This happened to our family when I was in 4th grade. The cost was almost double the quote. My parents could not afford the new cost. Then the company charged crazy interest for every day they could not pay. Eventually the moving company auctioned off our stuff to pay the bill. We lost everything. All we had left is what we had in the car when we drove across country. Pictures, family momentos, all gone. My parent asked if they could pay a partial amount to reclaim photos and such that were worth nothing at auction but were priceless to us. They refused. This is not just an issue of money. The emotional impact stayed with my siblings and I our whole lives. Our only photos of our parents wedding or our baby pictures are ones that extended family members shared with us. I am 45 and to this day, anything of emotional value travels in my car with me when moving. These companies need to be held accountable for this scam.
Hmmm... Imagine how we feel when we were kidnapped, all our history stolen from Caucasians and European countries y'all's museums, stole our nationality, don't know who our family members are, having to take DNA test to make sure we aren't dating our family. And y'all have yet to give anything back and refuse to try to make it right. We built everything and yet have paychecks... So am I really supposed to have sympathy?!
shywolf4 If you’re ever in this situation again and you can’t afford the new bill try to get information on the auction and have a friend or a family member place a bid on your stuff 99% chance no one else is really bidding on household items so you can get your stuff back Cheaper than the original bill they try to stick you with. I’m sorry to hear about this, as a professional mover it pisses me off.
S C she was provided with money to assist her move by the website to donate but then she was refunded money- she should have paid back the cash. She doesn't have to but why should she make money on this
Is that really your biggest problem? Unbelievable!!! You don't even know if she managed to sue them, got any money back, how much her costs for suing was (lawyer etc). Meanwhile that company chain makes millions of dollars a year on overcharging. Millions, because it's at least 5 companies with many trucks operating all year.
I just have a rule for myself, I never go for the absolutely cheapest offer. There's always something fishy about the company if they can charge so much less then the other companies.
That would've been absolutely hilarious. "Your weight is 6800 lbs." -"...what" "Yep. 2700$ cost." -"I gave you 279 boxes filled with styrofoam packing peanuts" "..." -"Anything to say?" "Is a mistake sometimes! Is error!"
I thought about that too and patted myself on the back for being clever. Then I remembered their moving guys would be lifting those boxes. I still think it would have been funny though.
I watched a TH-camr who also used a Japanese company and holy hell, movers, TAKE NOTE! They even still respect the rule of no shoes indoors, meaning they take the time to remove their shoes every single time they come in, and put them back on when they go out. What they do is pack up everything for you, if it's not already been boxed (which that's fine if it hasn't, just be courteous and pack glassware and fragile knicknacks yourself since those can take time), then put everything by the door, then move it. A few people remain indoors with shoes off, then some are outside with shoes on and they pass the items down an orderly line. Should someone from the outside need to come in, or should they be short-handed, those shoes still are coming off to protect the floor when they enter. Same when they deliver the items. It was fantastic watching them go. But western culture doesn't have that same level of care, because that's exactly it, it's a cultural thing to be that courteous.
When you're just estimating the weight it's really really difficult. I'm not saying this one was okay (cause it was way way off) but it's impossible to estimate completely accurately. If we weigh every item then the move time would be much longer, which would cost much more money. So it's a delicate balance that's a lot more difficult than it sounds.
Gracy Toy Schultz problem here is that some good reviews are sponsored/paid. Some companies will pay you to leave a good review. That actually might be why CBC didn't get replies from those who left good reviews except one. So, you cannot be sure you're avoiding a scam. I would say the same as the first comment, be there at weigh-in.
Your stuff would be vaporized if you did that with no experience on a cross country move. If clients want to pay to have there stuff handled properly its never an issue. However It seems everybody wants to pay the lowest price and then complain when the stuff gets damaged. Not all of them are scammers.
I worked for a "mom and pop" moving company for several years. They had an outstanding reputation that they worked hard to keep. One or the other of them nearly always went to the customer and surveyed the goods to be moved and gave an estimate of the weight. After loading the truck with their goods went to a certified public scale for weighing.
Errors can be to the benefit of the customer if youre working with a honest moving company. For instance if you have a "binding with weight credit" contract with the company, there is the possibility of getting a partial refund if the actual weight ends up being less than what was estimated. This is something you should ask your mover about before signing the contract.
To all the people saying you should drive a truck yourself to move, its not that easy for everybody. I have never driven a truck in my life and wouldnt dare drive one soon. Family and friends aren't always going to be able to help you out. Moving is hard work and is time consuming.
The only time I was involved in a true moving operation was in 1983. My dad had my mom moving stuff so much to the point to where she ended up in the hospital.
Would you rather move your things yourself, hire muscle help if needed, drive it to your destination, hire more offloading muscle help, return the truck, and enjoy being in your new place with ALL your belongings, or risk being ripped off and maybe not being able to ransom your belongings back into your possession?
rob hansen - ok then. How do you propose I handle my overseas move? Pack my stuff, rent a truck, load it up, take it to a weigh station, then to the shipping yard (which only allows shipping companies into the dockyard), rent a partial sea container (from who?), move all my furniture and boxes into a container, drive the ship across the Atlantic Ocean, etc... People hire moving companies for a variety of reasons, often because they cannot do it themselves due to the logistics of necessary steps. This does not make them lazy or snowflakes. And, moving customers should be able to have a fair and honest transaction with the moving service provider plus a means for recourse if the company scams customers.
almost everyone that drives a range rover, bmw, merc or porsche is usually a thief,is very arrogant ,very self centered and thinks the world owes them something...
This is a huge scam in the USA too. The next biggest problem is U-hauls. They get stolen if you leave them unattended for ten minutes. Las Vegas has a HUGE problem with both.
Elena and Murat are still at it, it appears they started up some new companies though. The excel and PDF documents from the following companies all say the authors are from Troy Transportation: Alliance Van Lines, Atlanntis Van Lines, Canadian National Van Lines and Canadas Leading Van Lines. They are using these 4 companies as well as Atlantic Van Lines and Canadian Moving Systems that are referenced in the video. When I got quotes online 5 of these companies submitted bids to me and they were very close. I had no idea they were related at the time.
I feel fortunate that my dad has a big trailer and a pickup truck that he used to help me move when we bought a house last year. we were moving only one town over, and my parents let us store all our things in their garage until moving day. My dad's "price" for all that was that we BBQ him up something tasty before the move, which we did. made a family gathering out of it. it was great.
Unfortunately, I have a bad back. So when it was time for my wife and I to move, we rented a truck, hired people and watched them load it. I drove the truck myself to our new place, hired people and watched them unload it. I know it's a bit controlling, but we don't trust anyone with our personal belongings. My advice to everyone else is to do the same....move it yourself.
thanks market place you guys really saved me form atactic van lines i just got a quote form them and i all most called them too set up the move and they said $1840 form sarnia ontario to fort mcmurray AB but not now i called rawlinson moving and just have to get a quote thanks market place o ya i shard this video on Facebook
JT Edwards See that's why any country needs a crown corporation like CBC because they're funded by the government and thus not answerable to media corporations owned by multinationals. It also keeps other companies in line if CBC Marketplace is banging on their door. Media like this holds companies accountable.

