After “watching around” book tube, this is the best channel to get a wide range of recommendations. Thank you for getting me to read Mystic River.

Loved it!!! It took me some time but I ended getting the audible to go along with the book and it was great! Loved the audible voice !

I am so happy you did a review on this! I’ve been trying to get into fantasy and have picked up different fantasy books to begin my journey into the genre. I bought this one quite awhile ago solely based on the cover 😍 and am excited to read it once I get comfortable with fantasy

Thank you so much for this review. So many of the "reviews" about this book are about how much they either loved the book and it's the ultimate thing ever or how it's horrible and not worth it.
I've been putting it off for a couple of years as well. I'd love it if it was a stand alone.

Great review,, A very good book.

Why did they market it that way? Because marketing people don't know what a book is.

Sadly, I was very MEH on this book. Pacing is terrible, nothing happens and I didn't care about the characters. Not for me at all.

I was thinking of reading this book, but I noticed you either love it or you don't. What has stopped me from reading it is because I've read several reviews say the same thing that you mentioned.

I read about five pages and it seemed utterly derivative, but (like Way of Kings) I constantly feel like I should try it again.

I love love love Priory. But, "A Day of Fallen Night" is far superior in every way. Highly recommend you give it a try, as you seem to enjoy priory so much. (Who doesn't love fantasys about lesbians and dragons!!). A day of fallen night is another standalone prequel, set in the great sorrow or grief of ages. (Its was briefly discussed in priory) also, Thank you for the recommendations, of other authors that feel like Shannon's writing style. Loved this format! 🐉🐲🖤

I saw the same with other booktubers. That they only make positive reviews. Why is that?

  • @CaptHawkeye
    @CaptHawkeye ปีที่แล้ว +13

Can't speak for this one, but A Day Of Fallen Night certainly bludgeon you over the head with 2023 political talking points, complete with lectures on wearing your mask, climate change & bigotry that wouldn't feel out of place on current-day Twitter. Without question the worst book I've read.

I was on edge about this series because it's mostly young women that seem to review this so I wasn't sure if this wasn't just another "Twilight" with better cover art. But if it's as political as you say I'll stay clear of it.

@@heretic124 I made a promise to myself that I would finish every book I started this year. This has been the only one to challenge that promise. I came into it with an open mind, but damn. Never again. This book has taught me never to trust a review score again.

"feminist fantasy" -- and that seals it for me, I'll find something else.

Samantha's new book is called A Day of Fallen Night, and it's a prequel to this book. Haven't read it yet but you reminding me how much I enjoyed her first book may have pushed this up the TBR.

Kept hearing how great this book is. (Like here)
But after 200 pages, I personally grew bored. Lots of telling and not showing. Lots of nothing happening. Very slow paced, and I personally liked to be grabbed by the throat right away, and for a book to continue to keep my interest throughout.
This book didn't do that. Stick with John Gwynne and Joe Abercrombie.

I would kind of agree. I'm at page 115, and something outside of court finally happened. 100 pages of Sabran being a pious asshole and Ead rolling her eyes at the ladies of the Privy.. honestly exhausting to read. But I am holding out hope that it gets better because of all the positive reviews, so I'm going to forge on. Lol
Also, I spent 50 of those 100 pages wondering why there was a whole set of ladies just for the bathroom, when I finally understood that the Privy was referencing Sabran's private bedchambers lol 😂

Yaaaas! I had a great time with Priory a couple months ago, and can't wait to check out the "stand-alone prequel" A Day of Fallen Night. Even though how can it be a stand-alone if you're marketing it as a prequel...but sure lol...

I just got this book and the prequel from The Broken Binding. Total cover buy. I haven’t picked it up yet. Your high praise means a lot. I’m going to add it to my 2023 TBR. I hope you read that prequel & let us know if we should read it in publication order or prequel first.

I'm currently in the middle of this book. Love it until here. Just want to add that there is a fifth perspective of Niclays Roos, an anatomist and alchemist who was banned from the court of queen Sabran.

Funny you mention House of the Dragon because this book especially reminded me some G R R Martin writing for some reason and the feeling I got reading those books a little bit.
