanks for your revert Christian.. Would it be equally fine to say "He is offered him advice. But he DIDN'T listen" ? The second example was a one-off sequential event, it was not a habit..Him knocking on the doors and fighting with him happened only once.So how do I frame that sequence correctly? :)
If it was a one-off event I can't think of any English dialects that use 'would'. British and especially Australian English is famous for using the present perfect to talk about one-off events when telling stories, but I've never heard people using 'would'. Your example of "...but he didn't listen..." is perfect!
1) Past Habbit:>>>>When I was a elementry Student I would Play In streets . 2) Conditional:>>>> If I celebrated My Brother's Birthday, He Would enjoy alot. 3) For Being Polite >>>> Would You pass it over to me ? 4) Future , When describing it with reference to past>>>>>She Said that You would remember these points✔️ You Would Not Remember These Points ✔️ You Would Remember these points✖️
I would like you repeat this video with others examples I'm sorry, but I am not understand exactly, and this subject is very good, principally the part about good manners. Thank you, teacher 🙏
Hallo teacher ,i wanna learn english because I'm new here in Australia but i don't like gramma what should i do ....i like Australian slang but very hard haw do you learn more thanks
Hi Daniella! You can't start to learn slang until you have the basics under control. But it's not necessary to study grammar either. If you don't like studying, just find somebody you can talk to who will CORRECT you when you are speaking. Pay them if you have to. Listen to their corrections and make changes. Hopefully that will work for you! Good luck!
Hello I' m till come from Viet Nam I don't see how do you have the cake? I want to talk by English many but I don't have environment to practice🙃so do you have some good idea for me about this problem ??😅😅😅 thanks bro!!!!
It's more difficult to practice speaking and listening when you don't have people to practice with, but you can always find a way. There are lots of tourists in Vietnam so try and find a way to talk to them. Or use the internet to find websites or Skype groups where you can practice with other people. Good luck and work hard!
Hi Krishna! No, it's not a sensitive question! I was born and raised in Australia but I have lived outside of Australia since 2000 so my accent is a little diluted now!

Is it better to say " If I was hungry..." or " If I were hungry ..." ? A friend of mine, who is American, told me: " This is an exception, but , for conditional, you have to say " If I were..."

5:36 Very interesting. It's kinda like "used to", with the exception that "used to" can be used to contrast with the present, right?
Great class! Thanks!
Hi, I have been using this language with a very bad grammar since I was a young girl. I am going to practice my English just with you for 2 weeks to see the result. I will let you know. But I am 65, means I would never be able to have good English as you suggested. You are a good teacher.

Thanks for this class, Christian, i really needed a clear explanation about "Would" i'm going to watch it over again, for better understand! Have a nice day! 😊

Daniella isho we can chat together to improve our English 😁 how do you see?
If you come to Viet Nam, I will give you many kinds of special food as like this.

Thank you very much!!! If be honest, I "hate" this word - "would". After your explanation, maybe we will be friends now... :-))
I hope you can be friends. At first it's not a very nice word, but once you get to know it, it can be your BFF!
Christian, you sound like an Englishman rather than an Aussie..Are you a Brit migrant in Australia? :).. I hope that's not a sensitive question..
Hi Krishna! No, it's not a sensitive question! I was born and raised in Australia but I have lived outside of Australia since 2000 so my accent is a little diluted now!
Yes, that explains.. :)
I would want speaking English fluently if I would know how. 😊
Hello from Russia.
The committee would consist of six members, please explain the use of would,as also in this sentence - you would have noticed in earlier classes, and also in sentence --you would notice in the next chapter.
Why I don’t he makes me laugh always when I attend his lesson
Haha.. Sir why you always give example on pizza... I have been noticing for long time... 👏👏
Because pizza is life.
Please explain the use of would in the following sentences ---1-' I came in and orderderd some shoes from you.' O yes, sir When it would have been exactly.' 2----You would have studied about it in earlier classes.3--Do you think above discussion Would have been of any use for those it was meant.4---Students would have been delighted to see the questions based on logical reasoning (appeared in the newspaper after the examination was over).5--Before the ball reaches the bat, we would have settled a claim somewhere in India (advertisement of insurance company).6--Many of you would agree that.....
This question is best asked in the Facebook group: facebook.com/groups/canguroenglish/
-Hey Mr. Christian, would I help you cross the road?
-No thanks. If I couldn't cross the road by myself, I would ask you for it.
-Okah.
Is it better to say " If I was hungry..." or " If I were hungry ..." ?
A friend of mine, who is American, told me: " This is an exception, but , for conditional, you have to say " If I were..."
If I had enough money, I would travel around the world. Great lesson, teacher!
Me too! I would pack my bags tomorrow! Let's hope that we win the lottery!
Canguro English It would be like a dream. 😂
Hello Christians . Thanks for this class ,I don't think the "would" subject is a basic one !!! for two reasons 1)it is very commonly used word in many diverses contexts (as you showed it) 2)Now that the video is over ,I have some questions for you . For the last one we are reporting a speach ;ex: (I will help her => he said/told me he would help her.)
but can we keep the "will" in this case ex:(I will eat a pizza =>Christian said he will eat a pizza ).If this is possible what is the difference ? (I'll come back latter for a second question , the reason for this firts question is that in my first language I can find a solution to say this phrases with 2 differents tenses without changing the spacetime ,said in the past reported in the present to say the future ...but they have consequently not the exact same meaning ....)
I hope you got me ^^
Hi David! I have had many questions about exactly this subject so I have decided to make a class about specifically this. Look out for it next Friday!
sir 0&1 Conditionals are clear but 2&3 aren't very clear could you pleaseeeee explain these once more .I would be highly thankful to you.
Did you watch this video? th-cam.com/video/a5kr91f4nXw/w-d-xo.html
Cxinteresante Cristian, pero complejo de mecanizar
Practice, practice, practice. It's not that hard, I promise! Start slowly and build up. Poquito a poco!
I like that lesson. but I didn't understand the last part properly.
Which part?
Came here due to the little Vietnamese sweet 😅🤣
Lasagnia and pizza... we want something else :))))
NO! Pizza is life.
About past habit was not clear to me.
Do you want me to explain more?
To be honest, I do not actually dig that food because it is so hard to hold it in your hand without literally breaking it and that is really nagging at me
Christian will not help Maria - a prediction.
Christian will not help Maria - a refusal.
The same thing happens with 'would'. They have one word for the two different situations)) I have no clue why.
Did you forget to use WOULD to speculate about the past? Never mind explain the difference of how it's similar to will have done to talk about past certainty?
If I were a rich man, I wouldn't have to work
Probably I am the worst student... I don't understand " would " in the sentence about 17 years old...
It is wrong to say: "Christian said he would have helped Maria" indeed "Christian said he would help Maria"
My doubt, you said "If I WAS hungry, I would eat a pizza.".. Should it be not "If I WERE hungry, I would eat a pizza"?..Please let me know.. :)
You can say 'were' or 'was'. 'Were' is a remnant of the subjunctive in English (which no longer exists: you cannot say 'I were' in any other situation), but now it sounds a little bit formal so in general people prefer to use 'was'. I hope that helps!
Thank you for enlightening me here.. :)
My pleasure!
Why u write woods rather write would in titles
I think because of same pronouns it
Don't I already know this? !!! Bye.
pizza.alert!
