I'm loving the IL-2 content recently. P-40 is an awesome plane. Have you thought about making a video on the LaGG-3? The LaGG-3 is underpowered and over weight like the P-40, limiting it's strengths and making it one of the lower performance aircraft. However the LaGG-3 has some very enjoyable handling characteristics. It's easy to handle in most situations, but it loosed energy quickly if you try to pull too hard too often, one it looses energy it is hard to regain it in combat. The climb rate is just below average. The LaGG-3's one big advantage against a 109 is the roll rate. the LaGG-3 has a good roll rate while the 109 has an abysmal roll rate. The 109 will out climb you and can generate energy much faster, hiding some pilot errors. You can't make energy mistakes in a LaGG-3 or you will be punished hard. For air to air, I suggest the 20mm canon, and for air to ground the 23mm or 37mm can be chosen. However, loading a 37mm full of HE and taking it against some He111s can be a lot of fun. bring some rockets too, just for good measure. (Winking Face Emoji)
P-40 can do anything from 25,000 to 29,000 feet as the service ceiling depending on the subvariant. Only had a single supercharger. The Soviets loved them because the Germans flew low in the East.
....On April 26, 1939, Curtiss was awarded a contract for 524 P-40s - once again, the largest order for fighter planes placed by the Army since 1918. The P-40 prototype was armed with one .50- and one .30-caliber machine gun - the standard USAAC fighter armament during the 1930s - but the production model was armed with two .50-caliber machine guns not 6 .50 caliber....Thanks👍
I remember an older engineer telling me that the P-40's wing is so overbuilt it's the only aircraft that NACA ever gave an unlimited lifespan in flight hours to its wing. This gives it its great dive performance, you just cant break the wings.
@@555_Kochi_STi Unfortunately,I didn't find out until after they both had passed!!! I was so upset! i would have loved to pick their brains about it!!!!
It may be underpowered at higher altitude, but the P40 was surprisingly maneuverable. Jeff Ethell (RIP) admitted to accidentally banging his head of the side of the canopy when he was caught off guard by the snappy roll rate. He flew many warbirds and even a few late soviet era jets. Sadly, the P38 curse took him before his time.
My absolute favourite WW2 aircraft. Also, very sadly under-appreciated considering how well it did and how many we produced/used to keep enemies at bay until we could get into proper production of more modern aircraft. Is there a Fairey Swordfish option? I think that one was responsible for taking out the Bismarck’s rudder. That would be an interesting mission.Actually any torpedo bomber from WWII might be interesting
There isn't. IL-2 aircrafts are mainly focused on Germans and Soviets, with a dozen iconic Allied aircraft DLCs serving as icing on the cake. They do want to release more Allied stuff and eventually a Pacific Theater, but things are moving at snail's pace. A Japanese B5N Kate or TBF would have been awesome. Torpedo bombers to me always feel like the most dangerous and shittiest job of all ww2 aviators.

P-40 is a stable gun platform, because it has 3! Longerones it each wing. Spitfires and 109 only have one. Which means that P-40 is heavy, but extremely sturdy
GS, I notice after your WW1 flying, that you are starting to make sure you get very close before opening fire with machine guns playing WW2 battles. This works well - up until things like enemy wings, wheels, cockpit canopies and bailing out pilots start hitting your aircraft. Deflection shooting, if you are going to get that close, could be a life saver! With the P-40, the bloke who wrote the book on how to effectively use it was a chap called Claire Chennault, of American Volunteer Group / Flying Tigers fame. He taught his pilots to energy fight the Japanese in the P-40B, / Tomahawk IIIB, then later P-40E's, against much bigger opposing numbers, pretty effectively. Apparently the Shark mouth logo was copied by RAF Squadron 112, ( which was largely staffed by Polish, Canadian, Aussie and Kiwi pilots) from a Luftwaffe heavy fighter group flying Me-110's in Crete, Zerstörergeschwader 76. When the AVG saw a photo of an RAF 112 squadron Tomahawk aircraft in a newspaper, they adopted the design as well - and the rest is history! :-D
The P-40 is my favorite WW2 plane ever, so much fun to fly in game and looks so menacing with the big intake. Nothing comes close for me. Love your channel and especially these videos of older aircraft, thanks for the content!

