  • / tyre_reviews . The Michelin Pilot Sport 5 is new to market, but so is its main rival, the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6!
    To find out which of these new ultra high performance tires are best, I use a VW Golf GTI wearing 225/45 R17 tires and test the dry, wet, comfort, noise and rolling resistance of nine sets of performance tires, to see if the new PS5 or Asym 6 can retain their crowns, or whether another brand of tire is best.
    In the tire test we have nine of the top uhp tires on the market.
    Bridgestone Turanza T005
    Continental PremiumContact 6
    Giti GitiSport S2
    Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6
    Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 3
    Michelin Pilot Sport 5
    Rotalla S Race SU01
    Semperit Speed Life 3
    Yokohama Advan Sport V105

I have an FWD daily with around 260-270hp.... :/ :D and with the pirelli p zero its absolutely junk.... :S if i want a traction it needs some hardcore burnout ...but its deadly for the wearing, and i dont want to foolin with burnouts just because for traction :S

      Nexen nfera Supreme(N5000 Platinum) ($175),

    I went from Dunlop Sport Maxx rt2 225/45/17 to the new Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 6 two weeks ago and this tire is fenomenal in the wet and even better in the dry, so well balanced, loads of grip in the corners and great feedback from the road!
    EDIT: 7 months later after summer season ended, my conclusion is that this tire is amazing, all around very good performer, very linear and predictable slippage in the corners and performance in the wet is ridiculous!
    10/10 would reccommend to anyone!

Disappointed they haven't sharpened the PS5 as that was my main complaint going from the PS3 to the PS4, but I felt it was probably the better tyre all round. I'd have to agree the PS4 is quite a numb feeling tyre - but it makes up for it in other areas, particularly in the wet - and I live in a very wet climate - so for me it's an excellent road tyre - and now the PS5 has been released, the PS4 is great value here as they run out stock. Yokohama burnt me a number of years ago when I bought a set after they had transferred production from Japan to Malaysia, and the quality tanked to the levels of budget tyre brands - at least for the set I bought. I guess they have sorted that out now, or perhaps Europe get tyres from another manufacturing location.

    I got no problems with dual winners... different tires for different needs. The strength of your reviews has never been just the rankings, but the process and evaluation of each entry. Helps the buyer understand the tires and what they're buying into.
    Boy, did the Goodyear come ever so close to owning the title solely, had it not been the poor hydroplaning performance. I was this close to putting it on the shipping list for the next set on my E46 coupé, only that I live in Vancouver, Canada, where the spring/fall sessions are WET, WET, WET. Otherwise, its sporty driving focus fits the car's character to a tee.
    Michelin has always been about balance in all traits, while not necessarily acing each. Call it a broad-focus approach that gives the users the biggest envelope in various conditions (still loving my AS3s).
    Kudos to another splendid test video. These take tons of work. 💯

    I've had the Turanza T005's and I never disliked a tyre that much. They felt like driving on pillows. They are indeed very soft and made driving in a straight line a wobbly experience. You could see the car moving over the tyres when just pushing a bit against the side of the car standing next to it. Maybe they were a total mismatch for my car and/or my taste of driving but I changed them after one year driving for GoodYears Asymm 5's and it just felt like driving a new car. The Asymm 6 tyres will certainly get my attention when my current asymm 5's are worn. Great video again, thanks!

    Another great review Jonathan. Especially interesting for me as about to change the 225/40R18 Turanza T005s on my M135i (F40) for something more sporty. I had been debating between PS4 OEs and PS5s, but finally went for PZ4OEs after watching a previous UHP summer tyre review of yours before this review came out, on the assumption the PS5s would be an evolution of the PS4s and not be as sporty as the PZ4s, which will be fitted tomorrow, so can't wait to see how they perform.
    PS Can't believe the mpg I could get from the T005s if I took it easy. Sure I will lose that with the PZ4s.

    Yet another awesome tyre review video Jonathan! Thanks!
    I presume these tyres were all tested when they were new and with full 100% thread depths?
    If so, it would be great if you could somehow re-test all of these some time down the road when they have worn down quite a bit. Maybe at thread depths of 80% and 50-60% etc?
    That's probably quite a bit of work, but it would be really interesting to see how they compare at different stages of the life of the tyre and whether they still can maintain their characteristics over time.
    I am really interested in how consistent these tyres will be :) Thanks again!

    I have recently fitted Michelin Pilot Sport 5's to my Golf7 R and find your conclusions pretty bang on to be fair. They are SO predictable in the wet and in the dry and very supple in terms of ride quality but they are not for the precision driver or track days in that they are a little numb and lacking in feel for competitive drivers, but as a road tire they are superb and suit me to a tee, as I like to make swift but relaxed and ultimately very safe progress on the country roads where I live which are too often wet and greasy. I would fit them again without question as they take so much stress out of my daily commute. Oh, and they hold tire dressing better than my old PS4's by a big big margin due to their sidewall design.

