When I was a child, my dad ( gambling addict ) took me and my brothers to casinos, bingo halls, etc. We had to stand outside of the rope, where the gambling machines were. At bingo, he even let me dob the cards as a 10 - 11 year old. It was a different time back then and I think he knew the owner. So they let me do that. Anyway, putting a naive, impressionable, easily manipulated child in that environment is hideous. Two of us three brothers became massive gambling addicts, as soon as we were of age. Not a coincidence obviously. I have a ton of debt right now and it makes me sick. Wish he had waited for mom to come home from work, then go gamble by himself. Leave us kids out of it. What a horrible addiction. Absolutely financial obliterating, stressful, depressing, life destroying illness 😭

I hear ya, Josh. I come from a family of gamblers. I wish I had never stepped inside a casino at 20 y.o. In my late 40s now, and don't have anything to show for it. I can't recall how much I've lost over the years. Hopefully my Mom doesn't become the addict I am.

My mother died and dad was lonely sitting at home. He was successful his entire life and worked very hard for 50 years. He invested well and owned many properties.
He went into a casino because of loneliness and within 5 years, he was flat broke. He lost over 5 million dollars chasing companionship and entertainment and mostly to regain his losses. He killed himself at 75 years old. He was too ashamed to ask us for help.

As a former casino employee, I would like to give the following advice: 1. Don't play slot machines, they are addictive. 2. If you do, use only as much as you can withstand losing. Set aside before you start, never go over it. 3. If you are lucky to win a bigger win, be happy but do not think it will happen again.

Anybody, including a gambler can comprehend this comment and fully understand it. But a gambler brain can easily be hijacked, and all of your points of reason go out the window. Advice is good. But the only advice that works for a gambler is, YOU must abstain and NEVER gamble to succeed.

OR many are bad people, amd this is their karma coming back on them. I know a few addicted gamblers; they are rotten people and I enjoy watching them lose!

The biggest problem is slot machines... They're programmed to be as addicting as possible. They're so fast-paced and entertaining that it's easy to get completely immersed in them. 90% of people in gambling recovery are from slot machines.
There's gotta be some sort of regulation on them because they're outright sinister.

One thing that made me quit is that I finally realized after many years of playing the simple fact that I can t win it back. It s only about if I want to lose more. I was exactly like you until that point. Chasing, hoping, praying. That realization changed my life. If gamblers can just get that chasing is THE actual trap. This is the world of self-destruction. This is the exact reason why people lose their salaries, house, friends, families. Only because they truly believe they can beat the system or be lucky enough to win a huge jackpot. But, they can t. Of course they can t. And this is why the house always win. Simply because people is chasing an illusion. Just look at the odds again. You can easily spend your entire life chasing and never win any life changing jackpot.

Gambling, like most vice sales, gets 80% of its revenue from 20% of its clients: the problem gamblers. The casinos know it and the government knows it. ONCE you have that much tax money coming in, you can't ever put the cork in the bottle. So the 20% will always be destroyed for the benefit of all others. Casinos don't care and neither does government.

I feel so lucky that I'm able to manage my enjoyment of poker. When I lose, that's it, go home, no worries. When I win, cool, got a little extra money in my pocket. It's never about winning or losing money. It's about having fun for a few hours like it is to have a nice food and coffee with friends., and it costs a small fee. I don't expect to win money after a nice meal, nor poker, so the fact I can is nothing more than coincidence or a random benefit.
The ability, I think, to separate a way to have fun and a way to make money is what matters. The game of poker can genuinely be "beat" because you'd playing against other players, not the house, but to play blackjack, baccarat, pai gow, roulette, etc, is madness. You know for a fact you won't win, yet you keep playing. It's literally insane.
If you want to have fun, go bowling. Watch a movie. If you want to make money, get a job and earn it like the rest of us. You will never figure some clever way to make money from the casinos. There's a reason why they're rich and you aren't.

My mom used to go to these tribal casinos in Wisconsin every now and then, justifying to herself that she was helping the tribe somehow. The habit took hold after she retired. I never asked her how much she won because it was none of my business, but she never seemed happy when she came home. If anything, she seemed depressed and sullen, as though something did not happen that she had expected to happen. I am convinced that gambling leads to depression, and depression leads to gambling. I saw my mom's attitude toward money change after she got involved with gambling and casinos. She got more obsessed with money to the point of not taking care of herself and her health as time went on. She passed away over 20 years ago.