Those Hs-129s were taking a real beating but not surprising as they were ground-attack aircraft with a heavily armored cockpit. Really love this Il-2 content.
Do love the Warhawk, A2A did a great model of one. For a long time, there was one on Google maps out in the desert, which had been landed almost intact, an engineer made a forced landing and was too far out in the cuds to make it back, it was found much much later with the controls still configured for landing.
@@-Zevin- Probably, but it would be fun to highlight how underrated the P-39 was while showcasing a head-to-head between the two early Army Air Corps. fighters.

If you can, I would love to see you sortie out in the P-40 and intercept Japanese bombers and their escorts in the Pacific. I know the Warhawk saw extensive use in the Pacific, especially by The Flying Tigers.
I think during WW2 it was called "bailing out"....love the channel....long before most of your viewers were born I checked out my first library book. It was called WARHAWK PATROL...a fun little story about a pilot and his P40 he named The Tomboy. 40 years later I found a copy of the book on ebay...good times
The Hs-129 is basically a flying tank, kinda like the IL-2. The whole nose is an armored box(Most of the canopy as well.), has air cooled radial engines. It can soak up a lot of damage. On the other hand, it was pretty underpowered and extremely cramped for the pilot. So cramped that several gauges and the gunsight are outside the cockpit, and what gauges are in the cockpit are so low down that they were difficult to see without scrunching down. But it's a neat aircraft that's a lot of fun to fly and ground pound with. Especially since it could carry some seriously nasty firepower.
I do still wonder what a P-40 with a Marlin-Rolls would be capable of. Always been a fan of the heavy old girl, something ruggedly elegant about her design.

As soon as you started to stream Il-2, I put it in my Steam wishlist, and boom, a sale. So far I picked up Stalingrad, and coincidently the P-40. Im looking to pick up Boutenplatte, and Flying circus because your WWI videos looked like so much fun. I'm curious what is the idea of the ironsights in the P-40? Is it as cut and dry as its just a backup to the reflective glass? Also I find it much easier to waste 109s in IL-2 than in DCS. In DCS, they're bullet sponges lol. Another great video.
hey frank awesome to hear you're getting into IL2 you've picked up some great stuff so far, as for the sights I think you're right, I believe it to be backup sight.
@@pittsters2a718 it reminds me of Janes WW2 fighters from what I saw. That game was near and dear to my heart as a kid. Tons of fun. I would be counting down the minutes at school so I can go home to play it lol.
@@frankbizzoco1954 yup I had that also, loved that one, if I remember correctly there was a mode on there where you could fight wave after wave right ? good times in that game.
The sad thing is pilots bailing out too late I'm sure happens quite frequently in WW2 and in other wars. There was an episode in dogfights where a P-51 pilot witnesses a BF 109 pilot bailing out way too low to the ground and sees the German pilot bouncing on the ground it. haunted him forever. Aerial combat is some dangerous shit
Damnit ED, give us a damn P-40 already. How can you not have one of the most prolific planes in WW2 in the game? This plane fought for so many countries and in EVERY theatre of the war. Not having it is like not even having WW2 planes in a WW2 game. And give us a square wing 109 as well. P-40 is definitely a low level plane. Only has the single stage SC.
@@Power5 Perhaps an older addition but I'm talking the Great Battles series which plays out over Europe. I couldn't go back to "1946" after DCS and IL-2 GB's ( I also own Tank Crew as well as all the modules except Flying Circus)
So you've encountered the reason why so many IL2 players are going the other way to DCS, the garbage damage model. Every time you said "somehow this guy is still flying" after pummeling a plane full of .50s is just cathartic. Its something we've been dealing with for over a year :D
One thing pounded into my mind after watching / reading about P40s...going directly to Claire Chenault and Flying Tigers was to use the P40 in slashing, diving, hit and run passes....and to never try to turn with any fighters. Speed in the dive was its great strength....not dog fighting.
Fun fact, at higher speeds the P-40 can outturn a Zero. The issue is that the Zero has large control surfaces which are great at low speeds but at high speeds humans just don't have the arm muscles to fight the wind pressure.
The p 40 did have a intermediate altitude model the f-10 it had a merlin in it. Of course this is still prior to the merlin getting a 2 stage super charger.
Were the the Flying Tigers stationed in England? I thought it was a squadron that fought in the Chinese Theater. It was a little disconcerting to see the Flying Tiger nose art and British wing markings. lol I'm used to seeing them with the Chinese round sunburst pattern on their wings.
The second twin you got when you said it's doubtful pilot got out ... he did.. see him slip by as you turn .... 7nlrss there was a second crew in that?

