Michelin Power 6 | The Best Road Based Motorcycle Tyre??

  • I was invited by Michelin to Spain to put their latest generation of road tyres through their paces on road and track. Tyre testing is subjective especially when you are testing the same brand of tyre but here's my findings from the Michelin Power 6 and Power GP 2 on the road.

On the road that Hornet was definitely showing you don't need a 1000cc super naked!!! In most cases these days, the bike has more talent than the rider!

It’s interesting when it comes to the choice of tyres. One example (keeping in mind that I once for several years was testing each at Phillip Island during racing seasons), is an ex teammate, racing the exact same bikes. With lap times separating us by tenths of a second, ran different brands and were slower if we swapped tyres. It’s something you can only grasp when testing back to back, on the same bike and track to really determine what suits you best. This being said, for 99% of all riders, just go with what is recommended from your trusted service centre as these days, apart from the OEM rubber, are better than the rider on them.

Ive got power 6's on my '15 GSXR600, absolutely fantastic tyres. Tonnes of grip, feel and traction. Ridden on them for 4000+km and had 0 issues. Wear is also incredible, still have plenty of tread left. Will probably get around 10000+km by the looks of them.

@@juicy9592 compared to the S22's I originally had:
The grip is far more predictable and they warm up a lot quicker. Not as "pointy" at the front but feel more confident as they have a very linear feeling, no sudden dip or flighty feeling. Just smooth, consistent feeling throughout the corner.

Great test Chopsy, incidentally having recently tested the BMW S1000R and M1000R I must admit that IMO the S1000R is a far better every day road bike, I found the M too rigid and basically a super bike with flat bars and no fairing and for me at least the S had all the power needed.

Great idea about comparing the competition at a tyre launch! I have Road 5’s on my Speed Triple and I absolutely love them in all conditions. My bestie now has Road 6’s on her 2011 Street Triple and I’ve no problems with them in the wet and remember the bike doesn’t have any rider modes to reign in the power. We regard to your comment @17:13 about the new asymmetrical tread patterns Chopsie..... I prefer the old pattern of the outgoing Power GP. It was very distinctive, whereas the new PowerGP2 pattern is nigh-on identical to the sports tyres offered by many of the other brands. Nearly all (same genre) tyres are beginning to look the same these days, with only very minor differences between the tread patterns of the various brands. In short, tyre brands are losing their individual identity.

A misconception that most have is all profiled tyres are the same shape. Take a 180/55/17. You could stand up 5 different brands, either same focus, and each will have a different total height. So the profile can be misleading.

Modern as in the past 20+ years, I have a 20y/o designed tyre on my ZX9r, the old Pirelli Diablo's, first time I used them was in the rain and had no problems even giving it a handful occasionally. I had Michelin Pilot Power 2CT's on before hand and they are awesome tyres too, and at a great price, only reason I have the Pirelli's is because I was a bit short on cash last year when I got them, only thing I don't like much is the tread pattern on the Diablos.

You think they are all as good as each other? No, they all have different strengths and weaknesses... some are also lighter than others which helps reduce unsprung weight and improves suspension responsiveness. ie; The Power 6 are aprox 1.2 kg per set lighter than the S22's for my MT09. 😮

Nice vid Chops. Tyre launches look quite fun! So, I know you're a fan of the Bridgestone S23, as am I, but I'm interested to see how they compare in your opinion. Would you rate the S23 or Power 6 as the better tyre?

I've got power 5 on one bike and s22s on the other. Both are great. Different bikes but fwiw the main difference I notice is the power 5 are good to go straight away, better in cold or wet weather, very versatile for street riding in all conditions never feel like they don't have enough grip on the street great all rounder. The bridgestone do take a little while to heat up, but after they're fully up to temp I actually prefer the feel of them, they have this nice soft way to them, they're not sketchy in the cold/wet but they do need some heat to really get in their happy place, so IMO the better choice for summer fun in nice weather where you can get some heat in them.

    • @ragerider6283

@@ZANGI3F Very helpful, cheers. The Bridgestone S & Michelin Pilot series have both got great reviews over the years & the latest S23's & Pilot 6 are the best versions yet so I guess you can't go wrong with either. Might just come down to price maybe. Also regardless, both will be a vast improvement on the very average OE Dunlop Sportmax 2's I'm currently using & looking to change asap.