I had of course, heard about gambling being addiction because when I went to a casino for my 1st time, I went with $80 that was my “Limit” I had a great time as I continually would win just little amounts to keep playing, so my best-friend and I found it a fun time but we could also see how addictive it could be if you don’t/can’t stop playing when it’s becoming “not fun” or feeling like you “NEED” to win to cover debts incurred.
But I saw a documentary on gambling addiction and saw people who were begging, borrowing and stealing to keep gambling! 😮 One example I saw, was a young man (around 24) actually went to his parents home when they were away, and STOLE HER REFRIGERATOR!!! 😮😮😮😮 I wish I was joking, but I’m not!
I have seen sad ones where people have stolen/sold/hocked their own jewelry or even their parents wedding rings, etc 😭🥺😭 It blows me away. 🥺🥺

I feel bad there are so many losing players. Sometimes when playing poker against them I do feel remorse for taking others money when they shouldn’t be playing/gambling. But I can’t control others decisions.
A lot of ppl get stuck on what they have done in the past. Focus on the present and the future and understand you can stop whenever and turn things around. Learn from the past but don’t let it ruin you now.

The part I hate about a slot jackpot is the tax the government expects on any win over 1200$. That's not a life changing win. Raise the amount of a taxable win to reflect inflation. This amount hasn't changed in tens of years.

    • @themadlibrarian2933
      @themadlibrarian2933 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The change in the tax law in 2018 made it a lot harder to deduct gambling losses if you itemize due to the combination of the standard deduction and personal exemption to make a larger standard deduction. You might have heard that the IRS wanted to LOWER the limit for a W-2G to $600 in 2017, but it was retracted after the comment period due to all the negative comments that the proposal got from both casinos and players.
Had the W-2G limit been indexed to inflation, it would be about $5400 now. The $1200 threshold for issuing a W-2G was set in 1977. In 2017, Dina Titus, whose congressional district includes the Las Vegas strip, requested the IRS to increase the W-2G threshold to $4800 and index it to inflation, but nothing happened. The idea of penny slots that require a bet of $8.80 seems ridiculous to me.

    • @TinaDenise10251954
      @TinaDenise10251954 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Also it's taxed! If no itemized deductions, can't write off losses. I remember the days, one line on your taxes your claim your winnings, the next line the losses were claimed, NO MORE!

Almost all of my family, including aunts and uncles are gambling addicts --- mom, both brothers, sister and her husbands, poss my dad, my mom's mom, and almost all of my mom's siblings.
If you think you have beat this problem, you prob haven't. The most my mom ever made gambling was through Ca Lottery - but she did not hit a million dollar jackpot. She won approx 9K, but most certainly spent upwards of 75K in her lifetime. House rules every time.
Gambling sucks generally, and I will only do it on vacation with budgeted funds, being satisfied with the little bit of entertainment I get. I can walk away from it with no problem and often win small amounts of money. But that's me.
I learned from Mom what gambling does to people. It's a very sad way to live.

Just like when I kicked the smoking habit, it was hard but it hangs around like a waiting butler waiting to send me back down the " Hole of Despair and ruin." I live life one day and hour at a time. I am lucky to have the love of someone who keeps me from falling down again. All is never lost as long as you can be more determined than your addiction. Never use hope to beat your addiction, it was one of the ills that Pandora let out. It is like a carrot that can never be reached. I am 65. The casino is a safe place for me to go when I'm lonely. People to talk to and laugh with and there's food and drinks and sport events to watch. The machines are programmed to attract us...personable and fun to play. Security everywhere and I feel safe. And no kids anywhere (yay!).
This is why your inheritances are evaporating. We live alone, and many of us are 'hanging around' waiting for someone to call or invite us over for dinner or something. We know our accumulated 'wealth' is all we control now, and if we live long enough that money goes to our end of life care. Again, no inheritance.
Your relative may already be in a care facility, and guess what? Many have 'field trip' days where patients are taken to casinos for the day without their relatives' approval. Casinos pay workers to do this, usually with free play to the person bringing the patients.

