  • This is just my opinion. You do not have to think the way that I do, so please remember that when you leave a comment below. I think Shannon is such a beautiful writer, but I do not think that this book is as good as everyone makes it out to be.

Glad I found this. I think the issue is that 800 pages isn't really enough to weave a satisfying tale of that scope with so many POV characters in one sitting. If the story had just been told from Ead's perspective, maybe Niclays, the story could've been handled a bit more concisely. Tané felt very much like an afterthought and I don't feel like Loth is needed as a POV character. The early world building is a strength of the book, but it's left to waste away in the remaining bits.

Thank you for this great review. I think you put it way more eloquently than I did in my goodreads review, but I think the underlying feeling is the same. On the one hand I want to gush about how amazing and respectable it is what Shannon did and tried here. And then, she tried so much in 800 pages that some things really fell flat for me. I'm curious how the prequel improves on this book.

I think she should have swapped Loth’s POV for the Donmata. She had better potential.
PotOT was weighed down by unnecessary world building early on & unbalanced character investment which led to some pretty serious pacing problems later on in the novel.
I was eating this book up thru certain sections but then it was like a hard stop multiple times.
    Tane deserved more screentime. 🤪
And it’s strange how rushed the end is. I got to about 40 pages left and was like wait ain’t this book about to be over? I knew I was in for quite an “ending”. 😭

I was disappointed too but for different reasons. I'm an action guy and there wasn't much. The first few chapters promised dragons and assassins, and then there was little follow up. I actually liked it more near the end because the pacing and action picked up. Not a drama or tension guy so I didn't miss that. Yeah, would be better if trimmed by a third. Scenes were well written and short but there were too many unnecessary scenes.

SPOILER ALERT!!! How did everyone die like in the middle of the book and NO ONE died in the end? Makes like literally 0 sense, way too Disney. Still 💔 by Kit's death

Have you read Voyagers of hell. You must try it if you want to read something original in fantasy genre.

I loved the books but it could of been easily split in to two books and certain parts expanded upon. This could of been extended even further. Very good books
