- Check out our full review of the Nexus 5, including our video review and comparisons, at Pocketnow: /2013/11/09/nexus-5-review (Full description below)
One is a unibody aluminum flagship launched almost a year ago, a hardware showboat built to bring unique audio and optical features to the Android world. The other is a minimalistic slab of "hardcore plastic" with the specs of a superphone but the price of a budget model, its entire purpose to showcase the very best of Google's handheld products and services.
So why are these devices, so far apart in time and targeting, being brought together for this comparison? Because each is top-tier, in its own way - and each is also sold in the Google Play Store.
Dive in, then, to Nexus 5 vs HTC One, our attempt to answer the question of whether BoomSound and beastly build quality is worth the extra Benjamins a branded flagship will run you, compared to Google's newest Nexus. Then swing on by our Nexus 5 vs Moto X comparison on your way to the latest Pocketnow Weekly podcast, where we spend most of the episode talking Nexus 5 with Brad Molen of Engadget. And stay tuned to Pocketnow for our full Nexus 5 review, coming just as soon as we can whip it together!

Like the Nexus 5 but love the HTC One!
#HtcOne #Nexus5 #Android
I used to have a HTC ONE but hated it because the battery and camera sucks. Now I'm watching this on my nexus 5.
The HTC One is nearly 9 mos old and it still puts a beatdown on its latest competition! Love my One! I still get compliments to this day for how it looks and how it sounds. BOOM!
Two of the best phones this year, bar none.
Thank you for finally making this video. I've been searching for a comparison between these two since the Nexus 5 officially launched.
ny preference in order
1. nexus 5
2. z1
3. note 3
4. g2
5. htc one
sorry but im going with the newest hardware and software + pure android beats any other flashy software cough cough samsung
I had the LG G2 when these where new (and the G3 after that). I liked G2 better than all the rest. Battery life is still the best I had on a phone to this day. Yes, they had a bit more "flashy software" inspired a bit by Samsung. But it was great and had more features I used built in than stock Android could bring. Samsung at the time had way too much stuff. Today in 2019 it's another story :P
I have the Note 10+ today.
keep up the good work on these reviews, I don't know how I missed them all this time but I like the unbiased review and nice, clean breakdown
I'm looking forward to the N4 vs N5 review :)
Thanks, Daniel! That one is uploading as we speak! ^MF
Oh thanks! Looking forward to it Pocketnow :-)
Always enjoy Michael's reviews !! Thanks for the comparison 👍
I'm making this comment before the video even plays. I'd bet my paycheck that it will be pointed out that the poor quality speaker of the Nexus doesn't even compare to HTC's Boom Sound.
I really love HTC One, I got mine from Amazon and I saw they are on sale now : amzn.to/1coNDCn
Always great videos from you Michael.
Great review, thanks a lot pocketnow. Looking forward to reading your Nexus 5 review.
your reviews are awesome ! good job
The s4 was only really a success over the htc one because of samsungs popularity. For me the htc one is better than the s4 for loads of reasons
The same goes for me.
I've been using Apple's products since 07' and the only reason why I've changed my mind about IOS is the HTC ONE. I'm so in love with it. I love that beautiful design, I love HTC Zoe, Blinkfeed, everything. It's just an amazingly beautiful phone !
Always the best reviews Michael!! I don't change my htc one for nothing!!
Amazing videography, Pocketnow! Love it. :)
Thank You for the review!!
Your reviews are good...
I'm looking forward to the Nexus 5 vs Xperia Z1 review
very professional Review really stand out above the others and very objective too...
keep up Michael
Great comparison vid :-)
Wooooow the sound in the htc one is awesome!!!
You're an idiot! It sound horrible compared to any speaker! FACT!.. they both sound horrible but it takes two seconds longer before you want to throw the HTC out the window!
SquirrelFromGradLife i own the htc one and the speakers are not that bad.
SquirrelFromGradLife Everyone can have their own opinions about their sound, I don't insulted you, so I ask that you respect the views of others.
Interesting comparison. I've got the HTC one and was thinking of moving to the nexus 5. Think I'll think some more and wait.
Nice comparison as always
Do you mind sharing this Wallpaper ??
Excellent review as always.
Will you guys being doing a comparison between the Nexus 5 and the Sony Z1?
Thank you, best review I have seen yet. I will purchase an HTC One :D
This is gonna be a good comparison. Thanks Pocketnow!
Where do you get that wine glass background ?
I wish the nexus 5 had the dual front facing speakers as well
Yeah, me too! >:(
This is what I needed wasn't sure if I should sell my htc one to buy the nexus 5, I guess I'm sticking with my one
Awesome video very professional well produced good job!
