- “It’s clear Russia is totally dependent now on China. So in the end, this is not really a winning strategy from Putin.”

The arrogance of an extreme narcissist knows no bounds. The irony is he has created a whole government based on people telling him what he wants to hear. Russia is losing not because of its technology but despite of it. Don't believe me look how long Ukraine was able to hold out with mainly dated Soviet tanks and Jets.

Why take Taiwan when taking Siberia would be way easier and has all the resources Xi needs. China has immense local influence along the Russia-China border and into Yakutsk where there very few people but huge amounts of minerals.
China would still be under threat of nuclear response from Russia, just like the west is now. That's a pretty powerful disincentive.
Putin should have known not to show his hand to those 2 cut throats…
Peer wars are extremely difficult to fight compared to a western country fighting tribesman. We haven't really seen peer wars since WW2 and we know how that turned out. Russia is learning that a determined educated country isn't going to easily fold. Xi should take note and also remember that Taiwan has a moat around it.
That moat can keep our equipment out too...Taiwan needs to raise its military budget to 10% of GDP immediately. All drones and asymmetric munitions, they also need to produce a domestic fighter platform, and need hundreds of them. We will not be able to get a fraction of equipment there that we did in Ukraine.
But it is very, very small.

By his sycophantic subordinates.
Quite simply Putin wanted a huge win grabbing Ukraine in a quick action. His subordinates weren’t brave enough to tell him what he needed to hear, they just told him he wanted to hear. So, he made this big ego boosting grab based on faulty intelligence. In no way was he prepared for a long war. His biggest mistake was completely misreading how Europe would do without his gas AND come together to supply Ukraine with superior weapons. The main result is the world now sees the full result of Russian endemic corruption, poor leadership and the poor quality of weapons.
He had little choice. It was either that of face total humiliation and the loss of billions of dollars a year in income.
A sea invasion of Taiwan would be MUCH more difficult than the land invastion of Ukraine. If you want to understand this better, please read Winston Churchill's excellent tome entitled "The History of the Second World War". He describes clearly why the allies waited and prepared so long for D-day, much to the chagrin of Stalin, but ultimately with success.

Russia did grab 18% of Ukraine, they didn't win, lost assets they CAN afford (because NATO will never attack them); the Ukrainians did the fighting, the West however failed to mobilize their power, has NO strategy and this is costing Ukraine a lot of civilians and military casualties (totally unneccessary if the West had send enough anti air/missile systems and had put no limits on their usage).

We also have our own production of thermal imager matrices, electron optical converters, satellite equipment, and our own latest generation lithographic machines. It is always worth pointing out that technologies are not only microelectronics, Russia is the leader of nuclear energy, the production and development of unique alloys, jet engines, the production of ultrahigh-temperature superconductors, space technologies (Almost all of Elon Musk's developments are purchased developments of the USSR and Russia).
