Gambling addiction can often leave us with a feeling of a wasted life. We don't have or haven't achieved what we wanted. Maybe things aren't as bad as we think.
Thanks for watching, my name's Phil and I'm a former gambling addict. I make videos to share my experiences of gambling and talk about my recovery, abstinence and the challenges of quitting gambling. I also tend to ramble on about anything else that comes to mind and take great pleasure in dispelling some of the most common myths around gambling.
If you found this video interesting then check out the channel and consider subscribing (it would mean a lot). If you are struggling with a gambling problem then hopefully my videos will help but I strongly recommend getting some proper help from the guys below (I'm no expert, just someone who has 'been there, done that and got the t-shirt...(no) merch link in bio'.

I've become homeless and have been so for the past 3 years because of gambling. I go to work every day don't drink, smoke or do drugs but i have lost everything i have made working because of gambling. I'm still living in my car but have $ 4,000 dollars in my pocket because i haven't gambled for the last 8 weeks. It's not much or very long but it's a start. I deal with temptation but as each day goes by and every dollar I put in my savings is driving me to never go back the a casino.

    This is so true!
I lost every bit of fortune I ever made (over £1 million) through my late 20s, and my entire 30s, into my early 40s because of gambling, and ended up in a literal mountain of debt, and almost ended up completely homeless.
It ruined relationships, friendships, broke trust, and destroyed basically everything.
Make NO mistake, GAMBLING RUINS LIVES!

From May to September I was clean and then I lost all my money and money my grandfather gave me to pay for a surgery I needed and to pay for school. I lost 2700€ in 5 days. In reality no1 is born a drug addict/alcohol abuser/gambler this is a inspirational video Yes it is but really need to look at the root of the problem... This addictions we are hooked on are no different than any medicine that's used for pain... Only difference is the pain of what ever we individuals have is inside of us.. Stumbled across this video. Very wise words and well-expressed. I think it could apply to any kind of crutch or addiction that people use to compensate for their feelings of not being enough. IMO, life boils down to a simple equation. Happiness = Reality - Expectations. It’s the unrealistic expectations created by things like social media that makes so many people miserable. The best things in life are the things that cost nothing - health, security, good friendships, nature etc. A gigantic cliché, but nevertheless, a truth.

Winning doesn’t even feel good anymore… Thank you Phil for this video. Today is the day I’m going to attempt to quit gambling. I need to do a little more research, but I’m tired of this addictive feeling.

Materialism is one of the reasons we gamble, striving for financial achievements. Assets have no true value, as long as we have health and freedom, we're winning at life.
Success isnt measured by our bank balance, it's judged by our character and the impact we have upon others.

As much as I agree, it’s not entirely true. We live in a materialistic world. Every one of us has looked at someone else’s life and wished it was theirs for even a day. Couple that with how terrible the economy is, bad job market, high home prices, and you get a lot of people living in despair so they go to the casino to escape reality because sometimes it’s depressing thinking about the future

    • @summan41man
      @summan41man 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@SAsh-zg6ln You just described materialism.
Materialism is what we must escape from and casinos aren't the solution they're very much part of the problem. Striving for a perceived material comparison is unattainable, as we can only ever be ourselves. Be true to yourself, avoid false temptation and recognise what is truly important. Winning is a measurement of success, which is an accomplishment of purpose, our ultimate purpose in life is to sacrifice, we need to realise how we impact others and the world around, and behind us. We're not so important that our needs and desires must come first.

Such a good talk. I live near a casino (Pechanga) and I'll go in, walk around, and just watch people. It just defies logic. But the last time I went (a few days ago) will be my last. People come with others, but in short order, their friend is the slot machine they are playing. No communication, just the stillness of the machine and the sucker playing. And Phil nailed it, the biggest loss of all is time. It's the mundane, and the simple pleasures in life that makes up the sum total of life. It's not the highs of hitting it big gambling. It's like judging one's happiness on a scale from one to ten--we shoot for 10, but 5 is actually good enough.

