The book content was hilarious and the actor was perfect!
Dropping his wand trying to teach Harry a shield spell, and just told Harry "Just do what I did." and Harry says "What drop my wand?". Embarrassing Harry and constantly catching Harry in awkward situations and think he was seeking fame and autographs at Hogwarts when he never was.
I wished they put the Valentine’s Day events in the movie, including Ginny’s singing valentine for Harry and a dwarf dressed like Cupid to deliver it. That would’ve been epic! 😂

Lockhart had 2 older sisters who were Squibs and because of this, Lockhart’s mother (who was a witch) favoured him more than the sisters. Because of this, I’m wondering if Lockhart’s sisters ended up like Petunia Evans, jealous of their magical sibling so they wanted to be normal. In fact, I like to think that one of them was called Petunia. Miss Petunia Lockhart.

It kinda makes you wonder if harry was affected by the curse when he was teaching dumbledore's army. It could be argued he was since he lasted one year. Another could be he wasn't due to his scar and the DA being a study group as opposed to an official class. What do you think?

I think it’s worth mentioning the “Dumbledore’s Plan” Theory. Part of the reason why Lockhart was hired was so that Harry could learn not to let his fame go to his head.
Dumbledore knew couple of wizards who were obliviated by Lockhart. And also he wanted to expose Lockhart. I agree with your theory. I also think that maybe Dumbledore wanted to show people such as Harry what fame can do to people. Of course Harry hated his own fame. Lockhart wanted to be famous so he committed crimes. And he agreed because Dumbledore told him about the opportunity to teach Harry Potter.

That's why I think it should be discussed because it could have SO many alternative answers.
It was imperative to kept alive the Defence against the dark arts teacher position as it was a way for Dumbledore to know if Voldemort was still alive, the curse disappeared after his dead. that is why Dumbledore never quit looking for answers about him and the horocruxes.

I don’t know if it was an inconsistency there are some or do to the fact that Voldemort was basically vanished since only part of his soul remained in that place the king’s cross station.

I wondered why they didn't get rid of a cursed position. Renaming it is genius.
Re naming it may not work... they've tried to get rid the curse in different ways but couldn't figure out how, it may of been a spell/curse of Tom's own design and you may not be able to trick it just by renaming it.
I’ve asked this before, but can you explain the timeline of what happened with the prophecy and Peter defecting? So far I have:
Early 1980- prophecy
July 1980- Harry was born. Peter defected around this time give or take a couple months.
Late summer/Fall/winter 1980- Snape told Dumbledore that Voldemort was after the Potters
Fall 1981- Dumbledore offered to be Secret Keeper.
Lily and James said no and that they wanted Sirius to do it.
Sirius said Peter should be Secret Keeper.
Last week of October 1981- the Fidelius charm was cast with Peter as Secret Keeper. Peter told Voldemort where the Potters were hiding.
Halloween 1981- Voldemort killed Lily and James.
Why did it take Voldemort a year to track down the Potters?
This was a great video. I could not fully comprehend the horror of what Lockhart was doing when I was first reading/watching. As a young adult rereading I remember realizing damn this guy was diabolical not as outwardly in your face as Umbridge but still what a piece of work. I think Branagh's performance was just so good I wanted to like the character lol.
I legitimately never realized until watching this video that Dumbledore took advantage of the DADA curse just to expose Lockhart as a fraud.
Why didn't Dumbledore repair Ron's Wand after he broke it on the tree? Well that Broken wand also served as a pretty fitting punishment for Lockhart.

Here’s a loophole idea, bending the rules without breaking. What if 2 teachers 👨🏻🏫 had a shifting schedule. Lupin was the best one the students ever had, so a would have 1 year, then Snape would take the next, then back ta Lupin again. That would’ve made some peace between the 2, and Snape who’s been trying to get the job for years would have it. It would save Dumbledore time in finding a new professor each year too. If Lupin doesn’t know potions 🧪, there surely must b someone available, if Snape needed a substitute.
That might work. The thing is the curse might just get rid of one of them one year and a different one the next.

In order to nullify the curse, Dumbledore could have just taught Dark Arts at Hogwarts instead like they do at Durmstrang. Going to the polar opposite would ensure that you're far away from the curse as possible