Great vid but unsure what go for. I was a proud owner of a Sony eperia z1 until I was robbed at work yesterday, so now looking for a replacement handset and narrowed down to these two phones.
I know that it doesn't really matter now but I think this was before the 4.4.1 update and on that update the camera improved a lot.
Nice comparison!
I love that you guys don't do "which phone is better" but "which phone is better for YOU". Sense UI and stock Android are so different and you guys did justice to them. Props.
As always you make some great videos that inform consume choice. Thanks!
I love the beats audio that enhances the bass on my HTC one. Are there any apps I can get that do the same thing on the nexus?
Great video! Still love my HTC One for that aluminum body.
How can you tell which HTC One has the original internal microphones? If I went to the store right now and bought an HTC One, would it have the sub par new microphones?
The sound in the htc one is fantastic. Believe i have a htc one.
Finally u change ur eye glasses!!! Nice review!!!
thumps up for nexus 5 vs lg G2
Thanks for the video you guys are the best
+1 for playing Pinback on speaker test
I really like your rewiews!
Thinking of getting one of these 2 phones as an upgrade from my moto g. Love the HTC's build quality and feel. Yet the guaranteed software updates and better specs for the nexus seem to sway me.
I have an iPhone 5. I used to have an HTC One back in July, but it was actually a demo phone (therefore the software wouldn't update) so I sent it back to Amazon for a full refund. I did love the phone, but I remember the music app's layout being awfully cumbersome. Is it worth switching back? I love its screen and speakers.
like your video... however, I'm still on the fence... If the 32GB/full black Nexus5 was readily available I would have had one by now. Over the past months new models have popped up and now the M8 is really peaking my interest... can you do and M8 vs Nexus5 review please
I have been looking for this question for a long time with no answer. Can you please tell me how to fix my iPhone 5 camera, when I use the flash the pic's come out pinkish.. please help, your videos are awesome
Which would you recommend on the Sprint network? Lg g2, nexus 5, htc one or moto x.
Based on camera, speed performance, call quality and battery life. Please advise. Upgrading next week.
Thank you
thank you Michael for the great comkparison AGAIN...just want to point out that the Google Now always on integration is going to stay officialy exclusive for the Nexus 5 (acording to Google)
Nice review!
This is one of your best. A balanced and informative piece, particularly the focus on seeing past the specs and helping potential buyers understand the actual experience. That said, I suspect for many it will be price that is the major factor, off contract at least...I might have been tempted to make the significance of this gap more apparent earlier in the video. The relative value of the Nexus 5 is extraordinary, not just compared to other Android devices, but across the whole mobile landscape. Can't deny, however, the finish of the One is tempting even at nearly twice the price.
love your videos man
i would think most people would say samsung galaxy s4 over HTC one most main stream people dont no who or what HTC is you never see them on tv like you do iphone or windows phone or even samsung
Will honestly older people in general will never understand smart phones and just go by what's on the TV in commercials like the iPhone in samsung galaxy phones because there more popular might not be the best but this is the truth not everyone is a tech nerd ***** 99 percent of people just want the phone to work and work well they don't care about tricking it out
true bro
It's not that the s4 is just more mainstream, its that HTC doesn't market their phones aswell. India being the booming market it is for high end smartphones is dominated by Samsung and Apple because no one even knows that theirs a new HTC phone out that blows those two up there out of the water. HTC needs to get its ads in gear and market the phones.
Popat Panchat i agree they dont market alot
trever pitts it makes me sad that a company with such an eye for detail and meticulous design isn't known world wide. They should really market the hell out of the their phones. Do what Apple does, release one flagshipband put all your marketing budget on that phone rather than releasing so many phones that the average Joe or Jane is so confused that the y just end up buying the iPhone, to be honest, if I didn't have a passion for technology and didn't watch or read media on phones etc. I wouldn't know anything about HTC because I haven't even seen a single ad for the one m8 since its release.
HTC ONE is so damn cool, have it for 6 months now, really great using experience.
What an excellent review comparison thank you . I have the HTC 1 and I just bought the Nexus 5 for my partners Birthday ( gift) she does Google business pictures for local and independent business for the kind of use she'll need from her phone I thought this would be an improvement on her iPhone . Wow these phones run circles on iPhone. In fact to be honest , it's nuts to compare iPhone with these , they are very different and it all depends on what you want ? I suppose.....
nice video as always
let's hope there'll be a nexus 5 vs note 3 comparison
Hey Michael, how can I make my hair looks like yours?
He is right. The screen on the nexus 5 is really unnaturally warm. I'm just trying to figure out if this is a defect or of it was intended.
