556 is my go to especially for SHTF. It goes through way less walls than a pistol (if using a heavy non bonded or monolithic bullet like a 77SMK is perfect) you can carry way more ammo for the same weight, and 556 will be prevalent over 308. My thing now that the pistol BS has come is to go with a 14.5” pinned so it’s 16” and I put a law folder on mines. It still folds and fits in my grey ghost apparition bag without the extender being opened, since I run the DD block 2 upper she is sub moa with mk262 ammo and with a Vcog sco I can do everything from CQC to DMR work at 600 meters. Either way at the end of the day the best rifle for SHTF is the rifle you have and that you are good with. Short 308 gotta be super beasty especially indoors
I’d run a short 556 if you plan on walking far to get home . No shame running a Holosun if I’m leaving my gun in a vehicle I’d rather have the one with a Holosun stolen than an eo tech If someone breaks into your car . 308 is a hammer for sure but I’d only run a heavy rifle if I’m close to home . That’s just me . More likely to organically come across loaded 556 mags than 308. End of the day the best gun you can have for shtf is the one in your hands when it happens
I have a Sig M400 as my go-to primary. The 556 cartridge is tried-and-tested by the United States military. It's worked perfectly fine for decades I know because I've used it. That's another story for another time. But trust me they work just fine and they've got one hell of a lethal range. Most people aren't going to be wearing ballistics vests. Don't get me wrong I do have a beautiful bolt action 30-06. I have a bunch of tactical shotguns I say tactical because the whole short barrel pistol grip ar-style. Including a Remington 870 tac 14. Various pistols but my go to my primary would be a Beretta 92fs that's the one I carry all the time everywhere I go. 18 in the mag one in the hole. That's pretty good. In the end God forbid or God willing.. what's going to come down to is who sees who first and who is a better shot. That is exactly what it's going to come to.