Thanks for your comment Mike. It’s so true, gambling is sold as an exciting, social activity but it’s tedious and lonely. We get the dopamine hit which makes the brain think we’re having “fun” but, if we take that dopamine away, we’re playing a boring game. It’s wonderful to rediscover pleasure in the simple things. It's been awhile now that I've dug myself out of the hole.
Still at times I play once in awhile and surprisingly I win.
But what helps me is being honest with my wife when I do things. I leave when I am up and just stop playing for awhile and go back a few months later.
The self-control and being conscience of what is happening when I gamble is crazy.
But there are times when I know I make that extra bet when I said I would stop. Then I reflect and think about what that is. In my experience that feeling is literally the devil inside my head almost hoping for the self-destruction button to click.
    It's a scary thought really.
But accepting it for what it is and being honest with yourself and those closest to you about this thing called gambling day to day, then it should help because it helps me.
God bless everyone out there. When your down and out always remember that you're not alone. The sun will rise again. You have time. You're not a failure.
I hit rock bottom with no prospects and now I have a beautiful wife, 2 children and a great job.
    Never give up.

Life is much more than money , your mental health is so much more important.

I started gambling at 16 with scratch cards, (laws in the uk have changed, it's now illegal to buy scratch cards and lottery tickets under 18). I'm 24 now and I feel like I've wasted what were suppose to be the fun years of my youth addicted to this stuff. The thing that keeps me chained to this compulsion is the sunk cost fallacy, I keep telling myself that if I stop playing, I won't have a chance at winning, and if I don't win, then I will never be compensated for those years I lost. what pisses me off isn't the dept I'm in, it's the time I've lost, the friends I distanced myself from and the family members I hurt. Thanks for these videos, I don't really feel comfortable talking to anyone in person about this issue since I feel so ashamed. My feet are starting to touch the ground more nowadays, I think it's because I'm turning 25 and starting to watch people I use to know get serious about their lives, I'm starting to see my gambling habit for what it really is, a time stealer.

The best part is, in the U.S. the winner doesn't get the whole payout. The federal government takes 28% of all winnings over $600. Federal lotto could run a 1:600 chance of winning 600 and take 28% of all winnings in tax.

I have enormous respect for gambling addicts that have eliminated gambling from their lives. I am Bipolar and periodically suffer from psychosis and my experience of addiction was through using illicit substances and abusing or misusing prescribed medications such as Valium.
My condition means that have periods of extreme mood which can lead to a break with reality: I consider myself blessed because I live in a time where I can design treatment regimes that minimise the harms of my condition.
Gambling has no such interventions. I believe that gambling addiction is the biggest mental health issue facing young men in particular and it is almost exactly like a mania and psychosis episode. People with gambling addictions have huge psychological hurdles to navigate on their recovery journey and they deserve proper support, proper treatment and guidance to eliminate gambling from their lives.

Phill I’ve tried to stop many times. My longest run is 4 months only gambling free,
I’m a 34yr old man and been doing my conkers ever since I was 18, friends, relationships, family lost due to this cancerous so called hobbie. I’ve been watching your videos the past few weeks but is there really light at the end of the tunnel? My will power is zero, I hate losing my money but my head loves gambling, just makes no sense. The only thing I’ve got from gambling is debt up until I’m 43 lol paying monthly with step change, what a truly sad sadddd sad existence.
This sounds stupid but can you stop with very little will power, in general have zero. I hate this inevitable monthly addition
And yeah I’m only here cause it was payday and lady and I’ve done my conkers but still horrible hole. Any advice be massively appreciated off anybody! Thanks from Adam

Gam-stop works. Bans you from everything. Unless you're someone who walks into the bookies on the high street. But then you can spend a day ring them up asking them to not let you in. Good luck

In Canada, the introduced something called a "Tax Free Savings account" Every year you can contribute $5,000 Dollars to it... $250 every two weeks on pay day. Don't even notice it missing for the most part.... I did not partake, because I'd rather gamble.... fast forward a few years.... the people that maxed out thier TFSA every year are sitting at $88k and I have nothing.... thier compound interest is killing it and I'm slinking around the shadows wondering how I can get from here to there... the answer is literally $250 every two weeks. Or $125 a week. Or $20 a day. Think about that before buying that coffee or pack of smokes ya!!
    Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

I don't know you mate but great video with some really well expressed thoughts people need to hear. Keep up making these videos and don't let anyone knock you off the path. If you think about it this way your TH-cam channel has probably already helped more people than nearly everyone with a Lamborghini and a mansion working for a private company - and if that is not a measure of a successful life then what else is?

