I would say, in the books, their duel was NOT a stalemate. It seemed to me that Dumbledore was barely using 60% of his real abilities while Voldemort was giving it 110% but was still failing. In the end, Volde took to possessing Harry, rather than continuing a losing battle with Dumbledore.

Tom knew from the very first meeting at orphange that Dumbledore is someone who is strong, given his polite demeanor and "blue eyes x-raying" as if they can see right through him. Also, as he said love for humanity was missing from Voldy, which also didn't allow him to kill the infant Harry.
I wish they could have shown the book version of Hogwarts war. Harry didn't even snap the elder wand, and Voldy was killed in the great hall and died like a human, not flew into pieces like paper (but it was a good representation of his "one piece of soul" body)

Simple: Voldemort knew deep down that had Dumbledore never come to the orphanage to welcome him into the Wizarding World, he never would have known he was magic, he never could have reached the greatness he did.
And just like a child who KNOWS he did something to disappoint a parent, Tom behind the Voldemort persona could not stomach the knowledge that yes, Dumbledore could see through him. He couldn't bullshit/persuade Albus like he did everyone else. He had no true power over Albus -- and that scared him deep down.
I also think the resentment comes from the fact that Dumbledore COULD have achieved all those and more - but chose not to pursue the darkest of dark arts, (because of his broken love for Grindelwald and Arianna) and THAT, the non-pursueance of greatest power while having the ability to do so, is what Voldemort hated in Dumbledore...he didn't understand why Dumbledore didn't choose power and immortality.

4:24 you said Voldemort twice lol.
But I definitely agree with this. Dumbledore's greatest strength in his later years, was his humanity and ability to remain humble.
With someone with the threshold for power as Dumbledore, it would be very easy for one to slip towards the Dark Arts. Which he eventually did in his younger years. But his sisters death and relationship with Grindelwald had grounded him as he felt the "keen sting of love."

  • @rustydaboyrobot
    @rustydaboyrobot 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

Ambition was the only element Dumbledore gave up. He, instead, embraced love, acceptance, and forgiveness.
There isnt a "hidden power" as much as...love drives more completely than hate. And, with love comes SACRIFICE. Dumbledore had no problem sacrificing himself for "the new and improved 'greater good'" but he would not sacrifice his principles and morals. So, he avoided USING the darker magicks Voldemort craved...but. he knew HOW TO.
Having said all that to define their key differences, Dumbledore was just the better wizard. If this was 10 years earlier, there would be no need for Harry or the prophecy, Dumbledore would have added another Dark Wizard to his list of victories. As is, Dumbledore could fight EVENLY while holding back. And he KNEW it. If there was an instance of fear Harry could be harmed, would anyone doubt Dumbledore would have reverted to his countenance he conveyed when saving Harry from Barty Crouch Jr.? Of course, Dumbledore isnt perfect and Harry WAS in danger...but not really. Voldemort cannot handle true emotions, (and is an actual psychopath)...which is why the possession was very short lived. It was painful to FEEL. AND that's why Dumbledore always won. He was a much more complete wizard in every way.

By all means, go back to the 90's and tell JK Rowling on that train, the cafe where she wrote and elsewhere, as well as the directors, producers and writers how to do their jobs and why they haven't oversaturated a book series originally made for kids with an overwhelming amount of detail...all while staying within budget and release date timeframe...and appeasing editors, publishers and investors and an overly demanding, entitled fanbase...
Remember, as the READERS, we prediminantly see the world through Harry's eyes. A boy in Britain. It's even stated somewhere in book 4 that Harry hadn't given much thought to wizards in other parts of the world. Thus as readers, we didn't need to know that information - as it wasn't necessary to Harry's story and Harry's view of the world and his experiences.
Voldemort IS the greatest, Dark Wizard - there were many, but he out-classed them*. Prior to Voldemort, None had ever created more than ONE Horcrux, achieved broomless flight, etc.
The story is centric to them as they two were the only wizards KNOWN to the whole Wizarding World to achieve/experience what they did - aka SURVIVING the Killing Curse AND everything else I mentioned about Voldemort.
I've loved this series for the majority of my life but I don't scrutinize and over-analyze it to the point where I think I'm better than those who spent years behind the scenes.

