I just bought the 2013 Mini Cooper Roadster S and I love this car! Is so much fun and a head turner.
Damn fine review, mate.One of the most spot-on anywhere on the net. I've been living with this very car for a week now as a loaner from my local MINI dealership while my daily driver is in their shop, the only difference being that the loaner roadster is a 6-spd S model instead of the auto. The car is brilliantly satisfying to drive-in every way that matters. The SF Bay Area where I live is full of Porsches and other high-performance German cars. I could go faster in a Boxster S, but I could NOT be having more fun than I am now. It's totally addictive. Everything else pales by comparison.

Runflat tires have a VERY stiff sidewall (which allows you to keep driving on them when they're flat) and can transfer that lack of cushion into the driver's cabin pretty well. MINI use run flats because there's no spare tire (saves weight), but every time I've replaced the tires, I replace them with regular tires and keep a can of instant sealant in the boot for flats. The ride is less harsh then.

Great video! Really interesting to see someone delve into the history of Mini especially since a lot of critics are complaining about the brand losing its identity with all the new models. I can understand the criticism when it comes to the Countryman... maybe... but the Roadster, to me, is spot on Mini. I also liked the thoughts on JCW vs S, I wish someone would talk about the regular Roadster, is it any good? Inquiring minds would like to know!

Youre right about the stiffness. While I do not have the jcw I do have the convertible cooper s with 17 inch rims and I have skipped sideways when turning over a manhole cover or uneven roads.
Looking to find a better rim tire combo when its time to replace
***** that said however, the handling is excellent to the point of scary for passengers :) as they cannot initially comprehend how this thing grips to the road. One topic I rarely see covered in reviews is the overall performance has to be at or near the top in relation to gas consumption. I get great gas mileage while enjoying driving with a heavy foot, something I didn't consider when purchasing. I've got a friend with a very nice performance vehicle but he seldom drives it and admittedly because of the increasing cost of gas and terrible mpg. Whats the point?
+A Dub yes i have a mini coupe and when i hit bump the steering shakes and i lose control for a min. also i kinda feel the road a lot ,i wish its less noisy

Nice review. No point ever mentioning the old mini in any review the two are oceans apart and share nothing apart from the name. Both are great fun cars.
What is bad about the run flats? I'm considering getting the roadster S
Yes, they really ARE that good. I'm assuming that since this will be your first car, it will also be your ONLY car, at least for a good while. With that in mind, go for the S over the JCW. The JCW has more hp, but unless you're going to spend a lot of time at the track, the tradeoff between more horses and harsher ride isn't worth it, IMHO. You'll appreciate the slightly softer ride of the S in your daily driving. Oh, and I've got a Coupe now. FUN car!

While opting out of the sport suspension and runflat tires will soften up your JCW, the base car is still more harsh than an S or a base model. There are differences in the JCW suspension in general, sport susp just increases it even further. Great for the track, not great over normal, less-than-smooth roads.

Unfortunately, they have scrapped the Rocketman. That was pretty much the final piece of the puzzle that made me go with the Roadster, since I was holding out for the Rocket. I'm sure I'll love the Roadie just as much, though. It's on a ship now and should be in my driveway around May 11! Woo hoo!

They shouldn't make minis with an automatic, lol. That takes all the fun out of driving. So I gave it a thumbs down. But the kid id a great job.
I purchased this piece of crap 6 months ago and I've had nothing but problems. They have replaced multiple parts on a 2012 car. Don't buy this car.
