Hi Ashika, I am also moving to Maidenhead with my husband in coming 3-4 months. Need some help in understanding which area will be good for getting a rented house in Maidenhead and how’s the commute to major cities? Avg cost of renting a flat or a villa like yours and places to explore there. 😄

this reminds me so much of the time when my family and I left Bahrain in 1997 and we hired a container to bring stuff home to Bangalore. In retrospect I ask my parents now how much of "Bahrain" stuff do we have now, and it's just the 1 dining table! But to be fair, 1997 India didn't have a lot of good stuff, unlike today.
Sorry your experience was bad though. It's nice to start fresh in a new country with furniture that blends well with the country. To each his own!

Oh I can imagine what your parents went through then but you’re right on things being different now. I would definitely do it differently were I to do it again.

We have few things to ship and I am scratching my head if I should really bring it into the UK (because of shipping costs). It is not really cheap to move things. It costs much more than anyone can imagine.

Hey Ashika, We are moving to the UK next month and though we do have a lot of furniture here at home, we are evaluating if we should get it along or not (Shipment is sponsored by the organization I work for). One thought is to only carry utensils and other essentials only and leave the furniture and other big items. What would you advice?
We also have a toddler and are wondering if there are things we need to be prepared for?

    • @AbsolutelyAshika
      @AbsolutelyAshika  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey there. It depends on how much your organisation is willing to sponsor. DM me on Insta if you’d like to share the value and I can help you understand if it makes sense or not.
Don’t bother bringing over utensils as you’ll need them immediately when you get here. Instead order everything from ikea. It’s not too expensive and you get pretty much everything.
Invest in a good pram for your child as there will be a lot of walking initially. Don’t bother overstocking on diapers, you get everything here. But carry warm clothes for the baby as it’s a little chilly here right now and will be next month too.

Very good and step by step process explained.
You look to be very organised in your steps. However, I have a few queries.
    1. For financial assets like shares, mutual funds, PF, PPF, and property, what things to do?
    2. How does renting Indian house work when you are in the UK?
    3. How/where to get currency exchange for initial expenses till the first salary arrives? How much advance, currency to exchange? In what form, cash/form?
    4. Steps to open a UK bank account, which bank is preferred in the UK?
    5. Which things are not allowed in a handbag or check-in bag?
    6. How to rent a home in the UK while you are in India? Is it advisable?
    7. How to get admission for a child in secondary school? What steps to follow?
    8. Getting admission to a school and renting a home are co-related and is a chicken-egg problem. Without an address, the school do not entertain admission enquiry; however, to get admission to a good school, you need a home. Even if you rent a home, it is not guaranteed to get access in the nearest school, as the admission would be a year-in application. How did you/your friends solve this problem?
