  • If you're a car enthusiast, you know that tires are a crucial component of your vehicle. And if you're familiar with Michelin, you'll know that they're one of the most respected tire manufacturers in the world. So, when Michelin announced the release of their newest tire, the Michelin Pilot Sport S 5, it's a very exciting moment.
    The Michelin Pilot Sport S 5, or PSS5 for short, is perhaps the most highly anticipated tire in the history of tires. It's the successor to the much-loved Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S (PS4S), which was the successor to the Pilot SuperSport (PSS), which replaced the Pilot Sport 2 (PS2). So, in an almost poetic way, Michelin has come full circle on the naming convention, keeping us on our toes with each release.
    So, what sets the PSS5 apart from its predecessors? This video aims to answer that question by looking at all the information available on the new tire. We'll explore how it improves on the Pilot Sport 4 S, which was already a top-performing tire, and what makes the PSS5 stand out in a crowded market.
    We'll also cover where you can buy the new Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 and what the future holds for the Michelin Pilot Sport range. Whether you're a track enthusiast or just looking to upgrade your daily driver, the PSS5 promises to deliver improved performance and handling.
    Overall, this video is a must-watch for anyone interested in the latest tire technology and innovations. With exclusive information and insights, we'll take a deep dive into the Michelin Pilot Sport S 5 and what makes it one of the most exciting releases of the year.

      I had the PS4 on my medium sized hot hatch for 28,000km and came to hate them. In the last 10,000km they were extremely noisy from 30 to 40kph in spite of regular rotation. I changed to Primacy 4+ and the comfort is massively improved. Noise is also excellent. Transitional steering response is not as good, but traction and general grip is excellent. Unless planning to do track stuff I would not go to a PS4 or PS5.

    Thanks a lot Jon for that heads up on this tire, as I've been really curious as to when and how Michelin would upgrade the PS4S. It looks as if Michelin is stiffening up the steering response of the PS4S, the thing that was its greatest drawback to me, and so I'm really curious how the steering response and precision will be. I am a little concerned with the use of the steel belts in the S5, as the 4S doesn't have them, I think, and uses Aramid fiber which I believe is stiffer and lighter. I hope the new tire doesn't gain weight as a result of the use of steel belting. One of my top priorities in my Z is to reduce unsprung weight as much as possible and to this end I'm going to be installing a set of 20" forged magnesium wheels on the car in a +1 setup. I wouldn't want to partially negate some of that weight savings with heavier tires. If the S5 tires do gain weight then I guess I would just go with the Cup 2 tires.
    BTW: I will not buy any tire until after I've seen a review of it done by you.

    • @pjay3028
      @pjay3028 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      If you are that keen to reduce unsprung weight you really should be using 19 inch wheels rather than 20s.
      The difference in weight jumping up to 20 inch is really significant because they have to be really beefed up to maintain required the strength. I can't remember who it was that went into great detail about this but I reckon it was either Gordon Murray or Andreas Preuninger so they know what they're talking about!

    • @videomaniac108
      @videomaniac108 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pjay3028 Actually, there was very little more weight in comparing the 20" to the 19", for the same width, from the manufacturer - LiteSpeed Racing. What would be more significant is the increase in the moment of inertia about the wheel's rolling axis. The good thing in going with the +1 scheme is that the rolling radius is the same and the tire's section height is reduced, a larger hole size. This means slightly less tire weight, which partially offsets the weight gain from the wheel.
      The other part of the program is to also reduce the weight of the brake system, like with a two-piece aluminum hat rotor.

    • @tyrereviews
      @tyrereviews  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I've not deep dived into the construction but I would be surprised if they end up heavier, current trend is going light and lighter to help with rolling resistance targets, which has the often unfortunate effect of softening up the steering response too. As p jay says the biggest jump in unsprung weight will come from smaller wheels!

    That second S can be a bit confusing 😆, as you said the PS-S5 is only OEM at the moment, I had to double check and it turns out the tires I just put on my E36 M3 are regular PS-5 without the extra S. 🤷‍♂. No driving impressions yet, as I still haven't finished the engine rebuild, but I expect they will be quite good based on my previous experience with Michelins. (And yes, I put new tires on even before the engine was back in. It had sat for so long the old ones were dry rotted, and there was a sale on Michelins through the local tire importer a few weeks back).
    I'll agree that the SuperSports were a "hero" tire! I put some on my Subaru STi a few years back, and they had similar grip to the "aggressive" summer tires I'd used before, e.g. Goodyear Asymmetric (forget what number), Hankook RS-3, Falkens (not the top Azenis, but one step down since at the time I lived where there were cold and rainy winters), and the like, which I expected, but what I chose to spend the extra money for was their reputation for also having good ride quality and being quieter than other summer high performance tires. And that is what blew me away, how _QUIET_ they were, relatively speaking. A 2005 STi has very little sound deadening, so the difference in tire noise was immediately noticeable. It made the daily commute a lot more tolerable while still giving plenty of grip for track days,

