We're proud to have Dan Trolaro as a key member of our team, and whether it's the first time or the 501st time, it can never be easy to share a story like his, and in such a public manner like this. He and our other lived experience staff play a vital role in our US operations, most prominently in educating student-athletes via NCAA colleges, hopefully preventing others from being affected by problem gambling.
We hope this story will help others who find themselves in a similar situation to the one that Dan describes and hope that the support pages that can be found via our company website will be helpful for anyone needing to know where they can turn for help.

My sponsor still gambled and went to prostitutes for the first 5 years of his sobriety. He described himself as a sober horse thief because he was siphoning money from his payroll withholding to do that. Then he decided he really wanted to get serious about sobriety. Yeah an addict can get addicted to ANYTHING.

There’s a lot of similarities. It struck me when he talked about the normalization from adults to kids. I remember when I was younger, I had friends whose parents would let us party at their house (and buy us alcohol), and other friends whose parents would place bets for us every Sunday. We were 16 years old drinking and gambling regularly! That was just having fun to us and the adults were actively making it happen for us.

I've known you since undergrad and you remain the dearest of friends. Watching this and reading through the comments brings back a lot of memories and stirs a lot of emotion. There was a long period of time - years - when I didn't recognize you. When all of this came out it explained so much. Then, I witnessed first-hand the fallout and ALL of the collateral damage. I visited you in prison. I've been watching you do the work for years now. I've seen your contrition. I am profoundly proud of you and your recovery. I gamble online sometimes and other times at the casino. My wife and I always have spending limits when we go to the casino. The thing that keeps me from getting addicted is the fact that that the odds are stacked against the player. When he mentioned that he felt relief when he gambled his last dollar that really confused me. I always felt bad when my money was gone but I realized it is just entertainment. When I gamble online it is mostly poker and again I don't spend much on it because I hate the feeling of losing. I was always confused by the fact that Americans aren't allowed to put real money on some online poker sites. It just seems like common sense to have a spending limit.

I'm from NJ and moved back when Covid hit because my job ended and I could live for free. The worst decision of my life by far as it led to a gambling addiction due to NJ having online casinos. In a hole financially, stuck at home with nothing to do and the option to win "quick money" was a recipe for disaster.
I think a few years from now we are all going to be smacked in the face with just how many people developed addictions with either gambling, drinking or drugs in that year where we all were forced to stay home and had minimal entertainment.

Right now I live in a state where I can do online sportsbook, but for whatever reason, I know my limits when it comes to that. I guess it has something to do with the fast paced nature of the casinos and the ability to win big in a short amount of time. One of my first times playing I turned $200 into 2k in less than a hour. Probably the worst thing that could've happened looking back cause I easily gave back 10 times that much. 2 years later I'm still paying it off. Good luck man.

I was a NJ gambling father child too. He convinced me that i had a gift for the numbers, and the Meadowlands and the horses were a big high for the both of us, as was the Black Jack at Atlantic City. He gambled away his entire fortune, and the end of his life was very sad indeed. My dad was a very sensitive and emotionally vulnerable person, who was raised by a very critical mother. He made a sizeable fortune, which i believe he gambled away because he always felt he needed to have more with which to impress his mom.

Great speaker! Very interesting video! He is a lovely man. I am Canadian. A member of my family is an addictive gambler. His wife is my sister. She has cut me out of her life. Last time I saw her was when I was in the hospital with breast cancer. That was in 2001. I know part of why she ignores me is bc she is ashamed and embarrassed. I don’t blame her at all for feeling that way. We do live 6 hrs. Apart, but still. Her husband is Greek and he saw his parents lose their home among many other things. My brother-in-law has below average intelligence as does my sister. Not terribly bad. but lower IQ’s. They both, of course went to normal schools, etc. They have borrowed money from everyone in my family. When I found out that it was bc of a gambling addiction I cut the money off. Very shortly after she broke off all contact. One of the worse things of all was SHE had to call and ask. He is a low life coward. They life in Niagara Falls and my sister works at the casino there. They have 3 kids, one of which is wheelchair bound. They have lost everything and I believe now that they have lost their house too. They have claimed bankruptcy at least once. My sister is very weak minded. She has been controlled by her husband her whole time with him. I don’t know how she can keep staying with him. I don’t know how she can handle this situation and for so long. I mean, I guess it is hard having a handicapped daughter who needs to be lifted up for certain things. She is 39 years. Anyway, life goes on. I am very proud of you! Thanks for helping others who are struggling with this.

Definitely one of your best interviews ever, it helps of course that he hasn't been saddled with the psychological, mental faculty, and physical issues associated with drugs or alcohol, and apparently Street living should included in that, nor does he seem to have been seriously impacted by a lot of the mental health imalances and related mental health medication cocktail issues ETC that you see also with a lot of the people in the population that you quite often are dealing with. So of course he was kind of ahead of the curve when it comes to a lucid interviewee, but nonetheless it was a nice change of pace as well to get the occasional interviewee who is so clear and so focused and has a lot of good things to say. That's not to say there isn't tons of value in all the different types of people that you interview, but a guy like Dan is definitely a slight change of pace and although gambling addictions not necessarily something that I have a huge interest in, I found his story very compelling because of Dan himself.
