Yes go past any bookies in Birmingham especially in the deprived areas you will see them outside, and I don't understand affluent areas ban them or have minimum outlets, on there high streets Deprived areas seem to have more of them, and how does the council allow this ? Also it's general knowledge, bookies like to pay cash, they prefer not to give a bank transfer or cheque, why ? I didn't know
As a gambling addict for many years it worries me that this man lost his marriage and did jail time and still has relapsed. If theres ever proof that its an illness its here.
You can see it in his eyes. Us gambling addicts have a look to us, that nothing that could happen in front of our eyes could change the end goal of the current Moment, which always supersedes everything including a loss of everything including every $$$ right in front of you. Once the next hand is about to be dealt. You may notice or you may not…
Yes I am. I’m struggling and can’t even tell my family about this. I’ve lost all my savings, tried to get it but I kept losing more more. Very depressing really
Find one family member or friend that you trust and tell them. I don't know how it feels to have a gambling problem but I definitely know how to pull yourself out of the gutter and rebuild your life again. You can do it, don't give up hope. Take it one step at a time.
Been there mate but now is the vital time to put steps in place to force a change. If not you’ll get into debt trying to get the cash back etc and before you know it you may be in a way worse situation.
Gambling councilling . I've started this along with mental health support . Half way through but slowly putting steps / blocks to avoid gambling. £7000 debt deep . Committed multiple money fraud. Phone contracts . Stealing . I'm 23 started at 17 on a computer game . Wish I did something straight away . You won't stop chasing it . I've had 8k win still lost it all . When your a gambler money means nothing to you. Estimated loss £130-160k Predicted to be £250-350k by the age of 30 if I continue.
A mate of mine worked at a casino for years he told me that many of the punters were well known problem gamblers with many leaving after losing 1000s repeatedly and in crazed state and in tears..management did nothing apparently
Lucky people must have great jobs to be able to have 1000s in the first place. I hear these stories and I don't get how everyone just seems to have 1000s to spend on this and that willy nilly
I’ve enjoyed a few casino nights, spending £20 or £30 and that’s it. I’m always flabbergasted to see people putting £50’s on the table like they’re pennies.
Where this woman and the betting authorities, addiction charities etc get their data from is anyone's guess. They all quote these mystical figures of 1-3^% of gamblers are at risk when they can't possibly know. Just from standing in a bookies and watching obviously poor people ramming their entire wallet contents in a fobt or making numerous trips to cash machines tells me it is at least 30% who can't control their gambling. This does not include online gambling where deposits in my experience are not questioned.
Makes me laugh when I try invest my money in to shares or crypto the bank makes it difficult claiming it's to "protect" me but wouldn't bat an eyelid if you try deposit it all to betfred, Ladbrokes etc. NONE of the institutions have your best interests in mind.
@@bobbyrayofthefamilysmith24 Yes that's a fair point, just to mention with some major banks there is an option to block debit card payments to bookies. The older I get I think almost no one has our best interests at heart except dogs.
I don’t agree with that lady, no offence. She said ‘you can’t just catch it from a casino’ - sounds like a straw man to me. Nobody is suggesting that. You might get hooked, you might not: but is it worth finding out? Gambling won’t make you money, hard work will. Peace.
I used to work with three workmates, every lunchtime they spent looking through the daily paper at the horses running that day, they used to spend hundreds of pounds every week betting ! one of them put a whole weeks salary on one horse, on a cert, that lost . they used to laugh at me for not joining in! haha.

They should not blame the company/casinos for his addiction. Just like nobody blames alcohol or cigarettes companies. I fully understand how difficult it is to keep gambling under control. It's not the free play or other perks that make a gambler gamble. I know it first hand. I play slot machines quite often. Even $0.50 or $1.00 bets can lead into big losses in a short period of time. I like getting the perks but they don't make me come back to a casino. I have a decent amount of savings and a lot of free time. If I'm winning I try to leave with at least some of the winnings but it's not easy. I stopped taking my bank cards with me. I also started to move some of my investments into locked in ones. Just in case I have an urge to play more which means lose mor in a longer period of time. Self exclusion is probably the best way of getting out of gambling but I'm not ready for it. I
I have no doubt that problem gambling follows the Pareto or 80/20 principle. 20% of gamblers lose 80% of the money. This is a very serious problem. Pains me to see all the seniors in casinos throwing their money away on slots. Depressing...😢
I have destroyed my life with this monster addiction 😢😢 69 days clean ❤ never again!!! All this shops do is robbing and destroying the whole communities!!! They are worst that any drug dealer!! I don't know why it is not banned yet 😢😢

It’s easy to work out people’s loyalties in debates like this. If they keep going on about tiny minorities, they probably work for the bookies. If they talk about risk factors and complex causes, they probably work independently, as Dr Nutt obviously does.
thats not strictly true. They do want some winners. Because if they didn't get any winners, nobody would go to them. They just want the losers to be hundreds of times as many as the winners.
At the end of the day it boils down to the individual gambling. It’s YOU who deposited the money and gambled, of course the bookmakers aren’t going to stop you and will actively encourage you because that’s their business. YOU should seek help if you feel you have a problem
What about a restaurant that sells basically garbage food that gives discounts. Are they just lowering in the people that are already obese and are going to die? Companies are allowed to entice you have to be a responsible consumer
Hard to compare obesity to gambling addiction. Eating a big meal on a few occasions in a restaurant pales in comparison to losing hundreds/thousands at a bookies or casino.

Why would a bookmaker want to highlight its problem gamblers? - you’re asking them to slash their own profit and turnover which they won’t do.

My opinion! Gambling as a whole should be banned in UK!!
there are only two types of gamblers. Those who lose, and those who lose slowly.