35 years old, nearly paid off my end of terraced house, and saving for retirement (approx £80k). Not bragging at all, but if you set your mind to it, you can achieve anything. It's not all about money or material things (I drive a 2017 berlingo everywhere), but being financially stable will give you freedom later on. Best advice, build a good career where you can be useful to others, and try to pick something you enjoy. Stay away from pubs, drugs, toxic people and focus on you. Facebook and Instagram will destroy your mental health and distract you from your goals. They are designed to create envy. Time is your mist valuable asset. Don't waste it. Start early. Remember there is no shortcut or easy route.

From 7:10-10:00mins is so true from my perspective.
I instantly subscribed on such thoughts.
The hardest thing for me was filling my time during the early stages of quitting just like with alcohol addiction.
All your mates are in the bar at a certain time after work yet you have to be away from the bar or any social setting because it’s too much to watch them drink and get drunk whilst you just stay being “normal” and sober
You don’t really suffer from alcoholism until you get sober! xxx

Recovered gambling addict here. Fortunately, I stopped quite early in my life, at 24, but from 18-24 it was REALLY ugly, I'm talking about a couple quid left on the bank account with a week to go of the month, sticking it in the pokies for a hail-mary -ugly. I'm now 28, and apart from a lapse a year or so ago, I've been free for 4 years. My life is immensely better, and I am starting to work up a bit of a savings, a rainy day fund if you will. I hope you guys are doing good :)

Yeah my dad wasted his life because he was gambling. He was losing his monthly salaries all the time and was laying to my mom that his boss didn't pay him up. It has a massive impact on everyone in the family. Terrible addiction on the same level as alcoholism.

When I was a boy,, every Saturday my Father would put a bet on a Horse !!! I never recal him ever being joyful and saying he had Won !!!! I thought he was Daft. So when I started earning money I bought things that I wanted !!!! I don't drink or smoke !!!! I always realised that I would always lose at Gambling. I am 69 yrs old now and never married and I have been able to buy anything I wanted. I am not rich and I never spent money on Cars. I had a few Motorbikes which I maintained myself. I have always been terrified of becoming homeless, so Gambling was completely out of the Question !!!!! I've had friends who gambled everything away. But they would always say that they would Win one day. I always said No you won't and I was always right !!!! I was a Security Guard in a Holiday camp when a Girl member of Staff won. £200 from a slot machine !!!! I pleaded with her to take the money and buy herself something nice. But she put every penny back into that same machine !!!!

I think it's helpful to remember that everybody loses everything they ever worked for anyways at death, even if they didn't gamble it away. The only things we get to keep upon resurrection (according to scriptures) are the things we store up inside ourselves (virtues, wisdom, things learned). So yes as Phil is saying, we should be measuring success based on our personal improvement over time, not based on how big the number we see when we log into bank account.

If you can't control your gambling the you shouldn't do it. Yes its easy to go down that rabbit hole and not be able to get out of it. I know that I only gamble what I can afford to lose. My stop loss is $500 to $600 and once that happens I dont play for months. I spread out my gambling playing time bc I know that the longer and the more you play the bigger the chances are you become addicted. I look for "opportunities" to make money gambling (whether its Blackjack or Roulette) at the right time. Once I make a quick profit, $700, $1000 or more I get out. Wish you the best Phil. Thank you for sharing your story.

    • @blackjackhammer21
      @blackjackhammer21 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@geraldramos5770 NO I have lost before and gone on a losing streak. The difference between you and me is that I STOP and dont play for months at a time then when I start winning any losses I incurred I get back. Example: I just won recently over $3k in two sessions but last week lost $550. I never cashed out all of my winnings bc I left about $300 combined in two of my accounts. So I am really down $250 which I can win back quickly and make up the difference. IF I lose the $300 extra I will not play for another two or three months. Thats HOW I stay in control. I am not a compulsive gambler bc when I lose and Im at my stop limit I dont play again for a while.