@@WALTERBROADDUS You might mean turbochargers? It had turbos on top of superchargers..
I've got Bodenplatte and i would personally recommend getting it, the planes are a ton of fun and the maps look good as well.
Aerial combat is some dangerous shit
pure ASMR. I love these vids.
Love the P-40. Super enjoyable video.
I'd like my long promised F4U Corsair FIRST.
I think P-40 was promised first. That developer then just walked away.
@@Power5 I can fly a Warhawk here.
I'm dying to fly a Bent Wing MF'er.
SOONEST.
Is there no f4U in il2 anymore? I remember the original that had war thunder numbers of flyable planes.
@@Power5 Perhaps an older addition but I'm talking the Great Battles series which plays out over Europe.
I couldn't go back to "1946" after DCS and IL-2 GB's ( I also own Tank Crew as well as all the modules except Flying Circus)
Outstanding Video and presentation.
Very cool. Nice to see the P-40 fighting.
You are a specialist in midair disassembly! Lol.
So you've encountered the reason why so many IL2 players are going the other way to DCS, the garbage damage model. Every time you said "somehow this guy is still flying" after pummeling a plane full of .50s is just cathartic. Its something we've been dealing with for over a year
:D
For me, shooting down bombers is akin to shooting feral pigs for some reason. Great vid as usual!
Looks great; i know the P-40s from their service in the Pacific mainly.
I truly enjoy watching the pilots bail out at the last moment and then they shoot don’t open so they go kersplat on the ground.
Excellent video. Loving the WW1 and WWW2 videos
The best Ace of the War for Australia was in a KittyHawk P40! I wish I could have flown them!!
love the Il-2 work
Were the the Flying Tigers stationed in England? I thought it was a squadron that fought in the Chinese Theater. It was a little disconcerting to see the Flying Tiger nose art and British wing markings. lol I'm used to seeing them with the Chinese round sunburst pattern on their wings.
Thanks for the heads up on the sale
Can't wait for Normandy to pop.
F’s in the chat for that 109 pilot that became a pancake lol
Henschel HS129 only a staffel in No Afrika (Tunisia) Did not last 2 weeks, because they had no sand filters. Did well while they lasted.
Glad to see you on this Platform!
A bit less sterile, a Bit more personal...
The armament of the p-40 was a combination of .30 cal and two .50 cal in most cases, I believe.
love it soundtrack from 1942 havnt heard it in years
P38. Now the P40. Just need some P47 action now and you will have hit all my faves (that are available in the ETO)
I'm not sure the Allisons had superchargers which is why they were not good over 15k feet.
My name is Wild Bill Kelso. Turn this tub around, you're taking me to Tokyo!
6 .50 calibers of *FREEDOM!*
Next video - GS and LS multicrew in a B25 Mitchell
Il2 looks like so much fun in vr, I really wish gpu's weren't worth their weight in gold rn.
Ive been thinking of getting it, and now sale is here!
Really enjoying these WWII videos
The P-40's aesthetics are 2nd to none.
A bogey is a unidentified aircraft , a bandit is a identified enemy aircraft.
P-40 is my favorite WW2 fighter. It was not the best, but it was the coolest in my opinion.
It has been said that it is the "best second choice".
The second twin you got when you said it's doubtful pilot got out ... he did.. see him slip by as you turn .... 7nlrss there was a second crew in that?