Truly appreciating living in the UK. I'm moving in a couple of weeks, a bloke came round yesterday, looked at what I'm moving, worked out what size van was needed and how many men to move it and worked out a price. You could be charged more if there's a hold up with getting into the new property but you are given an hourly rate for that.
Two guys loaded up mom's piano, etc., then drove so fast we could hardly keep up. They tried to lose us, but mom kept behind them. They finally gave up and took it to the new apt. The piano had a gash.
The exact same thing happened to us back in 2001 when we moved across country for the 1st time. Truck weighed more than expected, had to pay upfront or they would not give back our stuff. Every move since we have rented our own truck and paid local people to load and unload.
I think that's what I'd prefer. Just load it for me and help me unload it. So long as my journey isn't in a hilly area (as it frighteningly was the very first time driving such a truck), I think I can wing it if I go slow.
Good job, keep these investigations coming. As newcomers we were also scammed by one of these companies. They showed up late, took as long as they could to load the truck (even though we had everything ready and outside and helped loading the truck, then they refused to unload unless we paid first and what we were charged was double what we were told. We ended up paying because we were scared and they just dropped everything in the curb and left. They broke some of the furniture in the process and then they staid in the driveway for half an hour . That was quite frightening, we didn't know what they were doing.
The last time I moved 10 years ago , I rented a large cube van with a hydraulic lift on the back for the appliances , tools and furniture etc . I hired 3 buddies for One Day just to carry the stuff out and then in . As I already had things all packed up . I paid them each $100.00 CASH , a wide variety and Plenty of food and COLD bottled water through that Sept. day , and Plenty of booze - when we were all finished . Then I drove them all home as to them drinking . They were paid hundreds of times over the years before this as they were weekly eating and drinking at my shop and in my home before and after that . = I Never want to Feel I Owe Anybody . . . I'll Bet I've Helped 40 people move over the years and Esp. with immediate family - and it was Always For Free . . . Hmmm , now that I'm reminded - Where was My Family that Saturday ???
Mis quotes are a pretty normal thing. But the company should try and deal with it. Not just force it on the customer. My boss would mis quote by 2-3000 lbs but he would always make sure he fixed the problem.

