    Turn fighting against Zeros was not what the AVG did. Chenault taught them early to use the speed of the P-40 in a dive to hit and run against them. Above 250 MPH the Zero was a brick, below that the P-40 could not turn with it and would get killed unless it dove away at high speed.

    • @rickbowser3308

      Actual encounters with zeros in China were rare, during AVG/ 23rd fighter Squadron Campaign. It's more likely adversary would have been the Ki-43 Nakajima, ( Oscar ) although the tactics Chennault taught would have been identical as with the Zero.

      @@rickbowser3308 People forget that the Zero was a _Navy_ fighter, and the machines the AVG would have confronted were mostly Army fighters and bombers.

      Exactly. The P-40 *could* turn inside a Zero (or an Oscar) at high speed, but that advantage was fleeting as energy bled off. Best tactic for a P-40 driver was to zoom down, make a pass, break away and then gain altitude for another pass...and never get tempted to engage in a turning fight.

    P40’s usually did not take on any plane head on for the most. Chenault’s tactics were to dive on the enemy, cause the P40,s could not out maneuver the Zeros.

      Not sure where you got your info from. The USAAF and Navy pilots were forbidden from making "head on" attacks, as it was deemed too reckless at the time. Chennault realized that our firepower was greater than the Japanese and for the most part left it up to the AVG pilot's judgement.
      Chennault briefed the brass in Washington, including AAF Chief Henry "Hap" Arnold of the characteristics of the Mitsubishi A6M2 "Zero" months before the attacks of Pearl Harbor. However, not a single "Zero" was engaged by the AVG Flying Tigers. The A6M2 was an Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft and in the Burma/China area of operations, the AVG fought against the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force, which consisted mostly of Ki-27 and Ki-43 fighters.

    Thank you for this vid ! The AVG is one of my very favorite stories form the WWII era - one reason for that is I think the P-40 is one of the coolest looking aircraft of that time - especially with the shark mouth painted on the cowling.
    According to History Channel's "Dogfights" series it was Australians that first used the shark mouth - stands to reason - Aussies know a thing or two about big sharks.
    By the time U.S. pilots first tangled with the Japanese the P-40 was obsolete and at a terrible disadvantage with Zeros.
    AVG's commander Claire Chenault told his outfit it was suicide to try and dogfight a Zero.
    In light of that seeing a P-40 catch and kill a climbing Zero in a steep bank - that's game play and I'm cool with it - but in real life 80 some years ago - not a chance in hell.
    Still a great looking fighter and an excellent video - thank you !

    • @tempestfury8324
      @tempestfury8324 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The shark-mouth motif actually goes back to WWI and in the spring of 1941 a squadron of German Bf-110s used a similar design.
      But it never looked better than on a P-40! One AVG Flying Tiger pilots saw a photo in a newspaper with the motif on a commonwealth P-40 in North Africa. Chennault wanted all three AVG squadrons painted with the shark's mouth. "Looks mean as hell" ....and it did!
      As for the "Zero"....the Mitsubishi A6M2 was a Japanese Navy plane. During the Burma/China field of operations, the AVG never encountered a single Zero, at least never recorded. The AVG fought against Imperial Japanese Army aircraft, such as the Ki-27(Nate) and Ki-43(Oscar) fighters, as well as the usual bombers...the Ann and Sally.

    • @xenaguy01
      @xenaguy01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tempestfury8324
      You are correct about the Zeros being a no-show in CBI theater. But the Ki-43 (Oscar) bore a very close resemblance to the more famous Zero, and was often called the "army zero." The two planes had very similar handling characteristics, and had the same engine, and for all intents and purposes, were so similar as to be interchangeable.