I dont speak english very well. Can you guys yell mr what did he say between 2:55 and 4:00 about the software ? Which one is better. Did he say something about updates to android 4.4 kitkat to htc one ? pls answer i dont know what to buy.
I easily get a full day with my nexus 5s battery. I wouldn't switch this phone for anything right now. Nexus never disapoints!
Nexus 5 is the king of Android! :)
Another great comparison video! Looking forward to the next one! The only issue I have is with the analysis of the screens. The HTC One has too much blue in it. In terms of color, the Nexus 5 is actually more accurate in terms of color temperature.
i can't decide between the one the g2 and the nexus 5. they're roughly the same price in my country, what do you guys think ?
what apps do you use to compare the colour saturation?
I sold my very loved HTC One, for my now very loved Nexus 5. I enjoy a change in user experience. As long as the interface isn't crammed with bloatware.
great comparison...
wait howd you guys get the jellybean easter egg on your htc one at 2:55? i can't get it on mine cuz i can't click on jelly bean 4.3....
Mr. Fisher makes the best Pocket Now vids!
Will be getting the nexus 5
One and Nexus 5! My two most favorite phones out there!!
Where can you get the cups wallpaper?!
I have the HTC One and just ordered my Nexus 5. I love the One for it's design and speed. This is my 1st nexus device; always wanted one but I never liked any of LG builds versus Samsung and HTC. Looking forward to using KitKat and having a pure Google experience. These will be my goto devices; I like to switch up when I'm bored with one. I sold my GN3; that device sucks to me. Love the big screen though. Oh well.
Can you make a comparison with the Samsung Galaxy S4 ??
Hey! If today i wana BuY a new high end phone.. Than which 1 it should be... Htc one, nexus 5, note 3, iPhone 5s or any.... I want it to be allrounder... Plzzz reply..
Initial indepth screen testing suggest that colour accuracy is actually extremely accurate on the Nexus 5, but many reviewers think it is "washed out". I think this is because they have become accustomed to the colour saturation boost OEMs use (yes, even the HTC One).
Ok I really need some help here...
Right now I'm using Nova Launcher because I hate TouchWiz on my GS4 and this is my first Android device and now I want to try the "pure android experience" (without rooting).
I don't know if I should buy the HTC Google Edition (whick I think is gorgeous and will have KitKat) or the Nexus 5.
What do you think I should do? Thanks.
do a nexus 5 vs lg g2 i want to know if the price difference is worth it
strong htc bias
Just got my nexus 5 from the states....torn between which one I like better....
Great video as always. I am selling my one having bought the nexus but am having some second thoughts.
The sound on the HTC one is so so good. TH-cam experience is better or when at home I would play music through the speakers, the nexus really can't compete.
The build of the one is gorgeous but without insurance I am forced to case it which loses the benefits of such quality feel in the hand.
I hope in the long run with a camera software fix and instant Android updates the nexus5
should i wait for the HTC M8 or get the N5? ty
I'm still using a HTC Mozart one of the launch windows phone 7 phones and I really need to upgrade. The Nexus looks amazing but then I worry about getting my contacts over and if I can still use hotmail rather than using google features. Or I just get an iphone because I own an ipad and all my apps come over.
I've read that you can move contacts from from WP7 to Android through hotmail and gmail. As for using hotmail as email, you can do that simply by using a basic email app. Just not the gmail app
Hey Mike why don't you like the,Nexus 5? My mother has is it, I think its an excellent device. Plus it's affordable! But I must add that my Moto x is more function.
Excellent review like always !
I think that the One is still a great phone :) and we sure agree there!!
Does anyone know what that lock screen or background image is that is on the Nexus 5 around the 3 minute mark?
GOOD REVIEW-MANY THANKS-PEACE. XX
if you dont use the phone, would it be possible to give it to me?
Luvin my HTC One...both of them!
Another awesome vid =)
What was that thing running on Nexus 5 at 2:56?
@h3wlett, scteen scratches within 2 years? It came out a month ago.
Would want either ome
If i have to look at a android phone with a verry verry good camera, and please don't say the lumia 1020 what would you advice?
Any thoughts about screen burn.... The screen of my Galaxy Nexus of almost 2 years is getting worse and worse....
It's funny because I have a friend who owns a HTC One M7, and I have a Nexus 5. He's always complaining about his phone being ridiculously slow when opening apps like Messaging (SMS) and Facebook. Meanwhile my Nexus 5 screams through the Android 5.0 UI, no slow downs here.
Humza Ahmed my htc m7 is fast in everything
These two are the best Android phones out for me. I have the Nexus 5 and love it. The Nexus is cheaper than the HTC, faster, bigger and has the latest software but I love the HTC's design and speakers. Top two Android phones.
I just bought the nexus 5. Should I exchange it for the HTC one