Wow, that's a brilliant idea changing the name of the position to circumvent the curse.
I'm not 100% sure the Dumbledore would be able to change the name of the course. I got the impression that that curriculum name was used by several of the schools. Especially since the words "Defense Against the Dark Arts" is used in the title of several books in the universe as well. Not to mention I think he would have to go through the Ministry to get it changed. Don't they approve all school curriculum? Do they also believe that the position is cursed? Or do they think that that's just Dumbledore causing more problems?
The curse on the DADA post is really fascinating piece of magic. Your ideas about renaming the course could work but it all depends wonder how it worked. My theory is that when a moment comes that could cause the professor harm, it causes harm. Meaning that Ron's wand didn't have to backfire on Lockhart but the DADA curse made it so and when Snape was on a brink whether to expose Lupin or not, the DADA curse pushed him to do it.
It also depends what Dumbledore tried to against the curse. Officially we don't know but I've read in one fanfic where Dumbledore tried to move the classroom and the teacher's cabinet multiple times, pretend that he was the DADA teacher etc.
I also wonder how it worked. The most common theory In various fanfics is that Voldemort put it into the Hogwart's protective wards but once I've read a fanfic in which the curse was secretly written on Voldemort's DADA job application.
It's also a question why it ended; did Voldemort lift the curse after he took power, did it ceased to work when the subject was renamed to Dark Arts or was it lifted when Voldemort finally died? Because if it was the type of curse that could be lifted only by the caster or by the caster's death then the curse's continuation together with Snape's tattoo could persuade Dumbledore that Voldemort was still alive after the attack on Godric's Hollow.

This may have been addressed in a previous comment or video, but just in case i'll ask. I've always wondered why hadn't Dumbledore taught the subject himself for at least that year instead? Would he have if Lockhart hadn't been a problem? I haven't been able to figure out a reason for him to not have been teaching the subject up until book 4. But, even then it makes sense in my mind that he would even more so should want to teach the students himself.

I think it *is* more likely that either Rowling didn't think that far into it or she didn't think the readers would.
Not saying either scenario would be a bad thing, just that it happens a lot with fiction writing in general, it's tough for any writer to make a good story if they overanalyze every little detail, plus I don't think she really expected the HP series to become as popular as it ended up being.

Given that she was only prepared for a couple small books, yet managed to tie in so many things from the first 2 books to all the later books, that is very amazing. I was impressed reading it, well listening to the audio books...
@@SquirrelASMR exactly, if you take a look at any "beloved" work of fiction long enough you'll find plenty of plot holes and inconsistencies though that doesn't make the story any less interesting to the majority of those who read it, it certainly makes for a lot of fun speculation after the author has finished the story too.

In regards to your theory to bypass the curse remember voldemort is not stupid (strategically speaking) Its entirely possible that voldemorts curse targets ANY position that teaches Defence against the dark arts or how to protect against them and not having it tied to the name of the position (as for people saying that "But other positions sometimes teach defence against the dark arts" I mean In the official capacity of the position not acting as a secondary teacher whilst still holding the position of say charms or transfiguration professor)

It's funny, how Voldemort's curse can be used for the good of the wizarding world. (YES! I put Voldemort, curse and good in the same sentence to show how brilliant Dumbledore was.)
The curse definitely followed a recognisable pattern for the first five books. The DADA professors were all newcomers to the series, they all suffered some embarrassing revelation about themselves, and they all had to leave Hogwarts before the last day. Dolores Umbridge stayed at Hogwarts the longest, but still had to slink off the day before the end of term. Snape only broke the mould in that he was not a newcomer to the series and did come back to Hogwarts at a later date. Perhaps the curse was officially over when Dumbledore died? In any case, it was definitely over when Voldemort died.

Here's a question for the comment section. What if Harry, his friends, teachers, etc. were around in the 1920's when Grindelwald was the Dark Wizard? Could they defeat him or not?
Do they also have prime Dumbledore in this scenario? Because he soloed Grindewald obviously lol. If we say Dumbledore got defeated then I think Harry and company might have a fighting chance specifically because you included teachers. I think Grindewald might be even harder to defeat not because of power levels but because he actually is not afraid to die. He also wouldn't have an egomaniacal drive to eliminate Harry allowing him to focus on strategic objectives.
@@edwinbrown7179 Yes they have prime Dumbledore like we saw him in the crimes of Grindelwald. Although he would still need to destroy the blood pact which may be even more difficult to steal because Newt's pet isn't there to get it.
I think you may be overlooking one of the major reasons that Dumbledore hired Lockhart: he needed a DADA teacher, and Lockhart was the best he could find. When you have to get a new teacher every single year you start to run out of candidates after a while, and you take what you can get!

I think dumbledor wasn’t worried about that wasted year because he knew the order of the Phoenix was in place and they would have to speed up the kids training eventually
That wouldn't work because you omit the fact that Amycus Carrow did teached a variation of Defence against the Dark Arts (the course was about teaching how to use evil spells such as the Cruciatus curse.) and he didn't last a year either. So I don't think that changing the name of the class would nullify the curse. Even Harry, who teached DADA as an unofficial teacher didn't even last 6 months.
I can see your point as to why Dumbledore hired Lockhart, but I think he picked the teachers he did so that his students would learn life lessons on what kinds of people to look out for. It's better to learn that kind of stuff when one is young. Another thing is that not all students get along with each other so I'm pretty sure quite a number of them went to the library to learn a few spells. Lastly, as someone who went to public school, it wasn't too shocking to see good teachers go working elsewhere which didn't constitute inconsistencies. Good video, tho
Another way to get around the curse: get rid of DADA class and instead have Dark Arts Defense units in other classes, and then have an "Auror prep" course for NEWT students
I always thought the curse was tied to the name of Defense Against the Dark arts. I always figured Dumbledore could get a round it by renaming it to something like Anti-Dark Arts class or something.