I don't know, I think in toms mind, magic was a means to an end. Absolute power and immortality. And he lusted after magic and the dark arts as a result. While Albus truly loved magic itself. In its entirety as you said, not just as a means to an end. He had knowledge of the dark arts he chose not to use, despite having similar levels of ambition and a lust for power like tom. But loved the magical world as a whole and the wonder it held. Just look at his wonder, as he used his magic to restore the muggles home that slughorn had destroyed in his bid to remain undiscovered. His early experiences and losses came at great personal cost, and he realized that his unchecked ambitions could cost him dearly, as well as those he loved; yet he didn't hate magic for its role in Arianas death. He knew that, that cost was on him. And despite what he showed others, truly did grieve for her loss. And the the divide it caused between him and his loved ones. You could see that in the cave, but at the same time took that lesson and used it from that point on to temper his lust for power.
But in toms case, in his mind there was no cost too great, even abusing magic and destroying whatever he needed to destroy, in order to achieve his ambitions and desires. Even of it destroyed or threatened huge portions of the magical world, and the muggle world as well. His power and desire to live forever was the goal that trumped all. And as a result he overlooked key pieces of magic in his haste, that dumbledore no longer would. Also, dumbledore didn't limit himself to the darker powers as Voldermort mostly did, as he believed that love and light were a weakness. Used by weak wizards who limited themselves and shut out the dark. While dumbledoor studied the ancient magic and the arcane, and while he did not use them much, still knew and understood the darkness. And as a result, while he may have underestimated the degree of which tom was willing to go; wasn't surprised by the dark magic tom used in itself. Mainly just the extremes he was willing to go to. Like when he was searching for how many horcruxes tom was willing to make. He knew it was likely a horcrux, yet it was the number that he said he never would have imagined. As he knew the cost. At least that's how I see it.
I imagine there were still levels of magic that dumbledore could have easily used, in his battles with tom, that he purposely did not use. And after being cursed by the ring, in his unfortunate misstep, he knew it was only a matter of time before his death, and it would not be him that would finally end toms reign of terror. Thus he passed that task on to harry.

Dumbledore had the psychological edge, because he alone among everybody else always seemed to have information that Voldemort was surprised he had. As far as Voldemort was concerned, what he was doing he was doing in secret, but Dumbledore always knew who he was travelling with, he knew what parts of the world he had been to, even when they meet for the first time he knew that he had been stealing from other children and where he was keeping the items. Hence why they say, Dumbledore was the only one Voldemort ever feared, because he was the only one that had the edge on him magically, strategically, and psychologically. I mean, as far as Voldemort is concerned, Dumbledore‘s death and his Ascension to power was all because of his own genius, when Dumbledore is the one who put all the pieces in place to allow it to happen because he knew that the pieces needed to be put in place to allow Voldemort to be killed.

Voldemort didn't carry a neon sticker on him. Similar to the Second Wizarding War, he never was on the frontline, but rather at the back, commanding his Death Eaters that did the bidding for him, coming up front only when necessary. This further instilled fear among people as Voldemort had this sense of mystery to him. Dumbledore never really got a chance to 1v1 him, and even if he could, it was risky. Even though he could defeat Voldemort, the Death Eaters were constantly gaining power, and the light side couldn't afford his loss.

Simple: Voldemort himself stayed in hiding. Presumably the Ministry of Magic was sufficiently compromised by his loyalists that it could no longer effectively oppose him, thus the Order of the Phoenix was formed. It is unclear if the Ministry was ever actually taken over -- my guess is probably not. Notice how in the books, even after a complete takeover of the Ministry and Dumbledore dead, Voldemort stays in the shadows.