    • @tempestfury8324
      @tempestfury8324 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@xenaguy01 : Correct but only to a point; although the Ki-43 "Oscar" and the A6M "Zero" shared the same powerplant and they looked similar, they were actually different planes. The canopy, wings, fuselage, tail section, and armament differed between the two. It's contestable that the Hayabusa (falcon) was actually a better plane than the Zero. It had a better turn radius and roll rate than the A6M. They were not as "interchangeable" as you suggested.
      For obvious reasons, one was a Japanese Navy craft, the other Army Air Force. That is only the tip of the iceberg why Japan failed....a failure of cohesion. Can you imagine the debacle the United States would have faced without a coherent force of the Navy, Marines, and Army Air Force?
      Thanks for the reply. If you're interested, I strongly suggest reading Flying Tigers by Daniel Ford.

    "The Japanese fighters are, in fact, a Russian LA7!"
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    This is not an LA-7. This is the LA-5, the first model of the LA series. In fact, the LA-5 is an LAGG-3 glider with a new more powerful air-cooled engine. LA-5, then LA-5 FN, then LA-7. LA-7 was almost completely metal (aluminum). But even an LA-5, with a more or less experienced pilot, would not give the P-40 a single chance. Bombers, these are German Ju-88s. What? Russian fighters and JU-88's with meatballs?? Look, here's the thing, the Japanese bombers were more fragile than the JU-88's, but the Japanese fighters, either the zero's or the older lighter ones with the open cockpit and the fixed landing gear were considerably more nimble than those Russian fighters. And the Japanese pilots in those aircraft, at this point in time were some of the most practiced and skillful pilots in any airforce. The whole character of the fight changes. it's a good part of the reason why the
    AVG pilots in their P-40's are fighting in the vertical. Smash and grab raids on the bomber formations, boom and zoom just as much as possible.

    I have been flying the P-40 for a while now and it's a good plane 6×50. Cals and can hold 2×100 kg and 1×500 kg bombs is just godly one notable disadvantage of the P-40 is it cant turn it turns like a bus so Japanese maneuverable fighters like the Zero and the Oscar can out turn you one thing that I always do is that the stall rate of the P-40 is very low it's around 50 mph for me that its starts to stall so besting that you will do is get as much altitude if a Fighter is climbing up to you then you climb up as well since the P-40 can get to 400 mph pretty fast if that said enemy fighter stall the go and attack the enemy basically boom and zoom tactics

      Turning radius and roll rate are different. It depends mostly on speed.
      That's exactly why Chennault developed the tactics to beat the Japanese.

    Pretty good videos. But you really have to work on your depiction of Japanese fighters. Also the P40 would never get into a turning fight with a Zero. That was a battle the Warhawk simply couldn't win. The AVG always used hit and run tactics to take advantage of the P40s superior diving ability and greater firepower.

      Read the description. He says there are no Japanese aircraft in the game, so he had to put Japanese skins on Russian and German planes.

    nice art but there was no way in this universe a P-49 would turn inside a Zero;
    the P-40 was such a terrible dogfighter that pilots were instructed to dive out of the sun and the the positive energy to climb back up over the enemy;
    NO ONE flew in a straight line that long and lived in ANY air war;

    Fun fact. Japanese pilots usually flew without parachutes because they felt that the added weight would interfere with maneuverability. It would be almost unheard of to see a Japanese pilot or aircrew member bail out.

    • @tempestfury8324
      @tempestfury8324 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would love to hear the sources of your "fun fact".
      Japanese pilots usually flew without parachutes because it interfered with maneuverability???? What nonsense is this? I've heard other crap like this that it interfered with the pilot's ability to scan the skies and check six. Baloney!
      Use some reason and logic here. A Ki-43 Oscar had a gross weight of 5,700+ lbs....an A6M Zero about 6,100 lbs. Do you honestly believe that a 20+ pound parachute would have any influence with center of gravity or maneuverability?
      What if the pilot was just a bit chunky?
      This is the stupidest post I've read in years. Now...maybe...there were Japanese pilots that simply didn't want a parachute or that they refused to bail out, due to honor. That's an acceptable claim.
      Go back to school. I highly recommend the book (yes, a book) "Flying Tigers" by Daniel Ford. You might actually learn something.