Eyeswideopen Truth: You didn`t win. You were given an illusion of winning. The drug is everywhere, so you can`t hide from it, just like you can`t hide from yourself. You are always there !!! Every time you start to think about gambling, think about what you have lost since day one of the addiction. Get mad at the people who did this to you, go to the mirror and tell that person you are mad at what they have done to you, but you forgive yourself. Then spend that money on you, and don`t give it to the thieves. Realize that even though the words are different, they are still drug pushers. Do you want to buy their drugs ? Don`t give them YOUR money for their drugs. Go eat a good meal, buy some nice clothes, go see a movie, buy your friends or family some gifts. They need not be expensive, it will be the thought that counts. You will feel better knowing that you did what YOU wanted to do with that money and not give it to the drug dealers. The thrill IS A DRUG. It alters your state of mind, think about it. Set a goal not to gamble for one day. Do that when you wake up, tell yourself " Just one more day, that`s all, just one." Get mad if you have to, just get mad at the addiction. Curse it if it helps. Treat it like your worst enemy ( because it is, it wants to take everything from you.) But most importantly, make peace with yourself, meditate if you have to. Tell yourself " Whatever it takes to get through ONE day."

The only way to approach gambling is that it is a game. You should look at how much money you can afford to lose. You should only ever consider gambling if you wouldn't mind taking the money you can afford to lose and throwing it away. So, let's say you have a budget of $100 (That's not much and many people can afford to lose that), then consider how much time you want to spend in gambling. If you want to spend 1 hour, then bet small. If you want to spend just ten minutes gambling, then you can place larger bets, but always stop when that time is up. Also, if you have a target to double your money, then stop when you've reached that target. You have won. Walk away and be happy. Or, if you have lost your $100 before the time you have allowed, then just stop and consider it some time spent playing a game. Only return to gambling when you have that disposable allowance.

AERI: A true addict will snowball back into what they know and will not care about anything but the game. When you are in the devils den, you lose track of time and self. Its like an alcoholic limiting themselves one drink. The addiction will eventually become two, then is back to square one. Disassociation is the only way to stay clean. Find another occupation for your time. Do anything but return to your demon.

They're not 'rigged' as such. The games are fair, but have a mathematical advantage in the casinos favour. No Casino denies this, so you can't call it 'rigged'. It is a business like any other, and they have to have an edge and actually make money or how would they pay for the premises, staff, and everything else. The only games that you can really win at are games like poker where you're playing against other players trying to win their money rather than the casinos, in this situation the casino is just an intermediate and you pay the dealer through rake per hour. All other games including slots are obviously in the casinos favour so they only pay out a certain percentage of what they take in, ensuring the casino makes a profit.

The only way to win is not to play, and that means not setting foot in those establishments for any reason.

I like that stupid PSA before the video. "Bet careful , bet safe". And with a snake about to strike. It's all BS anyway. The states make too much money from casino's and not dare get rid of them. Casinos don't care but the sure try to act like they do.

    • @lisalangille2071

I don’t know you or your husband, but my heart breaks for you. You are BOTH being destroyed by gambling. You may not be gambling, but he is. So, you lose time with your husband because he’s gambling (even if he’s in the same room with you) his attention and energy is on whatever device he gambles on (phone, iPad, laptop, etc) If your husband goes to a casino to gamble, then he’s in an environment FULL of others like him, enjoying gambling with out any one breathing down his neck. We all know the “tricks of the trade” they do to get you, reel you in and hook you. I have of course known of gambling addiction, but I will admit I had NO idea people would cheat, steal, lie and destroy everything & everyone for “one more chance” 😮 sadly, I knew the suicide rate was high from it on news, etc..
The ridiculous “perks” they “give/reward” you, aren’t a worth a red penny. The casino makes a a bazillion dollars a day or night (yes, slight exaggeration, but you get my point) and what they’ve “rewarded you” with, just keeps you happy, makes you feel special & wanting to go back.
My husband and I go once a year, stay for a week, enjoying the dining, shopping, playing the machines and a concert if the performer is someone we want to see. ** i know It’s an incredibly fine line to walk between (example:) gambling, or drinking, etc..to finding yourself at rock bottom.
      But it doesn’t happen overnight.
-What I would like to know from folks with addiction to gambling, is how did it start?
-When did you FIRST notice that you were becoming a problem gambler?
-How were you able to continue to fund your addiction without anyone knowing all of the above questions? 👆
🇨🇦🙂 Thank you truly, if you’re still reading this 🙂🇨🇦

It's not just the casino, it's the lottery tickets too. I've been chasing that dream for the past 45 years now, and still haven't even won a hundred bucks. It makes me wonder if those lottery corps here in Canada are rigged. The ticket 649 for example, has a guaranteed prize of 1 million dollars for a separate set of numbers. If they have this control, then the lottery corp has control over all of the lotteries. It seems greed got them, since it's so hard to win anything decent at a casino, or on a lottery. I gave up on the casino over 10 years ago.
