    I just shot a show at The Granada a couple weeks ago! I mainly do still photography, but need to get better at shooting video, thank you for uploading this!!

    Thank you for this. I experienced the same audio problem before. When I got it from the sound guy at the venue, it was really flat. Thankfully I also had audio from my Zoom H4N.

    That looks like the original rode videomic pro. What were your settings on both the cam and your videomic pro? DSLR mirrorless cameras can be quite hot, and there’s only three gain settings(-10db pad, 0, and +20db). I still have this mic as well and I’m thinking of using it for backup audio to my GH5. Thanks in advance.

    Great video. I usually use two shotgun mics in stereo on the back main wide camera for backup audio. Like you experienced, the soundboard isn't always reliable. Also, what did you do to keep your cameras from being stolen? Did you have people watching the cameras? Or did you hire other cameramen?

    • @StewartMediaDigital
      @StewartMediaDigital  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In this situation I was able to keep them in the closed off sound booth. But if that wasn’t an option I would hire someone. Having someone else is also helpful for restarting recording on cameras that have the 30 min record limit.

    Any recommendation for a compact point and shoot camera with acceptable lowlight performance and wide zoom range and image stabilizer? Most venues won't let you in with large gears (unless you have permission). I still use my old Sony HX-20V wich does still do an "OK" job for a cam that's more than a decade old. Still most smartphones can easily outperform it in "no need for zoom" conditions. S

    Thanks for this, but can you advise what resolution and frame rate you used for each camera and whether you edited that down to lower Rez?

    Are you using the second base ISO @ 12,800 on the Sony A7SIII for this?

    • @StewartMediaDigital

      I leave it it auto but I shoot in log so I can match colors between the cameras after. It’s important not to over correct for something like a concert. The different color casts add to the atmosphere

    Hey Stewart! Thanks for these great tips! I would like to ask a question: On your master camera, which aperture value you use to get a proper depth of field to get everything in focus? Do you use manuel focus as a set and forget setting, and do you need high iso values in such an environment?

    I shoot a lot of concert videos for friends, but I always struggle with flicker caused by smoke/hazers. so you have experience with that ? Normally I don‘t get flickering when shooting 180° shutter but as soon as the smoke machines turn on I start to get issues with flickering. Any advice ?

    Did you use the wide or linear angle on the GoPro???... I’m not really a fan of the wide angle as it’s too “fish-eye” ish.

    Great tips.
    How did you handle the camera record time limits, which I believe is 30 minute for mirrorless cameras? Drives me crazy when I'm recording concerts. How do you find the GoPro 10 is it better in low light conditions than the previous models. I ditched my GoPro 8 because of all the noise in dark colours and shadows and poor handling of contrast. The internal microphones; however on GoPros I found to be exceptionally good.

    • @StewartMediaDigital
      @StewartMediaDigital  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment! Luckily my A7S III doesn’t have that limit so I used that as my A camera. It was very annoying having to run up and keep the others going while also focusing on close ups though.
      The previous GoPro I had was a 4 and this one is wayyyy better. It’s still only okay. I would love to see a version that can shoot Log or at least a flat profile.

    • @Roisland
      @Roisland 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@StewartMediaDigital it can, GoPro flat profile, not Log and just 8 bit but still..

    Great video and tips. Congrats.
    Do you think a Sony GM 100-400mm at f/5.6 would be usable in a concert like that? I mean, would I have to bump the ISO too much? I also shoot with a Sony a7siii (25fps, 1/50s) and I was wondering if this lens could be used in a A camera for master shot and some close ups as well.

    • @StewartMediaDigital
      @StewartMediaDigital  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yes for sure. That’s a great lens for concerts. I don’t think you would need to push the ISO very much at all, especially on an a7siii

    wasnt you scared of getting overheating with this gear? i'm going to film something really similar with similar gear and i'm sh***ng in my pants. got some overheating in the past. thinking about recording everything in 1080

    • @StewartMediaDigital
      @StewartMediaDigital  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Personally I’ve only had overheating happen outdoors in the sun. But yes I was still nervous. I don’t remember if I mentioned this in the video (cause I made it 2 years ago) but I had an assistant manning the stationary cams.

      I shoot a concert and i tested the camera mic, the A7 mic are garbage, it didnt pick up the bass, the ZVE10 mic sounds better but the best sounds I get is the one from my iPhone 15 Pro, never shoot a musical video using onboard mic on A7, Now I bought the Zoom H6 4 XLR input and the sound is really good.

  • @earlgreybeard
    @earlgreybeard 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    That was really useful. Thanks. I too am looking at a 3-Sony setup, but a bit more on the budget side. So 3 x APS-C cameras with manual focus primes. I have one on a slider, one fixed and am actively manning the FX30. Rather than a GoPro, I have an Insta360 X3 360 degree camera. As I am filming multiple acts, I wanted the flexibility to pick up unexpected movement in the playing area. I think if I went beyond 4 cameras by adding a GoPro, I would start making mistakes. Best to keep it as simple as possible I reckon!

    How do you get permission to video everything and get the audio from the board?
    I'm just stating out. I bought a DJI OM 5. I don't like it. I'm just using a Samsung Galaxy s22 Ultra on a stationary tripod for now or a flexible Mount to put on a railing the venue I go to hasn't complained yet. I do a lot of smaller bands or I can actually take my tripods in and have more freedom to move around I just don't have a lot of equipment yet. I have about 20 concerts on my TH-cam page now that I've shot it's definitely not good work but I'm getting a little bit better at editing

    • @DeadMikeConcertVideos
      @DeadMikeConcertVideos ปีที่แล้ว +1

      this video seems to be geared towards smaller bands and perhaps being hired by a band to shoot video. this provides no useful information concerning taking video at major concerts if you are a fan. you can't walk in with a tripod (considered a weapon), you can't walk in with a digital audio recorder, you cannot EVER plug into the audio soundboard. You are extremely limited, as a fan, about what you are allowed to take into the venue.
      If you are serious about taking video using a top of the line camera that YOU CAN take into venues, then there is only one choice: SONY RX100m7
      Shoots proshot video with a 1inch ccd and takes better audio than any digital recorder I've ever snuck into a venue plus you don't have to work on syncing audio (which can be problematic).
      Great video sharing what he did, but lacks on techniques and challenges actually faced.
      Good luck!

    • @DeadMikeConcertVideos
      @DeadMikeConcertVideos ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, I have two cameras depending upon my seating location. If I can't get close enough seats, then I use a SONY DSC-HX99 which has a better optical zoom but a smaller CCD. The optical zoom ensure crisp zooming as the rx100m7 does not have as good an optical zoom and using digital zoom too much pixelates some. I would NEVER use a gopro. I have 3000+ concert videos and over 250 concert playlists... fyi