A family friend of ours moved from Vancouver, BC to Sudbury, ON last year and they had the same experience. Our friends were smart enough to bust these guys by actually taking the truck to a wieghing station which was luckily still open. Also, in addition to the overcharging and 2 months late delivery nightmare they actually stole a roomba vac from their belongings!
This is why I moved with a rental car, and with help from my grandpa who has a trailer. It took multiple trips but I got everything moved in two loads.
Thankfully I hold a CDL and I know how to drive big trucks like those and I have no problem moving my own stuff when needed. This is how I avoid this scam.
One time when me and my mom moved (I live in the States), we hired a pretty reputable moving company in our area. First off, the lead guy thought he was God, second they misplaced my deceased father's tools (many were antique and cannot be replaced), and we had lingerie missing, shoes gone and the list goes on. The company were not helpful at all. They said we signed an agreement that states "We will not be held responsible for lost or STOLEN items!" That should've been a big red flag. I asked them if they made it a habit to steal items and that's why they put it in the moving agreement. They couldn't answer me Lesson learned.
I moved from Switzerland to London UK and had an estimate for that in cubic meters. After they packed everything up it was nearly double the size and so was the price, obviously. When I unpacked in the UK I found, that they had individually wrapped pencils, burned-down candles, tea lights and even 8 paper clips. The amount of paper was atrocious! No wonder the volume of the cargo changed that much. And no wonder they couldn’t finish their job in a whole day’s work. They were two guys and I lived in a 1 bedroom flat! 1 bedroom, 1 living room, 1 kitchen, 1 bathroom. I packed the rest over night.
Only furniture and boxes. Your running a scam moving company too. What if the job takes 12 hours. Your telling me you still only charge 350. I don’t think so
When I moved I was about to have people move my stuff for me but my uncle told me just to rent a truck and take it myself because he heard stories of movers overcharging. He also said it would be inexpensive and more trusting than the people who move it.
I love CBC Market Place, Even though I'm NOT in Canada it confirms my suspicions on how things around me are changing and no one notices, Or if they do they seem to take it in stride, Like food containers and portions shrinking and yet you pay the same price you used to for smaller sizes now days. And then there's all the scams and trickery of mechanics, tow truck drivers, tech support, insurance, etc. So again, Thank you CBC Market Place.
Freedom Mobile is owned by Shaw. That's four. And do you realize the cost to start a mobile telecon company? That's a huge amount of infrastructure that would need to be installed.
I am a mover and it makes me sad that stuff like this is happening. I charge usually by the mile and time it take to unload. That way there is no confusion. I input the address of pick up and drop off show it to the customer and charge them based on that and the trailer size I use plus time it takes to load. I 1 bedroom move to Las Vegas I usually do it for 650 to 800 depending on boxes and bed sizes.
Scarlett WhispererASMR There are UHaul companies all throughout America. You just return the truck or trailer to the nearest one. You'll notice the trucks & trailers usually always have out of state tags. Its one whole company. I didn't know how it worked til I moved from TX to WV.

