Ah, yes. "The 12 Jungian Archetypes" made famous by Carl Gustav Jung. He believed that people in our lives fell under one of the 12 types.
My advice? Don't settle for a cookie cutout. That's why the video says NOT TO USE THESE personality types. Do you want real-like characters? Well then maybe you should go learn a lot about someone, or write about someone you know best. Maybe yourself? Maybe an idol of yours? When you stop trying to box yourself in, you'll see that people...we're simple in some ways, but inside where everything about them hides or exists...we're complex on the inside.
Honestly, I think this is why some people really have a hard time writing compelling characters, because they fall short on actually making them seem real. They settle for a cheat sheet. It's not necessarily wrong to use these, but why would anyone cut corners and try to make it easy when nothing good is easy. We have to work for everything in life; nothing gets handed to us.
I'm not trying to make anyone feel bad, so don't get defensive. I'm merely stating the not-so-obvious to those who may see this list as a solution. Remember that this is a list of "types to avoid". If you love your characters, then get to know them. Ask yourself, "Who is this character? What do they want? What are their flaws? What was their past like?"
One more thing: if you plan on using a mental illness, or a disorder, or some kind of handicap, etc. DO YOUR RESEARCH. Seriously.
For example, I am trans (trans woman) and we've had too many misrepresentations in media. We are always portrayed as the villain, who's perverted, or someone who tricks others. (Honestly, that's because anime has a lot to do with that...It has become a trope that demeans us as nothing more than boys in girls clothes. We are not "traps". No one is trapping anyone into doing anything here. Trans people are actually pretty sensitive when it comes to relationships and we value consensual intimacy as much as anyone empathetic and caring does.) Identity is very important to us, as I'm sure it is for many people in the world. It is NOT A MENTAL ILLNESS, y'all. It's a disorder known as "Gender Incongruence". It is simply a health problem. This was classified by the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2019.
Knowing that, you could start easily enough on a trans character. But do your research. Talk to trans people and get their side of the story. Ask them many questions before creating a character out of "inclusivity". Some goes for religion, race, sexual orientation, identity, political affiliation, and anything else you plan on including in your comic. It's important how we portray these characters. Messing this up can be damaging. Your audience absorbs more than you think.
Thank you. Much love, y'all. Be safe! Be well! (Is Covid-19 over yet?!)

@@KitKatWiffleBallBat Thank you so much for taking the time to write all of this and share your experience! You have made some VERY strong points! Especially your points centered around inclusivity, diversity, and representation in media!
At the end of the day, I hope people can use my advice as a stepping stone. What I say or believe isn't the final say, so I hope people can learn from the 12 Jungian Archetypes, see it for what it is, and make their own reasonable decision about how to build off of it.
Thanks again for opening the conversation!

I think rather than picking any single option in any of these categories, it'd more helpful to do a spider graph, because I know personally I had strong connections to like...ten of the twelve options you listed. More than that, many of these drives _reinforce each other,_ such as my drive to create justice -- so that I can protect those I love -- through judicious use of rules -- so that nobody will stop us from exploring life's possibilities -- and creating beauty for ourselves and others.
If you can only pick one of these, you'll probably run afoul of the Barnum Effect, because all of these are themes of human existence that people will probably face _at some point_ in their lives. It's just about _how much weight_ you put into each category.

I don’t think arts was seen as a female thing at all, it was still male dominated. It’s hard to think of famous female Renaissance painters.

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Thank you for taking the time to share! Historically I would have to agree with you! Female painters were present since forever, but the art industry was a male-dominated one. Women were forbidden from learning how to formally paint and could only learn from spouses, husbands, fathers, or friends who would volunteer to teach them.
Even during the Renaissance, women, artists had to have their male mentors take credit for their work so that it could be sold. Eventually, they had to work under male pen names because art galleries and sellers wouldn't take women artists seriously. Some notable female artists during the Renaissance are Sonfonisba Anguissola, Artemisia Gentileschi, Lavina Fontana, Elizabetta Sirini, Clara Peeters, and Judith Leyster!
I only know this much because I've taken a few art history classes in college, one being focused on "women in art" haha. As time went on, women began to gain more rights and were taken more seriously when they could join Artist Guilds, display work at exhibitions and apply to join The Academy
It's interesting to see how this narrative sort of flipped in the present day. From personal experience, I've found myself being maybe one of three boys total in a 30 person art class. This has been true throughout my 4 years at an Arts Academy and during my time at university.
Presently, subjects are gendered for some reason with STEM fields being predominantly male-driven. Women are often discouraged from pursuing STEM fields and they make up the vast minority of the workforce. As a result of this women are more likely to be urged to pursue more liberal arts careers or lesser STEM fields
I only know this bit of information because I've been taking gender studies classes for the past four years lol
I agree with what you're saying though. In retrospect, art is not a "female-oriented" field and everyone who wants to pursue it should be allowed to. It's just interesting how throughout history, men dominated the art field, but now in art education classes, it seems like the classrooms are female-dominated.
I hope that could clear some things up if I mentioned something about that in the video lol.
Feel free to message back, I'd be happy to keep the discussion going.
      All the best!

The historic and societal stuff and even some of psychological stuff is just likely plain wrong and not factual. It'd be a great idea to drop the Froyd and pick up the history and science books.
"Creative fields" didn't even exist until recently, through most of history they've largely been artisan, or craftsman fields. While there were some notable female artists like poets or musicians in ancient time, the majority of European history had largely men working in artisan and craftsman roles. Not to speak of religious artwork. It'd probably be more accurate to say that women engaging in "creative fields" is actually a more recent development. Hell, not really that long ago it was seen as somewhat uncommon for a woman to be a writer or painter. I don't see where the girl hobby thing comes from. I have a feeling there's slightly more women in university/college level artistic educations and humanities in general, so maybe the misconception that "it's always been that way" comes from there.
It's been pretty well established too that gender norms or whatever aren't purely societal constructs due to a male dominated society or whatever. A lot of those came about from womens' own action and preferences, believe it or not. Either way one would be lead to believe it depends more on natural temperament than sex, and the sexes just have different distributions in attributes like empathy, agreeableness etc. It doesn't mean there can't be, and aren't a noticeably large amount of exceptions. It just means >50% conform to some trend. There's actually a larger difference in the sexes' preferences nowadays compared to a few decades ago due to polarization.
Not trying to offer some kind of societal critique, just pointing out some things which I don't think are necessarily factual and seem to give off the wrong idea.

How men and women should behave ISN'T a man made system. Behaviour that correspond to man/woman is a evolutionary based development that made sure that the human race wasn't going to die out. But now, were fighting for your survival isn't needed anymore (in most countries) it's now the decade of individualism. Just because you as a man, enjoys art, doesn't make art as a subject any less feminine.

But that dosent mean forcing your son to like sports and cars and forcing your daughter to like romance and beauty. People have their own intrests and they shouldnt be repressed just bc someone decided it wasent attractive enough
