I would really liked to have seen some more thorough testing of game genres to get a better sense of the latency. Fast paced games like an FPS, or even a soulslike, would have been a really easy way to test if the input delay is noticeable and detrimental.
Also, big cities in the US gotta be inflating that “average internet speed” metric because I’m in the US and I’ve got nowhere near that speed, despite literally having the fastest available network in my area.

I appreciate your comments and comparisons to other devices you have used for remote play. I have this on pre-order but have been on the fence on whether I want to stick with it since my iPad mini works fairly well. The shortcomings of using my iPad mini is when I’m in different areas of the house. Sometimes it struggles and I’ve never found a comfortable way to use it while laying in bed which is usually where I like to play remote play if I’m not using the TV. It’s good to hear that the performance feels better than that of other devices so I think I’m going to stick with my pre-order. The one thing that is such a kick to the teeth is the fact that it doesn’t support Bluetooth. I don’t know why Sony continues to use the strategy to force people to buy their hardware. It never works out in their favor.

There definitely are very few if any better devices than this for PS5 streaming, though I feel like few people will be able to justify it when a Switch Lite costs the same, and a Steam Deck is not much more. Then there are certain features that are lacking, such as bluetooth, hdr, or 120hz (both for native 120fps games and 40fps modes).

Would love if it could connect as an external display through USB-C to the PS5 and thus not have to rely on internet connection, similar to the cinema mode in PSVR2. I have 1.2 Gbs wired internet connection between my PS5 and Mac and still the PS Remote play has been quite a crappy experience, so buying a device that only relies on Remote Play (through WiFi on top) is a no go for me.

  • @fapuloes
    @fapuloes ปีที่แล้ว +5

After a decade Sony came up with the brilliant idea of bringing back the Wii U gamepad, but A) much more expensive B) with less features. C) in need of a constant Wifi Connection to even work D) in the most lazy "this is just a regular controller with a screen attached to it" design ever.
As someone who has played a lot of Wii U games just on the gamepad alone I definitely see the appeal and market for such a product, but this is just too little too late imo.
On a related note - though that isn't a direct jab at Sony and the PS Portal - I wish the second screen experience would've stuck with the industry. Having a gamepad that displays your inventory, hud, map etc. was such a game changer and made gaming experiences more seamless. With the Wii U and 3DS-era now long gone, I begin to realize how much I'm actually missing that feature especially when playing games like Splatoon which made good use of that second screen in the past and feel now weirdly more restrictive due to the lack of it.
Sony could've been bold enough to bring that style of gameplay back with the Playstation portal, but of course they didn't because that would've meant doing more than the absolute bare minimum, which is understandable of course, but also so lame given the actual potential of the PS Portal.

This review is what I was looking forward to. Tell me how button latency is vs an occasional dip which doesn't really affect gameplay. I know technology is getting better with latency issues. If you watch a tv show on streaming vs over the air, there could be a a few seconds delay but as long as the audio matches the video then the show is in sync and watchable. This is what is happening to remote play. It is a few milliseconds off, but as long as the buttons I press match what is on the screen then it's irrelevant if there is a delay.

I could probably see this being more of a must-have if it supported even just downloading and playing PS Classics, like PS1, PS2, or PSP/Vita games. I suppose that could bump the price up, but I feel like it would hold a lot more value.
That said, I've been really disappointed with the build quality of the PS5 controllers, and I'm not hopeful that this would fair much better.
Still, I'm honestly very pleasantly surprised with the price point. I imagine this will be an item with fairly niche appeal, and may still be a bit ahead of its time (and issue that unfortunately applied to the Vita). I hope Sony isn't investing too much into this, because I could see this very much being something people gradually adopt over time, and again, at that price, I think it will absolutely find its market over a year or two. Particularly once PS5's start getting into more peoples' hands over the holiday season.

It's funny how hostile people are to this thing.
It's a PS5 accessory that is beyond optional. If you're treating it as an alternative to a Switch or Steam Deck that's on your comprehension skills, not the products.
It's a gimmicky little thing consisting of a controller, a screen and some networking devices. It costs the price of two Duel Senses. It's fine.
Is it expensive? Yes. Is it niche? Big yes. Do you need it? Obviously not.
But if you have that kind of money to burn and want to play your PS5 in the bathroom or other similar Switch-friendly scenarios? It's pretty dope.
But people gotta take everything personally. It's a disaster because it's not *for them". Yeesh.

I see the invention of the Playstation Portal is a way to manipulate consumers to purchase digital instead of hard copies of games. If your games aren't digital, the only game you can play is the game in the tray. They could've at least allowed you the ability to use the Playstation+ library. But they didn't. They could've used micro USB high-speed cards. They could've given the device memory to allow to download full games. But they didn't.
I believe that if this device becomes a success. In the future, a new version, "Pro" or upgrade, will be introduced so it can be used as a standalone unit such as the PSVita was or their own variation of the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, etc.
You can use wired headphones. You should be able to use any headphones that support the use of a USB dongle.

It bothers me when talking about something like the PS Portal or cloud gaming everyone seem to focus only on input latency and image quality, nobody seem to bring up the fact it eats up your internet cap.
You know, not everyone has the luxury to have unlimited or lightning fast internet, most people outside of the United States use capped internet with varried download speeds, also unlike TH-cam and Netflix where the video is pre-recorded and is highly compressed streaming games require a constant refresh in high quality.

Your internet doesn’t matter at all. Your local network has the problems. Connect your PS5 through Ethernet. And analyze your Wifi and Wifi signals of other people around you. Choose 5GHz WiFi or even better 6GHz WiFi if you have a Router or Access Point which supports it. And look that your Wifi Signal uses a Channel which isn’t used already by other people router/access points.
Even if you got a 1Gbit Internet speed, it doesn’t matter as long as your local Network (LAN) is the bottleneck
