Great to hear this. Chimaira was always so riff oriented while staying away from the genetic 5-7-8 metal core riffage. You guys really carried me through young adulthood. MFA and Rob f..ng Arnold for the win.

Such a good dude, those shows we got to play with u guys he was always so approachable, and I remember going to the HOB in Cleveland for shows and running into him there, and he always remembered you were, always a smile on his face. Def one killer dude

Not sure which of Matt's riffs is my favourite because there are many great ones. Awesome that you give him a stage for what he has done for the band. Man... you guys were so important to my musical taste and me as a guitar player. I knew Chimaira from Pass Out of Existence and then The Impossibility of Reason came out which till this days is one of my favourite albums ever. Welcome back and I hope you guys are going to tour in Europe. I am not counting on it but the fact you guys are playing is really awesome.
The riff over the blast beats in Empire is the greatest MFA riff of all time.

That look of pure ecstasy at 5:00 when he plays the open C, knowing he played a vital role in the 2000s metalcore era. That tone is flawless too. My big question for you and Matt would be (if you haven’t answered it yet) is how do you get the most out of a single pickup guitar? It feels like it would be limiting in sounds, but I know Alexi Laiho used them too \m/
Haha🤘😎 About the single pickup, most players, in all genre's, typically only use one pickup at a time. A second pickup is there usually for another tone option, that you can switch to as desired. But in metal especially, riffing really only requires one killer tone. So we found ourselves never switching to a second pickup back in the day, and so we started eliminating them!

I've always loved the resurrection riff. Heavy as hell. Some of favorite riff as to be power trip, salvation, disppearing sun, dead inside, down again.
My favorite is the riff during the solo during Salvation. Such a badass riff

That gain from an old school valve head is dark. We used to use a 5150 and a replica version and the sound was so dirty and filthy that it made me feel sexy in a really unhealthy way.

Rob, Chamaira has often been rightly or wrongly categorised as being numerous metal subgenres, was black metal ever an influence? Is there a hint of black metal in your sound?
Check out our song "Empire"... you'll definitely hear some black metal influence! I know a couple of the Chimaira guys love Dimmu, Emperor, stuff like that.

I remember seeing you guys for the first time in Boise, Idaho when you were still touring Pass out of Existence and I had a copy of the liner notes for This Present Darkness EP and I was asking you guys to sign in, it got over to Matt and he was like, "So I actually wasn't in the band when they made this album" and I was like, "Well you are now" and he gave me a hug and signed it, good dude! Haha
First of all that guitar tone is insane.. second.. I would have never guessed he wrote that riff in pure hatred. It sounds like one of yours.

I know it's not your thing, especially with an already well established sound but I'd personally love to hear you riffing whilst running a boost up front and back all that gain off, you'll retain all that whomp without all the extrenous fizz and saturation from the fiddy. Would be an incredible addition to your already baller playing 💪🏼
God man, Needle makes my head bang with just the guitar, what a powerful riff! In general, Chimaira is one of the very few bands that have these really fantastic, old-school-Hetfield style (for lack of better description) intricate riffs that are simply amazing.

I know I'm late to this but my absolute favorite chimaira song is The Venom Inside. The intro riff is sooo sweet and the groove of the verse just kicks so much ass

When I was 17 the two guitars I wanted most was Matt's Sig viper and the Kelly Hayes Spider EC. Resurrection is a riff that will forever make me start head banging and seeing who else is ready for the pit to go off.

I’ve been modding since the early 80’s, and in my retirement years building as well, so to see A list players like you that actually love modding and maintenance, just gets a whole other level of respect from me.
If you ever get the urge to try it,
As a final step, I tape off the board (if you don’t, it takes forever to clean it off) and use a dremmel with a soft polishing wheel and green compound to do a final polish.
It makes it feel like you’re bending on glass!🤘🏻

oh God i wish i could track down the DVD that had you playing an early iteration of the Resurrection riff on a bus unplugged..... i could swear to God it was an early form of that main riff from Resurrection.
but Matt's #5 Needle was always my favorite on Resurrection. Between that riff and your "Rob's first shred" on The Flame was just tits. mna, just brings back some great memories!
I think the riff you're talking about from that bus scene is the bridge/solo riff in Comatose!
Matt's playing has always reminded me of Chris smith(Integrity, Ringworm, Keelhaul) for some reason probably because he played the same role in ringworm as Chris did but also it's got the groove meets thrash/hardcore style of keelhaul. it's why I loved Chimaria because doing it's own thing but also had a "cleveland" sound.