Considering a set of these costs more than some cars I feel like it's a real shame we can't test drive tyres like we do cars. I've had PC6 on my Mondeo Titanium X Sport 2.5T for a few years. Just swapped out to PS5s all round and agree the PC6 is fairly grippy, but lacks comfort on UK roads. Early days yet but the PS5 seem to be better for comfort already and also very grippy so far (not done anything too crazy yet). I do note a little lack of responsiveness but not precision vs. the PC6. In the UK where I'm actually more likely to use the car in wet weather (when walking, cycling or similar won't be as fun), I think I'll grow to appreciate the Michelins. Also I'm crossing my fingers for better wear and though it's hard to tell the road noise being a smidge lower should make for more pleasant motorway stints. Based on this the AS6 would have been an interesting option but with the current Michelin Spring 2022 offer I'll get £50 cashback making my fully fitted price of the PS5 lower than the shipped price of the AS6 (and noone seems to have stock of those for fitting near me / available to me - I can only find one place to order them online and no fitting option).
      So will I be happy moving from the Conti to the Michelin? Time will tell. I hope so. I don't have a performance hot hatch, but a car that is bigger that just happens to be able to hit 150mph. I hope the understeer isn't an issue. Also the PS5s do look pretty damn good.

Ride is still good at those pressures and I am sure the fact that I have them so hard has saved the tyres and rims from damage from hitting the huge potholes that are developing in the areas around where I live. Just fitted the pilot sport 5s onto my TTS. Amazing tyre with so much grip also very cool looking. Highly recommended.

    I'm surprised that the Michelin 5 was still so soft.. though I feel like they are trying to push more performance focused customers to the 4S or Cup 2 now. But maybe sales of their performance tires went up when they got softer, as I feel a lot of people I think like to say they want sporty, but they mostly notice ride quality..

      If they wear at a rate similar to PS4, it's best avoided. That's what nobody tells you, they wear quickly and as soon as there is any wear it instantly loses all of its performance. I wonder if that has changed at all with the PS5..

    • @dufonrafal
      @dufonrafal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's not surprising honestly, Michelin has been doing it since the Pilot Sport / Pilot Exalto. Now they're called the Pilot Sport S / Pilot Sport, but one is more about sports cars and the other about luxury sedans.
      The promotional video for the Pilot Sport 5 uses an Audi A5 Sportback and the main argument is low wear with high level of wet grip.

      well as far i know the "PS5S" will be out next year this isnt the "sporty" tire at all more like universal one i would say... so i will grab the PS4S this year-ofc sportcup2 is another lvl... thinking about the new contis sportcontact 7 they rlly performed pretty good in test but still i got an i30n and the forums about what to wear instead of the Pzeros are like 100% ppl that changed to PS4S = gr8 improvement for the car... and the michelin last longer than the competitors... still u prolly gonan change them like every or every2 year so prolly doesnt matter at all :D

    I would love to see an aging comparison of tyres. So subjecting them to as many heat cycles as they would be subjected to during their 40.000km life and shaving them down. Then doing the usual dry and especially wet tests and seeing how much they degraded. I suspect that some brands will degrade a lot more than others.
    I have the segment of continental premium contact and eco contact in mind for this test.

    • @Naughtystimpy
      @Naughtystimpy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeh - we definitely need a test that shows how tyres perform after a certain fixed mileage or wear amount. Manufacturers can design tyres just so they do well for 30 mins in these tests otherwise

      I would also love to, however cost is a huge factory. It would be 100's of thousands.

      @emmamitchell1582 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tyrereviews understandable. Maybe a manufacturer is willing to cooperate? Seems like you have some very solid connections. I expect they would have thermal test chambers for the cycles and a machine to shave down the tire?
      Thanks for your answer!

    • @tyrereviews

      @@emmamitchell1582 there are machines to shave the tyres, but from all the data i've seen you only really get correlation in wet braking compared to actual worn tyres, the rest is way off. If you can invent a machine to wear tyres realistically you'll be very rich

    Another great review! Not sure how the Michelin and Goodyear ended up being tied for 1st here though. The Goodyear basically beat the Michelin in almost every test - dry handling, wet handling, noise, and rolling resistance. Slightly less comfortable and prettier, but not sure how that makes it tied for 1st?

      Michelin better aquaplaning

    • @thebrowns5337
      @thebrowns5337 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Michelin won in wet handling essentially as the GY aquaplaned a lot more than the Michelin? This was talked about in the video. Go back and listen again maybe.
      Times aren't everything although they were pretty mucn identical in the test. Confidence in your tyre and staying on the road count too - most normal drivers don't have a track to practice on and would lose it in curved aquaplaning.
      Michelin stopped better in the wet too - normal wet braking test and straight aquaplaning where the GY was garbage.
      And all this despite the Michelin being more comfortable.

      aquaplaning - michelin was 1-st GY 8th, dry handling GY-2md, M-4th,dry braking Gy1-st M- 3rd, wet handling GY-1st, M-2ndh , wet breaking Gy-4th, M-3rd.So, michelin isn't best but PS5 don't have any weakness