The theory about abolishing the subject itself makes sence. Technically it should work I agree with you on that.

I feel that Dumbledore should’ve had more than enough authority and public influence to openly discredit Lockhart. It was rather low of him to waste his students education.
What could he do? Tell Fudge he was a fraud? He would hardly believe him. Fudge didn’t even believe Voldemort was back

Polyjuice into Lockhart and openly spout his falsehoods, forcing an investigation and public scrutiny. Or simply not hire the man to teach students. For starters.

Has this curse ever been revealed to be real? I remember Dumbledore saying one of his clever lines concerning the curse during the 6th book, but i never thought that he was taking that rumour serious
Dumbledore had little choice but to hire Lockhart for the 92/93 school year as no one else willingly applied or wanted the job. Only Lockhart wanted the job.
When you said the dada position was a "joke" I found this kind of interesting because I'm looking at it from a different perspective now. This might explain why Dumbledore hired the teachers on whichever years he did. Maybe he hired Remus for the purpose of Sirius's escape. I have no clue if that has anything to do with mistrust but Dumbledore had to be wondering if he really thought about it. Maybe he thought Remus might know something about how Sirius did escape, which Remus probably could have guessed.
For Mad eye, I think that Dumbledore was trying to find a loophole. Crouch jr said that Dumbledore asked him to only stay a year-- maybe that was a plan to see if he could prevent the teachers from being hurt but still have them leave at the end of the year. Obviously it did not work.
Umbridge doesn't count because the ministry sent her and we all know why snape was put as teacher in Harry's sixth year, that was part of the plan.
This was just something that came to mind.
He knew if he had to deal with him it would only be a year. Defense teachers never hold the job more than 1 year.
What about sacking the teacher before the end of the school year and rehiring them the following term? Or encouraging a teacher to resign before the end of the school year and then rehiring them in the case of someone like Lupin or the real Moody

Why did Dumbledore wait until after he knew that the last DADA teacher wasn’t coming back to replace that teacher? Did Dumbledore know that there was a curse on the position? If he did, why didn’t he have a list that he could just call the next one at the end of the year?
The first DAD teacher was Professor Quirrell who was killed at the end of Harry's first year. So Dumbledore needed a replacement.
So here’s my question, some curses/ hex’s/ spells last only as long as it’s caster lives ( Lillians goldfish for example) so with Voldemort dead does that mean the curse is lifted?

I think Dumbledore hired Lockhartt under the assumption that since he technically hired Voldemort as DADA professor the previous year the curse might have been broken. If it was, he could fire him at the end of the year and give the job to snape but if it wasn't, Lockhart was an idiot anyway so no harm.
I recall Hagrid saying that Lockhart's the only one to apply for the DADA post in CoS.

I assumed the spell broke once Voldemort died. Since he never technically died when he was “defeated” by Harry the first time the curse remained active. Powerful spells and curses are usually bound to the life of the wizard who cast them once they die the magic dies too, like the Body Binding Spell Dumbledore cast on Harry at the end of Book 6 which broke when he died. Rare instances like the Blood charm that kept Harry safe when he was with the Dursley’s also had a shelf life, since it broke when they parted ways for good or would have once Harry turned 17.

In Harrys "seventh year at hogwarts" The subjet was changed to only be named "Dark Arts" and the Carrow twins teached it if I'm not misstaken. They also lasted less than a year. coincidence? maybe or the curse deied with voldemort. My toughts
Alecto and Amycus were actually killed by severus when he was dueling with professor McGonagall in the great hall (in deathly hallows part 2) anyways so they were standing behind snape and he deflected a spell from minerva onto them

I think the biggest risk to students is if Lockhart started throwing his memory Charms around. The pixies were annoying but Hermione took care of them. Lockhart was made a fool by a twelve or thirteen year old Muggle-born! That going to make his name mud to the ruling families! He could have stopped the pixies with a simple immobulus.
One protection for the students could be a strict ban on memory Charms on students perhaps with a decree from Amelia Bones that it would be an imprisonable offence.
Your idea of overcoming the Curse on the DADA position by abolishing it and bringing it back under a different name is cleaver. Another Idea would be to have all his teachers take turns teaching it for one year only

But the curse itself is quite powerful. I mean, it's not like other spells we've seen where someone points a wand at you and your nose turns into a tomato.
This curse changes the circumstances to make it where the professor cannot last more than a year. That's quite powerful since each new professor would bring entirely new circumstances that would eventually work against him or her.
My question is this though: How many years had the course been cursed? And just how many professors came and gone during that time? I would like to know more about those professors.
What if Snape joined the marauders?
What if he would of wiped snapes memory when they dueled? The story may have gone a completely different way.
