The vocal range on Brad Delp was unbelievable. Boston's debut was among the first 3 records I ever bought in '77 after hearing this song on the radio constantly the first year it came out. Gigantic song and gigantic debut album where every track was basically a single. I grew up with this stuff known as "classic rock" and knew back 45 years ago that these songs would be played and heard 50 years later and beyond. Nothing today even compares..

RIP Brad Delp. He had one of the BEST falsetto voices in rock and roll for sure. The only disappointing thing about this clip is it's an abbreviated version of the studio recording lip-synched to some live footage. It's not the best quality for sound. That entire album is a masterpiece.

He not only had an incredible range, but the smooth, beautiful tone he is able to maintain from chest voice to head voice to falsetto is what has stounded me from the moment I heard him. It's criminal that more people don't mention him in the same breath as Freddy Mercury. Freddy was the better showman, but his pitch was not always so pleasant. From a pure vocal standpoint, I will take Brad's voice every time. He sounds like being taken on a journey to the stars wrapped up in a velvet spaceship.

I think the coolest moment in the song is when he sings the extended "... she slipped awaaay" and you cant tell where his voice ends and the guitar begins. Just a perfect transition.

The BOSTON debut album (released august 26,1976) is one the biggest selling albums in music history. The album was recorded by Tom Scholz in his basement studio. Tom plays all instruments except drums on the album. Brad Delp does ALL vocals. Tom also wrote every song except "let me take you home tonight' written by Brad Delp. Tom also built many effects (the hyperspace pedal, the doubler , power soak and the Rockman amplifier ) to create the legendary Boston guitar sound. The album is a masterpiece from start to finish. It's considered the greatest debut album of all time. I hope you'll give it a listen.

I think it was 1977, I was 13 and ditching school. I had the house to myself and I'd sneak into my sisters room and go thru her record collection. I came across Boston's first album. I was blown away just by the cover and had never heard of them. Side 1, song 1 is More Than A Feeling. It was a gorgeous southern California day, blue sky, etc., I put the album on and couldn't bleev wut I was hearing! Was BLOWN away! Spent the entire morning into afternoon playing this one song. This song can't really be appreciated unless you listen to it from the original studio album. Nice review. You gotta listen to Gonna Hitch A Ride from this same album, side 2.

This band blew up so fast it cost the singer the love of his life. She wanted him around but his contractual obligations kept him on tour. The song THE MAN I WILL NEVER BE is a cry for help from the singer as he was losing the woman he loved due to the sudden unexpected success of the band. Losing her sent him into a deep depression and he killed himself. Money and success is no match for true love.

There is not a “filler” song on their self-titled debut album “Boston” of which this was the first song - this one grabs you and it only gets better as you enjoy the ride! This album, still, ranks as one if the very best albums ever recorded in the genre! It is sooooooo goooooood it’s easy to lose sight that it was a debut. Tom created a guitar sound never before heard and the late, great Brad Delp provided soaring vocal strains that were simply incredible. You can’t go wrong reacting to the rest of this legendary album! 👍🏻

Tom Scholz the lead guitarist, was the producer, writer, sound engineer and inventor for this album. He also played all the instruments for the original recordings. Later a drummer was brought in. But the album was pretty much finished when it was brought to the music industry. Tom invented the rock pedal guitar system that is pretty much used now by all modern guitarists. On the Hitch a Ride song from this album during a guitar solo he switches timbre continuously showing off the new guitar pedal. This is also why you never heard garage bands and cover bands doing Boston songs. They could never make the guitars sound right since Tom invented the pedals and did not release the computer codes for the sounds he used for his own songs. So nobody could copy Boston songs, they never sounded right. Brad Delp is an amazing singer and Boston is not the same without him. RIP. Thanks for sharing and great reaction. You should check out every song on the album, literally go down the play list one after another and you will step back in time and hear the album like most of us did the very first time. Chris

Brad Delp lived just a couple of miles down the road from us in Atkinson, NH. My son just happened to work at the nearby Home Depot and got to speak to him shortly before he committed suicide. As others have noted, you really don't want to listen to "live" Boston recordings. The genius of Boston happened in Tom Scholz's basement as he played all of the instruments except drums, invented the electronics for the guitar effects, and arranged a perfect debut album that still blows new audiences away nearly 50 years later. Brad Delp's amazing vocals (layered in by Scholz) complete the package. Listen to the whole album -- the sound is consistent, but every song is distinct, and they're all perfection.

Great song by Boston and what great vocal range and electric guitar that is off the deep end. I wish you won't stop the video till the end and then give your reaction to the video.

I was aged 10 when this came out, and remembered it on the radio....thank you Dani for the respect of the song, I loved hearing it again with you, thank you for the memories, my love of classical music came about through listening to guys like Boston, to understand how a D minor key could sound so heart breaking

Hi Dani, your video just popped into my feed and I love seeing younger musicians and music lovers experience the music I grew up with. I have a lot to say on the subject of rock history and singers more specifically but, I love that you got to experience the late, great Brad Delph. He was one of the earliest male rock vocalist's who did to us what he did to you and that is turn our heads.
We had only just begun to hear men sing rock and roll like this and most of us only knew one or two of these early male vocalist's with radical range and power. It makes me smile to think that you and your generation get the same kick we got. To this day, there are still not that many guys who can sing like this.
    All my best to you,
    Peter St. John

This always seemed to be on the car radio on the way home from work, lol.
Contemporary bands at that time the mid 70's were Foghat "Fool for the City",
Led Zeppelin "Nobody's Fault but Mine", Kansas "Dust in the Wind", Jethro Tull "Locomotive Breath".
Last but not least is Deep Purple "Smoke on the Water"..

The Beatles broke up in 1970, and this was released in 1976. I think there's a strong influence between them - you can see if you agree when you start reacting to later Beatles songs :). Another memorable song (or pair of songs) by Boston is "Foreplay/Long Time". Enjoying your reactions! Take care.