i worked for a moving company for 11 years -- i so totally disagree with this as really what kind of certification does it take to move a couch? --- no 90% of the time its the dispatch that make the rules its mostly not even the foreign guys fault its his workers that are doing that he just runs the company and apparently 5 places at that so these guys are running up to him with questions and hes like wtf ?
People have no idea how much it costs to do a move and the labor. Having some move your stuff is a luxury, not a necessity. Do it yourself if you don’t like the prices. SMH.
My step father was a mover for over forty years. He was always yelling at the guys who went out and under quoted the customers just to get buissness. Its one of the aspects of the job he hated.
Definition of ESTIMATE = roughly calculate or judge the value, number, quantity, or extent of. So yeah it's an estimate...estimates change, thought that was common knowledge. If they want something exact they should have someone come out, examine and take an item list and box count. After doing so they can sign an agreement to move those EXACT items for an EXACT price
Man, even with onsight estimates, customers still manage to add more sometimes. Or add stops to pick up additional items and STILL complain when it goes over the estimate a little.
The problem in the two cases we were shown weren't with estimates going up, it was with a flat out markup in the weight. I agree people should understand that the estimate may be higher or lower depending on specifics (I have had both happen with reputable movers), but claiming something weighed more than it really did *is* a major problem and shouldn't happen.
My sister recently moved Couple days after arrival her husband realized a bunch of his tools were missing He called the moving company..the manager said "oh there wasnt enough room on the first truck we are sending the tools on another truck " Left us all suspecting they were hoping he wouldnt say anything Oh and they broke furniture, dishes, pictures, snapped a brand new headboard These weren't "the cheap guys" either Nightmare move for her too...within a couple weeks they had to evacuate because of forest fires (Their home is ok...so far)
I used to be a mover here in Tennessee this my second video I watched on movers scamming people we never did anything close to this these people are sick
We moved from Winnipeg to Calgary in early 1999. The moving company we hired tried to extort more money at the moment they showed up to move us. Said we had a lot more stuff then they thought we would. They then said the truck was too small to fit everything and needed more money (not sure how paying more money would suddenly make the truck larger). We had less than a one bedroom apartment worth of stuff. It was me my wife and infant daughter. I refused to fall for it and paid NO extra. So guess what ? Our stuff took a week to get to Calgary. A 12 hour trip took 7 days all of a sudden. They said the truck “broke down in Regina”. To this day I still call bullshit on that. I complained and got nowhere of course.
I am currently trying to move from Edmonton to Windsor ON and this is my absolute biggest nightmare. This is what is keeping me from making to move. I dont know what i would do and feel certain it will happen to me
When I moved back from Japan a moving company sent a guy to measure the stuff in our apartment and gave us a ridiculous quote based on their "size" estimation. I went and remeasured every item to be sent home and my measurements were half of their estimate. They had no choice but to cut the price in half.
i worked in Amsterdam where i live as a mover for 5 years. What i saw is the same as here. most of them are not safe with your personal belongins they dont care about your stuff. The price is always higher than expected. Better hire your own truck and do it yourself you will spare alot of money
There are a few reasons to use movers. My best friend was mid chemo and had to move her elderly handicap parents out of their condo. Relator came when they were "done". They left many priceless items behind...didn't clean up...and there were liquor bottles everywhere. Thankfully she was friendly with the realtor and he gave her a heads up. Yes she got her parents stuff and *hell* no she didn't pay full price.
I hired a mover once when I was relocated by my company. The mover quoted $2000. When they moved everything over, the charges became $6000. If it wasn't my company that paid for the entirety of the moving costs, I would have sued the movers.
There are two important terms that moving customers need to know. Broker, and Carrier. A broker is someone who does not perform the move. They merely take your money and then sell the job to an actual moving company that works with the broker's scam. The new company that now owns your job is the carrier, and they will ALWAYS hit you up for more charges because that's how they make their money. The main questions that must be asked over the phone is: " Are you a broker, or are you the actual carrier who will perform the move ? " If they claim they are the carrier who perform the move, the next question is : Okay, is your company logo on the truck that will be coming out ? If they say no, remember their name, tell them no thanks, and call someone else. Even then, you're not 100% safe. I asked a company who told me they were NOT a broker. They sent me a quote to my email. When I read the quote, I checked their disclaimer which is all that fine print at the bottom that very few read, and it stated that they ARE A BROKER. I called the same guy back and he denied telling me he was the actual carrier. I told him he is a liar because I would have never given him my email address if I knew he was a broker. THE BOTTOM LINE IS READ THE COMPANY DISCLAIMER THAT IS SENT WITH THE QUOTE, AND NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH A BROKER. An honest Carrier is a company who will come to your home and look at everything you want to move, and give you a written and binding quote that cannot increase once they deliver your items to the destination. Also, an honest carrier company will always take a credit card, while the others insist on cash, or a postal money order.
I work for a major van line in the US. The MOST important thing when dealing with movers is to get a BINDING estimate! It's best to have the salesperson actually visit you to do the estimate, a virtual estimate would be next best. Ignore anyone who did not actually view your belongings. If an estimated weight is substantially less that the others you need to be careful!
Tandem moving is the worst company. They have no hand trucks, charge you once arrived and it takes them 20 minutes just to open the truck. They give you no reciept and claim everything needs to be packed because of the bed bugs risk even though on the website it says clean blankets. The rudest and slowest movers ever.
I love the videos you guys do! Thank you! Keep up the great work! I am wondering if you know of an American TH-cam Channel doing the same thing you are doing in Canada.
I remember working for a moving company in Arizona, we took a 26 foot truck loaded halfway to Arkansas, they made the customers pay a little over $13,000…it was insane, i quit shortly after
I worked for AMJ Moving briefly in Edmonton. When a guy dropped a computer during a Telus move, he said "That didn't happen". My suggestion is get the movers to hire your kids or nieces and nephews for a day. That way you have your eyes and ears on the jobsite -- your home.
“I’m doing the light stuff” 0:51 😂😂😂 it’s a pun. He’s helping carry the lighter weight items but it’s lamp shades, which are part of your lighting. Lmaoo goteem! Genius
I'm in the U.S. I was getting quotes about hiring movers for an appx 1500 mile move. One company gave a super low quote. At first I was excited, but then I looked into it further and they can increase the price as much as necessary dependent on the weight. Instead I will be packing it myself into a U-Pack because it is measured by the length of the trailer needed, not by the weight. This shows me that I made a good choice and doing it myself will save me hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

