I suspect that the reason Western governments don’t talk about Putin using gas against Ukrainian soldiers is that the seriousness of it would require a serious moral response. But the immorality of this silence makes us immoral, particularly that a Times guest, a retired general, opined recently that NATO involvement in Ukraine would end the Russian invasion “in a heartbeat”.

@@timmilder8313 There may be parallels in that the political masters desired that the Intelligence Services of their countries required them to provide evidence to justify their objectives - weapons of mass destruction, Ukraine crumbling to a Russian invasion.
Your statement is pure nonsense - show us the degradation of Baghdad by missile and artillery fire and contrast that with the hellish vision of Mariupol.
Also the intelligence reports of atrocities occurring in the occupied territories of Ukraine make any atrocities committed by UK/US forces in Iraq pale.
Your comment is superficial and nonsense.

Ukraine should now be supplied to the fullest to get the Russians behind their borders as soon as possible, and to be able to start reasonable negotiations.

Imagine how much territory Russia has to cover with air defense systems now that Ukraine can strike Russian territory with western munitions. Now they have to space everything out so much that it will leave either some things undefended or sparsley defended. If Western weapons can destroy S-300 and S-400 systems without being intercepted it means Ukraine could achieve what was previously considered unbelievable which is controll over the skies or at the very least, parity with the Russians in the skies.

The Ukrainian armed forces, as the Colonel points out, are very inventive in circumventing some of Russia's superiority in manpower, weaponry, and logistics. This is classic assymetric warfare, and in many cases seems to be working. I disagree that "morale is everything" in warfare. It is however a significant factor. I would say that morale is a "deficiency need". If you don't have it, no amount of sophisticated weaponry or superior numbers can overcome the deficiency, but if one's forces have great unity of fighting spirit and high morale, one can overcome a significant measure of materiel and manpower resources, especially with drone warfare capability. It's potentially the wild card that can turn the tide when most other factors are relatively equal. The Russian forces at this point in the conflict must be suffering a great degradation of morale and motivation. They are not defending their homeland or a positive set of patriotic national principles. At least some of them must have a sense by now that they are fighting at the whim of a corrupt and dictatorial warlord in Vladimir Putin, and asking themselves whether that is enough of value to lose one's life for. Advantage Ukraine.

    • @chosengeneration-ny9lo

the Russians had only one mobilization of 300 thousand people - don't you think that's not enough? In Ukraine, mobilization has never stopped. Who has more losses? And what do you think - is it possible to capture the country with such small forces? And then what is Putin's real goal? Maybe he's already said that? The neutral status of Ukraine without NATO? And yes, you have already forgotten that he has been saying this since the age of 18 .

While it's obviously ridiculous that Ukraine has been restricted from engaging targets in Russia, and it's an improvement that they now can in limited areas, that doesn't change the game. Russia has pounded Ukraine for the duration of the war. It has not collapsed command structures, halted industrial output, or broken morale. It's not realistic to think this has significantly shifted the balance. Much, much more supply needs to be combined with rational rules of engagement in order to make a collapse occur.

If this war continues and Putin continues to rattle the nuclear sabre, we will see on TV news that Putin "hung himself" outside Red Square. MAD has worked for 70+ years, nothing has changed. Not just the UK needs a government that recognizes a war is on the horizon, but the USA does as well. The best way to prevent a war is to prepare for it. It is unfortunate that schools no longer teach history, there is so much of it to learn from.
I don't see either candidate in the USA as being desirable, both are too old and neither has any plan to "win".

From the States: I'm an anti-war/peace-nik from way back, but even I see the value in Ukraine's cause. What many "R"s today in the House seem to forget, or can't be bothered to learn, is that the US promised Ukraine that if they gave up the nukes left over from the USSR, we gave Ukraine "... security assurances against the threat or use of force against Ukraine’s territory or political independence^..."
We need to honor our agreements. Full Stop.