Just recently read book five. The way it’s written it definitely gives the impression Dumbledore is superior and would win in a prolonged duel or fight to the death. I think ‘toying’ is too strong a word though; the point of the duel to me was to establish Dumbledore had no fear of Voldemort whereas Voldemort did fear Dumbledore’s capabilities could surpass his own. That’s why he calmly walks forward.
At the same time, Voldemort is far too talented and powerful to “restrain” or “disarm.” You either end him or he’ll end you. Dumbledore wanted to make sure the Ministry officials saw him, and he said they’re are ‘other ways of beating a man.’ He knew hurting Voldemort’s pride and ego would be just as impactful, since that’s his biggest pitfall.

Disagree. Dumbledore DID unlock his potential, and it was because of his choice, turning away from power. His strength of character unlocked magicks Voldemort could never master. Dumbledore isn't a good man, hes this universe's Doctor. And theres a reason he has so many rules.

@@goldenrawan5937 as i said, sirius would win in harry potter series timeline. Lucius was said to be one of the highest ranked deatheaters in the first wizarding war, putting himself at a close rank with Antonin Dolohov. Antonin Dolohov overpowered mad eye in the department of mysteries and was gonna win against sirius if harry hadn’t body binded him from behind. Therefore, if lucius malfoy was as said, one of the deatheaters at the time, he would most likely have beaten sirius at that time.

Is it possible in some passive or indirect way that Dumbledore did in fact achieve greater power because of his obvious shift of purpose. That even if he didn't realize there was more to magic and continued to follow that path of brute power and achieved it. Would he still measure up to the man he became? That is to say when he suffered his tragedy and realized magic wasn't defined by power alone, is it possible or even probable that he ended up fulfilling his potential by simply shifting his focus to embrace all/remembering that there was more to life (magic) than egotistical desire. That'...is to say that while one could achieve great power like Voldemort', as far as achieving his (Voldemort's) potential, he really... didn't... achieve... shit... Okay, fine, he gathered immensely brutish power. BUT he still died: I'm hell bent on this message because Voldemort failed to understand, something, in my opinion, very simple, brute strength isn't everything, and everything else thats synonymous and dichotomous with that fact!!! For as capably BRILLIANT as he was suppose to be, he was a severely emotionally stunted imbecile!

It sneaks up on you, but you notice that Voldemort always goes for the killing curse and Harry is always defaulting to Expelliarmus. So too with Dumbledore, in the duel at the Ministry it's mostly defensive spells from Dumbledore and killing spells from Voldemort. Could that be part of the power that Dumbledore has over Voldemort? Life and defense over killing and harm?

"There was no hope of stealing the Philosopher's Stone anymore for I knew Dumbledore would have seen to it that it was destroyed. But I was willing to embrace mortal life again, before chasing immortality. I set my sights lower. . . I would settle for my old body back again and my old strength." ~Voldemort to the Death Eaters upon his rebirth. You'll notice he states that he set his "sights lower" implying he had plan to achieve something greater than just returning in his old body.

Theory: the reason that Dumbledore returns to Harry at Kings Cross is because he has become a Master of Death. Dumbledore had possession of all three Deathly Hallows in his lifetime. He knew each piece and what they were capable of, but how would he have accomplished it? Old magic, similar to Lily’s sacrifice. Dumbledore possessed all three DH. But he did what only the last of the three brothers did: relinquish the Hallow and accept death. He gave up each Hallow, either by gifting it to Harry, or choosing to die even when he had the Elder Wand and could have easily dealt with any Death Eater with ease.
Since Harry, in turn, has done all three and died before, it stands to reason he has the same magical status.

You can see some spells by wand being supported by hands for example in Dumbledore vs Voldemort duel. I wanna know if it was possible and how? Did it require being very powerful? Even if you won't find anything to create coherent narrative - just present any finding and source when this kind of casting is mentioned, create something like speculation & discussion video. Casting by hand - pleaseee!