The Potenza Sport is certainly really fast and grippy though, if you don't mind the feeling of not really feeling connected to the road compared to traditional Potenzas, it's a bit like "easy mode" (the Sport will just smooth over bumps and grip on power down, where the older Potenzas would flicker the traction control light as the engine rpm flares in response to a bumpy road which is IMO more fun despite being objectively worse). The impression i'm getting with this is that this is basically the 4S star marked replacement. That way OE's can't complain towards Michelin anymore about needing to justify towards their customers because of having an old PS4(S star marked) Michelin tyre being mounted while a new PS5(non S though) is already out.
    I'm always quite excited about new top tier tyres, especially from michelin, but this one leaves me completely cold. Save to say that this is an completely irrelevant tyre for most people and it certainly isn't the 4S replacement people are still excitingly waiting for. I can definitely understand Michelin though. I mean it's not like the newer top tier tyres from the usual suspects are driving circles around the 4S already so there really isn't a need to replace the 4S in a hurry or something.
    When it comes to the sidewall design of these new tyres though? I think it's starting to become a bit too much, certainly when i look at that CUP2 R in the background. I really wouldn't want my tyre to look that way as it starts to get to the edge of where it starts to look cheap again. I think the the PS4, PS4S & original CUP2 had the sidewall design just right. Just my two cents...

    Surprisingly uncritical (promo?) video imo.
    I recon the unofficial statement by Michelin on postponing their tyre line for replacement market rather reads like this:
    "Our technical team is back at the drawing board and desparately working on upgrading our newly developed S5 since we figured out that it cannot hold a candle to available products as the SportContact 7 which is currently dominating the UHP tyre market."
    Couldn't be said obviously...

      I'm as sad as everyone that you can't buy it, but now it's on the michelin website and online stores I wanted to explain what was going on to avoid confusion.

    I just shined my Goodyear F1 Assymetric 6 tires. They are my sixth set and fifth brand on this car and the best so far. The Db rating is awesome, the performance just fine. This is one I have not tried. Perhaps the next set. My size used to be expensive. Now its just a common size and less than half of what it cost 12 years ago. I drive easy and the noise is important to me. I have had some tires that sing too much.

    I drove it on the new AMG GT63 (press vehicle)
    Amazing car. Please revie & test this combination for your Audience. Only 5 vehicles (Lexus LX, Porsche Panamera, Aston Martin, etc) released as OE tyre (ex factory only!) so far. Very rare

    I will absolutely test these bad boys when they come out and make a video about it on my pain in the ass supra. I currently run cheap chinese tyres cause of my driving style but I want to go from hoon to grip and set times at my local track. Love the channel great news.

      I swear it's even more impressive in the wet. It's damn near the same as the dry.

    After using the impressive 4s on a few cars, and now done 4kmiles on the Conti sc7 including two wet trackdays.
    I'd say the Conti has the edge on the road and track for performance, wet/dry grip, noise similar and wearing well.
    and at the time of purchase cheaper than the 4s.

      I really would like to see more (qualified) comparisons of Conti SC7 and PS4s - seems that Conti did a good job…after years

    On my second set of 4s' and gotta say i love them. My only, very small, gripe is steering feel.
    To preface, im running them as F 245/40/19 R 275/35/19. Rims with them have been F 8.5"(width) w/ R 9"(width) and F 9"(width) w/ R 10"(width) and i have got to day the smaller wifth wheels felt better. Even though the smaller rims are on the small size given the tire width, i had more feeling and control with them (given the same psi).
    I feel like these tire benefit from a bit of oversizing because of the lack of feel on proper size rims.

    • @tyrereviews
      @tyrereviews  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agreed. I tend to pressure up or put them on wheels with a slight stretch

    • @winebartender6653
      @winebartender6653 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tyrereviews For sure. I have them on a rwd G37 and it definitely takes some fiddling with the psi front to rear to get a good balance.
      I primarily like my car to feel sharp with slight oversteer on turn in and as rear grippy as possible on corner exit. The difference between 32psi and 33psi (cold)on the rear is massive for spongy/swishy feeling on these tires. I ended up with 34psi (cold front) and 33.5psi(cold rear). I drive/steer with the throttle quite a bit, so the tears heat up quite quickly. But once everything is warm, cornering feels like an absolute dream.
      I think the 4s it probably the most fantastic rwd tire I have driven (for road/light track duty). There is so much throttle control that makes balancing the car effortless.
      Back to the gripe of steering feel: once you get some experience with the tires, it becomes a trust of the grip you'll have and how they will react to steering inputs. They can feel numb, especially on small corrections, but the cars always go where I expect and want it and that's all I can ask for.
      To also add: I feel the roll off as temps get wayyyy to hot (like your recent french track video) is tempered well so the decreasing limits are obvious. It's not a cliff, but a gradual drop in grip levels that allow you to change your driving line and cornering dynamics easily.
      It's not a hardcore track time by any means, but to be able to drive to the track and just get in with it is great. I can't wait for the next iteration.

    I've had the Michelin Pilot Sport 5, on my car since mid October 2022 and I must say they have been worked hard in the 10,000 they've now covered since. I cannot fault them, come rain or sunshine, they grip a lot better than I expected, when I've pushed my luck a little. Will never fit another make since having these fitted.

    What's your opinion about mixmatching different tyre models for cars with staggered tyre sizes?
    I couldn't get Pilot Sport 4S for my fronts when I last replaced them ... now I can, but I can't get them for my rears - best I can do is Pilot Sport 4 (so I can match my fronts at least).