I think Japanese moving company will be very welcome here

When you're just estimating the weight it's really really difficult. I'm not saying this one was okay (cause it was way way off) but it's impossible to estimate completely accurately. If we weigh every item then the move time would be much longer, which would cost much more money. So it's a delicate balance that's a lot more difficult than it sounds.

Why isnt the "error" ever beneficial to the customer?
Very well said!!! I totally agree
That is why fragile snowflakes such as yourself get taken advantage of.
@@helenparr6819 I think you misused the term snowflake here... not being able to drive a truck doesn't make you a snowflake...

Holy sh*t - this is the most valuable information to be found in the show or comments. Thank you so very much.
The 255 dislikes are from moving truckers who overcharge customers

“It’s a mistake an error” sure mate it’s an error. Always an error that gets you more money and the customer an empty pocket.
This happened to me too. Quoted $1200, final weight put our price at $3,500. There needs to be accountability for this industry. Good job CBC!
"Don't tell me that I am doing this on purpose"
> How do you *ACCIDENTLY* rip someone off!?
Never use Two Men & A Truck they will rip you off even worse.
And drop & break boxes off the back lift of the truck. I had more damage$ than the price of the move.
No kidding
Thank you for the heads up
So true!! They are the biggest screw job company ever!!
They broke 2 of my family 1k flatscreen Tvs
Two guys loaded up mom's piano, etc., then drove so fast we could hardly keep up. They tried to lose us, but mom kept behind them. They finally gave up and took it to the new apt. The piano had a gash.
The exact same thing happened to us back in 2001 when we moved across country for the 1st time. Truck weighed more than expected, had to pay upfront or they would not give back our stuff. Every move since we have rented our own truck and paid local people to load and unload.

try getting an in home estimate with a written guarantee any reputable moving company will do this. kind of a no brainer.

