The Deftones song is from the White Pony album and the track is called Elite. Great song great riff!! And severed as Jamie Jasta saids “Goes Haaaaarrddddd!!!”

severed and Sp Lit are my two faves from this album. I bought the guitar tab book for resurrection years ago and it greatly improved my chops/skills on the fret board. My personal riffs almost have a chimaira vibe to them, and i am perfectly fine with that. much thanks for all guitar related info over the years, because you have helped a metal brother out a lot

This is one the heaviest songs I have heard in my 30 plus years listening to metal. First song I heard from Chimaira in 2003. Surpasses Strapping Young Lad's Love.
Pass Out Existence is soooooooooooo underrated. It was because of this record that I bought my first 7 string and Severed was the first song I played on it
Brings me back to being a sophomore in high school sitting in my writing class wondering what song lyrics I wanted to share With the assignment we were doing. Then another classmate hands me The pass out of existence album and says check this out! That day in class is when I found myself which I didnt even realize I was lost. haha great day in metal

Thanks for posting this Rob! POoE is probably my favorite Chimaira record, it just clicked with me the most. It's so heavy, the riffs rule and the songs are so damn good. I hope you guys write more 7 string songs too, I love those!
I never really listened to anything from Chimaira before Resurrection back in the day so it's cool to hear these tracks and you play them. Coincidentally I got my first 7 string earlier this year so this is a great opportunity to learn some Chimaira classics from the man himself, thanks Rob! Great stuff.
This is a great song for learning to keep your picking hand in sync with interesting rhythms changes.
This is a cool tutorial because sometimes you just want to play super heavy songs that aren't too technical.

I love when you touch on the Pass out of Existence......That noise you heard on the 7 string I think is string noise behind the nut......a fret wrap behind the nut should kill that completely.
That first EP and album are still so damn good and underrated..sure they didnt perform that great but damn are there ever some bangers on them
Kinda has an engine #9 sound to it. Although that deftones song is in standard, that song inspired so many of my riffs lol! Love these vids tho man!

Funny story about this song for me, it was about five or six years ago and it was the middle of summer so all of our windows were open, we didn’t have our AC in yet, even though we should have, and I was blasting Pass Out Of Existence in this song came on, and it got to the part towards the end of the song with the breakdown where Mark was yelling “severed” really aggressively and extremely loud, and it was blaring, and my grandmother who was living downstairs, called me angrily and said “ turn that way down, or off, or put some headphones in, it sounds like somebody’s being murdered up there.”

The Deftones inspired riff would be 'Elite' (track 3 from White Pony). Also heard a little 'Bored' (first song off first Deftones album) on the palm muted riff between 4 and 3 on the low A. Great explanations, thanks heaps Rob! \m/
An absolute banger! One of the first Chimaira tunes I ever heard and was instantly hooked. Fast, chunky, brutal, and groovy! Really showcases fun riffage, Mark's insane vocals, and Andol's impeccable drums! Last but not least, I love Spicuzza's contributions. Everything he does is so unique to really identify "Severed". If you get a chance to have him demonstrate what he uses and how he works his magic at some point that would be tremendous!

That Deftones riff is probably Elite. But it could be Street Carp too. These sortoff riffs is also why i love Chimaira. Especially pass out.

The riff that you mention was Deftones inspired may be inspired by Engine No. 9. They sound similar but I believe deftones were playing in drop C on white pony

Hello Rob. :) I was checking out H3-1000FR Black Burst, it felt really good as well, very light weight, and about similar quality as a Majesty... Didn't appeal to me in photos, shape, but when I tried it myself really loved it, with SS frets, but my mom liked the Gibson SG a lot more, when I tried in store hahaha :D. I loved both! I recorded a really shitty cover of Severed years ago when I did music. I programmed the drums on a drum machine called Hydrogen (only available on Linux), recorded bass, and even the vocals, all by myself. My vocals was the worst part because I just growled the lyrics and I'm not much of a vocalist. Mostly did it for fun and because the drums were easy to program for it.
It never was released though.
Can we get some more from pass out? Love this album so much, maybe some sphere or let go?

Trying to think, the only deftones riff I can think of that it could have come from is “Elite”, but I didnt realize White Pony came out in 2000. Such a cool riff, i think it would be harder to name a metal band that didn’t appropriate that riff in some form lol.
I never got the Deftones reference tbh, it felt like it's own thing in Severed. More like the 1-4 thing which is quite diabolical and used in metal a lot. But if we're talking Deftones White Pony then maybe Elite.

I always have loved the guitar tone on this album. Of course the whole mix and production is great also. Any insights into any of the gear / effects / post production on the guitars for this album?
This album is PACKED with various effects for sure! As you may have seen in my recent video with Jim LaMarca, EYL ep. 43, we potentially unlocked the 24 year old mystery regarding what amps were used on that record. I've always known the guitar tone was comprised of four different amps combined. Some Line 6, and Yamaha DG130, and then I think a Dual Rec, and now we've learned that the fourth amp was most likely a Bogner Uberschall.🎸

Enjoyed this so much! First time I listened to Pass Out in 2002, I had never heard the band, I bought it purely because I visited the RoadRunner Records website every day and they talked about Chimaira (as well as others like Spineshank, Ill Niño, etc etc) and I thought this would be a band I’d like. Fear Factory and Deftones were the first bands I thought of when I put it in my CD changer.
When you played this on 6 strings like on the Impossibility tour did you transpose it or play in a different tuning?
Right on! Yep this song, and a couple others on Pass Out, were easy to play in Drop C on six strings. Thus they weren't quite as heavy, but it got the job done!🤘

I'm not sure about the scale length... maybe 25.5"? And I always use 11-52 for all of my guitars, with an additional .60 on a 7 string. Cheers!