Glad I moved MYSELF!! Only thing I hired was the moving labor. Drove the truck myself. Save a lot of headaches and money that way!
I think that's what I'd prefer. Just load it for me and help me unload it. So long as my journey isn't in a hilly area (as it frighteningly was the very first time driving such a truck), I think I can wing it if I go slow.
I love these undercover stories!

= I Never want to Feel I Owe Anybody . . .

This is insane. I worked for a moving place for about a year and a half and this isn't hard to avoid if you just look at reviews.
Mis quotes are a pretty normal thing. But the company should try and deal with it. Not just force it on the customer. My boss would mis quote by 2-3000 lbs but he would always make sure he fixed the problem.
I think because they are the cheapest [initially] - people fall for it regardless of the reviews.

A lot of reviews are faked
A family friend of ours moved from Vancouver, BC to Sudbury, ON last year and they had the same experience. Our friends were smart enough to bust these guys by actually taking the truck to a wieghing station which was luckily still open. Also, in addition to the overcharging and 2 months late delivery nightmare they actually stole a roomba vac from their belongings!
This is why I moved with a rental car, and with help from my grandpa who has a trailer. It took multiple trips but I got everything moved in two loads.
CBC marketplace you guys are the best! Please keep up the amazing work!!!
Thankfully I hold a CDL and I know how to drive big trucks like those and I have no problem moving my own stuff when needed. This is how I avoid this scam.

You can only rent a truck if you are older than 25 in Canada plus you have to have a clean driving record then upgrading your license.
They couldn't answer me
Lesson learned.
I own a moving company and we charge a flat rate per truck. ($350) (Local moves only). We only move furniture. And boxes.

I am a mover and it makes me sad that stuff like this is happening. I charge usually by the mile and time it take to unload. That way there is no confusion. I input the address of pick up and drop off show it to the customer and charge them based on that and the trailer size I use plus time it takes to load. I 1 bedroom move to Las Vegas I usually do it for 650 to 800 depending on boxes and bed sizes.

movers should have certificates to move.
i worked for a moving company for 11 years -- i so totally disagree with this as really what kind of certification does it take to move a couch? --- no 90% of the time its the dispatch that make the rules its mostly not even the foreign guys fault its his workers that are doing that he just runs the company and apparently 5 places at that so these guys are running up to him with questions and hes like wtf ?
chozo echo so scams and ripoffs don’t happen to innocent people who just want to move

People have no idea how much it costs to do a move and the labor. Having some move your stuff is a luxury, not a necessity. Do it yourself if you don’t like the prices. SMH.
Put the fraudsters in jail.

No police says you have to look by yourself lr go to consumer court. We dnt know anything about this.
Man, I am addicted to these series, these are some quality works. well done, CBC Marketplace
My sister recently moved
Couple days after arrival her husband realized a bunch of his tools were missing
He called the moving company..the manager said "oh there wasnt enough room on the first truck we are sending the tools on another truck "
Left us all suspecting they were hoping he wouldnt say anything
Oh and they broke furniture, dishes, pictures, snapped a brand new headboard
These weren't "the cheap guys" either

Sometimes you just need to haul your own stuff I saw a uhaul on this. So pretty much trust no one only your self. 😓
Wait is this in Canada and not America

They randomly just added prices.
49x not really. Probally a base minimum charge so sounds about right
It’s was 3400lb not 2000 lb
i worked in Amsterdam where i live as a mover for 5 years.
And then this video gets taken down for 'Copyright claims'

Yes,I agree.
If they claim they are the carrier who perform the move, the next question is : Okay, is your company logo on the truck that will be coming out ?
Fill 99 boxes with whatever waste available and then say it is expensive, they can keep the load!
That way you have your eyes and ears on the jobsite -- your home.

at 18.19 if this guy giving his company s wrong address it is proved he is dishonest . this crook driving range rover by stealing from others.
I've been spending the past nearly two weeks trying to find a reputable provider to no avail. The customer reviews and feedback is horrendous.
